We're Lost In A Dream Now

Summary:

Lan Zhan and Wei Yings first Valentines Day.

Notes:

Yeah....i just had a mighty need for some wangxian Vday shenanigans. That and I was inspired by a shirt I saw at wal-mart...oh and this is totally not edited or betad because its a lot longer than what I originally planed..

Work Text:

Lan Wangji sometimes hated how his body would automatically wake up at 5 am. Years and years of waking up early had completely destroyed the need of having an alarm. He only had a clock in his room to tell time. Nothing more. Some would say he had it easy or they would say he was lucky. And most of the time he would agree. But not today. Today he wanted just five more minutes. Five more minutes to remain with his eyes closed. Five more minutes in his comfy bed and warm sheets. Just five more minutes to enjoy the sweetest dreams.

But he knew better. He knew five more minutes would mean he’d be running five minutes late to all of his regular routines. No matter how sweet his dreams may have been he knew the real thing was so much sweeter. With a resigned sigh Lan Wangji got out of his bed and stretched. He went about his morning routine with anticipation swirling in his stomach at the thought of potentially making his dreams a reality.

Sadly, Lan Wangji would have to wait to make those dreams come true. It appeared that the star of all his dreams, the object of all his thoughts, the keeper of his heart...was running late. Again. Not that he is all that surprised. His boyfriend may have hung up at 9 pm to let him sleep but, knowing the other as well as he does, that did not mean the other would be going to bed at that time. No, not his boyfriend. His boyfriend for some ridiculous reason loved to go to bed late and wake up late. It was something that used to annoy him but now it was just another thing he loved about him.

Walking towards his locker he silently contemplated how hopelessly in love he really was. As he was getting the right books out of his locker for his morning classes he heard his name being called out before feeling a familiar presence next to him.

He didn’t even have to look over to know who it was. But he did because he was not going to be rude to his friend.

“Good morning Wangji” Song Lan greets just as Wangji closes his locker

“Morning.”

There’s an amused smile playing on his friends lips and Wangji know hes about to be teased. “So your other half decided to sleep in today did he?”

Wangji sighs tiredly. Ever since he started dating Wei Wuxian it appeared that the whole student body made it their business. Including his one and only friend. Though to be fair his friend was just teasing. The rest of the students at his school just wanted gossip. God if he had to hear another rumor about them breaking up he was gonna transfer schools. He swears it. ‘

“Mn.”

Song Lan chuckles “ Classic Wuxian but in a way it's a good thing he’s not here”
At that Wangji raises a brow in question

Song Lan rolls his eyes at him “Don’t get all offended on me now, it's just I wanted to ask you what you had planned for Valentines day. Knowing you it’ll probably be some big surprise.”

Wangji stares blankly at his friend. He honestly hadn’t thought much of the overly commercialized holiday.

“Don’t tell me you forgot?” Song Lan exclaims

Wangji shrugs “Didn’t give it much thought.”

“Are you serious? Wangji you who have composed a song for your boyfriend, you who has shown up in full school regalia just to support said boyfriend at his games, you who buys flowers for that same boyfriend just because, have no plans for Valentines day?”

Wangji simply nods and his friend groans in frustration “Dude you’re probably one of the most romantic guys I know! How come you’re skipping out on the one day you can be extra?”

“I don't need one day to show Wei Ying how much I care about him.” Wangji replies deadpan and then adds “Why are you making such a big deal about this?”

“Because I was hoping to get an idea of what to do for Xingchen!” Song Lan whines

Now it's Wangji turn to roll his eyes “I’m sure he’ll enjoy anything you come up with.”

“Easy for you to say. You always manage to woo Wuxian so easily. I know Xingchen appreciates all the things I’ve done for him but I wanted to do something extra special. Especially since this is our first Valentine's day together”

“I see…” Wangji says realizing at that moment that this would also be his and Wei Yings first Valentines day as a couple. He wonders briefly if maybe he should do something. What if Wei Ying expects it? He knows his boyfriend enough to know that they could simply spend time at his house with some snacks and Wei Ying would be happy but maybe…

“Lan Zhan!” an oh so familiar voice calls out immediately drawing him out of his thoughts.

Next to him Song Lan sighs “I’ll see you at lunch,” he says before taking his leave. Wangji nods and then he’s being engulfed in his boyfriend's arms.

