Chapter 1: Masks and Gloves
Chapter Text
Atsushi didn’t like the idea of parties. I mean, he was alright with it, but if given the chance, he’d decline the offer to attend. But, when a mission involving infiltrating a party in disguise and Atsushi being assigned to it, he didn’t have pretty much of a choice.
Then again, the young man was happy to be given another job. This meant that the Agency trusted him and another chance to help. So, technically speaking, it wasn’t that bad, right? Being under disguise and infiltrating the party would be nice. After all, Kunikida put emphasis on the fact that he just had to observe and gather data, nothing more, nothing less. Meaning that he didn’t have to resort to violence or using his ability (which was another thing he wanted to prove; that he was equally as capable with or without his ability)
So, here he was, being briefed on his mission with Ranpo, Kunikida, and Yosano. He didn’t know why Yosano had to be there, but maybe she would be his partner in this one? He didn’t know.
“Alright kid. The party is set in three days. Basically, what we want you to collect is information regarding the stolen necklace in the Yokohama Museum. As of now, the original necklace is nowhere to be found, so they put a fake one in the museum to cease panic. However, that necklace alone is a powerful entity. You could say that it maintains peace in the city. I will not put it into detail, but it is crucial that we get it back. You understand?”
Kunikida paused, checking to see if Atsushi was listening. The kid was listening— taking notes too, actually. Ranpo was dozing off and Yosano was just nodding. Atsushi hummed in response, a sign for the older man to continue.
“What we do know right now is that it is currently in the hands of an ability user. That is what Ranpo was able to deduct, given the very few information we were given. I believe that they will auction it off, so that’s what I want you to dig into. Who are involved in the said auction and— as much as possible, identify the whereabouts of the necklace. If you are able to get more, then please do so.”
Atsushi nodded as Ranpo gave him the invitation to the party. It was wrapped in a scroll, with a ribbon tying it. Atsushi opened it, ‘Masquerade Ball at the Ruby Palace’ he read.
“This must be a very grand party, no?” Yosano suddenly said out of the blue, taking the invitation from his hands.
"It is, actually. The richest of the rich will attend. It’ll be like a grand ball straight out of a ‘fairy tale’.” Kunikida replied.
Atsushi turned to Yosano, a smile in his face. “I hope we enjoy this party together, Yosano-san! It’s my first time partnering up with you.” He smiled to himself. Maybe this job won’t be so bad with Yosano-san around, given the fact that she won’t use abilities on this one (hopefully)
The doctor laughed. “What? Me? Atsushi, I’d love to partner up with you but sweetie.. I’m afraid that’s not why I’m here.” She held the weretiger’s hand on her own, giving him the invitation back. She nudged Ranpo and he sat up.
After a few seconds, he cleared his throat. “Yes, Atsushi! Yosano isn’t here to be your partner. She’s here to help you get ready for the party, actually.” He said with a smile curling up his lips.
Atsushi looked at both men suspiciously.
Kunikida just shrugged, “Don’t blame me for what happens next, kid. It was Ranpo’s plan.”
Atsushi raised his eyebrows, curious as ever.
“What do you mean? I don’t need to look grand. I’ll just throw on a mask and a tux, no biggie.” He said reassuringly.
The last thing he wanted was to look grand, after all. He’d just like to blend in with the crowd. And besides, he’d be forever guilty if they decide to buy him an expensive costume for a one-night mission. There was an awkward silence in the room for a second or two, until Ranpo decided to break the tension.
“You’ll be going to the party as a girl , Atsushi.” Ranpo said casually.
Atsushi’s eyes widened as he looked at the detective. He didn’t hear it right… right? But, Ranpo wouldn’t joke around about a mission. Or was he? Maybe it was supposed to be ‘you’ll be going with a girl’ but it couldn’t possibly be. His senses were as sharp as a tiger so… what the fuck? He took a deep breath,
“ W-what? Kunikida-san?” The younger man looked at Kunikida with a face of disbelief. Yosano was watching the scene unfold, secretly laughing in her head.
"It is what it is, kid. Ranpo came up with this plan, and I also think it was the safest and more realistic way to get to our goal.” He said seriously.
Atsushi faced the ground and gulped. “May I ask, why?” He asked, trying not to show them the hint of nervousness in his voice.
Why him? Kyouka was there. She’d be way more capable than him. Not to mention, there was also Yosano, who would blend right in to the aristrocratic atmosphere of the party with her aura. Tons of thoughts flooded to his mind, yet he couldn’t bare to tell them all. This was a lot to take in. But his thoughts came to a halt when Ranpo stood up and put on his glasses.
“You see, Atsushi, Kyouka would be a nice candidate. But, her ability, Demon Snow, is known to plenty of people in the said party because of her previous assassination missions. If we put her there, there would be a chance that she’d get exposed quickly, leading to the failure of our mission.” He paused, looking to see if Atsushi was processing his words.
"Yosano is needed here at the office, since she plays a vital role in assisting those injured….. and also because she’s too wild to go on this mission.” Ranpo said as a joke, causing Yosano to slap the back of his head.
“Oy, shuttup! I’d be perfect for this mission but I’d like to see our cute little tiger in a gown!”
What? Atsushi blushed at Yosano’s statement, leading him to look down at his lap.
“Also, Atsushi, Ranpo forgot to mention but..” Kunikida started, causing Atsushi to get serious yet again. “The said ability user who has the necklace has a certain type— which you, coincidentally fit the description. This can be a great advantage for us, too.”
“P-please elaborate more with me ‘fitting in to the certain type’..” Atsushi shyly said.
He didn’t really find himself attractive. Although, people did say he had a cute face and a golden smile… But what could they mean when they said that he fit right in to the suspect’s type? Yosano put a hand on his shoulder, realizing that this was a lot to take in for the kid.
“Of course. Rumors say that this guy is into females about your height, age, and eye color, that’s all we know.” Ranpo said with a smile.
Atsushi slowly nodded and started to slowly understand his situation.
"And.. I have three days to fully learn all of the basic stuff on how to be a girl, right?”
Kunikida nodded, a proud smile appearing on his face.
“Yep. Listen, Atsushi..” he started, “I know this mission is a fresh breath of air for you, but remember that it is all just a disguise, okay? This doesn’t make you less of a guy. Remember that, alright? I’m glad you accepted this mission wholeheartedly and I’m proud.”
“Thank you, Kunikida-san. It means a lot. I promise I won’t disappoint all of you.” He said proudly.
Ranpo took off his glasses, “Alright, let’s get your measurements for the gown.”
Atsushi jumped in surprise. “R-right now?!”
"Of course! The party’s in three days, Atsushi. Lucky for you, we got a tailor who can finish the job in a day so stand up, kiddo!”
/////
For the past two days, Yosano has taught her all the ethics to being a woman. It wasn’t that bad, actually (at least for Atsushi) he just had to be graceful in everything he did. Yosano taught her all the basic table etiquette in a high noble society and the fancy stuff. She taught him how to make his voice girly, and how to fix his posture.
Atsushi even thought it was fun and he enjoyed learning from Yosano. Afterwards, Ranpo gave him his fake identity.
His identity was Amelia Winford, a foreign guest from England with a Japanese blood. She’s 18 years old, and the daughter of an owner of some famous tea company in England. Ranpo even made all of it look legit; and Atsushi was amazed. He read the report again and again, trying to memorize Amelia’s backstory, so that if ever there were a small talk, he— I mean, she’d know what to say. His reading was stopped when Kunikida called for his attention.
“Atsushi, your gown is here. Put it on, along with the wig and make-up.” The man declared as he brought out an ocean blue ball gown. It was puffy (like the usual gown) and Atsushi couldn’t help but notice that it looked a lot like Cinderella’s gown in the live version remake. Except for the fact it it had a darker color and way more glitters as it went down.
"Let’s consider this as the general practice for tomorrow’s event, kid.” Kunikida reminded Atsushi. Yosano nodded and helped him get to his gown.
A few moments after, Yosano finally finished Atsushi’s transformation and he came out as Amelia Winford. All was in shock because what the fuck, Atsushi was gorgeous. He looked like a real girl— a beautiful one.
No one would’ve guessed that Amelia was actually a fake identity and that she (he) was actually a guy. Atsushi’s short hair was replaced with a wig (the same color as his original hair) and his hair was tied up in a bun, along with a few bangs loose to give it style. Yosano put some light make-up on Atsushi, just enough to make his features more girl-like and it was safe to say that she did an excellent job. Atsushi’s chest had some fake boobs, but the make-up hid it well enough that it looked legit.
Lucky for them, Atsushi wasn’t all that muscular— slim, if you’d say, so the gown revealed his curves. It was as if Amelia Winford was real. At this point, everyone inside the room (Yosano, Ranpo, and Kunikida) was staring at him. The room was covered in silence as they were in awe at what was in front of them.
“So… What do you think?” Atsushi asked, using his girl voice.
Kunikida cleared his throat and approached Atsushi. “You look marvelous, Atsushi.”
He got something out of his pocket; it was a white choker. “This is to hide your Adam’s apple,” he said as he put it around Atsushi’s neck.
He also got out a pair of earrings, “and this’ll be our connection to you. We can hear everything, but we can’t talk to you with it. But that’s okay, I trust that you know what to do without instruction.”
Kunikida put it in Atsushi’s ear (a sensitive spot for him) and he couldn’t help but blush. “T-thank you, Kunikida-san.”
“The both of you look so cute!” Yosano squealed. Ranpo nodded as Kunikida finished his task, blushing but brushing off quickly.
"Nonsense, I was just informing Atsushi of his accessories. Don’t get the wrong idea.”
Ranpo smirked and started, “He’s right, Yosano. Besides.. Kunikida isn’t Atsushi’s escort tomorrow, right?”
Kunikida nodded and Atsushi was caught by surprise.
“I’m supposed to have an escort?!” He asked, suddenly wondering why they didn’t tell this any earlier.
"Of course, Atsushi. We can’t let you wander off alone! I’d get mad at Ranpo and Kunikida if something were to happen to you, so we decided this for safety precautions.” Yosano declared.
This just led Atsushi to more questions.
“Then, who is it? I’m assuming it’d be Tanazaki, since Naomi isn’t around and he isn’t doing much right now.”
“Nope! It’s Dazai, kiddo!” Ranpo exclaimed with a smile.
WHAT?! “D-Dazai-san?!” “Dazai?!” Three voices shouted at once, one being Atsushi’s and the other two being Yosano and Kunikida.
“You didn’t know about this?!” Yusano got up from her seat and faced Kunikida.
"I know that Atsushi needed an escort! I thought it was Kenji, not Dazai!”
Kunikida explained and faced Ranpo, “what has gotten into you?! Dazai would leave Atsushi alone and flirt with the rich older women!”
Yosano nodded in response, but Atsushi just sat down, and looked at himself in the mirror.
He looked pretty, he had to admit. He even fooled himself, he really looked like a girl. But what would Dazai think? I bet he’d make fun of him, being the goofy mentor he is.
Ranpo smirked, “calm down. I know what I’m doing. According to my ability, we will get the best results if he goes with Dazai; and he’ll be safe, no worries. Knowing how Dazai acts with him,” he winked.
Kunikida just sighed and adjusted his glasses. He knew better than to argue with Ranpo anyway.
“Very well. But where is Dazai anyway? I doubt he even knows of this mission.”
"He does, actually. He’s been so busy trying to find the right outfit yesterday but today, I dunno where he is.” Ranpo reassured.
Yosano approached Atsushi and wrapped an arm around him protectively, “Dazai will be his escort, right? Like a bodyguard or something?”
The detective shook his head, “he’ll go in as Amelia’s fiancé.” At this, Yosano stared at Ranpo in surprise.
Atsushi was still at disbelief, how can he nail that off? H-him, acting lovey dovey with his mentor? Imagine how awkward that would be! And the fact that he remembered Dazai saying that he doesn’t have such taste in men. Oh gosh, he must be so disgusted that he won’t show up today or tomorrow.
Before Kunikida could even protest, Ranpo explained.
"We need to convince everyone that Dazai’s a rich guy that’s willing to buy his fiancé the necklace. Also, I heard that our top suspect of the necklace thief gets jealous easily so…” he shrugged, not explaining any further.
Atsushi gulped and shook aside his thoughts. How was he gonna pull this off? This was his first mission in disguise and he was going in as a girl. God, how hard would that be? He sighed to himself,
"Where is Dazai-san? I want to practice with him.”
The other three shrugged. “It’s alright, Atsushi. He can pull it off; knowing him. Here’s his fake identity.”
Ranpo slid over a folder. Yosano eyed it suspiciously, “so his name here is ‘Charles Wilson’ and he’s 23— known for being rich and a lady’s man but would basically do anything for his fiancé…” she paused and took a long look at Atsushi.
“I mean, I wouldn’t blame him. His fiancé’s beautiful; no wonder he’d do anything for her.” She joked and Atsushi blushed.
How will I be able to pull this off? Atsushi thought to himself, and looked at himself once more.
/////
The day ended quickly, with Yosano finally teaching her how to actually act like a woman who’s in love. It wasn’t easy, he had to admit, but Yosano managed to do it successfully.
