Work Text:

“So,” Trucy says, leaning over the edge of the couch. Phoenix is determinedly looking through the classifieds of the newspaper, highlighting job openings close enough to bike to. Godot is standing by the coffee machine, making his morning brew. It’s not a lot. But they’re doing their best.

“What’s up, Trucy?” Phoenix sets aside the paper with a sigh. It was too early for this.

She smiles at him with an ear to ear grin and she melts his early morning frustrations away. It’s been a week and already Phoenix knows he’d do anything for her.

“If you’re going to be my new daddy, then what should I call Mr. Godot?”

“Uh…” Phoenix hasn’t thought about this. At all, really. He hadn’t expected Godot to stick around, after he was disbarred. He wasn’t upholding Mia’s legacy anymore, wasn’t fighting for justice. But still, he stayed. And he helped him adopt Trucy even, something worth even more. “I guess that’s up to you, Truce. You don’t even have to call me Daddy, if you don’t want to.”

“Well, I do! You and Mr. Godot are really nice, and I live with you! I don’t want to just call him “Mr. Godot” for the rest of time!” She flounces onto the sofa by Phoenix, and he moves over to give her room.

Godot makes his way towards them, a mug of coffee for phoenix and a smaller one full of cocoa for Trucy. “Technically, we did sign marriage papers to adopt her more easily, so it wouldn’t be… inaccurate.” He hands the mugs to them.

Phoenix shoots Godot a look, and he sips his coffee as a response. He holds his hands up in mock offense. “I’m just saying, let the little lady do what she wants.”

She gives him a wink. “You’re sweet, Mr. Godot! How does… Bonus Daddy sound?” At that, Phoenix gives him a shit-eating grin.

“Trucy, if you really like—

“Trite, I swear to all that is holy—

Phoenix waves one finger teasingly. “Not around kids, Godot.” He leans over and mock-stage whispers to her, “You picked that one on purpose, didn’t you.”

Said kid giggles in response.

Godot grits his teeth, but there’s no real anger there. “Trucy, if that’s what you really want to call me, feel free.”

Trucy smiles and gives him a hug, officially melting even the fake disapproval off his face. “Thanks! But nah, I’m gonna go with Dad!”

“Sounds good to me,” Phoenix nods. “You know though, that Godot and I aren’t actually together, right?”

At Trucy’s confused look, he quickly amends his statement. “Romantically, I mean. You can still call him Dad, and we still care about each other a lot, but—"

“It’s okay, I know what you mean!” Trucy interrupts. “There was a couple in the troupe like that!”

He sighs in relief. He was starting to stick his foot in his mouth there. “Thanks again, Godot. For being so good about this.”

Godot smiles. “I’ll gladly be married to you for as long as you want, Wright. Anything for Trucy.” He takes a long, slow sip, down to the dregs. “But if Edgeworth asks you out, I want a divorce.”

Phoenix spits out his coffee as Godot laughs.