“Lan Zhan! I am so sorry I woke up late! But look I made it just in time for us to walk to class together” Wei Ying exclaims breathless but smiling widely immediately making Wangji weak in the knees.
“Mn. Should get going before we’re late” Wangji says but makes no move to actually leave and instead hugs Wei Ying closer.

“Oh Lan Zhan but we can’t leave just yet…” Wei Ying says looking up at him innocently.

“We’ll be late.” Lan Zhan says knowing the meaning behind Wei Yings words. He knows exactly why they can’t head to class yet. Knows because it's their own little routine. Knows because he doesn’t plan on heading to class without doing their ritual. He just likes to tease Wei Ying whenever the opportunity presents itself.

“But Lan Zhan…” Wei Ying whines frustrated that his boyfriend is obviously being a tease. “You haven’t given me my good morning kiss.”

No sooner were those words spoken when Wei Ying felt soft lips on his own. He closed his eyes and sighed in content eagerly returning the kiss. Nothing could compare to the way that Wangji kissed him. Nothing.

They seperate quickly mindful they still have classes to attend and knowing they can share more kisses later if they both hurry to class now. Each of them wear smiles on their lips (one more subtle than the others) as they head to their first class for the day hand in hand. It was a good thing they shared their first class together. Both of them were able to take their seats just as the bell for class to start rang.

The couple share most of their classes together. Mostly because they take all the same accelerated courses and one of them may or may not be good at persuading their counselor to let him be in classes with his significant other. But they do have to separate for their elective courses and lunch (a deal had to be made with the counselors).

So it is no surprise when Wei Ying sighs audibly as he takes his seat at the lunch table full of the people he eats lunch with everyday.

“Stop being so dramatic” he hears his brother snap at him. Next to his brother Nie Huisang holds back a giggle while Xiao Xingchen focuses on the meal in front of him not wanting to get involved in the siblings constant war.

Wei Ying sticks his tongue out at him in retaliation.

“Are you guys ever nice to each other?” Wen Ning asks looking between the two brothers.

Who of course say, “No.” at the exact same time making the rest of the table occupants roll their eyes in exasperation.

“You guys need family therapy or something” Xingchen mumbles

“For your information...we go every Wednesday and Friday” We Ying replies casually as he starts pulling out his lunch from his backpack.

“Yeah it’s nice” Jiang Cheng says around a mouthful of rice.

The table erupts in laughter at the two brothers shenanigans. When the laughter dies down it's Nie Huisang that starts up a new conversation.

“So you guys have any plans for Valentines day?”

Jiang Cheng scoffs “Besides coming to school to be reminded of how very single I am...no”

“You know that wouldn’t be a problem if you just asked Xichen out” Huisang says loving the blush that dusts Jiang Chengs cheeks.

“Shut it”

“He’s not wrong” Wei Ying adds before taking a bite of his food.

“Do you guys have a death wish?”

“Now now boys relax. So Huisang do you have plans?” Xingchen says hoping to calm the seething Jiang Cheng.

“I do actually! I’m going to bake cookies at Mo Xanyus place” he replies excitedly.

“Wait you guys are dating?” Wen Ning asks

“Bro get with the program they started dating two weeks ago remember” Wei Ying says not looking up from his food

“What about you Wei Ying?” Huisang asks and Wei Ying just shrugs.

“Don’t know.”

The whole table freezes. At the sudden stillness Wei Ying looks up at his friends. He blinks at all their shocked expressions. “What?”

It's Jiang Cheng who gets over his shock “Are you serious?”

“What?” Wei Ying asks not understanding why it's such a big deal. It's just Valentines day.

“Wei Ying...you...you don’t have plans for Valentines day?” Wen Ning asks

“No…”

“But you and Wangji are always so...gross together how do you not have plans?” Jiang Cheng asks.

“Isn’t this your first Valentine's day with him to?” Xingchen asks.

“Yeah but...we don’t need to celebrate Valentines day. I doubt Lan Zhan cares. It's so overhyped and I think I know my boyfriend enough to know he's not into it.”

“Really? But you guys are always so over the top. Why not do something the one day it's actually expected” Huisang asks

Wei Ying laughs at his concerned friends faces “You guys are being ridiculous. Lan Zhan and I practically celebrate Valentines day everyday. We don't have to do anything special.”

