Work Text:

Izuku Todoroki was the happiest man on Earth. He had his bakery and a wonderful husband. They were planning on adopting a kid soon, he wasn’t sure how his life could be any better!

His husband was a very successful businessman named Shouto Todoroki.

They were high school sweethearts. Whenever they went to a dance, they were always voted the king and queen of the dance. Izuku always ended up being the queen though, and that kind of frustrated him, but in the end he didn’t mind.

Right now he was preparing gifts for his friend’s wedding.  Kyouka and Denki are so happy together. They’re a perfect match! He smiled and continued to wrap the album he compiled of them during high school. He had three gifts. A stuffed pikachu plushie for Kyouka, a set of rock CDs for Denki, and the album for the both of them.

He smiled at the thought of weddings. He giggled when he remembered how his ended up. There was a food fight and everyone’s fancy outfits were covered with cake. He shook his head and finished wrapping the box the album was in.

He stood up and stretched his hands above his head. Sitting for so long took a toll on him.

He glanced at the clock and frowned. Shouto was supposed to be home an hour ago. He picked up his phone and texted his husband.

You : Hey Sho, you heading home?

After waiting for a few minutes with no response he set his phone down and got to work on dinner. Once he finished he checked his phone and there was still no response.

He sighed and texted his best friend, Ochako Uraraka. She worked with Shouto at their shared company.

You : Hey Ocha, have you heard from Shou? He isn’t responding.

Ochachan : Last I heard he was going out to talk with a client.

Ochachan : Although, he usually refuses to take on clients after hours.

You : Did he say where he was going?

Ochachan : No sorry Zuzu.

Ochachan : but we’ve had this regular lately and Shouto’s taken a liking to him. He says he does tattoo art.

You : What’s his name?

Ochachan : Something like bakukou katsuko

You : Bakugou Katsuki?

Ochachan : YEah!

Ochachan : How you know Zu?

You : He used to bully me in middle school and junior high.

Ochachan : Oh Zuzu, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.

You : No it’s fine. You didn’t know.

Ochachan : Well I have to get going. Me and Tsu are having Miso soup!

You : Have fun with that!

Izuku turned his phone off and sat in silence. Was his husband cheating on him? He shook his head and got up to eat dinner. He’d confront Shouto when he got home.

Izuku finished up and washed the dishes. He sat on the couch and waited, hoping his husband would be home before midnight.

After two hours the door finally opened, it was 1 am. He watched as his usually put together husband tried to fix his tousled hair and smooth out his suit.

He decided to speak up. “Where have you been Shouto?”

He wanted to cry as his husband looked up at him with cold eyes. “Shouldn’t you be asleep.”

“Shouldn’t you have been home four hours ago?” He spat back.

“I texted you I’d be late didn’t I?” Shouto narrowed his eyes, but Izuku stood his ground.

“No. The last text you sent me was ‘I’ll be home by 9. Give or take 30 minutes’. I texted you at 10 and you didn’t respond.” He gave Shouto his own glare and Shouto just huffed.

“What are you accusing me of Izuku?”

“Shouto, you’ve been gone for four hours longer than you should have. I texted Ochako and she said you were with a customer. I know you don’t go to customers after hours. Why the hell do you think I’m curious of where you’ve been?” He stood up and continued his harsh glare at Shouto.

Shouto took his shoes off and slid into his slippers, ignoring Izuku’s question.

“Shouto answer me, where were you?”

“I was busy, so why does it matter?”

“Shouto this is not helping, what were you doing while you were gone?” Izuku felt the angry tears fall down his face but he couldn’t be bothered to wipe them away.

“I doesn’t matter Izuku. So drop it.”

Izuku just stared, how the hell could he say that? He walked passed by Shouto and threw his coat on. He was in the middle of putting on his shoes when Shouto decided to speak up. “Now where are you going Izuku?”

“I’m going to Uraraka’s because apparently you don’t want to be here with me.”

Shouto growled. “I never said that Izuku .”

