Chapter 1: Are you ready, bakers?

Chapter Text

Present Mic and Midnight, arms linked and giggling over who-knows-what, walk out onto the large stage and brightly address the audience.

Present Mic is the first to address the large audience gathered in the UA stadium, “Hey there listeners! Welcome to our first event of the UA festival: the UA bake-off! Twenty students from one of our first-year hero courses will be competing against one another in a series of bakes to see who the top baker will be! Yeaaaaah!”

“Class 1-A has chosen this year to compete in a bake-off due to their extremely competitive nature and surprising love of the Great British Bake Off series. Upon completion of the event, all leftover bakes will be on display for samples for those wishing (and brave enough) to try the students’ creations!” Midnight adds.

The stadium erupts in murmurs and mutters about the ill-fortune of class 1-A. Between multiple villain attacks and a kidnapping, the problem class has definitely created a reputation for themselves.

“These heroes-in-training have an unreasonable amount of experience whipping up plans and tactics against villain attacks for first-year students, but now we’re going to see how adept they are at whipping up some tasty treats! Now, let’s welcome our two judges to the stage… All Might and Eraserhead! Yeaaaaah!”

The pair of heroes walk out onto the stage towards Midnight and Mic. Aizawa sports his well-worn yellow sleeping bag while All Might struts out in his true form, smiling and waving at the gathered crowd. Aizawa promptly parks himself in a chair next to Present Mic, leaving All Might to take the microphone from Midnight and greet the spectators for them both.

Trailing in behind the two judges are the twenty students participating in the bake-off. Instead of ascending the stairs to the stage, they take their places at assigned baking stations set up in the arena, which has conveniently been transformed into a larger version of the iconic tent from the British television show.

Set up in a 4x5 grid, the students file into the baking stations the same way they file into their assigned class seats, with the front row consisting of Hagakure, Shouji, Ojiro and Aoyoma followed by Bakugou, Jirou, Kaminari and Ashido. The third row contains Midorya, Sero, Kirishima and Asui, behind which are Shinso, Tokoyami, Kouda and Iida. Bringing up the final row are Yaoyorozu, Todoroki, Sato and Uraraka.

All Might finishes addressing the audience with his classic call and response, “Go Beyond!” followed by a deafening “PLUS ULTRA!” from the spectators and baking contestants.
Handing the microphone over to his tired counterpart, All Might makes his way down to the bakers and lets Aizawa briefly explain the first challenge to the stadium.

“Okay, so since we obviously don’t have time to spread this competition out over days, we’re going to eliminate fifteen contestants in this first round so we aren’t stuck here forever” Aizawa practically yawns into the microphone. “The students will have 60 minutes to create the pared-down recipe being provided them now by All-Might. They are being asked to make classic scones with a personal twist. They are being given a simple scone recipe as a base for the challenge, however, they need to attempt to impress us by adding in their own flavors if they want to not get expelled from the competition.”

Down at the baking stations, the students are talking amongst themselves before the challenge begins. Midorya is practically bouncing in place as he word-vomits different flavor ideas to Shinso sitting behind him, who just looks tired and bored. Kaminari and Ashido look like they’re frantically trying to decide on an idea, Iida is turned around discussing something with Uraraka, Todoroki looks as stoic as ever, and everyone else just looks excited to start while Bakugou screams “I’m going to murder you extras with my superior skills! None of you losers are going to beat me!”

Aizawa joins All Might down among the students and passes out the recipe cards while Present Mic and Midnight get ready to commentate from the stage to keep the audience updated on the bakers’ progress.

All Might gets everyone’s attention and begins, “Alright young heroes! I hope you’re all ready! Three…”

Aizawa, stony-faced and monotone counts, “two…”

“One! BAAAAAAAAAAKE” exclaims Present Mic.
