Work Text:
Dating is hard.
Now imagine dating someone while training to be a hero at the same time. It made everything a lot more difficult.
It didn’t stop Shoto and Izuku from trying though.
It was just a few weeks after the Sports Festival, and a little ways past their fight against the Hero Killer, when Shoto finally worked up the courage to ask Izuku to be his boyfriend.
Of course, with the profession they were both trying to go into, dating was almost impossible, and most certainly dangerous.
So they decided to keep it a secret, for the time being.
At first it was easy, keeping away from each other in class, only talking when necessary to not draw any attention to themselves.
But as their relationship progressed, it became increasingly harder to keep a distance from one another.
”Shoto, w-we shouldn’t—“ Izuku keens, pawing at Shoto’s chest lightly.
They had snuck away to the bathrooms for some much needed .... quality time. It’s been too long since Izuku’s let Shoto touch him like this.
”I’ll b-be quick.” He sighs shakily, leaving open mouthed kisses up and down his boyfriends tanned, unblemished neck.
”A-Ahh! Someone’ll walk i-in!” Izuku moans softly, but holds on tighter to Shoto’s shoulders.
And just as Shoto’s about to sink his teeth into one of Izuku’s collarbone, someone does walk in.
They both panic, and Izuku knocks Shoto backwards haphazardly jumping onto the toilet seat, shooting Shoto a knowing glare. He rolls his eyes petulantly, wishing bad things for whoever interrupted their impromptu make out session.
“Yo, anyone in here?” Kaminari’s voice rings, and Shoto runs a hand over his face. Great.
”Uh, yeah.” Shoto calls back, and Izuku slaps a hand over his mouth to hide his laughter. Shoto shakes his head at him fondly.
”Oh, hey, Todoroki! Glad you said something, because you should probably get out of here while you still can. I have a feeling what’s about to come out of me won’t be human.” And this time Shoto has to slap a hand over his mouth, curling his lips over his teeth to keep obnoxious laughter from spilling out of his mouth.
The two are struggling to keep in their snorts, encouraging each other to stay quiet by putting up their fingers to their lips while silently laughing, faces turning red at straining themselves.
Once they’re sure Kaminari is ... doing his business, Shoto urges Izuku to get on his back so that their friend wouldn’t see two pairs of feet instead of just one, and just as their about to leave, the electricity wielder speaks up again.
”Later, Todo!” And this time Shoto can’t help but let out a little wheeze, Izuku following quietly into his ear.
They’d have to get better at sneaking around.
“Sho we need to study, focus.” Izuku whines, pushing away Shoto’s wandering hands from his waist.
”We both know we don’t need to study, you’re just being extra.” Shoto pouts, resting his forehead on the back of his boyfriends shoulder.
”’Extra’? Who taught you that?” Izuku giggles, eyes still trained on the textbooks sprawled out in front of him.
Shoto pouts, nuzzling his nose further into the crook of Izuku’s neck. ”Ashido.”
”Of course she did.”
When his boyfriend still doesn’t turn around, Shoto begins peppering kisses up and down his neck, occasionally nipping at the sensitive spot underneath Izuku’s ear, knowing it drove him crazy.
”Sh-Shoto, I know what you’re doing a-and it’s not gonna work,” Izuku yips, his pencil slipping out of his hand when Shoto’s mouth starts working on the lobe of his ear.
”Sh-Shoto!” He yelps, shouldering him away, and briskly moving so that Shoto couldn’t hold him anymore.
”Why’re you so h-horny?!” His boyfriend whisper yells, holding onto the red ear Shoto had previously been sucking on like a lollipop with a wobbly frown.
Shoto burns bright red, his left side spiking with heat at the notion of him being ... horny.
”I want attention,” His eyes widen at what easily came out of his mouth, immediately backtracking before Izuku can start teasing him. “I-I mean, n-not attention, I just want you to, uh, to pay attention to me?”