Throughout the said day, Dazai didn’t bother to show up, not even once. Talk about being responsible, Atsushi thought. They could’ve at least practiced their lines and familiarise themselves with each other as lovers— not that Atsushi was interested in it! He was just doing this for the mission and as professionals (he’d like to put emphasis on that) But with no luck, Dazai didn’t show up. Kunikida reassured him, however, that Dazai wouldn’t bail on the mission the following day though. So, to say the least, Atsushi was relieved.
Fast forward, it was already the day of the party. It was 1 PM in the afternoon and they were currently getting ready in the Agency’s extra room. With Yosano helping him out and Kunikida briefing him once more of his goals and identity in his mission. An hour or two later, Yosano finished fixing Atsushi but this time, he had more make-up.
"You’re so pretty, Atsushi! I’m so proud.” The doctor hugged the life out of him.
He looked once again in the mirror, realizing how it was true. He didn’t look like himself but there was a sense of familiarity. His features remained the same and all but the hair, the make-up the gown— everything, made him look different. They all suited Amelia’s description and could fool anyone.
“Remember kid, from now, use your girly voice. Let’s try to practice your identity with the Agency,” Kunikida said, offering a hand to Atsushi’s gloved hands.
The gloves were white, reaching up to his elbow. This was to hide his bruised fingers. Atsushi gladly took the hand and nodded. He remembered that no one— except Yosano, Kunikida, Ranpo, Dazai, and the President— knew of the mission. So, this was a somewhat trial in his identity as Amelia.
They exited the room, Atsushi’s heels could be heard as they took their footsteps to the main office. Kunikida opened the door and cleared his throat, causing everyone in the room to stop what they were doing.
“As you all know, we have a guest. Her name is Amelia Winford, and we are in charge of being her body guards for the party, as her father ordered us to do so.” He gestured Atsushi to enter, his gloved hands with his.
“Hi, I’m Amelia and it’s an honor to be with you today,” he said in English, not hinting a Japanese accent.
It was straight, like he really was from England. Everyone was shocked. Kenji was blushing like crazy; Tanizaki couldn’t stop staring because god, she’s gorgeous. Kyouka was in awe with the elegance their visitor had; she was the definition of grace and poise. Ranpo didn’t seem to mind, just munching off a few snacks. But, in short, everyone was convinced and mesmerised by the lady in front of them.
Kyouka approached the lady first and blushed, “Miss, are you a princess?” she asked innocently Kunikida looked away, knowing damn well everyone was convinced.
Atsushi couldn’t help but smile. There was a comfortable silence, they were just staring at their guest and Atsushi couldn’t help but blush. Before Atsushi could reply, the silence was disturbed when the closet door in the far back of the room opened.
Dazai exited the closet door and appeared in front of everyone. He was wearing a white vest, along with his pants. A half of his hair was slid back, giving him a whole new look. His bandages were gone and he looked heavenly, like an angel with his white outfit (basically what he was wearing when he was at Dead Apple)
“About time the prince arrived!” Ranpo exclaimed. Atsushi looked at Dazai and wow— he was handsome.
He looked like a model with his outfit and god, he couldn’t believe that his mentor could be any more attractive than he was before. Dazai ignored the stares from the other members and slowly approached ‘Amelia’, a smirk slowly creeping up on his face. He kneeled down with one leg, and the other supporting him. He took the gloved hands and placed a kiss on it.
“My princess, I’ve been waiting for you.” He said lovingly as he looked up at a very much blushing (and he hate to admit it, but he looked beautiful) Atsushi.
The whole agency was shocked; Kunikida’s mouth hung open at the scene in front of him. Kyouka was trying to hide her blushing, but she couldn’t. Yosano and Ranpo shared a glance and smiled. Meanwhile, Tanizaki and Kenji was just staring at disbelief.
“Uhm… I…” Atsushi looked away, a hint of shyness in his voice.
What was he supposed to say, anyway? He should’ve practiced more. And how the hell could he focus when Dazai looked that good? His thoughts were stopped when a he felt a hand underneath his chin. Dazai’s hand slowly moved Atsushi’s face for him to see.
“Now, don’t be shy… after all, you are my fiancé, darling.” He slid a ring to Atsushi’s finger and got up from his position, moving to Atsushi’s side and putting a hand on his waist.
He kissed the top of his head, earning a shocked look from almost all of the members (except Ranpo. If anything, he was glad that Dazai and Atsushi were playing the part very well)
Kenji got up from his seat and stood at the table.
“You’re engaged, Dazai-san?! And to her?!” He asked. Tanizaki nodded and closed his laptop,
“Since when? And why didn’t you tell us?!” he asked, a hint of jealousy in his voice.
Dazai chuckled and pulled Atsushi closer.
“Of course I’m engaged. Isn’t that right, Atsushi-kun? ” He looked at Atsushi, only to be met with a cute stare from the younger man.
From this perspective, he could very much see how Yosano really fixed Atsushi’s face to be like a girl’s. The make-up was on point, too. No wonder why the whole Agency was fooled to thinking that he was a girl.
But it was still Atsushi, underneath that disguise. Dazai knew very well; those eyes spoke to him. Like he could just be lost. He could stare at those eyes forever. While they were having a moment, the whole agency went mad.
“That’s Atsushi?!” “HA?” A series of questions filled the room.
This is gonna be a long day. Atsushi thought to himself.
/////
It was now 6:30 PM, and it took an hour and a half to get to the venue. The party, however, was starting in 30 minutes. But, Ranpo insisted that they entered late.
“You know, like a grand entrance of some sort.” He explained earlier.
It took a whole hour just to explain to the other members that it was really Atsushi underneath the disguise. A lot of questions on how was he able to walk in those heels, or what it feels to be in a gown. Atsushi answered all of them honestly, delighted that they were curious.
But, all things come to an end. They needed to get to the venue now if they wanted to continue on to their mission. Atsushi waved goodbye and went to the car.
Dazai was already inside. Handsome as ever, Atsushi thought to himself. Quickly slapping himself mentally for thinking such thoughts. This was his mentor, for god’s sake.
He went inside the black car; it was a fancy one. One of those that had a divider for the driver and the passengers at the back. The driver was someone Atsushi didn’t know. Kunikida said that the driver wasn’t supposed to be someone from the agency, so they just hired a trusted driver from a random company the President knew.
Atsushi entered the car and the drive started. There was a comfortable silence, Atsushi dozing off and looking at the city views. Dazai reading a book.
But, in less than five minutes into the drive, Dazai said to the driver, “Could you put up the divider?” The driver nodded, pressing the button. The divider slowly hid the other side, leaving Atsushi and Dazai.
“D-Dazai-san… about the mission, uh—“
“Don’t be so nervous, Atsushi-kun,” the older man replied, slowly moving to Atsushi’s side. He placed a hand on Atsushi’s shoulder.
"You seem scared. I won’t bite, Atsushi.” He teased, Atsushi flinched away.
“I’m not scared! I’m just… err, nervous, Dazai-san.” He replied truthfully. “This is my first mission in disguise and I have to go in as a girl— and not to mention, as your fiancé…” he mumbled off, receiving a smirk from Dazai.
“Oh come on, it isn’t that bad, right? Me being your rich overprotective fiancé,” He exclaimed. “A million girls would pay just to be in your position right now, Atsushi-kun~”
Was that supposed to be a reassurance or more pressure for him? He didn’t know. He sighed to himself, putting a head on Dazai’s shoulder.
"I dunno… but, it’s just that.. can we really pull this off? I never had a girlfriend so I don’t know how to act with my lover. And you— ugh, you didn’t even bother to show up in the days before to practi—“ he was cut off when Dazai put a hand on his mouth and faced him face to face, real close.
“It’ll be a piece of cake, trust me, darling.” He said casually, slowly getting closer to the younger man. “Just follow my lead, alright? I’ll take care of you. After all, you are my fiancé whom I love very much,” he said as he kissed his hand that was covering Atsushi’s mouth.
Atsushi was taken aback, but he couldn’t push him away. A few seconds into the ‘kiss’ (if you could call it that) the driver declared that they were already near the venue. Atsushi could’ve swore that they were just at the Agency a minute ago?
Time flies so fast, he thought. Dazai pulled away, knowing damn well that he left Atsushi flustered to the core. He was silent, he didn’t believe that happened. Was Dazai joking around with him? Because if he was, he was doing a great job
“Remember to act your part, alright? And,” Dazai stopped and caressed Atsushi’s cheek, “This is just a mission. Whatever happens there, happens as Amelia and Charles.”
Atsushi nodded eagerly because of course he knew that; it was just a mission. No strings attached. He should know this but…
"Also, I advise you to just picture me as your fiancé, not as your mentor. Forget our true personas for this night, and look at me as the love of your life. Will you do that for me, my dear Amelia?”
Atsushi then realized— of course, that was a technique! He could nail this mission with just that advice. He needed to forget everything he had earlier. For now, he was Amelia and Daza— I mean, Charles was his love. Just play your part, Atsushi.
“Y-yes, of course, Charles.” He said shyly as the car stopped.
The driver slowly got the divider down and Dazai handed him a beautiful blue mask, which color coordinated with his outfit and Dazai’s. There was a hint of white, making it match with his partner. The mask only covered his eyes and same with Dazai’s. He slipped on the masks, taking a deep breath. He looked at Dazai, seeing that he too had his mask on.
“You ready, sweets?” Dazai’s voiced changed— it was the same, yes, but there was a hint of more charm and flirty vibe in this one. The driver went outside to open the door. His partner went out first, offering a hand for Atsushi.
Atsushi cleared his throat and took Dazai’s hand with his gloved one. “Ready as I’ll ever be,” he exited the car and stood outside the palace-like place.

Chapter Text
The Ruby Palace was literally a palace itself. It looked like someone plucked out a palace from a story book and put it there because holy shit, was it huge. Before you could enter the main door, you had to go up some stairs, where knights were aligned in both corners. Luckily, the stairs weren’t that high, so Atsushi could manage in the heels. Besides, Dazai said that he’d gladly carry him all the way up the stairs, but Atsushi shook off the idea quickly. Dazai just held his hand and assisted him in going up, like a gentleman he is. As expected, they could hear the orchestra from outside the castle, so the party has already started. They finally reached the top of the stairs to see a fountain and a huge door, where two knights reside.
The couple walked to the entrance. “Don’t open it yet, fellas” Dazai reminded the two guards in a bossy accent.
Atsushi turned to him and raised his eyebrows. “Was there something you’d like to tell me, Charles?” he asked, with his Amelia voice.
When he spoke, he noticed that the two guards turned to him with admirable eyes. They were clearly attracted to the young lady in front of them, but Dazai let out a dark aura, causing both of the guards to stiffen up. He turned to Atsushi, putting a hand in his cheek and another to the younger man’s waist. He looked at Atsushi lovingly with his eyes, despite the mask covering half of his face.
“Stick to me whatever happens, alright? I don’t want to lose you.” He said.
So, this is the start of the mission, Atsushi thought to himself. His gloved hand touched the hand in his cheek softly. “Of course, Charles.”
Right then, Dazai moved his mouth closer to Atsushi’s ears. “You are mine , and mine alone. No other man can touch you, got it?” He said a bit strictly. It wasn’t loud, but it was loud enough for the guards to hear. Dazai’s tone was different from the usual, a bit scarier when he said that.
But Atsushi shrugged it off and nodded, putting his other hand to the man’s neck. Dazai pulled away and resumed to their previous position, with his hand holding Atsushi’s. He signaled the guard to open the door and they were greeted with a bright light.
They entered the room and fuck, Atsushi thought. They were the center of attention, literally . They were on the top of the two staircases that led down to where all the guests gathered. They were in the middle.. The two staircases were so high that they could see everyone and how they stared at the couple in front of them. Atsushi’s hand started shaking, only for Dazai to grip it tighter, as a sign of reassurance. The people stopped what they were doing and stared at them. Heck, even the music stopped.
What the fuck is going on? Atsushi cursed himself. Tons of thoughts were going inside his head. How will they go down without making a scene? And why did they stop? Were the doors to loud? Thank god they were wearing masks, or else he would’ve freaked out. Luckily, everyone was also wearing masks. He knew that arriving late was a bad idea.
Tons of thoughts circulated his head until a trumpet played, and a short man (that he didn’t quite notice) in the corner cleared his throat. “Presenting, Sir Charles Wilson with his betrothed, Miss Amelia Winford.” The short man declared, with a real loud voice, to add. The whole room could hear it. Dazai tapped Atsushi’s hand twice with his finger, meaning to bow. The couple bowed and the audience clapped. What the fuck? Was that supposed to happen? He thought to himself as he bowed with Dazai.
The music resumed as they went down the stairs, but Atsushi still felt their stares. Was it his dress? Was he overdressed? He glanced up the people, only to see that they were just wearing the same type of puffy gown as him. Maybe it was Dazai, attracting the attention of the women. He really did stand out. Most men were wearing black tuxedos, but Dazai’s were white. In fact, they were color coordinated with Atsushi’s outfit, which made them perfect.
As they reached the bottom of the stairs, they were greeted by a group of women around Dazai’s age. They’re very pretty, Atsushi thought silently. The ladies did some small talk, welcoming them with warm hands. “Sir Charles Wilson— why, I’ve heard that you are ever so the ladies’ man!” A lady with a pink puffy dress and blonde hair said. The lady intoduced herself as Charlotte. She was eyeing Dazai flirtatiously, which made Atsushi a bit conscious. “I, too heard the rumors! Despite not being able to see you before, I can see why they say so.” Another one chimed in, with a wink. Dazai chuckled, causing the group to laugh. Atsushi kept his hands to himself and faked a laugh, too.
