Work Text:
“A-are you sure this is how we’re supposed to do it?” Mafu asked, slight confusion in his voice as he scrolls through his boyfriend’s phone, skimming through the recipe.
The two men were trying to make a nice plate of omurice. Anku had seen someone online making a perfect plate of one and was compelled to cook the same thing for him and Mafu. He knew he was about to cook a pretty difficult dish, but he was sure that he could try to make one with Mafu’s help.
A blond man stood beside him with several plates of failed attempts of making omelette rice. Anku scrunches up his nose in frustration, clearly confused by why he was unable on making a decent omelette.
“Yeah! I’ve read the recipe over and over,” Anku sighs, grabbing some more rice from the cooker and a few more eggs from the fridge. “I just don’t know what I’ve been doing wrong! I’m usually great with eggs!”
He wasn’t. He really wasn’t. Mafu knew this too, he’s seen Anku cook eggs before and he truly wasn’t great at cooking them. Sometimes the blond would accidentally leave in eggshells in the pan and question why his eggs turned out crunchy. One one instance, he saw Anku try to fry an entire raw egg in an attempt to make a tempura.
Though he wasn’t great at cooking, Mafu did find that part of Anku really endearing. He was determined and not one to give up so easily. It sort of reminded him of how the blond tried to ask him out a few years then. He’d always send an assortment of bizarre, yet cute gifts to the albino in attempt to woo him.
In the end it really worked, and now they’ve been dating for two years.
Mafu just couldn’t help but crack a small smile at how much he adored the blonde.
“Mafu-kun, why’re you smilin’ all of a sudden?” Anku asks, snapping Mafu away from his thoughts. “Oh~ You’re thinkin’ about me, aren’t ya!” He adds, getting the albino’s face to erupt into a blush.
“G-go focus on your cooking, please!”
The blond laughs at his flustered boyfriend, before facing the stove once again, setting down the plate on the counter.
Cutting a small chunk of butter, he gently drops the bit onto the fry pan, making sure it melts all over the surface of the pan.
“Anku-san, do you want me to help you out..? I think I’m pretty good at cooking…” Mafu says as he rubs his hand on Anku’s arm, gently rubbing the other man’s arm. Anku lets out a small sigh, planting a small kiss on Mafu’s temple and inciting the taller to giggle.
“Of course, Mafu-kun! Here, you can take care of the rice!” Anku says with a smile, passing a smaller pan over to the albino. “I’ll take care of the eggs!”
Though he was happy to help his lover, Mafu was quite scared at how Anku’s nth attempt at making omurice would turn out. His previous dishes were either overcooked, unedible, or just ugly. (Mafu insisted that it was okay, but Anku was adamant on making a dish that looks good)
Happily, the albino grabbed the handle of the pan and turn on his side of the stove, getting another chunk of butter once it started to heat up. Before putting the rice in, Mafu noticed something off with the rice.
“E-eh, Anku-san...Why is the rice so hot?”
“Is the rice not supposed to be hot?”
“No..It’ll stick to the pan if the rice isn’t cool enough!”
Anku stood there in silence, feeling dumbfounded again. Shaking his head, he went back to his own pan, trying to crack a few eggs.
“I-I’m sure it’s fine, Mafu-kun! You can put it in!” The blond puffed up his chest in confidence, all whilst he mixed the egg along with bits of the shell still inside. It’s a miracle how Anku was able to survive for this long.
“Well I hope this pan is non-stick…. I don’t feel like scraping rice off….” Mafu sighs out, carefully dumping out the contents of the bowl into the pan. Some grains were stuck the pan, as expected, but he was pleasantly surprised to see that most of the rice was cooking well.
Once Mafu started to get into the cooking process, Anku could see an enthusiastic smile painting itself on his boyfriend’s face. Though he knew he should focus on his own cooking, seeing Mafu happy and having fun made his heart soar.
The albino was passionate, he always put everything into his work. This was no different, Mafu was putting his all into this dish, but he could feel himself having lots of fun as he cooked alongside Anku, and he could also feel a pair of golden eyes looking at him as he added in the cooked chicken and ketchup into the mix.
Suddenly, the taller of the two felt a weight pressing against his back. From behind, Anku wrapped his arms around the albino, embracing him tightly as Mafu let out a little squeak.
“E-eh! Aren’t you supposed to be making the eggs..?!” Mafu said, wriggling. He loved Anku’s hugs, sure, but they were cooking right now! Thank heavens that Anku wasn’t frying the eggs now.
“Aw, but you’re so cute………and waaaarm…….” Anku slurs out, nuzzling his face into the back Mafu’s neck, inhaling his sweet scent as the albino kept trying to keep his focus on the fried rice. It was difficult, with Anku being all affectionate like this. He felt so warm, and it was all just so distracting.
“The eggs, Anku-saaan!” Mafu whined, puffing his cheeks up cutely. Oh god, this was bad for Anku’s heart. After planting another kiss on the taller’s cheek (as hard as it was; Mafu was just so goddamn tall.), the blonde went back to stirring the eggs.
