Witch In the Sky

Summary:

Shouta had always figured witches would all have dark hair and hunch over bubbling cauldrons, like the Halloween stories like to tell.

It's... Somewhat of a surprise that this witch has such bright blonde hair, like the sun, and seems to bumble through spell casting as if he were trying to figure it all out on his own.

The first time that he'd ever actually interacted with him, though, was when a spell backfired near horrifically and he had to save the young man's life.

Notes:

First part in a small series! This was an adorable AU that Balentay and I RP'd together. (We've explored Witch Hizashi more times than I can count at the moment, aha...)

I feel like the start of this is small, but it's sweet and the following parts will be longer.

Work Text:

Shouta's known about the witch that had moved into town for a while now.

It's hard not to, when his favorite cafe is right across from the apartment building where the blonde witch lives, his balcony doors always wide open, and he can see magic shimmering from inside the apartment whenever he looks across the street. It's always fun watching the young man shout and cheer or dance when he seemed to get things right, and funny to watch when he yanked at blonde hair in frustration when things would go wrong. Either way, it's how Shouta spends his afternoons after classes.

Rumors and gossip of the witch fly around town soon after he first sees him casting a spell. “A witch moved to Tokyo! When was the last time anyone saw one in these parts?” People ask each other, excited at the prospect. With how crowded the metropolis is, the supernatural tends to stay away. Things like witchcraft, hauntings, and even vampire or werewolf attacks tend to stay in the country side.

(Shouta had always figured witches would all have dark hair and hunch over bubbling cauldrons, like the Halloween stories like to tell.

The first time that he'd ever actually interacted with him, though, was when a spell backfired near horrifically and he had to save the young man's life. He wound up floating out through his open window and if it weren't for Shouta's quick thinking and a handily placed coil of rope he would have floated off into the sky. The blonde witch had laughed the whole while, completely unconcerned even as bystanders screamed and pointed in fear for his life, though he took the helping hand happily.

He would have come down eventually, Hizashi – Yamada Hizashi, the witch's name – reassures Shouta cheerfully as they sit in his apartment. They're laying on the couch and the ceiling respectively so they don't have to crane their heads to look at each other, Shouta insisting that he should stay in case there's any chance Hizashi may float off again. He is, though, interested to see how it really is like gravity has been reversed completely.

"And that's why you floated out the window?" He finds himself asking dryly

Hizashi grins down at him. "It's more like falling. I fell out the window – gravity was pulling me down, but since there's no ground in the sky...." Hizashi shrugs.

Shouta squints up at him. “You seem far too comfortable for someone who just nearly sent themselves into space.”

That only makes Hizashi laugh. "Like I said, I would have come down eventually as the spell wore off. I keep a broom in my pocket for such occasions...” Hizashi's hands still where they've been patting said pockets. “Oh.”

“What?”

The blonde laughs, somewhat sheepishly. "I may have forgotten my broom."

"Glad I grabbed you out of the sky now?" Shouta asks dryly.

"Yes, thank you!"

It takes about an hour for the spell to wear off – all of a sudden. Shouta's glad he'd decided to get up for a cup of water, because Hizashi gives a startled yelp right before he crashes right into his couch cushions.

He turns, brow arched, and watches as the witch lays there for a moment groaning. "You good?"

"...I thought it would be gradual." With careful movements Hizashi pushes himself up until he can sit properly on the couch, reclined with his head back. "Ugh, why did it turn inward like that? Did I not center the spell correctly? Or maybe my balancing wasn't done correctly."

Shouta shakes his head and drinks from his fresh glass of water. "I have no clue. Magic isn't something I really know about."

"Well, what about math?" Hizashi raises his head to look up at him. His glasses are crooked on his face from his fall, green eyes big and wide and curious. "Math has a really big part of spell crafting. There's, like, a huge correlation between elements with numbers and shapes and stuff - did you know that the triangle represents the number three which represents fire? It also represents energy and expression and can also be represented by pineapples!"

Shouta just stares for a moment. "What... What the hell do pineapples have to do with – "

"I'm so glad you asked!" Hizashi is beaming, jumping up to his feet and bounding over to the side of the small efficiency that houses all of his magical notes and studies and equipment. "See, pineapples grow in warm climates, right? And their high acidic levels mean..."

Shouta has barely any idea what the hell the blonde is blabbering about excitedly. He feels stuck watching as the blonde flails and smiles and chatters in circles about magical theory and something to do with numerology? Is he allowed to leave or would that be rude?

At least the guy is kind of cute...