“Well staying out four hours after you said you’d be home makes me think you don’t want me around.”

“Fine, you want to be like that, don’t come back tonight.”

Izuku huffed and walked outside, bringing his phone out to text Ochako.

You : Hey Ocha, can I come over?

Ochachan : Yeah, did something happen?

You : Yeah

Ochachan : Want to talk bout it?

You : Not on the phone. I’ll tell you when I get there

Ochachan : Okay Izu, see you when you get here.

You : Yeah

Izuku pocketed his phone and ran the rest of the way there.

He explained what happened and the two convinced him to go home in the morning.

He agreed and slept over at the Uraraka household.

He thought about what happened. Was his marriage falling apart? Probably. How did he not notice it? Maybe because the rose coloured glasses were so tinted everything seemed fine. How did it start? He had no clue. When did the marriage start to crumble? Was it when his husband didn’t look at him with the love he used to? Was it when they didn’t sleep together? No. It was when his husband started to look at someone else.

It wasn’t in his control.

He hoped he was wrong and could just talk to Shouto come morning. He fell asleep with tears in his eyes and woke when he couldn’t sleep anymore.

He left the two women a note to thank them for the hospitality and that he’d get them some pastries for their trouble.

He walked home at 5 in the morning, three hours before his husband left for work. He opened the door silently in fear that he’d break the quiet that covered his house.

He took off his shoes and tossed his coat gently onto an armchair.

He walked up to Shouto’s room and opened the door. “Sho. Listen, I’m sorry about last night. I was just worried.” He looked up to meet the gaze of his husband and his childhood bully.

“Oh looky here love, Deku’s back.” Shouto was clearly embarrassed and tried to cover his face.

“Katsuki please leave.”

“Aw c’mon, Deku can’t end our fun, now can he?” Katsuki tilted his head like he knew the answer, but Izuku wasn’t having any of that.

“Leave Bakugou.”

“You don’t get to tell me wh-”

Izuku, no matter how angry never raised his voice, but this was a different type of anger. One that settled into your soul and never left. He was blind with rage as he shouted. “I SAID LEAVE!” Izuku had two steady streams of tears running down his face as he watched Katsuki leave.

“Hun I-”

“How long?” He lowered his head, not wanting to face Shouto.

Shouto stared at him. “Izu-”

“How fucking long have you been unhappy enough with the marriage that you decided to cheat on me?” He looked up at Shouto, rage and sadness clear as day. “Huh? Am I nothing to you? Do I mean nothing to you? Am I, your fucking husband , not enough for you?” He gripped his shirt and stared.

Shouto looked at him and tried to explain. “Izuku, you know I love you, but you don’t ever want to do-”

Izuku cut him off again, sick and tired of his bullshit. “Just tell me how fucking long you’ve been cheating on me so I know just what the fuck to do.”

“...” Shouto looked away, not able to meet Izuku’s eyes. “Nearly a year.”

Izuku stood stock still and went quiet. It was a moment too long when Shouto looked at him. He gripped his wedding ring and dropped it in the trash. Shouto was shocked and looked at Izuku with fearful confusion. “Izu wh-”

“This marriage was apparently useless enough that you decided to push me away and cheat on me for a year, so that ring is the same as this marriage. It’s just trash.” He said it so calmly that Shouto was worried. “You stay here and fuck whoever the hell you want and I’ll leave you the fuck alone.” He turned and didn’t look back as he went to his room. He didn’t look back, not when Shouto called out to him and not when he heard the rustling of clothing being rushed on.

He opened his room’s door and packed a bag. He couldn’t bother Ochako so he’d have to stay at his bakery. When he finished he realized just how stupid he’d been.

They slept separately. They rarely ate dinner together. And they barely talked. He huffed a humourless laugh as he picked the bag up and grabbed his keys. He couldn’t exit his room as Shouto was standing there, tears evident.

“Izuku.”

“It’s Midoriya.” He pushed passed Shouto and got to his car.

Izuku Midoriya didn’t look back.

It hurt too much.
