Work Text:
June was quickly approaching, meaning the local spots would soon be filled with tourists. The influx of new people in Napoli also meant that you would be seeing less of your lover, Risotto Nero. You knew of the man’s occupation and what he got himself into on a daily basis, yet you weren't surprised. Unfortunately, the mafia still had power and control of Italia so you knew you would eventually cross paths with someone who was directly involved. Now, did you ever think you would date that type of man? Of course not, but you couldn’t stop your heart from loving him. Risotto, while never being upfront about it, also loved your and tried his best to see you as much as he could.
Every month they would make the effort to go on a date at least twice, taking turns, and this time it fell onto you to set up the date. They never tried to outdo each other, letting them enjoy each date for what it was and the other’s presence. This time it was different, it had to be special. Their one year anniversary was today and you knew it had to be memorable. You already had the whole date planned out, it would be more than special dinners like on previous anniversaries.
A ring from your phone broke your train of thought, forcing your eyes away from the mirror and onto the house phone. A grin came to your face seeing it was Risotto calling you. You picked the device up, bringing it to your ear as you glanced back to the mirror, “Are you ready?” you asked.
“I’m picking up a few things, but I am. Are you?” he asked, holding his phone up with his shoulder and he counted the liras. “I bet you’re looking at yourself in the mirror right now.”
You blushed a bit as you pressed the wooden hanger against your chest, attempting to envision yourself in the clothes you had picked out. “What makes you say that?”
“I know how you are.”
“Well --” you put the clothes down on the bed. “You’re right about that, but I’m almost done anyway. Are you going to pick me up?”
“Depends,” he responded, finally holding the phone back up normally as he began to walk down the streets. “Are you going to tell me where we are going?”
“I already told you it’s a surprise!” you huffed, shaking your head as you closed the window, pulling the curtains down before moving to change your clothes. “I’m not going to spoil it so you’re just going to have to wait until you see it. Did you finish all your business?”
“I did, don’t worry.”
“Good, then I’ll see you here soon.” Once you hung up, you tossed the phone onto the bed. Now that you didn’t need to juggle two things at once, you could get ready faster. The dress you were wearing was the one Risotto had gotten you earlier in the year but hadn’t worn very often. It was simple, a short white dress with flowers scattered across it. It was perfect now for summer, you just hoped the wind wasn’t too harsh tonight. You had to do so many different things before you knew it Risotto was ringing the doorbell to the apartment. “I’ll be right there!” you shouted before turning to the mirror. You looked over the dresser, your eyes darting around before you spotted a pin, grabbing it and moving it up to hold your dark hair into place. That was the final piece of the entire look.
Hearing the ring through the apartment again made you scurry towards the door, opening it to reveal the man on the other side. The sight honestly caught you off guard. While Risotto did change his clothes for their dates, it hadn’t been anything like this. He had even taken his hat off and everything. He looked sophisticated and proper, yet still retaining that sense of danger to him.
“You look good,” he said, breaking the silence.
“You do too,” you responded with a small nod before your eyes lowered. You had been so captivated by your lover’s appearance you hadn’t even noticed the bouquet of flowers he had been holding. “Oh, my, Risotto,” your hand gently cupped the bright sunflower, letting your fingers gently brush against the petal. “They’re beautiful,” you said, glancing up for a second then looking back down to the white lilies and carnations that littered the bundle.
“I know sunflowers are you’re favorite, but they didn’t have them as a full bouquet,” he explained. “I’m sorry.”
“No, no, it’s fine, it’s amazing regardless,” you grinned, standing up straight and gently wrapped your arms around him. “Thank you.” you said, taking the flowers from his hand.
“Shall we go?” he asked, offering his hand to you.
“Of course,” you responded, taking the other’s larger hand, leading him outside. It was a short drive from your home to the location of where the date would be. The whole time, Risotto was trying to guess what it was or was complimenting your dress saying, crediting his tastes for it. Eventually, after several tries, he gave up and decided to simply wait and see, knowing that whatever it was he knew it was going to be nice.
