Romance Is Overrated
Chapter 1: He's Not My Type!
…
Dear diary,
Today there was an election on who will take care of the school garden, like a good student I naturally raised my hand! The fact that Yugi-senpai is usually practicing soccer by the garden had nothing to do with it!
Nope!
Not at all!
It had everything to do with it.
Yashiro Nene, 16 and full of life!
She's the heroine in her own imaginary world full of princes and everything she's ever wanted!
When she entered middle school she expected to finally be able to find her type and be confessed to like all the other girls. Except Nene wasn't so lucky…
Nobody wanted her because of her daikon legs!
"Who are you? It's kind of creepy… plus you have daikon legs, you're not my type."
Nene was crushed! Utterly humiliated! Mortified!
That day she practically locked herself in an empty classroom to cry her heart out. Even though some people would find it sad and even feel bad for her, Nene found it lucky!
Why may you ask?
Well, that day she met Yugi-senpai!
Yugi Amane, 17 and totally not her type!
But he was… charming in a way.
He entered the classroom shocked to find her in such… terrible conditions.
"You okay?" He asked looking at her with a concerned expression.
Nene hid her face, embarrassed to even be seen. "Yeah, I'm fine." Except she wasn't! She was utterly devastated! Completely dead inside! Her life was ruined!
Ruined!
He obviously didn't believe her and honestly, she didn't even believe herself. He sat by her hoping she would open up, but why would she? She just met him and she definitely didn't want people knowing about her humiliating confession.
In the end, she caved in and confessed everything.
"And then he said I had daikon legs and that I wasn't his type!" She cried out even louder than before, all remaining dignity clearly lost.
Yugi-senpai patted her shoulder and smiled at her as his way of consoling her. "There, there, you shouldn't let them get to you."
She sniffled and wiped some tears away as she faced him. "I know but… it still hurts knowing nobody wants you because of something you can't help!"
He stared at her before smiling rather… smugly. "Oh? Well, they're just blind then… I think you're cute."
Nene had never felt her heart burst out of her chest before, and boy was it a feeling. She was sure she was blushing like a tomato that day as he laughed at her expression.
Even though they didn't talk much after as he had to leave Nene felt incomplete after that.
They weren't friends and he never disclosed his name at all.
She had to find out through… detective means.
She totally wasn't a stalker!
He's not her type!!
Even so after all these years… Nene liked looking at him.
"Amane over here!"
They were practicing today as usual- Nene was out doing gardening work with her friend Aoi-chan.
Aoi who had noticed Nene's staring decided to tease her a bit. "Nene-chan, if you like Yugi-senpai so much why don't you go talk to him?"
Akane Aoi, 16, same class as Nene and has a childhood friend that constantly stalks her.
Nene blushed as her intense staring was broken. "W-W-What!? NO! I don't like him at all!! He's not even my type!" She began to ramble on and on about meaningless things in order to change the conversation.
Aoi merely smiled at her friend's antics and decided it was best to drop it for now.
Nene sighed as her heart calmed down a bit after watching Yugi-senpai so much. He was not her type! She just… liked watching him.
"Great work today Amane-kun!"
"Thanks!"
Nene smiled as her staring continued, she just couldn't help it… he's so-
"Daikon-senpai, are you stalking Yugi-senpai again?"
"WHAT!?" Her shriek was so loud it caught everyone's attention, everyone, including Yugi-senpai! She blushed madly as she glared at her friend Mitsuba.
Mitsuba Sousuke, 15, part of the middle school division and really full of himself!
He looked at her with that damn smug expression that was obviously mocking her.
"Mitsuba-kun don't do that! And stop calling me daikon-senpai!" She felt extremely embarrassed as she was sure people were still staring.
"Sorry, but teasing you is so easy, right Aoi-senpai?"
"Right!"
Nene looked at them in shock. "You two are mean!"
They both laughed as they continued working in the garden. Mitsuba was taking pictures of their progress and helped wherever he could.
"You two are really good at this gardening stuff." He said as he looked at the pretty flowers that were growing nicely. He took a picture for remembrance.
Nene smiled at her hard work. "Yup! Aoi-chan and I were definitely the right choices for this job!"
Aoi-chan beamed. "That's right Nene-chan!"
Mitsuba hummed as he thought for a bit. "How come you guys haven't started a gardening club?"
