Flowers for Fuyumi

Summary:

“They’re so beautiful, Sho! I’m sure mom will love them!”

“Actually,” Shouto pushed the pot towards his sister who blinked at him in confusion, “These are for you.”

Or: On Mother's Day Shouto thanks his big sister for always taking care of him.

Notes:

TikTok user incinders posted a cute video with basically this prompt and I got inspired.

Work Text:

Shouto heaved a sigh as he stepped in front of Fuyumi’s bedroom. The door was ajar and he could see her running around inside, tidying things up and getting ready.

“Fuyumi?”

She stopped on her tracks, facing her brother with a welcoming smile.

“Ah, Shouto! Come in!” She waved her hand.

The boy stepped inside. He had his hands hidden on his back which was just a little suspicious but she didn’t comment on it. Shouto took a look around the bedroom, he didn’t go into his sister’s room often, especially now that he spent most of his time at school but he still had some childhood memories of him escaping to her room in the middle of the night as he tried not to make any noise so his father wouldn’t find out.

Shouto admitted that he avoided coming home these days but today was a special one, so he was there.

“Are you going to see mom?”

She nodded. “Yes, are you coming as well?”

He replied with a nod of his own, tightening his fingers around the object he had been carrying around ever since he got there.

“Hey, Yumi?” She eyed him curiously when he spoke.

Shouto held his breath a little when he brought said object forward. He was holding a beautifully decorated pot with some exquisite flowers that had an exotic shape and delicate petals; they were light pink mixed with yellow details and sprinkled with darker dots in their center.

Fuyumi immediately recognized them as Peruvian lilies. These flowers were usually given to someone as a symbol of their gratitude and appreciation.

Shouto didn’t know why he was so nervous. He bit his lip and before gazing at his sister.

“They’re so beautiful, Sho!” She abandoned her bag on top of her bed so she could approach him and take a better look at the bouquet. “I’m sure mom will love them!”

“Actually,” he pushed the pot towards his sister who blinked at him in confusion, “These are for you.”

Fuyumi held the flowers and immediately felt her eyes stinging, but not from sadness.

“Shouto…”

“I know today is Mother’s Day but you’ve always taken care of us and made sure even things sucked a lot less than they actually did, especially when mom was sent to the hospital so I wanted to… I wanted to thank you, sis.” He scratched his flushed cheek with his index finger, tilting his face slightly to the side.

Fuyumi brought her nose close to the plants, inhaling their sweet fragrance and closing her eyes as she did so, smiling radiantly. She admired them for a few more seconds before finding a special place on her windowsill, so that they could always receive the sunlight and remain healthy.

When she was done, she approached her little brother and pulled him into a tight hug.

“I’m so happy. Thank you so much, little brother! Did you pick them yourself?”

Shouto shook his head.

“No… Yaoyorozu helped me pick them as well as the ones I bought for mom.”

“You’ve made quite a few good friends at school, haven’t you?”

She did sound like a proud mother when she said things like that.

He shrugged. “I suppose,” he agreed still a little flushed but he had the tiniest hint of a smile gracing his features.

“Go get your present for mom then, so we can go.”

She couldn’t help but smile as she watched her brother sprint to his room. Shouto had grown so much, he’d become so strong yet she would always see him as her little brother.