“I’m afraid that those rumors were true but,” he paused and looked at Atsushi with loving eyes. He put an arm around his waist and pulled him close, “but ever since I met Miss Amelia, I never bothered to look for another woman again. She’s all I need,” Dazai sincerely said, enough to make the ladies swoon. Atsushi just blushed and looked away.
“Stop joking around, Charles..” he said quietly. The other girls giggled, but he could sense a hint of jealousy in their laughs. He made them swoon for him real quick.. Atsushi thought. Was this another ability Dazai had? Making all the ladies fall for him?
“I’m not joking, babe. You’re my princess.” All the girls smiled and started telling talking about how ‘Amelia’ was so lucky to have someone like ‘Charles’.
Their conversation was going well, until a hand landed on Charlotte’s shoulders. It was a man’s hand. The blonde turned around quickly and exclaimed, “Daddy!” she hugged the unknown man and pulled him close. The man was in his mid-40’s. Yet, he was still attractive. He was built fit, and you would think that he had a body of a 20 year old. But then, Atsushi realized that this was their target. He remembered clearly.
“His name is Watanabe Atlas, the owner of the famous Watanabe enterprises,” Kunikida explained. “He is known to being a playboy millionare, but he is a widow. He has a daughter around her 20’s and he spoils her very much. You, Atsushi, will be our bait to him. It seems that he’s into younger women with your appearance,” Atsushi remembered how Kunikida described the man. How was he supposed to pour out some information from him, anyway? Was he gonna seduct him, or some sort?
“This is my father, Watanabe Atlas! He made this party for me, right daddy?” Charlotte turned to him, a smile on her face. “Of course, Lottie. As my daughter said, I am Watanabe Atlas. It’s a pleasure to meet the both of you.” he bowed slightly to the couple.
Atsushi and Dazai bowed, too. “You too, Watanabe-san. I’m Charles Wilson and this is my fiancé, Amelia. We came straight to Japan from England upon receiving your invitation,” He explained and offered a hand to shake with the older man. He gladly accepted and they shared a formal handshake. “We are truly honored for your acceptance, Mr. Wilson, but please do call me Atlas.” Dazai nodded. Atlas turned his attention to Atsushi—er, Amelia. He bowed again. “An honor to meet you, sir.” Atsushi said sweetly. God, he didn’t know what to do.
“Lift your head, dear,” the older man declared. He slowly lifted his head up and realized that Atlas was right in front of him. He was a bit close than he expected. He could hear the guy’s breathing, for fuck’s sake. Atsushi glanced at the man in front of him, who was eyeing him weirdly.
She is just my type. Atlas thought silently. He looked at the young lady in front of him; she was gorgeous. Young, innocent, and obedient. He could see her with him. The man looked at Amelia’s eyes—which was something he could stare at forever. She’s perfect for me. He was about to put a hand on the girl’s shoulder, but he stopped himself. He knew that Wilson was protective over his fiancé. Instead, he just smiled. “You are quite blessed to have such a beautiful lady with you, Charles.” He complimented. But, underneath the mask, he was jealous.
Dazai smirked in secret. He could see in Atlas’ face that he was practically hungry for Atsushi. He smirked and pulled ‘Amelia’ close, his grip on his waist a bit tighter and a bit more possessive. “She is mine, after all.” Was all that Dazai had to stay. There was tension, everyone could feel it. But luckily, Charlotte decided to break it. “Why don’t you guys join me and daddy with his friends? I’m sure they’d like to meet you!” She exclaimed . The couple gladly accepted the offer, leaving the other ladies behind as Charlotte and Atlas led them to another side of the event.
It was a literal ballroom. There were some people dancing and some talking. It was safe to say that an easy 200 people were inside, but the place didn’t look full. This feels like the party of the century. Atsushi thought.
“You alright?” Dazai asked. This time though, Atsushi really did hear Dazai’s voice.
“Yeah, of course. Everything’s going smooth,” he reassured.
Dazai just pouted and whispered. “I saw how Atlas was staring at you, you’re doing an excellent job, Atsushi.”
Atsushi blushed and nodded. A few moments later, they arrived at Atlas’ group of friends. They were all around Atlas’ age, and (disturbingly) they all had young ladies with them, clinging onto their partners. The group initiated a bit of small talk, which Dazai handled smoothly.
I guess this was what his life was back at the Port Mafia , Atsushi thought. He bet it was full of grand parties and such. He was surprised that Dazai really did feel like he belonged here, to the noble society because in less than five minutes, they were already joking around and acting like real close friends.
Atsushi sometimes joined the conversation, but Dazai did most of the talking. It didn’t bother Atsushi much, really. He was just uncomfortable, because he could feel the stares of some men in the group. They could feel the flick of their tongues as they eyed Atsushi secretly.
But, Dazai noticed this. The whole time, his hands were holding Atsushi’s waist and he’d check up on him, making him feel protected. It wasn’t direct, but Dazai’s aura seemed dark when he felt some men eyeing him. He didn’t know how his mentor did it, but it caused the others to look away.
The night wasted away, and it was about an hour when someone mentioned the necklace. They were now sitting on a round table, having a few drinks. Atsushi excused himself to go to the bathroom, and Dazai insisted that he went with him. “Aw, how cute. You’re getting a bit too protective, aren’t ya Wilson?” A man from their table said and the group laughed. “She’ll be safe. Let Charlotte come with her,” Atlas ordered his daughter. Charlotte nodded and got up from her seat. They went to the bathroom together, with Charlotte leading.
“Oy, Atlas, aren’t ya planning on selling the famous Yokohama necklace next week?” A clearly drunk friend of his pointed out. Atlas stiffened a bit. This information was exclusive to his group of friends only. But, there was a hint of safeness that Atlas felt. He knew that Charles would be interested in the necklace, of course. He assumed that Charles would buy it for Amelia. So, there would be no harm in discussing the topic, right?
“Yes, I’ll be having an auction here, too. Next week Tuesday, to be exact.” He announced and turned to Charles.
“You interested in buying, Charles?”
Dazai chuckled, “how’d you know?”
“I can see it in your eyes, kid.” Atlas smirked, “you want to give it to Amelia, right?”
“Well, yeah. I asked for her hand in marriage but…” Dazai trailed off, leaving the group curious to his next sentence.
“But what?” A man asked, and drunk another glass. “I feel like giving her a ring isn’t enough. I want to give her something more; to make it up to her.”
“Trust me, Charles, when you get your hands on that necklace, you won’t regret it. So, what do you say?” Atlas asked.
It took him a few seconds to reply, pretending to think it over. “Very well, but please don’t tell her when she comes back, alright? I want to keep it a secret.” The men in their table nodded and continued on discussing the auction. Dazai adjusted his ring, where the microphone connecting to the Agency could be found. On the other side of it, Kunikida, along with a few other members were taking notes about the new information.
Meanwhile, in the bathroom, Atsushi was with Charlotte. He could feel the tension, he just knew it. At times like these, girls really didn’t have to go to the bathroom, they just had to powder their noses (Yosano said) so Atsushi knew what to do. He was staring at the mirror, fixing his hair a bit and adjusted his glove. He didn’t bother to talk to Charlotte, since it felt like she could kill him at a look. Women really are wild creatures, Atsushi thought to himself.
“He’s mine, you know,” Charlotte said suddenly.
Atsushi raised an eyebrow, “I’m sorry, what?” He asked, genuinely curious as to what she was talking about.
“Your boyfriend, Charles, he’s mine,” Oh, so that’s how it is.
“Why do you say that, hm? I got him wrapped around my finger , after all.” He faced her, raising his gloved hand up, only to reveal a ring.
Charlotte rolled his eyes. “He’s yours, for now. But I bet my daddy will find a way to snatch him away from you. Just you wait, Winford,” Charlotte sounded ridiculous right now. Atsushi could feel it, underneath the mask, he bet that she was raging. “Whatever you say,” he didn’t feel threatened, to say the least. It’s not like Charlotte would see ‘Charles’ again after this party. Charlotte exited the bathroom first, leaving Atsushi behind. “You hear that, Yosano-san?” He whispered to his earring, lightly laughing.
Back at the agency, they heard all of Charlotte’s conversation with Atsushi. “That’s my girl!” Yosano cheered as she heard Atsushi’s come back at the blonde. Kunikida lightly laughed, and Ranpo smirked to himself. This turn of events just made this more interesting. “Ranpo, at this rate, do you think it’ll be successful?” Kunikida asked. “Trust me, Kunikida, it’ll be more than successful.”
Brushing his thoughts aside, Atsushi looked at the mirror one more time. He knows that Yosano heard their conversation, and he knew that she’d be laughing. He fixed his hair and re-applied his lipstick (which he actually knows very well) He then headed back outside, only to be greeted with a slightly drunk Dazai leaning against the wall, with his eyes closed. Atsushi giggled. “Charles, wake up.” he tugged on Dazai’s coat softly enough to make the man wake up. “Oh, you’re here,” he said with a hint of comfort. He then hugged Atsushi carefully.
Dazai was making a scene, fuck’s sake. Dazai’s arms were wrapped around Atsushis waist, his face in the crook of Atsushi’s neck.
“Y-you’re making a scene…” he whispered softly as he hugged back, wrapping his gloved arms around his partner’s neck.
“I know, I just wanted to inform you that we have enough data to get back home,”
Atsushi pulled away his face from Dazai’s, a smile slowly appearing on his face. “Really?” “Really.” Dazai said and placed a kiss on Atsushi’s forehead, leaving the younger man to gulp nervously.
He could feel heat rise up his cheeks, “Dazai-san!” he scolded quietly enough for only them to hear. “It’s Charles, sweets.” He reminded and placed another kiss to his forehead. Dazai chuckled at seeing him blushing like a cute little bunny. He’d love to tease him again and again and look at his adorable reactions.
They didn’t notice, but they were making quite a scene. They were staring intently and thought to themselves, What a cute couple they are. They admired how the pretty young lady blushed at the man’s actions. Not to mention, the lady was gorgeous, it was obvious, despite her being in a mask. Her gray locks were in a bun, a few strands standing out to give it a messy look but something that suited her. And her gown was ravishing; it was the best among everyone else’s. Her actions were the complete definition of grace. too. How her gloved hands slid to the man’s neck. And their color coordinated outfits! The man was hella handsome, too. And tall. And how he brought himself with confidence and a hint of naughtiness. God, he was to die for. The ladies were swooning over him. But they couldn’t help but think how perfect for each other they were.
“Let’s go, Amelia,” Dazai declared and held Atsushi’s hands with his. As they were walking, they could feel everyone’s eyes staring. Dazai-san is really one to attract unwanted attention, huh. Atsushi sighed as Dazai paused, a few steps to the stairs leading to the exit.
“Why are you down, Amelia?” Dazai asked worriedly. He noticed that Atsushi was a bit unusual for the last few minutes.
“I feel like I didn’t do anything tonight…” he replied honestly.
Dazai laughed, “What? No! If anything, you were actually the reason why they gave the information so easily,”
“What?”
“Yeah,” Dazai started. “They brought the necklace discussion among themselves and said that it looked like I wanted to buy you the necklace,” he explained and Atsushi smiled, knowing that Ranpo’s plan worked. “They kept saying, ‘Buy it for her, Wilson. It suits her,’” He imitated, causing Atsushi to laugh. “They also said, ‘The necklace was made for her. It would suit her so much,’”
“So I guess I do make a pretty girl..” Atsushi looked away. You’re pretty even if you weren’t a girl, Dazai thought.
He was about to say it aloud when Atlas approached them. “Leaving so early, eh? The party hasn’t even started, Charles!”
“Oh?” Dazai asked, turning to face the older man. “Yeah, tell you what. We’re going to have a little dance, that waltz stuff,” he whispered to Dazai, “I suggest you stay. After all, you can’t go home from a party until you offer your girl to a dance, right?” he joked, a. hint of alcohol in his breath.
As much as the both of them wanted to go home, they couldn’t. Denying the host’s invitation to stay would be insulting. Atsushi sighed and nodded his head to Dazai. “Of course, Atlas. Go ahead, we’ll follow.” With that, Atlas left them alone and went to the band.
Dazai and Atsushi decided to blend with the guests. “After this, we’re gonna go, right Charles?” Atsushi asked. “Of course babe. Just one dance, then we’ll go.” The word ‘babe’ casually left Dazai’s mouth like he was used to calling Atsushi like that. Atsushi facepalmed at his thoughts, complaining to himself at how cheesy he was. And wait… did they say dance? Yosano didn’t teach him how to dance. Fuck…
Atsushi tugged on Dazai’s coat again, “What?” Dazai faced him. “I don’t know how to dance,” “Just follow my lead. I got you all the way,” Dazai said with a reassuring voice, no jokes or lies. He knew that Atsushi didn’t know how to dance and it was probably his first time.
Dazai felt a bit honored to be Atsushi’s first. “I’ll make it your best first dance,” he whispered to him.
Atlas slowly went to the band, getting the microphone and tapping it a few times before speaking. “Well, folks, it’s that time of night. I’d like to ask each gentleman to ask a lady he accompanied this evening to dance the King and Queen’s Waltz,” he declared and raised a glass, leaving the stage and signaling the band to start the music.
