Work Text:
If Haru had less self-control he would have groaned aloud the moment he saw, out of the corner of his eye, Daisuke entering the gym. The rich boy playing detective probably had a full-on Rizap facility in his third basement, complete with a pretty trainer or two, so there was only one reason he’d be strolling into a cheap twenty-four-hour gym favored by police and salarymen.
Haru’s opponent, one of the Ginza patrol officers, attempted to take advantage of his brief distraction. A hand darted out to try and grab onto his shirt, but Haru threw his shoulder back to avoid the grip. From there, it was a quick throw. One hand on a wrist, the other on a shoulder, and Haru’s partner was on the floor before Daisuke had finished striding up to the boxing ring they had been using, as it was the only area with padded flooring.
The slow clap he received from Daisuke was grating.
Haru helped his partner up, smiling at a compliment for his quick reaction time. “Next time, yeah?” he said, bowing his head before the other climbed out of the ring, then finally turning his eyes toward Daisuke. “What?”
“We have a case.”
“I’m off the clock, Kambe,” Haru replied, grabbing his water bottle and swallowing a mouthful.
“My understanding was that you were on call.”
“Not for you. And since you’re asking me, while my work phone remains quiet, I’m gonna say no.”
Daisuke smirked, shrugging his shoulders. “If you’re so determined to let criminals go free, what was your motivation in becoming a detective?”
“My motivations don’t involve getting thrown off a bridge or gassed from a Black Hawk because my so-called partner wants to play with his new toys.”
“I can only claim partial responsibility for the first one,” Daisuke said, waving a hand in dismissal. “Perhaps you should work on your upper body training.”
Haru would gladly work on his upper-body training, if only it resulted in the opportunity to chuck the pretty rich boy off a bridge at some point in the very near future. “Come up here and I’ll happily demonstrate the extent of my upper-body training.”
He did not expect Daisuke’s cocky grin to spread. A moment later, Daisuke was climbing up and shrugging off his suit jacket. “If I win, will you join me, Inspector Kato?”
“If you win, I’ll go wherever you want,” Haru scoffed, shaking out his wrists and flexing his fingers. “First one to hit the floor?”
“How about we start and see how it goes?” Daisuke proposed, undoing his tie and unbuttoning his vest. He stripped down to his undershirt, folding his clothes and placing them neatly off to the side.
The instant the button-up came off, Haru wondered if he might have put his foot in his mouth, because Daisuke’s bare arms turned out to be nothing to laugh at, and when he turned around to face Haru, his white tank top was stretched across an unfairly built chest. With that body and those muscles, Daisuke could have easily pulled Haru up when he’d been dangling off the bridge, the fucking asshole. Well, all the more reason to look forward to locking his legs around that handsome face and watching that damn smirk get wiped off.
“What, you’re not gonna take off your pants, too?” Haru asked as Daisuke took a stance near the center of the ring. “They might get wrinkled.”
“To ensure that there are no unsightly lines in my suits, I wear a type of underwear that I feel might make you uncomfortable,” Daisuke stated, his tone flat. “Unless you were hoping for a peek?”
Haru wrinkled his nose in response, even as his mind flooded with visions of what Daisuke was implying. A thong? Jockstrap? Haru had seen the way those suit pants hugged his ass, there was plenty there to show. This wasn’t sumo, though. Haru did not need to grab a handful of bare Daisuke buttocks. “No thanks.”
“Then this will do.”
They hadn’t even started yet, but their presence together was already drawing curious looks from those on the force. As if Haru needed any more motivation to put Daisuke in his place. He was looking forward to pinning Daisuke to the floor, doubting that his souped-up Alexa could help him—
The first punch came so quickly that Haru did not have time to react. Daisuke’s fist connected with the center of Haru’s chest and knocked the air from his lungs, sending him back by a staggered step. Fucking hell, that had actually hurt. Daisuke stood, his hands up defending his face in a boxing stance, his weight on the balls of his feet. So he knew what he was doing. Good. Haru would have been disappointed if it was all money and tech and no actual bite behind that pristine exterior.
Taking a deep, slow breath, Haru recentered himself and waited for the next punch. It came just as fast, like a flash of lightning, but Haru was ready for it that time. He blocked with his forearm, shifting forward to knock out Daisuke’s legs—except Daisuke followed immediately with a right hook, nearly clipping Haru’s jaw. Haru jerked away from it, his eyes flickering to check which way Daisuke was leaning. Right. Fantastic.
Haru sidestepped, seizing a grip above Daisuke’s waist and shoulder, jerking him back. As soon as his weight shifted, Haru swept his leg out, catching Daisuke behind the knee. He buckled, his back hitting the mat with a definitive smack. The triumphant smile Haru cast down at him lasted not but a moment.
From his position on the floor, Daisuke snapped up at the waist and kicked out Haru’s ankles, dragging him down with fingers curled into the waistline of Haru’s sweats. Haru shoved himself forward as he fell, jumping over Daisuke and rolling them across the padded mats of the ring. For a split second, he managed to get himself in an upper position, pressing half of his body down onto Daisuke’s, but then an elbow came down on his sternum, a leg hooking in around his and holding him down. Haru threw out an arm, keeping Daisuke pinned with his own elbow at the hollow of Daisuke’s throat.
There was a pause, a short lull as they both caught their breath. Daisuke’s chest rose and dropped against Haru’s arm with a noticeably increased rhythm, even if his smug expression remained largely unchanged. Haru made the mistake of letting his gaze linger on Daisuke’s parted and panting lips, barely regretting it when moments later he was flipped, landing heavily on his hip. Oh, that was going to bruise.
Haru took advantage of the momentum, throwing Daisuke over him and clamoring onto his partner. Daisuke was winded and it bought Haru the second he needed to grapple his arms into an immobile position, straddling Daisuke with his shins putting pressure at Daisuke’s knees to keep him from getting leverage. “Had enough yet, Kambe?”
“I’m simply pleased that you appear to want to be on top this time,” Daisuke replied, punctuating the line with a cool smirk. He maneuvered one of his legs loose and gracefully hitched it up, pressing his thigh firmly and purposefully against Haru’s groin.
Heat flushed through Haru, pooling color on his cheeks and the tips of his ears. His fingers curled into Daisuke’s shirt and, when Daisuke failed to buck him off with a thrust of his hips, Haru pulled his arm back and slammed down a punch.
Daisuke tipped his head to the side, Haru’s knuckles hitting the mat a millimeter from the tip of his nose. “I was under the impression that strikes were not permitted in judo, Inspector.”
“This isn’t a competition. Besides, I doubt you’d follow the rules anyway,” Haru replied, his face still burning. He shoved himself off Daisuke, rising to his feet. “And if it were, you’d have lost twice. Thrown and pinned. Count your points, Kambe.”
Haru expected pushback, and yet Daisuke voiced no objections. Instead he stood up, his focus on straightening his clothing. “Fair. I am impressed with you, Kato. It would appear I’ve chosen myself a proper partner. Have a good rest of your evening.”
And just like that, Haru was left slack-jawed as Daisuke bowed out of the ring, taking his folded clothes with him. As he watched Daisuke redress and then depart, the air surrounding him collected and casual, Haru realized that—despite their matched and labored breathing—Daisuke had not broken a sweat. Fuck.
...Haru still claimed his victory, fair and square. They could settle it more definitely with a rematch later.
Bouncing his leg with impatience and indecision, Haru swore under his breath, grabbed his towel and his water bottle, and jumped out of the ring to chase after Daisuke. “Are you planning on telling me what the damn case is or not?!”