Izuku bursts into a fit of melodic laughter, and Shoto pouts, turning his body away to hide the ever-burning flush on his cheeks.
”Awe, Sho. Don’t be upset with me. You want my attention, baby?” Shoto bites back a squeak at the sudden use of pet names. Pet names were such a weakness for him.
“Well obviously I want your attention,” Shoto grumbles, pouting harder when all Izuku does is giggle some more.
”How about we take a break for a while? That way you’ll have me all to yourself.” Izuku says, his socked feet padding over to where Shoto was sitting on the wood floor, still pouting.
Izuku giggles again, and Shoto shoves his face away with a hand, standing up and plopping himself on his boyfriends bed, face down. It smelled just like him, laundry detergent and cologne. Shoto loves that cologne. He thought it was sexy that Izuku even wore cologne in the first place.
“I’ll take that as a yes?” Izuku chuckles, his voice sounding directly above where Shoto had his face smushed against his All Might bed sheets.
Shoto groaned dramatically, lifting his body so that he could grab onto one of Izuku’s arms and pulling him down hard enough for him to land directly into Shoto’s chest with a surprised yelp, where he should’ve been this entire time.
”Shh, someone’s gonna hear us.” Shoto mumbles, shutting his eyes, binding his arms tighter around Izuku’s body, and pulling him closer into his chest.
Izuku scoffs, playfully slapping his bicep. “You surprised me.” He argues weakly, wiggling out of Shoto’s grip so that he could straddle his stomach.
Shoto stares up at him, kind of upset that he wasn’t in his arms, but the view was worth that tiny sacrifice. His Izuku was very beautiful. The most beautiful. Freckle dusted cheeks that were always pink, plump lips spread into one of the tiniest smiles, viridian eyes sparkling like real emeralds. So perfect, Izuku was so perfect.
Shoto reaches for his hands, interlocking them together, enjoying the small blush that takes over Izuku’s face.
”I love you.” Izuku whispers, the words slipping so effortlessly off his tongue, it makes Shoto a little flustered.
”I love you more.” Shoto whispers back, just as affectionately, and Izuku laughs through his nose.
Shoto tilts his head up, silently asking for a kiss, needing to feel Izuku in the most intimate way he knew how. Shoto wasn’t too good with words, but kisses, he was good at those.
Izuku leans, folding down at his waist to place his lips on Shoto’s, their hands still interlocked on both sides of Shoto’s head.
God, Shoto loves him. He loves Izuku so much. He feels it, especially when they’re kissing, he can feel something in his chest just burst. Just for him. Just for Izuku.
Izuku tilts his head to one side, deepening the kiss, inviting Shoto’s tongue into his mouth by swiping his own across Shoto’s bottom lip.
And he was the horny one.
Shoto gently pushes his tongue into Izuku’s mouth, relishing in the soft whimper his boyfriend lets out at the contact.
The room is silent, the only noise coming from their mouths coming together in a messy battle of tongues and lips. It’s heaven, Shoto almost feels like he’s floating.
Until ...
Bang! Bang! Bang!
”Midoriya-kun, can I have a word with you for a moment?” Iida, it was Iida.
Their mouths pop off from each other, both of them suddenly looking at the door in mild horror.
”Hide in the closet!” Izuku whispers, hastily climbing off Shoto and back onto the floor where his textbooks lay untouched for over thirty minutes.
Shoto clambers off the bed, quietly rushing over to the closet, and shutting it softly, giving Izuku the ok to answer the door.
”Uh, come in!” Izuku calls, and the door opens swiftly to reveal Iida in all his seriousness.
”Greetings, Midoriya-kun. I see you’re studying, that’s great!” Iida praises, and Izuku chuckles nervously, scratching his nape.
”Yup... studying. So, uh, what’d you come to ask me about?” He prompts, and Iida suddenly starts talking about Uraraka and Bakugo who have not stopped sparring since the morning, neither one stepping down to admit defeat.