“Shall we?” Dazai asked formally, offering a hand to Atsushi. Atsushi gladly accepted, a bit of nervousness. This was his first time doing the waltz (well, first time in dancing, actually) and he was gonna do it in front of plenty of people.
The music started, the piano playing. The singer walked up to the stage again with the microphone. “Don’t be nervous, alright?” Dazai assured once again and Atsushi just hoped for the best. They moved to the site where the participating couples were and Dazai and walked to the middle.
The singer started, “You’re in my arms… and all the world is gone…the music playing on for only two..” He sang beautifully as the waltz commenced.
The couple wasn’t starting to dance, but the others were already dancing. They were the middle of attention now. But none of them seemed to notice. They stared at each other for a moment, realizing how romantic the situation were. “You ready?” Dazai asked. “Ready.”
“A life goes by… “ That’s where they started to dance. “Romantic dreams must die… so I bid mine goodbye and never knew…” Dazai led Atsushi slowly, enough for him to familiarise. It was a bit hard for the younger man but a few seconds into the song, Atsushi got the pattern. Easier than I thought it would be, he thought. Afterwards, Dazai slowly twirled him around, syncing in with the lyrics “All that I want is… to hold you..” As their hands met. The singer continued, and they danced on.”So close…”
But on the other side of the ballroom, Charlotte was throwing death glares as she danced with his partner. Stupid Amelia! Having Charles all to herself, that should be me! She thought and gritted her teeth.
However, Atsushi was enjoying the dance. Dazai was staring at him with a sincere smile in his face. He figured that he was also enjoying, too. If only he could freeze time because god, this moment was perfect. It felt like he was meant to be in Dazai’s arms. They were at the middle of the dance floor now. It was as if the people made a big circle for them to be at the center.
“Now you’re… beside me… and look how far we’ve come..” This wasn’t the singer, but Dazai. He sang along softly enough for Atsushi to hear. Atsushi’s heart was beating so fast now. What was this feeling? Did Dazai feel it, too? Atsushi looked at Dazai’s lips and at his eyes again. He was genuinely singing and Atsushi just lost it. He slowly closed the distance between him and Dazai, hugged him for a second or two before pulling away. “So far…. we are… so close…” The band started playing the instrumental part of the song and they just danced again all over the circle.
They danced gracefully, their moves syncing to every beat. Dazai twirling him around and Atsushi smiling. Dazai lifted Atsushi up quickly for a bit of some attention. The moment itself was magical, like a fairy tale. It was perfect. Everyone’s eyes were on them but they felt like they were the only ones in the room. Not to mention, the spotlight was following them as they danced.
"They're looking at you.." Atsushi softly said, his eyes not leaving Dazai's as he twirled him again. But it was true, everyone was looking at their waltz with amazed eyes.
Dazai smiled at Atsushi. "Believe me, they're all looking at you."
If only they could stop time. … If only they could be their true selves during this dance.. If only….but….
Just right on time after the instrumental part, they stopped dancing. “Oh how could I face… the faceless days.. if I should lose you now…”
“Charles, a word?” They were interrupted when there was a tap on Dazai’s shoulders. It was Atlas. Dazai’s grip on Atsushi’s hand tightened. The song was still playing. “We’re so close to reaching that famous happy ending… almost believing… this one’s not pretend…”
Dazai nodded. “Of course, Atlas. Let me just talk to Amelia for a minute,” he replied. Atlas nodded understandingly.
Were they found out? What happened? Did Atlas have suspicions? Atsushi was nervous now. But Dazai led him outside, to the. balcony in the corner. They were the only ones outside, but Atlas was waiting along with his men near the entrance of the balcony but they gave the couple enough space to chat. “Have we been found out?” Atsushi asked, a bit worried.
“No, I think it’s because of Charlotte.”“What?!” “I think he’ll forcibly break off our engagement for his daughter,”
Atsushi sighed in relief. Nothing Dazai couldn’t handle. “But I am kinda nervous too. He has some of his men with him.” Dazai confessed. They looked back at the party, and saw Atlas.
“Should we call the Agency?” “They already know what to do. They can hear us, after all.” Dazai assured. Atsushi just nodded carefully, trying to process the situation.
“Don’t be nervous. I’ll be alright; I’ll have the driver pick you up and you can go to the Agency.”
“I don't like it, Dazai-san. What about the party?"
“We can finish our waltz later, alright? The meeting will be short."
He teased, but Atsushi was very much nervous.
"I... I don't like it, Dazai."
Dazai sighed, "Me too. But we don't have much of a choice, do we?"
"I'd rather come with you."
"Believe me, I'd rather have you by my side." He held Atsushi's arms tightly, "but I'll be back shortly."
Atsushi gulped, "W-we're not alone.." he was talking about the men and Atlas, waiting for Dazai just outside the balcony.
"I know, that's why I need to kiss you," Dazai whispered to Atsushi's ear.
“W-what?”
"For the part.. We need to convince them that we’re in love..” he explained carefully, “And a farewell kiss wouldn’t hurt anyone, right?” Dazai was right. But… this was Atsushi’s first kiss..
“A-alright,”
“Good boy, now part your lips a little. Pretend that we’ve always been doing this.” The older man was now face to face with him. Atsushi gulped and parted his lips, closing his eyes.
He was met with soft lips. The kiss was sweet; something he always wanted. Dazai held Atsushi close and wrapped an arm around his waist and pulled him close. By that time, Atsushi was now kissing back, his hands in Dazai’s hair. He opened his eyes a bit, seeing Dazai's eyes were also closed too. He parted his lips to breathe and pulled away lightly, only to be greeted with another rough kiss by Dazai. This is too good to be true… Atsushi thought.
Dazai pulled away and a smirked appeared in his face. “I didn’t know you were such a good kisser, Atsushi-kun!”
“It was my first time!”
“Really?”
Atsushi looked up at Dazai. His heart was beating fast again. He hated this feeling, specially to his mentor. Only then, he realized that there was a lipstick mark near Dazai’s lips. Oh god, did he do that? How embarassing. He still couldn’t believe that he kissed Dazai back just a few seconds ago.“Wait.. Dazai-san.. there’s a stain,” he brought up his white gloves, only to be stopped by Dazai.
"It’s alright.”
And it hit Atsushi.Of course it was, they were playing pretend. “Oh yeah, we need to convince them, right?”
“I just don’t want you to stain your pretty gloves, darling. He kissed Atsushi’s gloves and took off his white coat, placing it in Atsushi’s small figure. It looked oversize, but Dazai didn’t seem to mind. “I’ll be going now, Amelia I love you.” Dazai smiled, leaving Atsushi to touch his lips again.

Chapter Text
Dazai left Atsushi at the balcony. Before he approached Atlas, he took one last look at his partner for the night. Atsushi clung to Dazai’s coat tightly and another hand was touching his lips. He knew that he left Atsushi flustered, but he couldn’t stop himself. The kiss was better than expected and maybe he’d like to do it again. Casting his thoughts aside, he went to Atlas, along with his men.
The group went inside the party, with Atlas on Dazai’s side. Dazai noticed that it was already 11 PM, but people still weren’t leaving. The party was still lively as ever, just how they were earlier when they first entered. “Atlas, why aren’t the people leaving?” he asked.
“Oh, there’s a bit of a surprise event at midnight.” The man replied honestly, leaving Dazai to wonder.
He was sure as hell that he did a genuinely good job at hiding his identity. And Atsushi did a good job, too. He knew to himself that Atlas, along with everyone else, was convinced that Charles and Amelia were true persons. So, what was there to worry about? Ranpo really did give his time and effort to make everything look legit, after all. He even made a ‘fake’ company famous enough that Dazai could easily small talk with the owners of other companies too.
They came to a stop when Atlas and him were standing in front of a big door. “Let’s head inside, shall we?”Dazai raised an eyebrow. He still didn’t know what this guy’s abilities were, but no matter. It would be a piece of cake just to use his ability to stop Atlas. So, Dazai just nodded. Atlas opened the door, with Dazai following.
////
It has been an hour since Dazai left. Atsushi was now inside the party once again, chatting with the ladies he first met earlier. He checked the time, ’11:45’ the big clock read on the top of the room. Where the hell is Dazai? He asked himself, a bit concerned.
“Oh my, Miss Amelia. Your skin is as clear as ever! Tell us, what’s your secret?” Elizabeth, a girl with rich brown hair, complimented. They’ve been talking for awhile now and Atsushi managed to blend right in with the group. The girls were actually very nice and genuine with their way of talking. No one could’ve guessed it though, because at first glance they looked like snobby rich people. But, after a bit of talk, they were talking like real friends.
“Thank you, Miss Elizabeth,’ he started. He actually didn’t know why his skin was clear, but it was worth a try to answer. “I suppose it’s because I exercise daily? I read from an article that exercise can help your skin get healthier.” He said truthfully, receiving a bunch of startled gasps from the girls. Atsushi just laughed lightly and tugged on Dazai’s coat to his shoulders. (it was huge, just a couple of inches and it could reach the bottom of his gown)
“E-exercise everyday? How can you do that?” Another chimed in. “I did it once, and I stopped at planking!” She said and the whole group laughed.
Hera, another girl whom Atsushi got relatively close with, put an arm around his shoulder and smiled. “Come on, you guys! Don’t you know?”Atsushi raised an eyebrow, “What?” The other girls were wondering too. Hera laughed again and started, “Her skin’s so clear because she’s in love!” She joked, a genuine one. And the others laughed along as well. They weren’t jealous of ‘Amelia’, no— it was far from that. They were more than supportive with the couple. They confessed that Charlotte was the only jealous one out of their group. Atsushi could remember their conversation clearly.
“Us? Jealous? Sweetie, no!” Elizabeth assured. “If anything, I’m jealous of Charles.”“H-huh?”
“He has such a pretty girlfriend…” Elizabeth pouted, “I would’ve gotten you first, but.. you’re engaged already so..”
“You’re just bitter cause you got rejected by a girl yesterday, Lizzie!” One of the girls from the group teased.
And then it hit Atsushi. Oh, they’re into girls. Not that Atsushi was complaining, he was fine with that. Love is love, after all. So, they then reassured him that Charlotte was the only thirsting over Charles.
Back to the present time, the group was just laughing and joking around. They were still talking about boys, and how shitty they were. Atsushi throwing in a couple of jokes, too. As they sat at their table, Atsushi took another bite of the cake. “Oh my gosh, nine more minutes until midnight!” Hera exclaimed.
“I’m so excited, who could the King and Queen be?” One of them questioned.
Elizabeth rolled her eyes, “Why not make it Queen and Queen? I’d gladly take Amelia as my queen, right Amelia?”
Atsushi stopped chewing his cake and giggled cutely, causing Elizabeth to blush. The group was still talking about that ‘midnight event’, but Atsushi was clueless. What were they talking about? Were there going to be new guests— a literal king and queen, making this party more prone to danger? Would he have to result to using his ability? And why didn’t Dazai tell him this earlier? God, he was over thinking again.
“I hate to admit it, but I think it’s Charles and Amelia. I mean, have you seen their dance earlier?” One girl exclaimed, snapping Atsushi from his thoughts.
Atsushi shook his head, “Charles just led me throughout the dance. He deserves the recognition, not me." He said humbly, but Hera crossed her arms.
“No way, girl! Have you seen your dance? It was something out of a movie!” She brought out her phone, handing it to Atsushi. “Here, I filmed it from a great angle.” Hera added. “Also, you’re wearing his coat, Amelia. You know what that means,” Hera whispered with a wink.
Atsushi played the video and blushed. Oh my god, we look like a real couple. He saw how his eyes were glued to Dazai throughout the dance. How Dazai;s hands were placed firmly on his back. And god— how Dazai looked at him like he was the only person in the room. Atsushi’s heart was beating fast again. But, he continued on with the video. The music was perfect, too. He didn’t notice, but the other girls were watching with him too.
It was at that part— where Dazai sang along with the singer. The girls squealed. And when Dazai lifted him up like he was as light as a feather. Atsushi just lost it. He couldn’t believe that it only happened an hour ago. It felt like ages since he last saw Dazai, he misses him… Wait, what was he saying?
Their moment was disturbed when Atlas was yet again at the stage, microphone at hand. “Alright, it’s already 11:55 PM. Five more minutes until midnight. Are you with your partners?” He asked, receiving a reply from the guests. Atsushi noticed that almost everyone was standing up and moving to the center with their partners.Atlas was still talking, about how the night was such a success. But Atsushi along with the girls weren’t listening. “Amelia, let’s go. We all don’t have partners, so you can come with us until Charles comes back!” Elizabeth suggested as they stood up from their seats. Atsushi nodded.
They were now along with the crowd but a few seconds later, Atsushi lied to them, saying that ‘Charles’ would meet ‘Amelia at a certain spot. But Atsushi just went up the stairs to the door, where him and Dazai first entered. He just readied himself to go away after Atlas would announce this Midnight Event. Atsushi put his gloved hands on the rails of the balcony-like space inside the room. He waited, hoping that Dazai would appear at his back. But no luck.
“Now, as you know— the most awaited part of the night. The Declaration of the King and Queen.” Atlas announced. “Let me call on the singer from earlier to announce,” he said as he left the stage. The singer got the microphone and Atlas disappeared.
