Chapter 1: Who'd Have Known

Chapter Text

Namjoon and Jungkook just recently confessed their feelings for each other. And to Jungkook, the way they confessed was kind of unreal. It was a normal day, the weather was nice, there were a few clouds in the sky, with the wind not too cold and not too warm.  They confessed on Namjoon's apartment complex's rooftop where the older invited the younger to check out the plants he's growing and to take a few pictures of them so he could print it out and put them in a little plant book he was making. While the two were on the rooftop, Jungkook admiring the flowers in their pots, some had already bloomed, the others are on their way to. With different colors and types, Jungkook thought that his friend was amazing. It was obvious that the older was a bit rough and heavy with his hands, what with him frequently breaking things so easily no matter how careful he is. But with these plants, he was so careful, so gentle as he talks to them while he's watering them.

With the late afternoon sun, Jungkook can't help but find the older so beautiful and endearing. So as discreetly as he could, he snapped a few pictures of the older, his smile so big and fond, his dimples showing and the way his nose was scrunched a little bit. He didn't know how long he was capturing his friend for, but when he watched through his camera lens as Namjoon's eyes went a little bigger as he was finally caught. He muttered a soft curse as he slowly lowered down his camera.

"I thought I told you to take pictures of my plants, Jungkook," Namjoon scolded but with no heat to it. Jungkook laughed and scratched the back of his neck. "Well, I was, but I got distracted," Jungkook yelled a slight protest as the older took the camera from him, careful with the strap wrapped around the younger's neck. Jungkook was shocked as he watched as Namjoon lifts the camera to his eyes and snaps a picture of Jungkook. The older looks at the photo that he took and smiled, handing the camera back to the younger. "It's a waste not to capture your bambi eyes in this light," Namjoon laughed breathlessly with Jungkook burning up inside, his heart beating a hundred miles per minute.

"You can't just say that, Joonie," he stuttered as he tried to keep his blush at bay. The older of the two laughed as he was putting away the sprinkler he used to water his plants. He takes a seat on the picnic table, and took out bags with take-out food and beer for the two to share.

"Are you gonna stay standing there the whole night or are you gonna sit and eat with me, Jungkookie?" Namjoon calls to the younger as he was setting the food out of its bag and lay it all out on the table. Jungkook internally slapped himself and moved his feet to the table, sitting in front of the older as he watch him fumble with the chopsticks. He laughs as he offers to do it instead, breaking them evenly in half and  offering it to the older, doing the same thing to his and they both started to enjoy the warm food, with the background noise of the busy city beneath them.

The hues and the clashing of colors of the evening sky amazes Jungkook. He watches as the sun slowly sets, the moon slowly taking its place in the sky. "Hey, Kook, check out this melody I came up with this morning, I was thinking of you when this suddenly came up." Namjoon said as he fished out his phone, pressing a couple of things before setting it down in between them. Jungkook couldn't process what the older said. He thought of a melody.. when he was thinking of him...? Jungkook couldn't piece it together until he heard the first beats of the song. It was like time stopped and it was just the two of them, enveloped in that beautiful melody  coming from Namjoon's phone. The melody was soft, gentle, serene, and yet it was also upbeat and fast, it sounds like cup of warm chocolate, like holding hands under the park, like the thrill of riding a rollercoaster. It was many things at once.

Jungkook couldn't form words after that. It was only a melody, Namjoon said it was only a minute and a half of the song, he said it was just a rough draft of the song but that he already written some lyrics, he said it reminded him of Jungkook a lot. Jungkook was overwhelmed, he didn't know how to react or what words to say. All he knows was that a dam was broken; his feelings for his friend was overflowing and he needed to leave in order not to do something stupid that could ruin years and years of friendship. Jungkook didn't know what to do so he just sat there, looking at his friend, who has been there for him for so many years.

"So, did you like it? I'm thinking maybe I could send this to Yoongi after I'm finished with it if you don't like it, ha-ha," Namjoon said after a few minutes of Jungkook just staring at him. He didn't know what the younger was thinking, but his silence definitely isn't sitting well with him. He thinks that maybe he shouldn't have showed him the song. Maybe Jungkook hates it. Maybe he found it weird. So many thoughts are running through Namjoon's head all at once but he keeps it at bay. He keeps his feelings at bay for the younger one. He doesn't want to put pressure on him.

"Joonie, I.. I love it, really. I-I love you," Jungkook mumbled to himself as quietly as he could. But apparently it wasn't as quiet as he hoped it would be.

"What?" Namjoon asked weakly, not really believing his ears. This must surely be a dream. Jungkook did not actually tell Namjoon he loved him on a Wednesday, spicy chicken and beer in their hands, on Namjoon's roof, with the city buzzing below them. He surely did not say those three words to him after years of his awful and awkward pining, did he?

"U-um, I mean, I loved the song, Joonie. You should definitely finish it. I can't wait to hear it, Joonie. Yes, that's.. that's what I said, really. Haha, nothing else lol" Jungkook rambled, actually saying 'lol' as his hands flew everywhere, his eyes as big as saucers as he tries to do some damage control. 'Shit,' he thought, 'why the hell did I say that stupid thing?'.

