They laid next to each other, backs pressed flat upon the grass, legs tangled up. Despite the cool night breeze, both of them were warm. Whether that was due to the summer air or the blushes spreading across their cheeks, neither of them could say. A soft breeze blew through the park, rustling the grass beneath them and the leaves on the trees around them. Every now and then, the wind would pick up and blow a strand of hair across their respective faces. It was quiet, with the exception of the sound of leaves rustling and crickets chirping somewhere in the distance. The darkness enveloped them, comforting, not threatening.
Mira held a hand up in front of herself, waving it back and forth.
“Look Ao!” She said, voice dripping with awe as she waved her hand harder. “It’s so dark I can’t even see my own hand! Can you see it?”
Mira stuck her hand in front of Ao’s nose. Ao giggled, feeling the air gently brush across her face.
“No, I can’t see it.” Ao whispered. She reached up blindly, fumbling for the hand she knew was only a few centimetres away. Their hands bumped into each other, and Ao grasped Mira’s wrist, pulling her palm down to plant a gentle kiss on it.
“Aw, that was so cute of you Ao!” Mira cried, rolling over to give Ao a hug. It was awkward, considering they were lying on the ground and all. Mira giggle as she wrapped her arms around Ao and pulled her closer. The two sighed in contentment.
“It’s going to start soon.” Ao noted, clutching Mira’s hand. Mira squeezed it in return.
“Yeah! Any second now!” Agreed Mira. As soon as the words left her mouth, a sparkle streaked out above them.
“There it is!” Mira exclaimed. “It’s starting!”
One by one, tiny lights flashed across the clear dark sky, lighting it up in a blur of soft white light.
The sky was alight, casting a gentle glow on the girls. Ao stared in awe at the light show above her.
“I love it.” She breathed. “It’s beautiful.”
Mira nodded in agreement.
“It’s breathtaking.”
The two sat in comfortable silence, basking in the beauty of the sky.
Time passed, but neither of them cared or noticed. They were breathing in the magic of the moment, and nothing mattered but them and the twinkling lights shining around them. Once the meteors had slowed slightly, Mira turned to face Ao again. This time, the pale light illuminated her face, letting Mira see just how pretty Ao was when she smiled. Her face was relaxed, cyan eyes widened as they tried to take in everything they saw. Her mouth was slightly ajar, and strands of her hair would blow around her face.
Mira thought she had never looked more beautiful.
She leaned over, tracing her fingers gently over Ao’s face and brushing the stray hairs away. Ao hummed and look over towards Mira.
“Hmm?”
Mira leaned down, giving Ao a soft kiss on the forehead.
Ao blushed heavily, difficult to see in the dark, but Mira recognized it almost immediately.
“W-what was that for?” Ao stuttered, still flustered.
Mira giggled.
“I just thought you looked really cute right then, and I wanted to kiss you!”
Ao leaned over to kiss Mira in return, leaving a tiny peck on her right cheek.
“Well now we’re even.” Ao said, still unable to hide the ever growing blush on her cheek.
Mira’s giggle grew into a laugh.
“Aww! I love you, Ao.”
Under the light of the stars, clutching the hand of the girl she loved once more, Ao couldn’t have been happier.
“I love you too, Mira.”