Atsushi just sighed. When will this stupid event end, anyway?
“Whent the clock strikes 12, everyone will take off their masks. But,” the singer paused. “Before the dance and after everyone else is able to take off their masks, we will announce the King and Queen. Right then and there, they will take off their mask. They will be the first ones to dance in the Midnight Event, and all the else can follow and join in with their respective partners.” He explained.
As the clock striked 12, everyone cheered and took off their masks. Atsushi decided to take off his, too. He held the mask tightly with his hands. What was the point of this dance, anyway? They already did a jaw-dropping waltz earlier, so what’s the point? Atsushi sighed again and got startled when all the lights went off, except for the spotlight and a few others. It was dark, but you could still see everyone.
It was a bit cold, but then again, Dazai left his coat to him. Atsushi didn’t see his point with that, to be honest. The kiss was necessary, yes. But this? What was Dazai thinking? Whatever, at least it kept him warm. (but he also couldn’t deny the fact that the coat smelled a lot like Dazai, which gave him comfort and warmth) So, he just hugged it to himself and listened to the singer.
“I present to you, this night’s King and Queen!” The singer exclaimed as a couple moved to the stage. They were both holding hands, their outfits matching. The lady wore a puffy white gown, that showed her neck and shoulders. But the dress basically looked like a wedding dress, Atsushi thought. Her mask was painted with elegant white, with a few fweathers on the side. Atsushi couldn’t help but think her blonde hair looked familiar, but he just shrugged it off.
He then looked at the man, who was also wearing white. And wait.. is that who Atsushi thinks he is? Atsushi scratched his eyes lightly, checking in if it was really him.. Oh gosh, it was—
“Thank you all for making us the King and Queen of the night!” The lady announced to the microphone. The couple took off their masks and right then and there….the guests gasped, some clapped too.
Because what the fuck , Atsushi thought as he watched the couple, that’s Dazai-san and Charlotte.
////
Charlotte smiled to herself as she and Charles took off their masks right in front of the crowd. She could hear a few gasps, claps, and other noises. But, she faced her partner and he looked even more handsome without the mask. He looked like a prince and oh my gosh, Charlotte was actually freaking out. She didn’t expect him to look that hot when he took off the mask. But either way, the important part is— she got him with her. All thanks to my little plan! Take that, Amelia! Charlotte thought and smiled.
“I thought the man was with Amelia, what happened?” “Isn’t that Sir Wilson?” “He’s engaged! Why is he there?” Were a few of the crowd’s questions, but Elizabeth and Hera were confident that it had something to do with Charlotte.
“Now, the King and Queen will dance. Please make way!” The singer said, and the guests cleared the space, enough for the couple to dance.
Charles offered his hand up to Charlotte, and she took it eagerly. They both bowed, before the band started. Charles took his hand with hers, and they danced the night away. The band played the famous, “La Valse de L’Amour” for the event.
Charles, yet again, took the crowd’s attention with his perfect moves. Every beat, he slowly accompanied Charlotte with care. Charlotte just followed his lead, getting lost in his eyes. She was just staring at his face (that ever handsome face) and enjoyed the dance.
////
Atsushi looked at the couple, an unknown pain in his chest. He watched them dance perfectly, as if they were dancing in the skies. Like they were made for each other. Was he jealous? Or was he just worried? Probably the latter. But he didn’t know why he could be worried, because even if Atlas or Charlotte did have abilities, Dazai could’ve easily stopped it. The music was playing loudly across the whole room. Maybe he’d just like to dance with a real, beautiful girl before we leave. He thought to himself, but he couldn’t help but shed a tear.
Why was he crying? Oh god, he felt so childish. He had no right to cry. This was just a mission, nothing more, nothing less. But— how Dazai was staring at Charlotte like she gave him life. Atsushi couldn’t stop himself. No one could see him, after all. Might as well cry it all out, right? I mean, there was no denying it now. He had a stupid crush on his mentor. He ignored it before, and it was successful. But Ranpo just had to pair them up for a mission.. causing it to come back.
But not to worry, after this, he’d be back to normal. Or so he believed it would.
So he stood there, crying like an idiot as he watched them dance. He flinched when he felt an unfamiliar hand going up his waist. “What are you doing here all alone, Miss Amelia?” It was Atlas.
Atsushi gulped and wiped off his tears carefully, not to destroy his make-up. He shook his head and faced the man, “I just wanted some fresh air, away from the crowd, sir.” He said, standing face to face with the man. Both didn’t have a mask, so Atsushi could see his face. The man’s face was handsome, looked like he was in his 30’s (but he was older than that, around 40) He looked like a sugar daddy, Atsushi thought.
The man smirked and pulled Atsushi to his chest. “Please, call me Atlas. Unless you have something else in mind?” He suggested with a flirty tone.
Gross… Atsushi thought, but Ranpo did want him to get more information. He looked at Dazai again, who was dancing with Charlotte. “Now, please, face me, Amelia. Ignore that man down there, and focus on me.”
He felt a hand under his chin and he was forced to look at Atlas. He yelped a bit, wanting to push away, but Atlas was just too strong. “There,s no point in fighting, sweetie.” Atlas whispered, letting ‘Amelia’ face the dancing couple with his hand on his chin. “Look at them,” Atlas slowly whispered as he moved closer to ‘Amelia’s’ ear. “Aren’t they just perfect? Look at how Charles just brings Charlotte up in the air.” he then transferred the hand that was in Amelia’s waist higher, to her upper back.
The song was almost done. Atsushi was now crying softly, the tears slowly falling down from his eyes. The music stopped, and he saw Dazai twirling Charlotte one last time and meeting her midway with their hands intertwined. They looked at each other for a solid second, before Dazai kissed her passionately. Charlotte kissed back, and at this point, Atsushi forcibly looked away and looked down at his heels. Atlas pulled him close and hugged him, “Who needs Charles anyway, hm?” He added. Atlas then whispered something inaudible to Atsushi, but next thing Atsushi knew, his eyes were closed. He felt like going to eternal slumber. He felt Atlas lift him up and carried him bridal style. Atsushi couldn’t fight; he couldn’t activate Tiger Snow.
Why? Was Atlas’ ability similar to Dazai’s? He thought to himself as he felt his hand let go of the mask, dropping it to the ground.
////
Throughout the whole dance, Dazai kept picturing Charlotte as Atsushi because god, he just wanted this to be done. Him and Atlas had a deal, after all. He remembered it quite clearly, actually.
They were now inside the room. It’s been a solid 45 minutes and Atlas just invited him to drink. Atlas was telling him more and more about the upcoming auction, and how anxious he was because he just wanted to sell the damn necklace. Dazai sipped the whiskey, and smiled.
“Why are you worried? I’m a sure buyer, after all.”“I just want the necklace out of my hands as soon as possible.” Atlas replied.
The older man stood up and entered another room. Dazai just shrugged and waited. A few seconds later, Atlas appeared with a suitcase in hand. He sat at the seat across Dazai’s and faked a cough.
“This here is the necklace,” he slowly opened the suitcase.
Dazai stared in awe. This was the real thing, he just knew it. He smirked to himself. “And you’re here to make an offer, no?” He leaned back on his chair, lightly stirring the drink at hand.
Atlas nodded. “Then, tell me. A business proposal? A trade of some sort?” Dazai asked.
The older man laughed and closed the suitcase, “My, my Charles. A businessman at heart, eh?”
Dazai shrugged, “Can’t be helped.”
But Atlas shook his head. “It’s simple, really. Have one dance with my daughter, and the necklace will be yours by the end of the night.” He declared casually, putting the suitcase on the table and slowly slid it to Dazai.
“What’s the catch?”
“None. I just want the money as soon as possible. Maybe after the party?”
Dazai thought about it for a few seconds, wanting to make sure that there would be nothing for Atlas’ advantage. He deducted that there would be none. So, in the end, Dazai agreed. They spent the remaining time talking about the price, and then it was time for the dance.
Back to the present, Dazai was now dancing with Charlotte in the middle of the room. They took off their masks, and Charlotte was obviously smitten by his original face. He could hear the whispers of some, mainly on how ‘Charles was supposed to be with Amelia’. Dazai thought the same too, but it can’t be helped.
The dance felt like the dance was forever, but the music was now ending. He couldn’t help but think, where could Atsushi be? He couldn’t look around the crowd, but from the corner of his eye, he saw a figure at the very top of the stairs on where they entranced earlier. He couldn’t see fully, but he knew to himself that it had to be Atsushi.
Just to wow the crowd, Dazai decided to add a little bit of a surprise. As the song ended, he kissed Charlotte. But it meant nothing, at least to him. The crowd clapped, mesmerised by the scene unfolding. Dazai pulled away slowly, only to be greeted with a blushing Charlotte. They bowed again, and their hands met. But before they could exit their current position, Dazai took one last glance to where Atsushi was.
He saw that Atlas was carrying Atsushi. Atlas smirked and striked a look at Dazai, knowing damn well his plan worked.
“Charles, would you like to—“
“I’m sorry, but maybe next time, alright?” He cut Charlotte away, running away to where Atsushi was.
The crowd gasped as Charlotte was left by ‘Charles’ alone in the middle of the party. They were still, after all, the King and Queen of the night.
Dazai now ran as fast as he could, but as he reached the top of the stairs, he was only left with Atsushi’s mask. He took a deep breath and slapped himself mentally. Ranpo was right, Atlas would steal Atsushi away from him, but of course, Dazai wouldn’t give up that easily.
He kneeled down with one foot, the other supporting him. He brought the mask to his face and brought his ring to his mouth, whispering to it softly. “Ya heard everything, right Ranpo?” He asked playfully, no hint of worriedness in his voice. “He stole Atsushi. How dare he...” he trailed off, holding the mask tighter. “You know what this means, right?” Dazai said to no one in particular, but the Agency knew damn well what he meant.
Meanwhile at the Agency, the three members were listening carefully. It was now late at midnight, but they all insisted that they’d stay. Yosano was now freaking out, and complaining how Dazai could be so calm. Kunikida was now calling for re-enforcements. And Ranpo was just laughing quietly, “Now, this is some twisted Cinderella story.” He smirked and got more interested at how his plan unfolded.
Notes:
Alright! Sorry if this was shorter than usual, but the next chapter will be up soon. Thank you so much for all the feedback! I enjoyed writing this, too! But anyway, I think the next chapter will be the last? I dunno yet. What are your thoughts with Dazai at the last part? A bit possessive? Remember, leave a kudos and some thoughts! Thank you again!
Chapter 4: Before The Spell Breaks
Chapter Text
Atsushi slowly opened his eyes. He had such a great sleep and it was safe to say that it was the best sleep he’d ever gotten so far). But, before he opened his eyes, he realized that he was lying down in an unfamiliar place. He opened his eyes fully and his hands (which still had gloves) touched the very soft… bed? What? He sat up, adjusting his vision. He then scanned the room as he sat on the bed.
He was sitting down on a gigantic bed— something that looked like it was from a hotel. It looked like a king-size bed, with it being covered in a red velvet bed sheet. He looked around the room, and it was huge too. The walls were painted a light shade of red. There was a closet, a few drawers. Dazai’s jacket was in the chair beside the bed. Heck, there was even a table inside the room. It was as big as Atsushi’s apartment. Atsushi looked at the bedside drawer. He noticed that there were handcuffs. He raised an eyebrow, what could this be possibly for?
He opened one of the drawers. There was a blindfold, too. Not to mention, that it had a seductive shade of red. What the fuck? Moving on to the second drawer, he saw.. Atsushi’s face reddened. Why was there a dildo in the drawer? He grabbed it and inspected a bit more. There were condoms, a bottle of lube.
He then recalled his situation. He remembered being brought up by Atlas in here. Atlas, where could he be? And what were his intentions, Atsushi thought. He then took another long look at the room. After a few seconds, he realized. He wasn’t a kid. He wasn’t innocent or dumb enough to realize what this room was.. It was Atlas’ pleasure room. He was now nervous… Ranpo wasn’t joking when he said that this guy had a type.Atsushi cringed at the thought.
He needed to get out of here as soon as possible. But, before he could think of a plan, the door opened. “… make sure that no one gets through the security, got it?” It was a familiar voice, Atlas.
Atsushi didn’t move, cause he remembered that this man had a certain ability that made him vulnerable enough to get kidnapped. Atsushi gulped.
Atlas dismissed his servant and turned to face Atsushi. “My, a little impatient, aren’t we Amelia?” he asked, a smirk on his face. Atlas approached Atsushi and sat beside him (a little too close for personal spaces) Atsushi was shaking. Why was he shaking? He could easily activate Tiger Snow, but he couldn’t.
Atlas then turned to him, “bold of you to greet me with a dildo at your hand, sweetie.”Atsushi then gasped, looking at his other hand, which was actually still holding on to the said toy.
He quickly let go of it, face still red as ever. “I-it’s not what it looks like!” He still used his Amelia voice. The last thing he wanted was to blow his cover at a time like this. He still wanted to pull out his ability as a surprise, in order to attack Atlas right then and there.
But he can’t, for some reason. There was something stopping him.
“Hm,” Atlas hummed as he brought a hand to Atsushi’s cheeks, pushing him lightly to the bed frame. This is so gross..Atsushi thought as he pushed Atlas away, making the older man just smirk even more. “Feisty, aren’t we?”