"No, I, I heard you, Kook. You.. you said you loved me?" Namjoon said, eyes never leaving the younger as he threw his chicken and beer aside, not caring what happens to them. Jungkook looks at the haphazardly thrown food. "J-Joonie, you shouldn't throw food away like tha-" Jungkook stopped in the middle of his sentence as he was grabbed by Namjoon by the shoulders, forcing him to look at the older.

"Jungkook, answer me, please," Namjoon whispered, desperation staining his expression and Jungkook sat stock-still. "Please tell me I didn't hear it wrong. Please tell me I'm not dreaming. Please tell me that meant something more than platonic bro thing," Namjoon hands was starting to sweat. He was slightly gripping Jungkook to ground him. He doesn't think he could survive if Jungkook denies it, but if that's the truth then that is what Namjoon will work hard to accept.

"Why do you want to know? Why are you asking me that, Joonie?" Jungkook asked, not really following why Namjoon is reacting this way.

"Because I've been in love with you all this time and if you confirm to me that it was only platonic then I can finally just move on and continue being your friend, Jungkook," Namjoon said in one breath, gulping as he waits for the younger to answer.

What? Is this real? Did Kim Namjoon, King of not being a fan of the word 'love' just told him he was in love with Jungkook? And that it's been a long time that he was in love? Is everything about this night real anymore? Jungkook couldn't really believe everything that is happening right now.

"You, Kim Namjoon, in love with me? Jeon Jungkook? Like, me me, Joonie? Are.. are you sure? Are you sure you got the right Jungkook?" Jungkook asked. "Because I've been in love with you for literally 6 years and I literally just accidentally blurted that out because you're so-" Jungkook couldn't form the right words to express himself. "Because you made this really beautiful melody and you said you thought of me when you made it but that melody was so beautiful and good and warm and bright and I just couldn't understand how that could have been made with me as your inspiration." Jungkook finishes as he took a long gulp of air.

Namjoon smiles in relief as he shakes his head, letting go of the younger to stroke the side of his face. Namjoon's chest tightened as he watched Jungkook nuzzled his face on his hand. "Well, that's how you make me feel, Jungkook. That's what I see when I look at you. Beautiful, warm, bright, thrilling, astounding, a breath of fresh air, early morning coffee. You're so good, so cool, so light, so exciting. Like, everyday is an adventure with you. You never not surprise me with how beautiful and exquisite you could be. I have never seen someone be so.. golden and just plain beauti-" Namjoon was stopped from his wourd vomit by Jungkook's hand.

"Please, Joonie, if you give me one more compliment I will literally become a puddle of goo right here on your roof," Jungkook huffed, his face all red up to his neck, his pout so cute and adorable Namjoon fought so hard to kiss it off him.

    "But that's what I-"

"Just come here and kiss me, please!" Jungkook stomped his foot as he pouted more, his blushing face getting more redder.

"I can do that," Namjoon mumbled as he leaned in, capturing the younger's lips in a soft and gentle kiss. The kiss was a new feeling for him. It was soft, and hesistant. Namjoon had a number of people that his kissed before, that he has done things with before. But this time, with Jungkook, feels like it was the first time for him. Jungkook's lips were soft, but chapped from the cold, a little thin on the upper lip but so full and soft on the lower. Namjoon deepened the kiss, wanting to get a bit more of Jungkook's taste. His lips tasted a little spicy and bitter from the chicken and beer, but there was still a hint of him on his lips. Namjoon found, that Jungkook tasted like strawberries. That must be the lip balm that he uses so frequently.

Jungkook cannot believe that this is happening. Namjoon really just confessed to him. And now they're kissing on his roof, under the clear night sky, his stomach full of spicy chicken and beer. He feels so warm and like he's floating. He feels as if this is merely another dream of him and he'll wake up in his bed, and it's the morning, and he'll cry because it was just a dream. But it doesn't feel like a dream, because Namjoon is big and warm against him and he's pulling Jungkook closer, and he smells like warm and caramel, sugary and spicy, he smells like Namjoon. It's real because Namjoon's hands are warm against him, burning through his clothes up to his very core. It's real because he feels Namjoon shivering and his legs twitch. Jungkok whimpers and moans, putting his arms around Namjoon's neck and pulling him closer, kissing him deeper.

They kiss for so long, the night was spent on Namjoon's rooftop, the two men sharing many kisses and hushed whispers, laughter and more kisses. Until Jungkook shivered continuously, his nose red and cold, and Namjoon kissed his nose and told them they should come inside. Jungkook nodded and went to stand up, grabbing his phone and looking at the time, he couldn't believe he spent 7 and a half hours with Namjoon just outside his rooftop and kissing him. He finds he doesn't mind and would gladly do it again.

When they got back inside Namjoon's warm and cozy apartment, they were inseparable. Jungkook plopped himself beside Namjoon on the couch as they cuddled while they watch a rerun of some reality show. When it gets around 12 am, Namjoon decided to call it a night and they slept in Namjoon's bed, their arms around each other, with the promise of tomorrow in their hearts.
