Work Text:
The Crusaders made it into their Singapore hotel, discussing how the rooms will be divvied up. The group muttered among themselves, trying to figure out the best arrangement.
“Joseph, would you want to be in the same room as Jotaro, seeing how he’s your grandson?” Avdol asks them. Jotaro grunts.
“Like I’d want to room with the old man.”
Kakyoin raises his hand to get the attention of the group. “If Jotaro prefers, I can room with him. It makes sense, as we’re both high schoolers.” The three adults nod, and Jotaro looks away from the group out the window.
“Then, Avdol and I can share a room as we’re friends, and Polnareff, can you have your own?” Joseph grins at the Frenchman. Polnareff chuckles.
“Like I’d have to worry about an enemy stand, I could handle one on my own.” Joseph crosses his arms in satisfaction.
“Then that settles it. Jojo and Kakyoin, you’re going to be rooming together, I’ll be with Avdol, and Polnareff will be on his own.”
Kakyoin turns the key to the door, and swings it open. The two Japanese students walk into the room, and pause.
“There has to be a mistake,” Kakyoin furrows his brow. Inside the room, there’s a single king sized bed.
“I thought for sure Mr. Joestar had made sure there would be two beds inside the room. Perhaps there was a language barrier?” He asks to no one. Kakyoin walks further into the room and places his luggage onto the bed. He looks up to Jotaro, and frowns slightly.
“Jotaro, if you want, I can sleep on the floor. It’s fine, I truly don’t m-”
“It’s… fine,” Jotaro mutters. He pulls his hat down over his eyes.
Kakyoin blinks.
“I can take the floor.” Jotaro turns his back to Kakyoin, but he can still see the tenseness in Jotaro’s body. Kakyoin parts his lips to protest, but stops himself. He doesn’t even know what he’d say.
“Okay, if that’s what you want.”
The day progresses, and soon the sky turns amber and purple. The two get ready for bed, having not talked much since arriving in the room. Kakyoin gets into bed, and Jotaro lies on the floor. Kakyoin pauses before resting his head down on the pillow.
“Jotaro, the bed is big enough for the two of us. It doesn’t feel right for you to lie on the floor like that.” Jotaro looks up at Kakyoin, and gives him a look one may consider a glare had they not known Jotaro better. From traveling with Jotaro, Kakyoin had learned that he instinctually has a stoic face but his eyes are anything but. At night time, when Jotaro has no hat to cover his eyes with, all his emotions are there.
And oh, what a beautiful, shining ocean lies underneath the stormy surface.
Jotaro looks at Kakyoin for a moment, his eyes sparkling with some form of tension. Apprehension perhaps? He quickly sits up, then looks down.
“You’re fine with that?” He asks solemnly. Kakyoin has to stifle a laugh, which causes Jotaro to suddenly look up, eyes wide.
“No, no, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh at you. It’s just…” Kakyoin sighs as he catches his breath, “you’re always so serious. I don’t mind, really. We’re friends after all,” he smiles.
“Friends, huh…” Jotaro mutters. Kakyoin cocks his head to the side, but Jotaro stands up with a wave of his hand to Kakyoin’s confusion.
He quickly climbs into bed and under the covers, seemingly residing on the edge of the bed. “You know, you don’t have to be so far away from me. I don’t want you falling off the edge of the bed.” Jotaro doesn’t respond, but after a few moments shuffles over towards Kakyoin. The two lie side by side, each staring up at the ceiling.
“I wonder if we’ll get any more nights like this,” Kakyoin mumbles. Jotaro looks over at him. “It’s just that… I’ve really grown to enjoy our time together, even in moments like this, yeah?”
There’s a lull, the only sound coming from the hum of the radiator. Kakyoin smiles and says fondly, “there’s a part of me that wishes I’ll be able to continue to enjoy moments like this forever with you.”
Jotaro glances over at Kakyoin, who sits up. “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t think I said that out loud. I-”
“It’s okay.” Jotaro is suddenly concentrating extremely hard on the ceiling, trying to make out every single divet and change, even in the consuming dark. “...I feel the same way.”
Kakyoin pauses, then slowly lies down next to Jotaro once again.
“I’m so glad I was able to meet one of the best people, even if in the worst circumstances,” Kakyoin smiles. Kakyoin rolls over to look at Jotaro, whose expression is as stoic as ever, but his eyes shine with something Kakyoin had never seen before. Something warm and rejuvenating.
“Me too.”