The man knew today was special, so he went out of his way to get you a special and thoughtful gift. Although he had been struggling due to how little he was paid for his work, he had no problem splurging for you and getting you a gift. He owed you his life after all. If it had not been for you, Risotto was sure he would have been dead. His mind sometimes still thought back to the day they had met. It was supposed to have been a simple hit job, but their target had been a fellow stand user that rendered Risotto powerless. With several wounds, he laid in the empty alley, clutching the bloody injuries tightly as he watched Metallica appear in the streams that inevitably pooled around his body. Risotto never felt so closer to death, and just as he thought he was going to meet God, you appeared. Like an angel sent down from the heavens to help him. As you nursed him back to health, he slowly fell in love with you. While Risotto was weary and never wanted to admit what he was, he couldn’t handle lying to you and explained what had happened and then later asked you out on a date. At the time, you weren't sure what to make of the situation, but you gave it a chance and now here they were, enjoying their anniversary together.
“We’re going to the beach?” he asked, cocking his head a bit as he caught sight of the ocean.
“Not just the beach, but you’re getting there,” you hummed, parking the vehicle and getting out. Together, they strolled down the beach, letting the ocean breeze hit them as they walked through the sand. Heels in one hand, holding Risotto’s with the other as you looked to the sun that was beginning to set. “You look really nice with the sun hitting you,” you said. “You should wear your hat less.”
“I like my hat,” he responded, shaking his head as he looked down at you. “I thought you liked it too.”
“I do like it, but I like looking at your face more,” you giggled.
“Well . . .” he started, letting his discolored eyes take in your smile before he looked to the waves that were coming back up. “Alright, if you like it then I’ll wear it less,” he nodded. “I like you with your hair down like that, it’s cute,” he complimented.
Your hand moved up to your head, your fingers gently touching the dark strands and the pin before grinning wider. “You’re complimenting me now too? Wow, you are a new man.”
“You know I’m not good with that stuff,” he sighed, stopping in his tracks to pull you close. “I’d rather do this,” his free hand went up to gently cup your cheek, bringing their lips in close to press against each other. The ocean waves just barely reached them as the breeze seemed to die down a bit. Time seemed to stop whenever he bent down to kiss you. It went on for a few moments as Risotto didn’t want to stop the contact, wanting to continue into the night, but you managed to stop him.
“We can do this later into the night,” you winked as your hands hooked around the white-collar, adjusting the flaps so they were normal again.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
They continued their stroll down the beach, making small conversations along the way until they reached the pier. You told your lover to wait near the gate before you spoke the man behind the booth. “Boat 5 please,”
“That boat’s reserved, signora.”
“I was the one that reserved it,” you said, “I’m (Y/N).”
The man nodded, turning around the grab the key on the wall, sliding it over the wooden deck. “Enjoy your night, just be sure to bring the boat back in before midnight.”
“I will don’t worry.” you said, quickly joining Risotto’s side, holding the key up for him to see.
“You rented a boat for us and everything?” he asked, chuckling slightly as he pushed the metal gate open, allowing them to walk onto the pier. “I’m impressed, caro.”
“There’s more, you’ll see,” you responded, walking down the wooden deck to find the white boat. The sun was on the verge of setting, casting an orange hue over the ship as you pulled him down the aisle. At the end of the ship was a table with a black cloth set over it, a candle in the middle, and a bottle of wine beside it.
“You did all of this?”
“Ah, I can’t take all the credit, I had some help.”
“Oh really? From who?”
“You’ll see him in just a second, don’t worry,” you said, going over to the table, gesturing Risotto to follow. “You’re not going to have dinner standing up, are you?” you asked, sitting down.
The Sicilian shook his head, following the other to the table and sitting on the opposite end, his head moving around to take in the ship. It had been nicely decorated, no doubt for this exact moment. There were candles all over the place and a few flowers here and there. A distinct smell of food willed the air, overpowering the smell of the salty ocean.
“Buona serata,” said a familiar blond, coming out from a hallway. “(Y/N), Risotto,” he said, nodding to each as he grabbed the bottle of wine. “Enjoy this while you wait for your dinner,” he said, pouring the dark liquid into clear glasses, placing them onto the table. “It’ll be here shortly, so don’t drink it all of it.” he gave the white-haired man a look before taking his leave.
