    For Vulcans, pon farr is an unavoidable disturbance, for a human, it can be dangerous. Ancient texts suggest that some Vulcans have been able to survive through intense meditation, but it's risky. Spock is willing to take the risk to spare Kirk, but Kirk refuses to let him go through it alone.