Get a grip, old man, was what Atsushi wanted to say but he leaned on the bed frame with his arms covering his chest. “Why are you doing this?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I want you to be mine.”
Atsushi groaned. “Where’s Charles?”
“That’s none of your concern,” Atlas replied as he then again slowly went to Atsushi again. He took off his coat and started to unbutton his shirt. “Now, will you be a good girl and obey daddy?”
What the fuck, what the fuck, what the fuck. This was so wrong in so many levels. The guy had a daughter that called him that. This guy is sick. As Atlas put a hand on his shoulder, Atsushi decided that he was gonna give this guy a punch or two.
He tightened his arm, waiting a few seconds for the tiger to appear. But no luck. “I see you’re trying to activate your ability, hm?” The man said, his shirt now halfway unbuttoned. “I’d like to see you try, but given my ability.. I’m afraid that you can’t use it on me.” He winked. And Atsushi swore there was a bomb inside him, waiting to explode.
He made a fist with his dominant hand and punched Atlas in the face. Enough for him to back off. “You’re surprisingly strong for a girl, mhm?” He then again made that stupid face.
Atsushi grabbed the lamp beside him. This was the least he could do. “Don’t move, cause I won’t hesitate!” He declared, slowly getting up from the bed. He moved to the side, far enough for Atlas to jump to him.
“Amelia, dear, please sit down.” The man said, with a hint of dominance in his voice.Atsushi just wanted to use his ability to knock out the shit out of this guy. “Shut up! Why did you make me like this?!”
“My ability, Puppeteer, can make me control people using my voice.” He explained briefly, “I can even order them to hinder themselves from using their ability. I can order you around to do so much more, but I’m not. So, settle down.”
His ability isn’t that all great in combat, but in manipulation he realized that Atlas had an advantage. Atsushi was silent, thinking of a plan as he looked down on the ground. What could he do, given the fact that this guy probably ordered him to stop his ability.
Atlas approached the lady in the corner of the room. He pinned ‘Amelia’ to the wall, making the lady startled. Atlas looked at Amelia— who looked very much vulnerable at the given situation.
“I see that you already get the situation, mhm?”
He reached down on Amelia’s neck, his other hand groping the young lady’s back. “Now, let’s start.” Atlas started kissing Atsushi on his bare neck, traveling slowly up to his lips. The younger man couldn’t help but tremble in fear. Atlas, yet again, whispered something in his ear, making his mind go blank.
///
Dazai was now talking to Kunikida via phone. He was now in the entrance hall, and being scolded at for leaving Atsushi alone.
“Are you mad?! Leaving the kid alone like that, and with the suspect?!” Kunikida practically yelled through the phone.
Dazai pouted and leaned on the wall, “Calm down, Kunikida! I’ve got it all under control. And, Atsushi-kun can protect himself.”
On the other side of the phone, Kunikida was driving as fast as he could. Ranpo ordered him to go to the party, and so he did. It was nearly 1 AM, and Kunikida just wondered.. what type of party lasts that long? Anyway, Yosano insisted on coming with him, saying that she wanted to re-do Atsushi’s make-up. So, Ranpo ended up going with him too. They were now on their way to the party with Yosano holding the phone for Kunikida.
“Look, just..” Kunikida groaned. “Just look for Atsushi, yeah? We installed a tracking device on his ring. There’s an application on your phone for you to use.”
“Right, right” Dazai happily cheered. He then ended the call, quickly looking for the application. “Now, just you wait, Atlas..” He said, his eyes turning dark. He didn’t know but he never felt this rage ever since the Port Mafia, but Dazai didn’t mind. He had all the right to get mad.
He then headed inside, the guests were now starting to go home. He headed down the hall, following the instructions the GPs sent. He was walking through the crowd, eager to push them away but some still greeted him. He stopped when Charlotte was in front of him. Oh, her again.. Dazai sighed. She was beautiful, he admit. Perfect enough to have a double suicide, but there was something off about her, he could just sense it.
“Charles..” Charlotte started, a pouty look on her face.
Dazai faked a smile, “Yes, darling?” He said, putting a strand of her hair behind her ear.
“Won’t you join me for a stroll?” She asked eagerly, like a puppy.
“I’m sorry, but maybe another time? I’m quite busy, you see.”
Charlotte didn’t reply for a. few seconds. There was an awkward silence, but none of them seems to mind. She just crossed her arms and huffed.
“You love her, don’t you?” she asked out of a sudden.
Dazai was taken aback. Charlotte was talking about ‘Amelia’. “I do, and I love her very much. You understand, right?” he replied, trying to sound convincing as possible. But, there was a part there that he didn’t lie about, though. Or maybe he didn’t lie at all.
“… I don’t, but.. “ she trailed off. Dazai raised an eyebrow, “but what?”
“I want you happy so,” she handed him a key. “Here’s the key to daddy’s room. He probably took her with him.”
Dazai took the key, a bit surprised. But, it was also his first time hearing such a genuine from a woman. He hugged her tightly, “Thank you, Charlotte. I’m sure you’ll find the one, someday,” as much as he wanted to flirt with Charlotte the rest of the night, he couldn’t. He had a mission at hand.
“Yeah, yeah, now go to her or whatever.” she said, a hint of pain on her voice. Dazai placed a quick peck on her lips, thanking her again.
He left her there and headed to the rooms. Maybe she isn’t that bad, he thought. Maybe I’ll meet her after the mission, he said to himself as he walked towards the hallway.
Dazai was now walking the endless hallway of the place. It was practically a palace, with all the paintings and chandeliers you’d see in each hallway. He checked the map on his phone again, realizing that the room where Atsushi is was already close.
As he checked his phone, Kunikida called again. “We’re almost there, Dazai. Where’s the kid?” Kunikida greeted, taking Dazai by surprise as to how calm the man was.
Dazai stopped walking. “Oh come on, Kunikida! It’s only been 30 minutes or so. You expect me to have that tiger in such a short time?!”
From the other side, he heard Yosano laughing. “Yeah, I am. I need you there with him! What if he threw another rampage again, huh?! The Agency’s funds won’t pay for it if so. You’ll be the one!” Kunikida threatened.
Dazai chuckled, “Now, don’t be like that! I’ll have him with me in no time.” He started walking again slowly.
“Just hurry up, will you?! We already gave you a guide and you’re nowhere near….” Kunikida rambled on and on. They were actually near the venue, and Kunikida didn’t notice but Dazai wasn’t listening. Either way, he still continued on and on.
“…and I swear if you—“ Kunikida paused when he heard multiple gun shots and a muffled voice at the end of the line.
Yosano gasped, “Was that Dazai? I guess you need me in this mission, after all!” She joked.
Ranpo woke up from his nap, Kunikida was still holding his phone. There were still gunshots, tons of them. He couldn’t tell who was firing but he knew there were a lot of people.
“Are we there yet, Kunikida?” Ranpo asked sluggishly. This was the last thing he wanted— it was nearly 2 AM, after all. He was supposed to be sleeping right now.
“No, but we’re near… Say Ranpo, could you hold the phone for me?” Kunikida requested, as he stepped on the engine faster. He was a bit worried, because Dazai wasn’t answering. Ranpo held the phone in his hand.
“Why are you guys so worried?” he asked.
Ranpo just sighed in boredom. He ended the call with Dazai. “I don’t get it, Dazai knows what he’s doing, after all. He probably got the bad guys under control,” he explained casually. It was true, though. And no one could deny that.
“That’s the point, Ranpo..” Kunikida sighed. “Have you seen him go mad? I was worried for the other guys because Dazai isn’t himself when he’s mad…”
Yosano nodded, “you got a point. You could say he went on a rampage, hm?”
“Probably,” Kunikida replied and drove faster.
Meanwhile, back to Dazai, who was standing among around 50+ men who were lying down with gunshots on their body. “That wasn’t so bad, hm?” He asked to the last man, as he stepped on his chest. He saw the man trembling in fear. The poor guy couldn’t even utter a word. He reloaded his gun, aiming for the guy’s eye.
"Lucky for you, buddy. I won’t kill you— just hurt you, real bad.” Dazai smirked and hit the man on his shoulders and knees.
He walked away, a bit impressed that he still managed to singlehandedly beat 50 or so men with one gun. Just like old times.. He thought to himself. He walked further along the hall, and saw a huge door. He brought out the key Charlotte gave him, and it worked. he opened the door, with his gun ready.
But oh boy— did he see something unexpected<.i>.
When he entered the room, he was expecting a wild tiger attacking Atlas. But… you could say it was similar.
Atlas was seated on a red sofa with his shirt off. Nothing on but his boxers, his hair undeniably messy. And, not to mention, both of his hands and feet were tied up. His mouth was tied in a tight necktie, his well toned body showing. (Dazai assumed that it was Atlas’ necktie) and the guy was obviously flustered.
But the next thing shocked Dazai even more.
Atsushi was seated between the older man’s legs, with the wig’s previously ‘bun’ hair untied. Atsushi’s fake hair was long, reached until his upper back and it undeniably suited him. And, to Dazai’s surprise, he wasn’t wearing his gown. It looked like he was wearing an oversize button up white shirt. It was safe to say it was Atlas’, since it was too big for Atsushi. The sleeves were too long for his hands and it reached to Atsushi’s upper thigh, giving Dazai the impression that he wore nothing underneath. His slim legs were showing, too. And the fact that Atsushi still had the make-up on and all the accessories earlier— he still looked like Amelia. So, maybe he still wasn’t found out.
Lastly, Atsushi was pointing a knife to Atlas’ neck with one hand and the other on Atlas’ shoulder.
“What the fuck are you doing with my fiancé?!” Dazai asked, still in character. He dropped the gun, and approached them.
“I can e-explain, D-Daz—“ Atsushi started, but Dazai lifted him up and put him in the bed.
“You can explain later, sweetie,” he winked at Atsushi. Atsushi then realized what he was wearing in front of his mentor. Oh god, he blushed quickly and covered himself up with a blanket.
Atlas was now staring at Dazai, who was now walking to him. Dazai took off the tie on his mouth. Before Dazai could even start, Atlas said some sort of spell. Oh, so that’s his ability. Dazai laughed, “That doesn’t work on me, bud.”
“What?!”
“Hate to break it to you but,” Dazai now made a fist with his hand. “This is for touching what’s clearly mine.” Dazai punched Atlas strongly, enough for a tooth to fall out and his mouth bleed. “Didn’t I make it clear earlier, hm? Touch her, and you're dead .” He punched him again, causing Atlas to pass out.
He probably got carried away, but the guy deserved it. Dazai thought. He faced Atsushi, who was still hiding underneath the blankets. Dazai scanned the room, seeing that his white coat from earlier was still there. He smirked; he didn’t want to give up this little act just yet.
“Amelia, the coast is clear.” He softly brought the blanket out and placed his coat on Atsushi’s shoulders.
“Dazai-san..”
“It’s Charles, darling.” Dazai smirked and pointed to the CCTV cameras in the corner of the room, meaning they still had to act.
Oh my god, there were cameras?! Atsushi blushed, realizing that everything from earlier was recorded. God, so embarrassing…
It took Atsushi a few seconds to reply. He took a deep breath and grabbed Dazai’s arm, pulling him to a hug. Atsushi wrapped his arms around Dazai’s neck. “Where were you, Charles? I was so scared…” he said in his Amelia voice yet again. But, then again, he was scared at a certain point. So there was no lie in what he said.
Dazai hugged back. “I’m sorry.” He whispered and kissed Atsushi’s cheek. Before Atsushi could even reply, Dazai scooped him up and carried him bridal style.
“Let me carry you, hm? You look tired.” Were they still acting? Atsushi was so confused but… this would probably his only chance to do it. He held on to Dazai’s neck and snuggled to his chest. Dazai then brought out his phone, quickly calling the police and carried Atsushi again.
Dazai carried him throughout their walk to the main hall. Atsushi’s eyes were closed, a comfortable silence with them. He was still wearing the wig, and still very much looked like a girl. So, maybe they were still playing pretend. (There was still a part of him hoping that the real Dazai would treat him like this, but that would probably never happen)
A few moments later, they were now at the main hall. Dazai woke up Atsushi slowly. Atsushi saw that there were no more people in the hall. Thank god.. he thought. At least they could drop the act now, right? He gave a sigh of relief.
“Dazai-san you could put me down—" Dazai put him down quickly as possible. They were now in the room wherein they once danced. Where they waltz their night away.
Atsushi was staring at the hall, still not believing they were just there a few hours ago. Time flew so fast, and Atsushi couldn't wish but rewind it. If he could, he'd do it again. But that was near impossible so they just stood there, embracing the silence.
"Atsushi-kun,"
"Yeah?"
Dazai faced him, "Do you know how worried I was, when Atlas kidnapped you?" He confessed. He just needed to tell Atsushi; to get it out of his chest.
Atsushi's heart was racing, "Y-you were?"
Dazai nodded. "Yeah," he laughed. "I went mad with his security team. You should've seen it..." he said with a guilty tone. Atsushi knew that Dazai wanted to prevent violence as much as possible but, it can't be stopped entirely.
Atsushi placed his hand on his. "N-no.. it's okay, Dazai-san. I'm sorry, too. I willingly went by with Atlas, not knowing he lured me to his trap."