“Well that could be true but...you don’t think he’ll surprise you?” Huisang asks

And that actually makes Wei Ying think. What if Lan Zhan did have something planned? His boyfriend loved spoiling him...and he really wouldn’t put it past Lan Zhan to do something. Especially if he thought it would make Wei Ying happy. Fuck...Lan Zhan always managed to make him feel so incredibly special and it wasn’t fair! Lan Zhan deserved to be just as spoiled as he was. And this really would be their first Valentines day together. Maybe they should do something…

“I...hadn’t really thought about it…” Wei Ying said scratching his head.

“My bet is he's going to so you have two days to figure something out” Huisang said smirking at him.

“Valentine's day is in two days?!” Wei Ying exclaimed, making all his friends groan. Their poor idiot was definitely doomed.

For the rest of the day both boys mulled over their plans for Valentines day. They really didn't have much time to come up with anything grand. The restaurants were probably all fully booked and cooking for each other was out of the question. Wei Ying was a disaster in the kitchen and Lan Wangji was no better. What they both agreed upon (unknowingly) was that it all had to be a surprise.
When they met up outside of the school both boys decided not to mention anything about the upcoming holiday. Instead they acted as they usually did. Wei Ying talking a mile a minute as Lan Zhan held his hand and silently listened, commenting whenever it was appropriate.

“Lan Zhan I think we should do our biology homework first. I totally spaced out while Mr. Woo was lecturing today.”

“Okay.”

“Ooh and if we finish early we can watch a movie!”

“Mn.”

“I’m kinda in the mood for a comedy. What do you think Lan Zhan”

“Whatever Wei Ying wants”

“Lan Zhan!! You can’t just say stuff like that. Plus if you keep spoiling me like this I’m gonna become a brat.”

“My brat” Lan Zhan replied giving Wei Ying a peck on the cheek and thoroughly enjoying the blush that appeared on his boyfriends face.

“Lan Zhan!!” Wei Ying whined but then stopped them in the middle of the sidewalk to give him a kiss full on the lips.

Both smiled at each other content. Each of them feeling so very lucky to have the other in their life. How could they not celebrate Valentine's day?

Lan Wangji sat at the dinner table pensive. He had exactly a day and a half to come up with something special for his Wei Ying. Something cute maybe? He could buy him some flowers? Or maybe he could take him to the movies? Was that too predictable?

“Penny for your thoughts?” he hears his brother say and Lan Wangji lifts his gaze to meet similar gold eyes staring back at him.

Lan Wangji sighs “It's nothing.”

“Really...you’ve been sitting here for a while now.” Xichen says smiling warmly at his younger brother.

Lan Wangji contemplates telling his brother. If he can’t provide ideas he at least can talk about his own ideas..

“Valentines day” he says and his brothers eyes shine with amusement.

“Ahh so you will be partaking in the holiday.”

“Mn”

“Let me guess you want to surprise Wuxian?”

“Mn”

“Well what have you come up with so far?”

Needing no more prompting Lan Wangji delves into all his ideas. He tells his brother of the movies, the flowers, of maybe buying chocolates, or making Wei Ying a card. Something personal and from the heart. His brother listens to all of it ever patiently. Let's Wangji vent all his worries and his frustration with the holiday being so close.

Once it seems like Wangji is done Xichen smiles at his brother and says something so perfect all of his worries melt away. His brother really is the best.

It's the night before Valentine's day and Wei Ying is in full panic mode. He hadn’t had enough time to go to the store the night before because his stupid coach had them running drills late into the night. He was lucky enough to be able to finish some of his school work before going off to bed. He hadn’t even had a chance to call his boyfriend. All he could do was text him.

Wei Ying manages to borrow his sister's car after school and rushes to the local store hoping with all his heart that there is still something he can purchase. There is...but it's not exactly spectacular. He sighs as he walks to the check out arm full of chocolates and a stuffed bunny when from the corner of his eye he spots something.

It's tacky. Definitely corny. And not something anyone in their right mind would buy but he’s a desperate man and part of him knows his Lan Zhan will find the ridiculous thing hilarious. The last thing he has to do is write his boyfriend a love letter. A task he leaves for after their nightly phone call. With his music playing low in the background and the light of the moon and the light from the lamp on his desk Wei Ying writes. He writes and writes until his hand cramps. The letter is two pages long and it contains the cringiest word vomit imaginable. Even he’s a little nauseated by it's contents, but it's done. Maybe it's not the Valentines gift he imagined but it will have to do.