He stared at the man, watching Prosciutto leave before he held back a laugh. “How much are you paying him to do this?”
“You don’t even want to know,” you waved off his words as your hand hooked around the glass. “Anyway, he won’t bother us too much so it doesn’t matter.”
The night continued on, their conversations only getting paused whenever Prosciutto brought in another course for them to eat. You had made a joke about whether the food was actually good or not to which he bluntly responded, “Are you doubting my skills?”
“Of course not,” you had responded.
“Good, because no one else could’ve done this,” he said, adjusting his rolled-up sleeves, “Apparently no one taught these men how to cook.” he scoffed, throwing his hand up frustrated before leaving back to the kitchen.
“Is he wrong?”
“About what?” asked Risotto, beginning to eat the food that had been put in front of him.
“That none of you can cook.”
“Well -- I’m sure someone else can cook,” he shrugged, “Like Pesci, I’m sure he cooks in his free time,” he circled his fork around towards you. “I bet that’s who’s actually cooking.”
“Nope, it’s all Pros,” you shook your head.
Risotto looked over to you than to his meal then back up to his lover. “You’ve been getting close to them, haven’t you?”
“Your squad?” you asked him before he nodded. “Well, I’ve been speaking to a few of them. Sometimes they help me here and there, it’s more out of respect if anything. I know how it is, trust me.”
There weren’t any doubts that you had been fooling around with another La Squadra member, but he did want to know if things were getting better. When Risotto had first mentioned his relationship with you, almost all of them freaked out and told him it would be dangerous. Now, however, it seemed that was being fixed and they grew to like you. “You’ve been with other mafiosos, right?”
“Not exactly been with one, but my brother had been involved so I at least know how they act,” you said, pausing to look over to the man. “I love you, Risotto. Don’t forget that.”
“I could never.”
Once the dinner was finished, you got up from the table, moving over to the man, pressing a small kiss to his cheek before grabbing his hand. “We can admire the stars better on the upper deck,” you said with a smile. Risotto nodded, following you up the stairs of the boat and on a small couch that rested behind the guard rail. He sat down on the couch, letting his eyes wander up to the night sky as you left his side. Your eyes darted around the deck before you spotted what you had been looking for; a black box with a ribbon wrapped around it and a card underneath it stating ‘For Risotto.’
“Amore mio,” you spoke, getting the man’s attention as you sat down beside him. “This is for you. Happy Anniversary.”
Risotto’s red eyes slightly widened at the sight of the black box; he slowly reached over, taking the box from you and pulling it onto his lap, letting his fingers feel over the box. “Anto, you didn’t have to get me anything,” he responded, shaking his head.
“You know I always get you something,” you said, waving off his words before you tapped the box. “Open it though, I know you’ll love it.”
“I’m sure you’re right,” he said, leaning over to press a short kiss to your forehead before turning back to the box. The Sicilian pulled on the white ribbon, letting it come undone before his fingers pressed against the ends of the box, pushing it up until the content inside was revealed. A black long coat like the one he wore daily, a pair of designer black shoes, and all the way at the bottom a photo of them that was framed. His hand gently grasped the wooden frame, pulling it up and out of the box so he could see it better. It was the picture from their first time at the beach together. You were just as beautiful as you were a year ago. “Thank you, (Y/N),” he said, putting the box beside him before reaching over and pulling you close, “I love all of it.” he brought your face in close to his, kissing you once more. Unlike their kiss earlier in the day, it hadn’t lasted long as he had his own preset to give. “I got you something as well,” he added, moving his hand into his blazer, pulling out a long yet thin box.
“Now you really didn’t have to do this,” you responded, taking the gift, beginning to pull the lid off the item. The Italian’s dark eyes sparkled as you spotted the silver and gold necklace that had been put inside the box. Slowly, you plucked the jewelry piece out, letting it dangle from your fingers as you looked over it. Small diamonds lined the metal chains and at the bottom were two hearts that interlocked. “Risotto, this must have been so expensive.” you wearily added.
“It doesn’t matter,” he said, taking the ends of the necklace, “You deserve it,” He hooked the necklace around your neck, clipping and letting it hang. “Ti amo così tanto, angelo mio.”
