Chapter Text
It was a Friday, and the last bell had rung for the week. Genya made his way over to his locker, surprised to see a nervous looking Tanjiro waiting for him. Genya had never seen the usually bubbly boy looking so anxious, and it filled him with worry. He frowned as he approached.
“Hey, Tanjiro, what’s wrong?”
“Nothings wrong!” He stammered immediately, having trouble meeting Genya's eyes. He took a deep breath, seeming to have inhaled a cloud of confidence with it. “Genya! I think you're very cool, and really handsome! Will you go out with me?” He nearly shouted out with diligence.
Genya's face went tomato red, not expecting this sudden question, and so loudly in the hallway filled with his classmates. He froze in his emotional panic, only breaking out of it when Tanjiro's face started to fall in his slow reaction time. “Yeah! I- yes I'll go out! Uhhhhh what did you have in mind?”
Tanjiro beamed at him. “Great! Tomorrow, I'll pick you up at your house, I have a picnic planned already, how does 1 sound for lunch?”
“Sounds good! I'll see you then.” Genya replied, able to externally calm down despite his gay heart’s thumping.
That’s how they ended up here, sitting on a picnic blanket in the park overlooking a pond. Watching the ducks go by, and chatting about anything their hearts desired. Tanjiro had gone all out for this, packing sandwiches he made, extra water, and some pastries from his family's shop. It made Genya feel appreciated in a way that he hadn't felt before, and it was nice.
“You know,” Genya started, “You caught me by surprise yesterday. I was worried something was wrong at first. And I didn’t get a chance to say it back.”
Tanjiro looked up at the much larger boy next to him, his eyes filled to the brim with innocence and admiration. “Say what back?”
Genya smiled at him, finding one of Tanjiro's hands in his own, interlocking their fingers. “I've thought you were handsome too, for a long time now. You're funny, you're charming, and stubborn as fuck, I still can't believe you managed to get me here when I was scared of getting to know you at the start of the year.”
Tanjiro grinned, “When I set my sights on someone, no one is safe from my friendship powers. And I especially wanted to get to know you, because I always wanted to me more than friends.” Way too honest. He brought Genya's hand up, still held softly in his own on, and kissed it gently, delighting as the more intimidating boy turned into a flustered mess.
And they sat together like that for a while, enjoying the warmth between. Hands interlocked, only letting go to pack up their picnic, and returning to each other as the boys walked home.
