For a moment Giorno thought about nothing. Bright dew was clinging to Mista’s dark curls and the sun cast no shadow. There was no conversation, no chatter, no complaints or questions. Silence would have been suffocating. Instead, grasshoppers’ sizzling and some far-off birdsong became a comfortable tapestry of background noises.
“You’re an unhappy man,” said Mista. He blew out a long wisp of cigarette smoke.
“You’re nosy.”
The man in the carriage seat laughed again. Giorno liked the sound of his laugh. It was rich and unembarrassed. “Spoken by the man who came looking for me before even knowing my name.”*
Visiting Italy alone and burdened by troubles from back home in England, Giorno Giovanna meets the lively and low-class Guido Mista. Despite Giorno's reservations they fall in love against the backdrop of Florence's historical and natural beauty.