Once deemed good enough, he poured the eggy mixture into the scorching hot pan. Anku bit his lip tensely, his grip on the pan’s handle tightening as he stirred the mixture. Everything was going smoothly, as he thought.
It wasn’t long until Mafu was finally finished with his plate of rice. After scooping up the reddened grains into a bowl , he waited for the rice to cool and mold into the shape of said bowl. Whilst trying to keep his attention on the eggs, Anku turned his gaze slightly to take a small look at the fried rice.
“Oh! That looks really good Mafu-kun!”
“A-ah.. Thank you..”
Mafu’s face would heat up pretty quickly whenever Anku complimented him, the blonde just couldn’t help but find the albino absolutely adorable. Whipping his head back to his pan, Anku could feel his smile growing.
The eggs had started to cook nicely; its center was starting to scramble slightly among a sea of runny eggs, its corners frying up quite nicely.
Mafu was quite surprised. Anku usually fucked up whenever he cooked eggs, hell, he couldn’t even make a sunny side up even if he tried! Seeing Anku actually nail this admittedly pretty difficult recipe was nothing short of astonishing to the albino.
It didn’t take long for the omelette to finish cooking. Now comes the tricky part, the flip. Anku nervously swallowed some spit as he prepared the egg in its position, his hand shaking as they assumed position.
Oh god, Mafu couldn’t watch this. He thought about the mess he’d have to clean up if Anku were to drop the egg. He made a mental note to scrub the kitchen clean if such a thing were to happen.
Luckily he was proven wrong.
Moving his arm up in a fast, yet steady motion, Anku flipped the egg. Holding his breath as the omelette hang in the air for a second, before successfully landing down onto the hot pan.
The two men stared in bewilderment at the successful flip, before they closed the gap between one another with a tight hug.
“I was..so scared!!” Mafu whined out, holding tightly onto the blonde’s shirt.
“Me too!!”
After their quite melodramatic embrace, the two went back to cooking. Mafu grabbed the bowl of rice and grabbed a wide plate, quickly flipping the bowl down right after he set the it on top of the table. Once he removed the bowl, the rice stood on the ceramic plate, perfectly molded into the bowl’s shape.
It didn’t take long for Anku to be done with his part as well. One Anku deemed the egg to be cooked to perfection, he slowly tilted his pan over the rice, making sure to drop the egg down gently.
He was tense, quite scared, but the blonde did it. The egg sat on the bed of rice neatly, though slightly slipping down on one side.
Mafu reached down to grab a knife from the drawer to cut the omelette open. Drawing the blade over the thin skin of the egg, the omelette unraveled, revealing the slightly scrambled insides.
It was a perfect dish of omurice.
Mafu and Anku stared at the dish before them, their jaws almost dropping in awe of the result before them. The omurice turned out to look just like the pictures. Neither of them were really that skilled, so seeing the entire dish turn out so well was just surprising to the both of them.
“You first, Mafu-kun!” Anku says with a wide smile. Stars seemed to sparkle in his eyes as he passed the spoon over to Mafu. Mafu could only return the same smile the blonde gave him after dropping a kiss on his cheek, taking the spoon from his hand.
Mouthing a small ‘thank you’, Mafu took a small piece of the dish and put it in his mouth. As soon as he tasted the small bit of omurice, his face contorted into an odd expression.
“Hm? Mafu-kun, what’s the matter?”
The shorter of the two stared as Mafu went over to the sink to spit out the omurice, heading towards the water dispenser to grab himself a cold cup of water. After smacking his lips to get the taste out, Mafu looked back at his boyfriend, eyes meeting once more.
“How much salt did we put in this?”
“E-eh?!” Anku grabbed the spoon Mafu had , taking an even bigger bite of the omurice. Immediately, the immense flavor of salt filled his mouth, almost dehydrating him at an instant. Forcing down a swallow, Anku grabbed a cup of water and downed it all in one go.
“Damn, we must’ve put in too much, huh?”
“Well obviously..”
The two stared at the plate of omurice. They worked so hard on it, but it wasn’t edible at all. Anku deeply wanted to throw it away, he felt like he failed again. Even with his boyfriend’s help, he kept fucking up the recipe.
“Shit, I’m sorry Mafu…I really wanted to make something nice for you but-“
He was taken by surprise when Mafu sat down and grabbed another spoon, pulling up another chair for Anku to sit right by him.
“..I thought it tasted terrible..”
“W-well it does! But I feel bad, you worked really hard on this!” Mafu answered, his cheeks puffed up in an attempt to get Anku to eat along with him.
Letting out a sigh, Anku sat down, pulling the albino in for a peck on the lips. Mafu kissed back, smiling as Anku pulls away.
The meal was ultimately shitty, despite how good it looked on the outside. Regardless, the two tried to make fun of it, happily chatting away as they ate the terrible meal; all whilst their hands were joined together, resting atop the dinner table.
They didn’t really care about how horribly salty the eggs and rice were, all that mattered at that second was just the two of them.
Bonus:
“Ow! What the-? Something in the egg….it poked my mouth!” Anku winced as he held his cheek. Whatever poked him in there must’ve been something quite sharp.
“Anku-san…..you put some eggshells in the mix….”