The big day finally arrives and both of them wake up feeling giddy. It's silly really. Because they both had been so against the whole holiday neither of them had put much thought into it. And now both of them were up early getting ready to surprise their significant other. Maybe that’s what really made them giddy. The anticipation of seeing the others reaction to their surprise. Or it could be the fact that it was their first time celebrating. Or maybe the holiday had a weird way of making couples in love just a little more mushy and corny? It may well be a combination of all these things.

In the end it didn’t matter. What mattered was that they were too excited to surprise the other.

Wei Ying skipped all the way to school holding the bunny plushie he planned on shoving into his boyfriend's locker. Lan Zhan made his way to school calmly unaware his boyfriend had been up at the same time as he had been. He walked with leisure imagining Wei Yings reaction to his surprise. Would Wei Ying blush? Would he playfully smack him? Would he cry?

To each of the boys' surprise they crashed into each other right at the entrance of the school distracted by their thoughts.

Both of them were quick to apologize but then froze when they noticed just who they had bumped into.

“Wei Ying?”

“Lan Zhan?”

“What are you doing here?” they both exclaim.

“I…” they both say at the same time and then burst out laughing. The situation is just too ridiculous and hilarious.

“Lan Zhan were trying to surprise me?” Wei Ying asks as his laughter dies down.

“Mn.”

“Awww my sweet sweet Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying says before launching himself into his boyfriend arms (bunny plushie squished between them).

“Wei Ying is up early” Lan Zhan states kissing Wei Yings head as he holds him closer.

“Well...I wanted to surprise you” Wei Ying mumbles into his boyfriends chest.

“I’m surprised” Lan Zhan says teasingly and Wei Ying smiles brightly at the other. Lan Zhan stares into his boyfriends eyes and leans down to kiss the other properly on the lips. Wei Ying melts in his arms. Time seems to stop at that moment. Each of them happy in their sweet embrace. Fully and totally in love.

When they do separate Wei Ying remembers the bunny he had intended to put in Lan Zhans locker.

“Here Lan Zhan for you” he says presenting a black bunny with a red ribbon around one of his ears. Lan Zhan takes the bunny and hugs it close.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t think thats all I got you! He’s just so you don’t feel lonely throughout the day” He explains and Lan Zhan nods content.

“I have something for you to” Lan Zhan says already pulling his backpack off.

Wei Ying watches his boyfriend curiously and sees a heart shaped red box. “Oooh Lan Zhan you got me chocolates!”

“Mn.” is Lan Zhans reply as Wei Ying takes the box and starts to open it. “I made them”

Wei Ying looks up at his boyfriend surprised. “You made this for me?”

“Mn”

“You really are the best boyfriend ever Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying says before hugging his boyfriend close.

They make their way into the school figuring they might as well take advantage of the fact they were both here so early. Well Wei Ying was early and Lan Zhan planned on taking full advantage of that fact. They walk each other to their lockers and find a nice cozy spot in the library to hold each other close. If Wei Ying ends up in Lan Zhans lap well there isn't anyone around just yet. And if Lan Zhan steals kisses every now and then who could blame him. It's Valentines day after all.

The day goes on in a breeze. Wei Ying is in his french class counting down the hours for when he will be able to be with his Lan Zhan again when the sound of the PA system goes off. Everyone in the class looks up expecting their principals voice but instead there is a soft melody. A melody so familiar it makes Wei Ying gasp. It couldn’t be. Lan Zhan would never!!!
Oh but he knows this melody. He knows it like he knows his name is Wei Wuxian. The song being played is none other than the song Lan Zhan composed for him.
And then his boyfriend, his beautiful Lan Zhan, walks into the room with a dozen red roses. The room explodes in “awws”. Everyone agreeing that they would kill for someone to do something so romantic for them.
“Happy Valentines day Wei Ying” Lan Zhan says coming right up to Wei Yings desk. Wei Ying is speechless. He stares up at his boyfriend and pinches himself because this must be a dream. It hurts and he realizes no this isnt a dream and cant help the tears that spring into his eyes. He loves his boyfriend soo much.