Nene and Aoi looked at each other.
"That's a good idea Mitsuba-kun!" Aoi clapped her hands together. "We should totally do that Nene-chan!"
"Yes!" Nene was so excited at the idea that she started jumping up and down.
Mitsuba and Aoi looked behind her and smiled knowingly. Unbeknownst to Nene, she had an audience.
"It's going to be so much fun!" She exclaimed happily, still unaware of the presence behind her.
Mitsuba decided to tease her. "That'll give you more time to stare at Yugi-senpai!"
Nene blushed and began stuttering. "What!? No! He's not my type!!"
"I'm not your type?"
Nene froze in complete horror when she recognized that voice behind her. She watched as Mitsuba tried so hard not to laugh and Aoi tried to contain her giggles.
Those damn traitors!
"Y-Yugi-senpai!" She greeted trying hard to suppress her blush but that was impossible. "I didn't know you were there!"
He gave her that same smug smile she's grown to love for some odd reason. "It's a good thing, it's always interesting to hear people's darkest secrets."
Nene's blush was officially melting her. "I swear I don't stare at you!" She blurted but quickly covered her mouth as everyone just looked at her oddly as if saying that is just a confirmation of guilt.
Mitsuba couldn't hold back his laugh while Aoi's giggles were also heard.
Those god damn traitors!
Yugi-senpai kept looking at her oddly which made Nene nervous. Did she upset him? Is he going to tell her off? He probably hates her now!
He smirked as if reading her mind. "It's too bad I'm not your type because…" He got closer to her and whispered in her ear. "You're definitely my type."
Nene died that day.
…
As she fed her pet hamster Black Canyon, she replayed the events of today. Her blush crept up to her face again remembering Yugi-senpai's teasing.
She was sure he was just playing with her. At the very least he takes her weirdness with humor and doesn't outright reject her. She definitely needs to let Mitsuba and Aoi have it since they planned that whole mess.
It was a good thing she never said she liked Yugi-senpai-
No wait, he's not her type!
Definitely not her type…
"You're definitely my type."
Who was she kidding? She definitely likes him! A lot, too much! She might even love him!! Was it too early to say that? Was it even possible to love someone so quickly? He made her heart flutter too much and too quickly. It was like a dream, he was a prince in his own way and it made her super happy! Out of all the boys in the school, he was the only one who's ever been that nice to her and even called her cute!
She was blushing like crazy and she was sure her parents were looking at her weird. She should probably start eating her dinner before they ask what was wrong or if she had a fever. She doesn't have a fever! She's just extremely flustered and completely enamored with a boy in her school that she swore was not her type!
Screw types, she loved him and she didn't care if it was too early to say that!
She threw herself into her bed completely exhausted. She scrolled through her phone in hopes of distracting herself a bit.
She realized she had taken a lot of photos of Yugi-senpai throughout their middle school years and now-
"I have a problem." She muttered to herself.
She was a total stalker!
If he found out about this he'd likely hate her! He'd definitely have a proper reason to call her creepy and disgusting!
What was she going to do?
Should she finally confess or lock away her feelings?
In fact, wouldn't someone as popular as Yugi-senpai already have a girlfriend?
Actually… what if he does!?
The thought actually pained her unknowingly. Seeing him with another girl…
NEVER!
IT WOULD BE HELL!!
She looked all over his social media for a sign, anything! That he was single and therefore ready for her to woo over!
Except like all of her failed romances, this one was a failure from the start despite the fact that it never started.
Yugi Amane is in a relationship with Nanamine Sakura
Her heart was utterly shattered so much that she cried herself to sleep that night.
She fixed herself breakfast as she didn't want her parents to see her reddish eyes. She hoped they would go away by the time she went to school but luck wasn't on her side.
"Nene-chan are you okay?" Aoi immediately went to her friend's side who looked like she was about to break apart.
"Aoi-chan…" She couldn't help but embrace her friend as tears flowed down her cheeks. Her classmates were kind of confused seeing her all depressed considering she was usually always cheery.
Aoi decided to ask her what was wrong during lunch. "Nene-chan, now that we're alone will you tell me what's wrong?"
Right then and there Nene vented, she vented hard. She just couldn't with the unimaginable pain! She finally admitted to loving Yugi-senpai only for him to have a girlfriend!
