Chapter Text
I heard a glass shatter on the wall in the apartment above mine
At first I thought that I was dreamin'
Keigo woke up to the sound of glass shattering. At first, he thought maybe he had knocked something over in his sleep but a quick survey of the room told him that it wasn’t him. Then he thought that maybe he imagined it.
But then I heard the voice of a girl
And it sounded like she'd been cryin'
Now I'm too worried to be sleepin'
Suddenly he heard/felt a voice. It was a girl and it sounded like she’d been crying. He sat up. It was the girl above him. He had seen her a few times but never long enough to talk.
So I took the elevator to the second floor
Walked down the hall and then I knocked upon her door
He walked to the elevator and went one floor up. He counted the doors until he came to the one right above his. He hesitated a moment before knocking.
She opened up and I asked about the things I've been hearing
She opened the door slowly. Her bright red hair was messy and her turquoise eyes were red. Keigo’s wings flared slightly. Someone had hurt her.
“Hey I thought I heard some glass shatter and someone crying. Is everything okay?” He asked.
She said, "I think your ears are playing tricks on you"
Sweater zipped up to her chin
"Thanks for caring, sir, that's nice of you
But I have to go back in
Wish I could tell you about the noise
But I didn't hear a thing"
She said, "It must have been the wind, must have been the wind
Must have been the wind, it must have been the wind"
“I think your ears are playing tricks on you.” She fidgeted with the zipper on her sweater. “Thanks for caring, sir, that’s nice of you. But I have to go back in.” She stepped back inside. “Wish I could tell you about the noise but I didn’t hear a thing. It must have been the wind.”
“Really?” He asked. “I could have sworn I heard something.”
She shook her head. “It must have been the wind.”
She said, "It must have been the wind, must have been the wind
Must have been the wind, it must have been the wind"
She closed the door and Keigo was left staring at the door.
“It must have been the wind huh?” He frowned.
He turned and walked back to his apartment.
So I was layin' on the floor of my room
Cold concrete on my back
No, I just couldn't shake the feeling
Keigo stared at the ceiling the next night. Someone had hurt her. She was upset about something. He just didn’t know what. He sat up as he heard something clatter to the floor above him.
I didn't want to intrude 'cause I knew that I didn't have all the facts
But I couldn't bear the thought of leavin' her
It was followed by a soft thump then sobs. Keigo jumped up, she was really upset this time. He knew it wasn’t his business but he couldn’t just leave her.
So I took the elevator to the second floor
Walked down the hall and then I knocked upon her door
He ran to the elevator, went up a floor and found her door. He could hear her sobs. He knocked on the door, no answer. He knocked again. He just wanted to let her know he was here for her.
She opened up and I asked about the things I've been hearing
She swung open the door, an angry look on her tear-stained face. The anger seemed to melt off her face.
“Is everything okay? I heard crying.” He wanted to reach out and wipe the tears from her cheeks.
“I think your ears are playing tricks on you.” She zipped her sweater up but not before he noticed the burns on her collarbone.
“Thanks for caring, sir, that’s nice of you but I have to go back in. Wish I could tell you about the noise but I didn’t hear a thing.” She shrugged. “It must have been the wind.”
She said, "It must have been the wind, must have been the wind
Must have been the wind, it must have been the wind"
“Well okay, if you need anything I’m downstairs. Right below you.” Keigo walked away, wings trailing behind him.
He couldn’t help but think of the burns on her collarbone. Was it her quirk? Or was someone hurting her? If someone was then he was going to find them and beat the hell out of them.
Aim my boombox at the roof, I'm playing "Lean on Me"
Just so that she knows that she can lean on me
And when she hears the words, I hope she knows she'll be okay
The next day Keigo waited for her to get home. He heard her door close and purse drop to the floor. He took his speaker and flew up to the ceiling. Quickly finding the song, he pressed play. Lean on Me blasted out from the speaker. He was for sure going to get noise complaints. But he hoped that at least she would know he was there for her.
Aim my boombox at the roof, I'm playing "Lean on Me"
Just so that she knows that she can lean on me
And when she hears the words, I know exactly what I'll say
Keigo did this for several days and got several noise complaints. Someone knocked on his door. At first, he ignored it, thinking it was someone else coming to complain. They knocked again, louder this time. He flew down and opened the door. When he saw the girl his eyes widened. He quickly went back inside and turned off the music. He came back and casually leaned against the doorframe.
“How can I help you?”
She hid a smile. “What did you mean with that song?”
Promise I'm not playing tricks on you
You're always welcome to come in
You could stay here for an hour or two
If you ever need a friend
“I promise I'm not playing tricks on you.” Keigo gestured for her to come inside. “You’re always welcome to come in. You could stay here for an hour or two if you ever need a friend.”
She hesitantly followed him inside. He walked into the living room, plopping down on the couch, wings splayed out behind him. She carefully sat beside him, moving a few feathers out of the way. He shifted his wings.
We can talk about the noise, when you're ready, but 'til then
I'll say, "It must have been the wind, must have been the wind
Must have been the wind, it must have been the wind"
“So…” Keigo trailed off. “Do you want to talk about the noise?”
She visibly stiffened. “What noise?”
He shrugged. “Never mind. It must have been the wind.”
I'll say, "It must have been the wind, must have been the wind
Must have been the wind, it must have been the wind”
He stretched a wing out. “Wanna touch it?”
“Can I?” She hesitantly reached out.
“Sure, I’m Takami. Keigo Takami.”
She ran her fingers through the bright red feathers. “I’m Rekka.”
He shivered at her touch. She smiled slightly, her smile could have brightened up any room. He smiled back at her. Maybe one day he could get her to talk about the noise.