Dazai intertwined his hands with Atsushi's, "I'm just glad that you're safe. He didn't do anything, did he?" He asked him with full concern.
Atsushi blushed, "N-no! It's not what it looks like, especially when you walked in!"
Dazai laughed, he then kept teasing Atsushi as the moments passed. However, their time was interrupted when they heard a voice.
“Dazai Osamu! What the hell are you doing?!” A too familiar voice said.
Dazai smiled and faced their direction, holding Atsushi’s shoulders. “Kunikida! About time you arrived,” He complained, a pout on his lips.
Kunikida approached them and pulled Dazai away from Atsushi. “You didn’t answer my question,” he said and tapped his feet, a sign of annoyance.
“Well, just talking.”
“Whatever. Let's go, the both of you need to sleep. Tomorrow, I expect a full report, got it?!”
“What?! Kunikida!" Dazai pouted.
Kunikida sighed, there’s no point in arguing. with him. “You know what? Let's just go. Ranpo and Yosano already got the necklace.” He said, and then walked away.
Dazai then again carried Atsushi. “Dazai-san? Put me down, I’m heavy.” he said.
“You’re as light as a feather, Atsushi-kun. Besides, I prefer you in my arms.”
Atsushi just ignored the comment, figuring that he blushed too many times today, and comfortably snuggled to Dazai’s chest.
Dazai stopped walking when they were already outside, Kunikida was talking to the police. Ranpo and Yosano discussing the necklace. Dazai brought Atsushi down and intertwined his hands with his. They were now at the garden, with the water fountain beneath the moonlight.
“Say, Atsushi...” He turned to him.
“Yeah?”
“Would you like to continue our dance earlier?”
Atsushi glanced at the others, who seemed occupied. "I dunno... they're waiting, Dazai-san. And I'm not wearing a gown."
"Come on, Cinderella. Before the spell ends, please?” Dazai said.
Atsushi sighed, thinking that it was too good to be true. But it was happening, right then and there. Dazai was actually asking him to dance. He didn't reply, but he just placed his hand on Dazai's shoulders. Dazai then placed his hand with Atsushi's and smiled. "Follow my lead, alright?" he said once again and Atsushi couldn't help but giggle. He nodded and they danced.
They were just dancing there in silence for awhile, but Dazai started singing. And his voice was angelic
""So close... to reaching... that famous happy ending," he sang, his eyes not leaving Atsushi's. "Almost believing... this one's not pretend.." He continued.
Atsushi felt it again, his heart beating fast. "Now you're... beside me.. and look how far we've gone.." Dazai twirled him around once more.
"So far... we are... so close.." Dazai trailed as he didn't finish the lyrics. This time, however, he got closer to Atsushi. Their noses were now touching.
Dazai stopped dancing and cupped Atsushi's cheeks.
Maybe Dazai did want the night to last forever. For them to be like this, dancing endlessly as they took everyone’s breath away. Just maybe— but he knew that was too good to be true. It was good while it lasted, but all good things come to an end. So, before their fairy tale ended, maybe he’d like to just add one more detail.
Atsushi got on his tiptoes and kissed Dazai one last time. The kiss wasn’t long, but it was long enough for them to cherish it.
Dazai pulled away, looking at how beautiful Atsushi was. He knew that underneath the make-up he’d still be beautiful. Without the wigs, gown, or pretending, he'd be perfect either way .
“Oy, let’s go!” Ranpo shouted at them.
But before Atsushi could leave, Dazai whispered to his ear. “You know, you made me feel alive tonight, Atsushi. Thank you,” he said sincerely. For someone who kept babbling on and on about wanting to die, it was a surprise to hear that from him. Atsushi just smiled, “D-don’t mention it, Dazai-san.” He left and headed to the car.
As Atsushi left, Dazai couldn’t help but smile sadly. “Well, the spell is broken… Looks like all will go back to normal,” he said to himself. He didn’t know why, but there was a hint of sadness when he said that. But, no matter, nothing like reading a good book can’t solve.
They were so close to reaching that famous happy ending, after all. Dazai almost believed that wasn’t pretend. They were so close.. yet still, so far. What a fool he was.. but it was okay. He figured that this was for the best.

Chapter Text
It’s been three months since the undercover mission. The necklace has been returned to its rightful place, Atlas was sent to jail for stealing the said necklace and for owning illegal underground businesses. Charlotte, meanwhile, was said to be innocent and was now therefore the head of the Watanabe Enterprises. When Charlotte (along with Elizabeth and Hera) found out that ‘Charles’ was actually Dazai, they weren’t all that shocked. But, when they found out that ‘Amelia’ was actually Atsushi, a guy who managed to pull off being a girl and convincing everyone, they were more amazed than surprise.
Charlotte apologized to Dazai and Atsushi, saying that she was just really desperate for a fiancé. But, the young lady changed. For the last three months, she managed to slowly rebuild her father’s enterprises in a completely legal way. Turns out, there was more to looks when it came to her. She was actually smart, and business minded; an independent woman .She became more mature, too. Not to mention, Hera and Elizabeth became close friends with Atsushi, too. They would drop by at the office time to time, inviting the guy to go shopping. Heck, they even managed to get Kyouka with them.
All in all, everything was fine.
In the ADA, they were having the usual routine. Even after the undercover mission, Dazai didn’t even bother bringing it up ever again. Which kinda broke Atsushi’s heart (screw the kinda— it broke his heart real bad) Atsushi kept thinking of the night with him and Dazai together, the waltz that played as they were in each other arms. Maybe he should’ve confessed what he felt right then and there. Maybe he should’ve made a move while he had a chance. But he didn’t. Dazai was now acting normally again, teasing him and pissing off Kunikida.
Everything was back to normal. And Atsushi didn’t want to mess it up.
Except for the fact that it wasn’t fine for him. He didn’t know if Dazai felt the same, but he knew that he only liked him in a caring way. Which just gave him a deeper reason to hate himself. He really wanted to move on, he really tried. But the longer he bottled his emotions, the more he just sucked. But, at least he got to get out his feelings every time he cried. He figured that there was nothing wrong in crying, as long as he wasn’t hurting anyone.
It didn’t show but Atsushi almost cried himself to sleep inside the closet, quietly but enough for Kyouka to hear.
There was a time when Kyouka could’t bear to hear Atsushi sobbing. She wanted to help him; whatever his problem was. So, she knocked. “Atsushi-kun? You up?” She asked, trying to sound less sleeply.
Atsushi rubbed his eyes, trying to push the tears in as he did so. He gulped, not wanting to sound like he just cried.”Y-Yeah,” he opened the door and was faced with a very concerned looking Kyouka.
Kyouka ushered him to sit beside her. He did so. She sighed, “Tell me. What’s wrong?”
“W-what? Kyouka-chan, there’s nothing wrong!” He reassure the younger girl and faked a smile.
“No, you’re not. You’ve been crying yourself to sleep for— for like the last three months.” She put an arm on his shoulder. “You’re hiding your pain to yourself; it’s not healthy.” She paused, looking at Atsushi, who had a hand on his face, trying to stop himself from crying.
“Whatever it is, please tell me. I don’t even know if I can solve your problem but,” she hugged him slowly. “You know I’m always here to listen, right? It’ll be better to at least get out what you’re feeling than to hide it forever.”
Kyouka had a point. Atsushi hugged her slowly, cried on to her shoulder softly. He felt like a kid again, crying like this. But Kyouka didn’t seem to mind, she just patted his back and waited for him to speak.
A few moments later, Atsushi pulled away.
“So, tell me. What’s the problem?”
“I like someone.” He said briefly, leaving Kyouka to wonder.
She calculated the probability as to who it can be. Taking in the beginning when Atsushi started crying, she assumed that it was a girl from their undercover mission. Perhaps Atsushi fell for a girl when they were at a party, but they parted ways? She asked herself, curious as ever. But, she waited for Atsushi to continue.
He gulped, trying to compose his thoughts. “And— the thing is, I liked them for awhile now. I had the perfect chance to tell them but…”
“But?”
“I blew it. I didn’t tell them, and now they’re just treating me normally. And it sucks because I see them everyday and I can’t avoid them, or else they’ll know. And it’s just… it hurts, knowing damn well you don’t have a chance with them…” He confessed and wiped a tear away. “A-and.. you’ll have no choice b-but to be a part of their life as a friend, supporting them… They don’t even know how much it hurt when they shrugged off what happened like nothing.” he confessed.
Atsushi knew that Kyouka already had an idea or two as to who he was talking about, but her expression didn’t change. She still looked at him with concern and love. “I see..” Kyouka’s first guess was wrong. But, she was already sure on who it really was. She bet her life on it, that it was 100% Dazai.
She knew better than to tease Atsushi right now, so for the rest of the hour, she just reassured Atsushi and cuddled him. She also brought out some stories, for him to at least cheer up. And he did. “I’m much better now, Kyouka-chan.” He faced her, a genuine smile on his face.
“You were right, I just needed to get it out. The feelings are still there but..” he looked down with a sigh. “But at least I know that I can live with it. Or I’m going to try, explore and find new people.”“Yeah, I’m glad.”
“I’ll head to sleep now, make sure to turn off the lights, alright?” He reminded and went inside the closet, closing it. Kyouka just nodded in response, giving a minute or two before going out of Atsushi’s apartment.
She brought out her phone, careful not to set it on speaker mode. “Hey, yeah. It’s me. Sorry if it’s sudden but..” she talked to the other voice in the phone, who gladly answered Kyouka’s call after the first ring. “Can you do me a favor?” She asked.
////
It’s been a week since Atsushi told Kyouka his little dilemma. He was still sad, there’s no denying in that .But, it felt like the weight on his shoulder was lessened. He didn’t act no different from when he was working, just normal. He didn’t want to rise suspicions. So, today was a day like any other. Atsushi on his laptop, fixing a few paperwork that Kunikida ordered him to do so.
Ranpo and Yosano were out to get some groceries. Kenji went out to do some errands, the siblings were being…. themselves. Kyouka was there with him, and Kunikida too. Meanwhile, the President sent Dazai out on a mission that’ll probably take him a day or two.
“Oy, kid.” Kunikida dropped a wrapped box in front of Atsushi’s desk.
“Yes, Kunikida-san?” He paused his file, standing up to talk to him.
He adjusted his glasses, “I need you and Kyouka to drop off this package at this location ” He handed a card with an address on it.
Atsushi nodded, lifting up the package, trying to take a peek. “Hey, no peeking!” Kunikida slapped Atsushi’s hand away. “R-right!” He nodded and laughed.
Kyouka stood up, inspecting the box. “Say, who are we going to give it to?” She asked.
“Ah.. about that..” Kunikida looked away, eyeing Kyouka. “Didn’t I already tell you earlier?”
Kyouka raised an eyebrow, taking a second or two before finally getting it. “Ah, yeah. That old lady?”
Kunikida nodded, and faced Atsushi. “She’s an important asset to us, so please deliver this package with care.”
“You can count on us, Kunikida-san!” Atsushi declared.
He left the building along with Kyouka, the package at his hand. Kunikida sighed to himself, praying that the plan will be successful.
/////
It was afternoon when they went out. Kyouka and Atsushi making a bit of small talk as they went on their way to the address.
“I’ve never heard of this address before…” Kyouka confessed, looking at the card.
Atsushi’s eyes widened in surprise. “You haven’t heard of it? I thought it’d be famous with teens your age!”
“I’m not like other teens..” she mumbled, causing Atsushi to ruffle her hair playfully.
“Whatever you say,” he laughed. “Anyway, it’s basically this new café, with a cute ambiance and all. And, not to mention, their rooftop is heavenly. Even celebrities go there, Kyouka!”
Kyouka’s eyes glittered in excitement as she heard the word café. “After we deliver this package, maybe we can grab a slice of cake or two?” She suggested, pouting her lips.
“Of course!” He stopped walking, seeing that they’ve already arrived.
The building in front of them was huge. The entrance door was glass, so they could see the interior.
“We’re here!” Kyouka grabbed Atsushi’s wrist and pulled him inside the two-floor building. It was cute; there were tables that lined up inside. Most of the customers were students, with their laptop. Some were reading, and others just chatting. The place was lively, and perfect. The aroma of coffee was strong, but it smelt good.
“Let’s get a chair at the rooftop, Atsushi-kun!”
“We haven’t even ordered yet—“ he replied, but Kyouka pulled him up the stairs to the rooftop.
And wow— it didn’t disappoint. There were a line of lightbulbs that gave it a chic look. Some chairs were bean bags, the tables were round. There was even a min-garden that had a succulent. Not to mention, there was a cute fountain in the middle. All in all, it was paradise.
Kyouka instantly pointed to a seat, looked like it was a couple’s seat because of the candles and the roses. “This is perfect, Atsushi-kun!”She let Atsushi sit, as she walked around the rooftop. “K-Kyouka-chan!” He called out, blushing a bit.
“Whaaaat? They give a discount for couples!” She explained, pointing at the sign that explained the discount offers.
Atsushi leaned on his seat, sighing. “We still need to deliver this package!” He reminded, taking a look around the rooftop to see if there were old ladies. There was nothing, just a few couples and group of friends.
“Oh yeah!” Kyouka went beside Atsushi. “Let me search downstairs, you stay here with the package.” She said brightly and leaving Atsushi by himself.