Aoi looked at her completely shocked. "Yugi-senpai has a girlfriend!? I was sure he was single!"
"No, he has a girlfriend!" She cried some more as Aoi held her close.
Mitsuba who had been looking everywhere for them walked into the scene completely taken aback. "Is this a bad time…?"
Nene looked at him with tears in her eyes. "No." She continued her crying session.
Aoi sweatdropped and motioned for Mitsuba to sit next to her so she could explain.
"Wait what? But I thought Yugi-senpai was single?"
"Right!"
As her friend's discussed the sudden relationship status of her dear crush she looked over to the field where he would usually play with his friends and sighed. All of this was going to be bad for her heart.
And sure enough, it was!
That afternoon as she and her friends tended to the gardens a mysterious girl with green hair was sitting by the benches watching the guys play.
"She's a total babe Aoi-chan!" She looked over in shock.
Aoi's eyes went wide. "You don't think that's…"
"His girlfriend?" Mitsuba finished for them.
The three couldn't help but stare.
Even more so when Yugi-senpai walked over to her and smiled, she handed him his water bottle as they chatted rather friendly.
Almost too friendly.
Nene's heart couldn't take it as tears began to invade her vision.
"Nene-chan let's stop looking," Aoi suggested as she and Mitsuba forced Nene to look away from the scene.
But Nene couldn't help her negative emotions that day.
And the emotions that continued to flood her mind for the rest of the week.
The girl kept coming to all of the practices and they always looked happy together. It hurt, it would be a lie if she didn't admit it.
It really hurt her and she kept torturing herself by watching them.
Aoi and Mitsuba were getting concerned.
"Nene-chan."
"Daikon-senpai?"
Nene's absent reaction to the nickname she loathed completely sent Aoi and Mitsuba over the edge.
She's completely NOT okay!
Nene's sigh even sounded depressing!
"Nene-chan-" Aoi was interrupted by Nene who turned around and continued gardening.
"It's okay… he wasn't my type anyway."
Mitsuba and Aoi looked at each other in worry.
And so began the plan.
Operation break up!
Mitsuba and Aoi were going to find ways to break those two up and have Yugi-senpai notice Nene!
When they told Nene the plan she absolutely had no reaction.
"Do whatever you want." She looked the other way not really wanting to be a part of this.
Her friends were in shock.
She's really not okay…
…
Mitsuba was kind of bored of following Amane all day. It was the same old deal, classes, lunch, hangouts with friends and for some odd reason he would always go to the broadcasting club.
At first, he didn't understand why but then he realized his girlfriend was part of the club!
He got close to the door in order to hear what was being said.
"So how did it go?"
"It's going great!"
Mitsuba couldn't really hear much so he tried to get closer but was immediately stopped by-
"What are you doing?"
Mitsuba froze in place when he realized who had caught him.
Yugi Amane has a sibling, a twin to be exact.
Yugi Tsukasa.
"Uh… I can explain?" He looked at him nervously hoping this wouldn't ruin their plan.
Tsukasa observed him before picking him up by the shirt, literally, and forcing him to enter the club.
"Look who I found outside the door spying!" He announced rather cheerfully.
Mitsuba deadpanned at the situation he found himself in. Inside the club was Amane, his girlfriend and some other guy he didn't really recognize.
Amane looked at him but soon recognition flashed in his eyes. "Hey aren't you Yashiro-san's friend?"
Oh shit.
Mitsuba panicked, he panicked hard. "Uh… maybe?" What was he supposed to say!? Aoi did NOT prepare him for this!
Amane looked at him confused. "You okay?"
Mitsuba was sweating bullets, which sucked, he has a cute reputation to hold. "Uh… yes." That was hella lame even for him.
"Okay…" Amane was clearly more confused than ever. "Tsukasa let him go."
"Okay!"
Down went Mitsuba and so did his pride.
Now he found himself in the middle of some weird tea party.
"Amane! Amane! I made these cookies all by myself! Try them!"
"Alright Tsukasa, calm down."
Mitsuba felt extremely out of place, not to mention he couldn't help but hate Amane right now due to the pain he was causing to his friend.
"Drink some tea if you want Mitsuba-kun." The green-haired girl smiled at him which caused some conflicting feelings.
He should hate this girl but he couldn't.
