When a shadow clouded the warmth of the sun in his face, Chuuya opened his eyes and squinted at Dazai looking down at him. Like always, one eye covered with his stupid bandages. “What do you want, stupid mackerel?”, Chuuya asked. The sun behind Dazai reflected beautifully on his hair.
“Hmm~” Dazai hummed and got up again, making the sun blinded Chuuya and making him squeeze his eyes shut. “Chuuya’s blinded by my beauty~!”
Riled up by that, Chuuya jumped up from the ground. Could he read his mind or something? “As if!” He blocked the insult and glared at Dazai. “So what do you want?” Even they knew each other for half a year only, Chuuya knew one thing: Dazai did never anything without a reason.
“It’s my turn to decide on a game,” Dazai explained, “and I have a new one with me.”
Only now Chuuya noticed that Dazai had one hand behind his back all the time and that made him curious. What kind of game did he choose this time? He was never able to guess what kind of game he would bring up. “Which one?”
Instead of an answer, Dazai threw what he was hiding behind his back towards Chuuya and he only barely caught it with his hands, cursing Dazai for it. He looked down onto the small paper box in his hands and read what it was.
Pocky - Blueberry
What kind of game was that? “What is that? I never saw that before.” Chuuya turned the box around and got even more confused about realizing these where sweets with blueberry taste.
“It’s a game about who chickens out first.” Dazai continued his explanation from earlier with a completely neutral facial expression. “So are you in?”
“Yes!” Chuuya agreed on the game without knowing the exact content of it. If it was about not giving up, he would win for sure. There was no situation that ever would lead him to chicken out of it and in the euphory of winning, he missed the devilish glance in Dazai’s eye.
“Okay, then take one of the sticks out, place it in between your lips and-” Chuuya followed his orders already like a loyal dog would do. He was way too much into the competition already. Dazai took the chance. “Remember, whoever backs out first, loses.” And before anyone could say anything, Dazai grabbed the other half of the pocky with his lips and made Chuuya jump back at least three meters and the pocky fell on the floor between them.
“Wah-What do you think you’re doing?”
Dazai shrugged his shoulders. “I just won the game~”
“No, no! You did not win any game! You just- just-!” His face blushed furiously remembering how close Dazai was that moment. A maximum of ten centimeters between them and Chuuya was even able to smell his scent for that brief moment.
“Of course, it’s not my fault you don’t ask for the rules.”
Chuuya squinted his eyes and glared at Dazai. “Which rules?”
“You want revenge? Then I explain them to you,” Dazai said and picked up the pocky package from the ground, took another one out to eat it while he stepped towards Chuuya, the flat heels of his shoes clicking on the ground.
Chuuya nodded. He wouldn’t take a loss like that. “Explain them.”
“We both eat from each side of the pocky and whoever backs out first, loses”
It took Chuuya a little to connect all the gears in his brain to understand what the goal of the game was. However, there was no way he could back out now. He swallowed hard and nodded. “Okay, give me one of those damn pockys then!” Chuuya wrested the package from his hand and pulled another stick out of it to put it between his lips, already tasting the sweet sugar on them.
When Dazai got closer, Chuuya stepped half a step back but then kept the closeness of their faces. He wasn’t able to hold contact with Dazai’s eyes.
The second round of their game felt like it was going on for a long time and the closer Chuuya got towards Dazai’s lips, the more his hands started to sweat and his mouth got dry. His hands clung onto the fabric of his leather jacket and it was a soft touch of their lips only, maybe lasting a second before Dazai pulled back, his back towards Chuuya.
“O-Oi!” Chuuya pointed at Dazai with his index finger, cheeks flaming red, the tip of his ears the same. “I-I definitely won here!”
Dazai didn’t turn around to Chuuya anymore. “No, it’s a tie.”
“Then we go for a third-round!”