“Lan Zhan” he whines and feels the tell tell signs of a blush on his face.

He’s only allowed a hug before the teacher breaks them up.

Lan Zhan leaves the classroom with a satisfied smile on his lips.Wei Ying on the other hand has to sit through a class of people asking him questions and cooing at the blush that wont go away.

At the end of the day Lan Zhan waits for Wei Ying at the school entrance as he usually does. Hes a little early since his class was let out early on the count that everybody was too distracted to actually pay attention. He looks around the crowded halls until he spots his boyfriend. His boyfriend who appears angry?

Lan Zhan studies the way his boyfriend practically stomps over to him. Had he embarrassed him too much?

“Lan Zhan” Wei Ying says still holding the flowers from earlier.

“Wei Ying”

“I hate you” Wei Ying says before pulling his boyfriend down to his height to kiss him feverishly. Lan Zhan responds easily. Kissing Wei Ying with just as much passion.

Neither of them hear the whistles and whoops from their classmates. Neither of them really care.

They only separate because their lungs beg them to do so.

Wei Ying looks up into his boyfriends dazed. “Lan Zhan...how am I supposed to give you my presents now.”

Lan Zhan blinks at him confused.

“After that whole display my present seems...lacking” Wei Ying sighs and Lan Zhan can’t help but bring his boyfriend in for a hug.

“I will love it anyway.”

“You’re just saying that.”

“No. If you are giving it to me then it is a priceless treasure.”

Wei Ying pulls back to look at his boyfriend “Let's go. I can’t have the whole school knowing how cheesy you really are.”

Lan Zhan cracks a smile at that and takes a hold of Wei Yings hand. The walk to Lan Zhans house is silent but not uncomfortable. Unexpected but welcomed. Both of them just basking in being together.

Once they reach his house and get settled Wei Ying runs over to his backpack and yells for Lan Zhan to close his eyes. He does as he’s told and waits patiently.

His boyfriend returns quickly and tells him to put his hands out. Again he obeys and feels as Wei Ying places what seems to be a wrapped box on his hands.

“Okay you can open them!” Wei Ying says

Lan Zhan does as he’s told and is surprised to see the colorful wrapping in his hands. He looks over at Wei Ying who is watching him expectantly.

“Go on open it” he says and Lan Zhan does just that.

He takes his time unwrapping the gift, not wanting to ruin the wrapping paper (hoping to save it).

His eyes widen when he sees light purple fabric. He unfolds it to realize it's a shirt. A very long shirt meant for sleeping. There are white bunnys on the shirt and it makes him smile.

He looks over at Wei Ying who has been quiet throughout the whole process.

“You hate it” he says heartbroken

Lan Zhan is quick to say no “I love it. Just as much as I love some bunny”

Wei Yings eyes widen before he laughs joyfully. He knew Lan Zhan would appreciate the pun on the shirt “Some bunny loves me”. It was terribly corny but sweet all the same.

“Im glad you like it” Wei Ying says as Lan Zhan pulls him closer.

“I love it”

The rest of the evening is spent in Lan Zhans room. They pop popcorn drink cola and put on a crappy romantic comedy. They laugh at the couples poor attempts to stay away from each other and joke about how they are much more romantic than the on screen couple (Wei Ying jokes, Lan Zhan simply holds his boyfriend close and presses kisses to his face)

When it's time for Wei Ying to leave he gives Lan Zhan his final gift. A letter.

“Is this a love letter?” Lan Zhan asks

“Yes. You may read it as soon as I leave and you are to never mention this letter to me or to anyone...ever” Wei Ying says sternly before giving his boyfriend a quick kiss.

“Never.” Lan Zhan says honestly before pulling Wei Ying in for another kiss.

“Good.” Wei Ying replies smiling sweetly.

“Happy Valentines day Lan Zhan”

“Happy Valentines day Wei Ying.”

They kiss one last time and then Lan Zhan watches his boyfriend go.

Alone in his room he reads the letter and blushes furiously. He really is a lucky guy. He texts Wei Ying a quick thank you and promptly hides the letter away.

They each sleep that night peacefully. Both of them were satisfied with their first Valentines day. Both of them feeling like they might have taken the holiday for granted.
