Strangers {Todoroki x Reader}

Summary:

Prompt: Todoroki, who's lonely and depressed, texts a random number in search of a friend. (Y/N) is the one to receive the message.

{From Tumblr}

Work Text:

Todoroki sighed for what felt like the millionth time in the span of 20 minutes. He had just gotten into an argument with his father, retreating into his room as soon as the chance arose.

A familiar feeling started to bubble within the teen, one that he wished would just go away, never to return. He has friends, yes, and he has other family members that won’t quip at every little action he did, but they were all too familiar. Some knew what was going on in his home life while others still knew nothing. All Todoroki really wants is a friend, one that knows nothing, but also one that he’s able to pour his heart out to, show the sides of him that he keeps hidden. And as much as he doesn’t like the idea, he wants someone that can relate to him, even if it’s only a tiny bit.

Todoroki, he just… feels a little lonely…

Another sigh leaves the half-and-half boy as he turns onto his side, burying his face into one of his soft pillows, drifting off into a mid-evening nap.

~~~~~
Tossing her (f/c) backpack off to the side, (Y/N) plops down onto her desk chair, laying her phone on the wood surface, earbuds in. School was hectic, bullies everywhere and she had failed a quiz. It didn’t help that right when she walked in both of her parents started to chew her out for the failing grade.
Both expect her to be perfect, but she’s… not…
A light groan passes through (Y/N)’s lips, her head falling into the palms of her hands, elbows propping her arms up.
Does anyone else know the feeling of this kind of pressure? The (h/c) haired girl hoped not, but at the same time all she wished for was someone that shared this same burden.
Just so it doesn’t feel so lonely.
~~~~~~~~

Todoroki lay in his bed, scrolling through Google, many links available to tap that are related to what he searched.

‘How to make friends?’

He found it a little ridiculous that he needed to resort to the internet for such a simple thing. Thought at the same time it really wasn’t that cut and dry when it came to making friends. The bi-coloured haired boy, having already tap and read so many articles, started to lose hope. It was just impossible for him to make friends on his own.

That was until an idea within a reading caught his eye.

'Text a random number…’

It was so easy yet even Todoroki didn’t think of it.

Exiting Google, Todoroki made his way to the messaging app, tapping the button to create a new conversation. His slim fingers started to type the area code for Japan, followed by a series of random numbers.

Though when it came to actually writing a text message, his mind went blank. What do you do now? How do you start a conversation with complete stranger? Todoroki sat on his bed for a good 10 minutes, staring down at the flashing line that appeared in the text box, waiting to type the next letter, number or symbol.

Finally, Todoroki decided on something and he began to type.

~~~
(Y/N) lounged comfortably on her chair, papers and a text book splayed out in front of her. She was trying to study but her mind just wouldn’t focus.
“Damn it…” she mumbled, lightly tossing her pencil back onto the desk. Feeling like her session had hit a dead end, (Y/N) started to clean up. That stopped abruptly when the ding of her phone sounded. Setting back down her stuff, her hand reached for her phone.
Unknown
Hello…?
Can you see this?
The (h/c) haired girl stared down at the screen. Who is this? How did they get her number? It didn’t really matter, no one ever texts her, mainly because she doesn’t have any friends, so she’s not about to pass up the chance to talk to someone. And if this stranger asks anything weird, there’s always the block and report button!
(Y/N)
Yeah I can see it
Why?
Unknown
I was wondering if we could talk?
And maybe be friends?
(Y/N)
That’s blunt but alright
Lets just talk first tho
we’ll see about friends later…
~~~

True to what was said, (Y/N) and Todoroki talked for hours into the night, learning new, basic things about each other, though of course they started with the real basics like each others names. The clock was nearing 1 AM and fast, though the conversation was still going strong. It’s a good thing it’s the weekend.

(Y/N)

Hey Todo?

Candy-Cane

Yeah?

(Y/N)

Why did you text me? Or was it random?

Candy-Cane

It was random

And to answer why,

It was because I was lonely and wanted a new friend…

(Y/N)

Same

I’m glad you texted this number

I needed a friend too :)

Candy-Cane

:)

Wait…

Are we friends…?

(Y/N) smiled down at the question. This was the most she’s smiled in a long time. Unbeknownst to her, it was the same for the half-and-half boy. Todoroki sat there, staring at the text conversation, hoping that the person on the other end texts back a 'yes’… or really any other word that means yes…

(Y/N)

Yeah… we’re friends :)

Candy-Cane

Thank you