Apparently, Izuku was the only one he could’ve called for this situation, seeing as he was somehow friends with the both of them. Shoto wanted to strangle Iida sometimes, and especially now. Did their make out session really get interrupted because of Uraraka and Bakugo? Maybe Shoto should strangle them too.
“I see,” Izuku sighs, already putting on his signature red shoes. “I’ll be down in just a minute, you can go right ahead, I’ll meet you there.”
”Thank you very much, Midoriya-kun. I apologize for interrupting your studying.” Iida says broadly, and then excuses himself.
After Shoto’s sure he’s gone, he steps out of the closet and goes straight back to Izuku’s bed, sitting down on a corner.
”I’m sure you heard all that,” He sighs piteously, walking over to peck Shoto’s mouth. “I’ll be quick, I hope.”
”It’s fine, go save Uraraka and Bakugo.” Shoto shrugs, leaning up to capture his boyfriends lips in another chaste kiss.
Izuku giggles, giving Shoto a final kiss before he walks out of his dorm room, waving once more from the door before he disappears from Shoto’s sight.
Great. Now Shoto was alone. He pouts when he realizes.
Maybe Izuku should get a do not disturb sign for his door.
“Today we’re going to be quirkless sparring, hence why you’re all in your P.E uniforms,” Aizawa sensei drawls, his gloomy eyes surveying the entire class. “I’ve already chose your partners based on last weeks progress reports, so sit tight until I announce the pairs.”
Shoto and Izuku look over at each other from opposite ends of the line, shooting each other smiles before turning back to face the front before they got caught by someone.
”First pair up, Bakugo and Midoriya,” Shoto tries not to perk up at the mention of his boyfriend’s name. The two called step into the ring, glaring competitively at each other.
“Rules are, no quirks, everything else is fair game. First one to step out of the ring or to be immobilized, loses.”
”Yeah, yeah, doesn’t matter, I’m still gonna blow this nerd to hell.” Bakugo growls, a tinge of seriousness in his otherwise ‘playful’ tone.
”We’ll see about that, Kacchan.” Izuku smirks, getting into a fighting stance.
Shoto’s glad those two have learned to coexist with each other, or at least Bakugo has learned. His eyes stay trained on Izuku.
”The rest of you can watch from the sidelines,” Aizawa sensei adds, and then turns back to the pair in the ring.
“Ready? Go!”
Bakugo is quick to start the match, unapologetically charging straight for Izuku’s stomach with a right hook, like always. Izuku, like always, with his fast reflexes dodges the punch, slipping to the left, which seemed to throw Bakugou off, giving Izuku just enough time to react by grabbing a handful of blond hair, drawing a reaction from the class.
”Chick fight!” Kaminari calls out, cheering on for the both of them.
Bakugo manages to land a solid knee to Izuku’s stomach, sending him scrambling down to the floor, looking out of breath. Shoto clenched his fist, but stayed put.
Izuku could hold his own. Shoto knows, but that doesn’t mean he won’t care if he’s hurt.
They continue on fighting for a good three minutes and Shoto’s sure Aizawa sensei was going to call it a draw anytime soon, so he sat back, watching with a proud eye as his boyfriend continued fighting with as much strength and stamina from when they started the match just seven minutes ago.
But then, somehow, Izuku ends up on the offensive, looking like he was struggling to block most of Bakugo’s powerful punches. Izuku let’s his guard down for just a second, a second is all it takes, and he ends up sprawled on the floor, knocked out cold, from an elbow jab to the soft spot high on his temple.
Bakugo definitely didn’t look like he meant it, immediately yelling out a string of curse words as he kneels down to flip Izuku over onto his back, blood spilling from his nose.
Aizawa sensei rushes over, telling his students to stay back, vaguely yelling at someone to go get Recovery Girl.
Shoto feels like he might vomit on someone. His feet feel super glued to the floor, he wants to go to Izuku, but he can’t. He should.
He does.
”Todoroki-kun, wait, Aizawa sensei said—!”