He checked the view. It was marvelous; you could see the city from this view— the cars, the people walking, and just literally every single detail in general. Atsushi loved it; he tends to appreciate the small things in life. He never thought that he’d be able to experience this, though. To live in a city with a stable job and a group of friends. This was way out of his plan; but Dazai suddenly came to his life.
He gave him hope that he still had a chance in this world. That he was actually needed for once. Dazai introduced him to a new world that Atsushi never expected to experience. And he was thankful to him for that. For saving him back there; for seeing something in Atsushi that no one didn’t.
He wished that Dazai was here. He’d love this view; except he’d mention about jumping off. But all in all, Atsushi felt like Dazai would appreciate this view. He imagined that Dazai would talk about the old times, and telling Atsushi not to follow his footsteps. He’d then see a girl, and flirt with her, leaving Atsushi alone. That’s what would probably happen.
But Dazai wasn’t here; he was off on a mission. Atsushi sighed to himself, getting off his thoughts. He looked around, realizing that there was no one else there.
He could’ve swore that there were people up here. Where did they go?!Atsushi gulped and stood up from his seat, slowly getting his gun from his pocket. This was dangerous. Was there an ability user in the said building, and they somehow made the others vanish? Where was Kyouka? Was she safe? God, what bad timing this was. Atsushi grabbed the package, trying to protect it. There was something off with the atmosphere, he couldn’t sense it but… there was something wrong. Definitely.
He looked around once again, now carefully observing each and every object. As he was looking over one last time, he heard footsteps approaching. Atsushi pointed his gun to the door, ready to face the intruder.
“Put your hands up where I can see them!” He declared pointing the gun at the person who entered the rooftop.

Chapter 6: Never Knew I Needed
Chapter Text
“Pfft… ‘Put your hands where I can see them!’” The ‘intruder’ mimicked, trying to hide their laughter. “What are you, a cop?!” They joked and laughed even more.
Atsushi slowly brought the gun down, adjusting his vision to see the so-called ‘intruder’
His eyes widened. “D-Dazai-san?! What are you doing here?!” He asked, voice full of curiosity and concern at the same time. He let go of the package, carefully putting it in the table as he slowly approached his mentor.
Dazai was supposed to be in a mission— not here. Heck, he should be anywhere else but here. Was he out of his mind? Was he slacking off again? Atsushi questioned.. The older man pouted, seeing that Atsushi was now in front of him. “Is it a sin to drop by, Atsushi-kun?” he asked in a playful tone.
“You’re supposed to be at a mission, Dazai-san!” He reminded his mentor, trying to sound normal as possible.
There was a few seconds of silence. “Hm.. what if I told you that this is my mission?” He shared a look at Atsushi and smirked. His hands roaming to Atsushi’s cheeks and cupping it delicately.
Atsushi flinched, jerking away from his touch. “Nice joke. But really, what are you doing here? Kunikida-san might get mad.” He got Dazai’s hand out of his cheek and took a step away from him.
Just act like your usual, worrisome self and everything will be fine. Atsushi assured himself, taking a deep breath and closed his eyes for a second or two.
He heard footsteps approaching him as he closed his eyes. He felt a presence right in front of him, and of course it’s none other than his mentor. “I wasn’t lying, Atsushi.” Dazai said, putting both his hands on his shoulders. The tone in his voice was different, it was serious.
Atsushi opened his eyes and looked up at the tall figure right in front of him. He could literally push away, but he didn’t want to. He tried to stop himself from blushing. “Is that so? Then, what is your mission here? Take the delivery out of my hands?”
That was probably it. I mean, what else could be the possible answer? Maybe Kunikida figured that Dazai was way more qualified to deliver this important package than him? Or maybe there really was an ability user in the said building, and Dazai was looking for them? Atsushi thought hundreds of reasons, trying to mentally comprehend as to what Dazai said.
Sighing to himself, the younger man faced his mentor yet again. “So, what is it?” He asked once again.
There was a brief moment of silence. No sound coming out of their mouths, except for their breathing. It was mid-afternoon now, the city lights started to open their lights. The clouds were as clear as ever, the sun being the perfect background. The drip of water could be heard as the fountain on the rooftop functioned; it was the only thing next to the chirping of the birds that could be heard. Not to mention, the sound of the city cars down the road.
Atsushi took a deep breath yet again. The man wasn’t answering his question. He felt like Dazai drew this wall to him ever since that event. Yes, he acted the same with others but to Atsushi, it was like Dazai was just… distant. Like something was stopping him from crossing the wall. There was something that Dazai was holding onto, Atsushi just couldn’t figure it out. Just like right now, despite being face to face to each other, Atsushi felt like they were so far apart.
But that distance was closed when Atsushi felt a pair of arms wrap around his back. His face in the crook of Dazai’s neck, fully smelling the scent he missed so damn much.Dazai was hugging Atsushi, he found the young man melting into the hug. “Atsushi..” he started as Atsushi slowly hugged back.
“I’m so sorry.” The three words escaped his mouth, without him even thinking it over. But he knew that he wanted to say that for awhile now.
Atsushi’s eyes widened, patting Dazai’s back slowly. “E-eh?!” He pulled away, Dazai’s hands still wrapped around Atsushi’s waist.
“Look, if it’s about your pranks…” Atsushi looked away, biting his lip. “Then it’s okay. I perfectly understand,” he smiled at him, trying to lighten up the mood.
Dazai looked at him with teary eyes, pouting like a puppy. He pulled him to a hug again, “Oh Atsushi-kun, why didn’t you tell me before?” He asked.
That’s where Atsushi freaked. Does Dazai know that he likes him? “Tell you what? I’m not quite catching up, Dazai-san.” Maybe he just needed to play pretend and deny it once Dazai brings it up; tell him that he has the wrong idea.
There was a second of silence. Dazai took a deep breath. “I know already, Atsushi and…”Yep. There was no point in denying it now. Dazai knew. Atsushi just prayed for the best, for him not to be ignored once he tells the truth.
“And what?” He asked, still engulfed with the very long hug.
Dazai pulled away lightly, their faces now inches apart. Their noses were practically touching.
“I wish you would’ve told me because I feel the same.” He said casually, but with an honest tone.
Wait… did Atsushi hear that right? Did… did Dazai just tell him that he felt the same? Wait, was that a joke? Or is this just a dream? Atsushi looked away, a blush spreading throughout his face. How can he face Dazai right now?
Dazai’s other hand cupped his chin, making Atsushi face him again. They stared at each other for a moment, their eyes glued. Dazai slowly put his lips on Atsushi’s, kissing it softly. He closed his eyes and pulled Atsushi close.
Atsushi’s mind was a mess right now, but when Dazai kissed him— everything became clear. It took him a couple of seconds, but he found himself kissing back. His hands went to hook themselves up at Dazai’s neck. Dazai bit his lip softly, and Atsushi couldn’t help but moan at the action. They pulled away lightly, catching their breaths.
“You have no idea how damn long I waited to do that,” Dazai confessed, starting to lean in for another kiss.
As much as Atsushi wanted to do it again, he put a hand on Dazai’s mouth. “W-wait, at least explain, Dazai-san!”
Dazai escaped Atsushi’s hand on his mouth. “Eh? Isn’t this enough?”
Atsushi shook his head. “No!”
“Very well,” he picked up Atsushi bridal style.
Atsushi looked at Dazai with surprise, “Dazai!”
“About time you dropped the ‘-san’,” he teased, still carrying a squirming Atsushi. He put him down on the nearest chair.
What was Dazai up to? Was he gonna sing his way out of this? Atsushi didn’t know but he was sure as hell shocked when the older man kneeled on one knee and held his hand with his.
This looks like damn proposal! Atsushi thought to himself, his face as red as ever.
Dazai cleared his throat, causing Atsushi to fully center to him.
“Atsushi..” he sighed. “Oh god, where do I even start?” He laughed lightly, putting a hand on his head. He realized how unprepared he was for this.
“Ah, let’s start from the very beginning!” He declared. “I took you in without putting much thought to it, to be honest.”
Atsushi shrugged. It was true. “But damn, I didn’t expect how much you would mean to me..” He gripped Atsushi’s hand tighter, looking sincerely at him.
“I always thought that I already had a plan in life—“ he paused, “that I’d probably end it all after accomplishing what I wanted. But when you came, I came to realize that there was something worth living— something to hold onto.” Atsushi gulped, saving his tears for later. Just hearing this from Dazai himself made him an emotional wreck.
“I was falling, Atsushi. Falling into a deep hole that I thought I would’ve never escaped…” He kissed Atsushi’s hand lovingly. “Yet, you—you gave me life. You were that last strand pulling me up from the pit.”
He took a deep breath. “I ignored my feelings, at first. Thinking that it’d be better gone because I know that everyone I care about leaves…. but..
“But when you showed up, you gave me assurance. You made me believe that I still had a chance at love and life. Remember when Atlas kidnapped you?” He asked, turning to Atsushi.
Atsushi nodded. “When he did, my heart went insane. The thought of losing you made me feel an emotion I never thought that I would’ve felt again. I couldn’t stand to see you leave me. I can’t picture my life without you,
“You changed my life, Atsushi. I always thought that you needed me. But it seems like its reversed,” by now, Atsushi was crying.
“You’re the best thing I never knew I needed.”
And somehow, Atsushi preferred that over I love you.
Dazai stood up along with Atsushi. This time, Atsushi hugged him so tight that he practically jumped on Dazai. “I love you too, Dazai.” he whispered to Dazai’s ear.Just right on time, the sun was now setting. The lights on the rooftop were on, and it was just perfect.
A few moments after, they were now sitting down. “Open the gift, Atsushi.” Dazai pointed to the package that Atsushi had the whole time.
“W-what? This is mine?” Dazai nodded. “Of course. It’s from me.”
Atsushi slowly opened the package. Dazai looked at him with a smile. He loved Atsushi, he really did. And he didn’t know why he had to deny his feelings; maybe he was also scared that Atsushi would reject him. But, here they were, in the moonlight, romantic as ever. Who would’ve thought?
“Oh my god,” Atsushi got the gift out of the box. The gift was a small figurine of them as Charles and Amelia. It looked realistic; and Atsushi was amazed. He saw how the one who made this really put in the details, each and everything. From Amelia’s hair to Charles’ suit. Everything looked perfect.
“Push that button,” Dazai pointed to the lower part of the said figurine. There was a circular box underneath the two figures, painted in vintage flowers. Atsushi pressed it, and the figurines started dancing. The song started playing.
“This song…” Atsushi brought a hand to his mouth, clearly freaking out over the present.
Dazai intertwined his hand with Atsushi’s. “It’s the music box version of the song we danced to that night.”
“I…” Atsushi looked at Dazai and put the gift down. “Thank you, Dazai. I love it so much,” he confessed. “But who made this?”
“Oh? Hera made that. Turns out, she’s an expert with figurines and such.”Atsushi laughed lightly.
Dazai stood up, “Speaking of dances..” he offered a hand to Atsushi.
“Can I have this dance, my beloved?”And god, Atsushi swore he fell in love with Dazai again when he said that. He looked handsome as ever. How blessed was he to have someone like Dazai?
“Of course,” Atsushi gladly took his hand and stood up.
Dazai smiled, “Now..” he turned around. “Kunikida, sounds please!”
Atsushi jumped in surprise. “Kunikida?!”
“Stop ordering me around, stupid!” Out of a sudden, a wild Kunikida appeared behind the door. He tore a piece of paper and brought out an iPad. Within a second, the speakers on the rooftop were playing the familiar song Atsushi loved.
“B-but..” Atsushi looked at Dazai, his voice a whisper. “He’s here..” he said a bit shyly.
“Hm? Are you nervous because of Kunikida?” Atsushi nodded.
“Well then… Everyone, get out of your hiding places! Atsushi’s nervous because of Kunikida.”Atsushi looked around, only to see literally everyone from ADA entering from the door.
“That’s not what I meant!” He defended, only more nervous.
“Oh come on, you weren’t nervous when you danced in front of more than two hundred people.” Dazai teased.
“B-but this is differe—“
Dazai shushed him, guiding him slowly to the song. They waltz around the clear space, their movements perfectly syncing to one another. Dazai’s eyes never left Atsushi’s as he guided him to the dance. Atsushi danced gracefully, not even realizing that everyone was staring in awe.
“You know, the song actually states a sad ending..” Kenji whispered to Tanizaki, who laughed. “Let them enjoy, bro. Just look at them,” he pointed to the couple.
Meanwhile the president sipped his tea, “Ah.. to be young and in love,” he mumbled and looked at the happy couple.
And they did look so happy. Kyouka was munching on a cake, glad to see that her plan worked. Elizabeth was actually the one who owns the café, and Hera being the one who made the gift. Kyouka was thankful for them, that they helped her with Atsushi. It was worth it to see her best friend smile.
The song ended, and the couple was just looking at each other.
“I love you so much.” Dazai pressed his forehead against Atsushi’s. “I know,”
Ranpo crossed his arms as he chewed another piece of popcorn. “Just kiss already!”
Yosano raised an eyebrow. “Eh?! Where’d you get that?!” She asked, taking a bite of the popcorn herself.
Atsushi laughed. “You heard them, my prince.” He teased, and Dazai just smirked at the remark.
He pulled in Atsushi for a passionate kiss, and they danced the night away.
The End.
