Summary
Alexander has no one.
No mother, no friends, not even a real home.
What he does have are a few precious keepsakes saved from the ruins of the hurricane that ravaged his island and nearly killed him, a brilliant mind, and a chip on his shoulder larger than he knows what to do with. Any living family that the fourteen-year-old has either doesn't want him or can't afford to take care of him, leaving him in and out of foster care since his cousin and uncle died, and after living in five different households in three years, he doesn't have much hope of things ever getting better.
When Alex is told he's being removed from the St. Raphael's Healing House after a prolonged stay to recover from his injuries sustained in the storm, and a month before Christmas no less, he's not surprised. Even still... a small part of him can't help but ache for a miracle.
He just never expected that miracle would come in the form of his newly-located biological father. George Washington; married family man, farmer, honorably discharged General of the United States Army... oh yeah, and up until a few days ago he'd had no idea that Alexander even existed.
The universe had a twisted sense of humour.