”I don’t care!” He hopes everyone will ignore the way his voice cracks when he yells.
“Todoroki, I told everyone to stay over by the sidelines,” Aizawa frowned, still crouching by Izuku’s side, keeping his fingers pinched on his bleeding nose.
”I don’t care.” Shoto repeats angrily, completely ignoring Bakugo, who is uncharacteristically quiet, and takes a spot on the other side of Izuku’s limp body. The side where a fresh purple bruise was just starting to form.
”Todoroki,” Aizawa sensei sounds angry, but Shoto could be angrier.
”Sensei, I’m not leaving.” He spits through his teeth.
”The both of you should leave,” Recovery Girl interrupts. “I’ve got Young Midoriya from here. Iida-kun will help transfer him to the infirmary.”
”But I—“ Shoto tries, and shuts his mouth as quickly as he opened it.
They were a secret.
“Nevermind,” he whispers, defeated.
”He’ll be in good hands, Todoroki-kun, no need to worry.” the elderly woman smiles, but it doesn’t do anything to calm his frayed nerves.
He nods anyway.
“B-Be careful with his head!” Shoto flinches, reaching out a hand over to Izuku’s still limp body which was now in Iida’s arms.
Iida sends him an understanding smile, it makes Shoto feel weird. “I’ll be gentle with him, I solemnly swear.”
Again, words do nothing to calm his nerves, but he nods distantly.
It was times like these where Shoto wished he and Izuku weren’t a secret.
With midterms finally being over, both written and practical, class 2-A decide to have a celebratory dinner in honor of their accomplishments they’ve achieved in their second year of high school.
A night Shoto was hoping to spend alone with Izuku, was now being spent with the entirety of his class. Not very Plus Ultra, if you ask him, but Izuku says otherwise.
“It’ll look suspicious if the both of us don’t show up anyway. There’s no way around this.” Izuku chuckles, shrugging out of his school blazer and undoing his knotted tie.
Shoto groans dramatically, flopping backward onto Izuku’s bed, making more of those sweet sounding giggles spill from Izuku’s lips.
“Mineta-kun’s gonna hear you,” Izuku chastises quietly, popping off the buttons of the white long sleeve dress shirt, Shoto watching him from his position on the bed.
“Nobody cares about him anyway,” Shoto scoffs when Izuku tells him its a rude thing to say. Shoto was just saying what was on everyone’s mind.
He’s got more important things to worry about, anyway. Like his sexy boyfriend.
“If you go any slower, it’ll be like you’re giving me a strip tease.” Shoto insinuates, only to get a warning look in return.
”Don’t even think about it.” Izuku says sternly, finally getting the last button to come undone, giving Shoto a perfect view of his boyfriends very toned back.
”Oh come on, you look so desirable right now.” Shoto sighs dreamily, now standing, slowly treading up to Izuku with a playful smirk.
”Shoto, we have to be down in like— in like right now!” Izuku admonishes, looking over at the All Might themed alarm clock that sat perfectly on his bedside table.
“We have time for some fun,” Shoto says, low into Izuku’s ear, kissing just below it, right where he likes them the most.
”No we— DON’T!”
Shoto unrelentingly captures Izuku’s sides with his hands. His fingers dancing all across the boys rippling abdominals and rib cage playing him like a piano, a song of laughter, when his fingers go in between the delicate bones there.
”Sh-Sh— STOP!” Izuku’s bending and twisting like a pretzel, probably surprising himself with how flexible he can truly be.
”Say you love me.” Shoto laughs, letting up on his relentless tickling to let Izuku catch his breath.
The boy spins around, out of breath and beautiful, leans on the wall behind him and sighs out an, “I love you” that makes Shoto’s heart swell.
”I love you more.” Shoto hums, bumping his forehead with Izuku’s.
Izuku pecks his lips quickly, and shoves him away, telling him to keep his hands to himself for the rest of the night.
A sacrifice Shoto was willing to pay if it meant he’d still get to hold Izuku everyday after tonight.