And he was sure Nene would likely feel the same way.
"Thanks…" He drank some and it was the most amazing tea ever. He was officially won over.
Wait no, Nene was his friend! He shouldn't be having tea with her rival!
But the tea and sweets are so good though…
Shit.
"So what's been bothering you Mitsuba-kun?" The green-haired girl asked.
Mitsuba kind of did want to confess everything but he couldn't because it involved them in the first place.
It was fine as long as he never disclosed names right?
"And now she's upset because he has a girlfriend!" In the end, Mitsuba let out what was worrying him without disclosing any information.
"I see." She nodded. "And you want to help her?"
He nodded tears in his eyes. "I just feel so bad for her, she's always rambling about having bad luck in romance that this whole thing just makes me more depressed."
At this, it caught Amane's attention without Mitsuba realizing it.
"Bad luck in romance? That's terrible."
"It is! Poor Senpai." He was sad, but the tea was really good. "My friend and I swore he was single!" He sighed in frustration.
She nodded, listening to his venting.
Amane narrowed his eyes. "And this friend of yours…"
Mitsuba froze in place.
"Who is it if you don't mind me asking?"
Oh shit, what does he say? Mitsuba was hoping they didn't ask for more information. "Uh… I'd rather not say…"
Amane hummed, clearly curious. "Why not? We won't tell anyone."
Everyone was staring at Mitsuba waiting for an answer. His actions that day were out of panic, but he was sure Nene would understand… right?
"My friend Nene-senpai!"
"Yashiro-san?"
"Who's her crush?"
"Minamoto Teru!"
It was the first name that popped into Mitsuba's mind and now he officially regrets it. He doesn't even know if Minamoto Teru actually has a girlfriend!
He decided to quickly save himself. "Although we aren't really sure if Minamoto-senpai does have a girlfriend, Nene-senpai could just be imagining things…" He was so dead, Nene is going to kill him.
No, Aoi is going to kill him first.
"So I've been digging around… which is why you saw me spying earlier." His lie was getting bigger and bigger, he was digging himself a hole he was sure he'll never crawl out of.
"Well, there was that recent rumor about Minamoto getting a girlfriend."
"Oh! Sakura! You actually listen to rumors?" Tsukasa said, off-topic but Mitsuba can't complain.
"I just hear them occasionally." She stated as she drank some more tea. "Anyway I'm sure Minamoto doesn't have anyone yet, I suggest she confess her feelings, get them out of the way as soon as possible."
"As expected of my lady- AGK!" The boy Mitsuba didn't recognize immediately got hit by a book Sakura had.
Actually, where did that book come from?
"Don't touch me Natsuhiko." She said as she hid the book back in- where was the book?
"Always the charmer." The boy was under the table in pain.
Mitsuba was utterly confused, did he really try and flirt with someone else's girlfriend… in front of said boyfriend!?
Amane sighed and looked at Mitsuba, he couldn't tell what expression he was making. "So Mitsuba-kun…"
"Yes?"
"Is Minamoto Teru her type?"
The question made everyone freeze except Mitsuba, he was surprisingly oblivious to Amane's deteriorating mood.
"He is, she likes handsome, prince types." He answered not even realizing how tightly Amane was holding the table.
Everyone continued sipping their tea as if they don't notice the tension that was building up in the room.
Mitsuba felt his phone vibrate.
From Aoi:
Where are you?
To Aoi:
From Mitsuba:
You're gonna kill me when I tell you
From Aoi:
To Mitsuba:
What did you do!?
Mitsuba said his goodbye as he left the room quickly and prayed Aoi wouldn't kill him.
As he left Amane's smile turned into a frown and not a good one.
Tsukasa smirked. "Oooo, Amane is jealous."
Amane's teacup immediately broke and shards of glass were all over the table, floor, and even his hand.
"Jesus fucking christ dude." Natsuhiko quickly got up for the first aid kit.
Sakura glared at Tsukasa. "Don't tease your brother."
Tsukasa pouted. "I didn't mean it, plus I'm right, he's mad jealous!"
Amane glared at Tsukasa. "Shut up!" He hid his face, not even looking up at Natsuhiko who quickly treated the wound he caused himself.
Sakura sighed. "You should have just confessed to her."
Amane really should have confessed to her.
"Also you owe me a new teacup."
Shit.