During dinner, they hold hands under the table when they’re sure nobody’s looking.
So much for keeping his hands to himself.
Every Saturday night, is movie night for those in class 2-A that actually want to participate in a movie night, which was the majority of them.
Though, Shoto kind of disliked them because he had to sit away from Izuku to not draw any any attention to themselves. But movie night was something Izuku liked to do with his friends, and Shoto wasn’t going to see his boyfriend unhappy for even a second. So he would bare the one or two hours where he couldn’t hold Izuku like he wished he could.
That was until this particular Saturday night.
Shoto and Izuku show up at different times, to avoid suspicion, and sit on opposite ends of the couch for extra precaution.
”Uh, did you guys get into a fight or something?” Kaminari asks, and Shoto pays him no mind, obviously not thinking the question was aimed at himself.
”Todoroki-kun?” Yaoyorozu says, pushing his shoulder with a dainty hand, snapping his mind out of whatever thoughts he had been previously thinking.
“What?” He asks, looking around the common room to find that almost everyone was looking at him with a worried look in their eyes.
”Did you and Midoriya get into, like, a fight or something? If you did then it’s gonna be kind of awkward, ‘cause we chose a romcom—“ Kaminari starts, and Shoto doesn’t let him finish, confused.
“Why are you asking if me and Iz— Midoriya got into a fight?” He asks, and now it’s his classmates turns to look confused.
”Yeah, what’s going on guys?” Izuku speaks up, sitting up straighter in his seat.
”Well, I don't know, don’t couples usually look like that?” Jiro deadpans, pointing a thumb over to where Bakugo and Kirishima were practically in each others laps.
While Bakugou yells at her to look away, Shoto goes over her sentence in his head.
Couples usually look like that
Wait— did that mean ...
”Hold on,” Shoto says, now standing. “You guys knew Izuku and I were in a relationship?”
“Oh my gosh! They’re on first name basis!” Ashido squeals to Uraraka, and Shoto flushes a bit.
”You guys weren’t exactly subtle,” Kaminari speaks up again. “Like when I caught you guys making out in the bathroom that one time.”
The two in question both choke on their spit, faces going a bright red in mere seconds.
”Oh, that’s right! I also caught Todoroki-kun in Midoriya-kun’s room when I asked him for some help with Uraraka and Bakugo.” Iida adds, and Shoto’s heart just about stops.
He saw him?
”H-How did you know Shoto was ... was in my, uh, dorm room?” Izuku asks meekly, looking off to the side.
”I saw his shoes beside your bed.” Iida says nonchalantly, sending the class into a fit of laughter and wolf whistles.
”Midoriya, get some!” Sero cackled, holding onto his stomach.
“Also, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but I did overhear you two having a ... how do I say this, a tickle fight?” Tokoyami adds, Shoto had completely forgotten that Izuku shared a floor with him too.
”And when they were holding hands under the table during the midterms dinner! That was adorable!” Ashido beams, and Shoto just about loses it.
”So you’re telling me, telling us, that this entire time you guys knew we were dating but never said anything about it?”
”We all kind of figured it out when you freaked out during quirkless sparring.” Ojiro says, and Shoto thinks back to what happened that day.
Oh.
Oh.
When he ... freaked out over Izuku’s injury? Shoto wilts when he realizes how telling that entire situation must’ve been. Wow, they really sucked at staying hidden, didn’t they?
“So you and Midoriya didn’t get into a fight?” Kaminari asks once more, and Shoto just shakes his head, unable to form a coherent sentence at the moment.
”Oh! Well then sit next to each other, ya weirdos.” He laughs, and Shoto looks over at his boyfriend, who’s already looking at him, and suddenly the biggest grin is tugging at the corners of his lips.
Izuku sits on Shoto’s lap for the entire movie.
Dating was hard. Is. Will always be, as long as the two of them continued wanting to be heroes, which they did.
But Shoto and Izuku would make it work.
They always did.
