"I'm ba~ack"
"Oh, welcome home. Is the car okay?"
"Might have been a problem if I'd been an hour later. The storm's really strong..."
The offshore typhoon was causing a heavy storm. Transportation was being suspended, so Yuu had come home early.
Since she had the day off, Touko had already made preparations - candles, a radio, emergency food and the like. The storm shutters were already closed, so she couldn't tell how dark it was outside - only hear the sounds of wind and rain.
While Yuu washed up, Touko poured the two of them some cocoa and made her way to their sofa.
There was a sudden crack of thunder, and Yuu yelped.
Touko had been surprised to learn that Yuu wasn't good with thunderstorms - unexpected, given that Yuu usually didn't scare easily, but apparently she'd been bad with them since childhood. She felt a bit bad about it, but Touko couldn't help but feel lucky to have the opportunity to spoil Yuu for once.
"Hey, c'mere Yuu."
"... okay."
Ever reliable, Yuu was usually the one who took the lead between them, so having the younger girl obediently slip into her arms was unbearable cute.
Touko squeezed her tight.
She traced her lover's body - her shapely head, her fluffy hair, her slender but muscled upper body. Her shoulder blades that stuck out a bit like wings, perhaps a remnant of her softball days. The muscles along her spine. All of her beloved Yuu.
Yuu's expression softened. "Jeez, you're tickling me."
There was another crack of thunder, and Yuu started. Then, as she began to tremble-
The lights suddenly went out.
"Eh, ah, a blackout?"
"Oh darn. I guess a power station must have been hit or something."
Despite her earlier fear, Yuu was as reliable as ever about the blackout. Touko felt calm replace her momentary unease.
"Good thing you prepared the candles. Let's get them lit - you aren't so good with the dark, after all," Yuu smiled faintly.
Touko lit the proffered candles with a match.
Their room wasn't that large, so a few candles were enough to illumnate it. The small and gentle lights gave off a warm sensation.
They put on the radio to see if there were any annoucements.
"......a blackout is occuring in the aforementioned districts. Restoration of power is expected to occur after three hours..."
"Thank goodness, you can manage 3 hours, right Touko?" Yuu teased.
"Stop treating me like a kid! I'm fine, jeez."
Despite being the elder, Touko had always relied on Yuu. At one point she had tried to act as the senpai, but Yuu had told her that wasn't necessary.
The two of them might change, their relationship might change, but Touko believed they would choose to remain together.
"Since we've got the news, how about we put some music on?"
Yuu fiddled with the radio, and it began to produce the sound of jazz.
"... that was 'Night and Day'. Today's music is a Frank Sinatra collection. He was a famous jazz singer from the previous century. Some of our listeners might be in the affected areas, so we hope that this might ease your night a little."
Strangers in the night
...
Something in your smile
Was so exciting
A pleasant baritone enveloped the room.
The candles around the room illuminated Yuu, casting soft shadows across the room. In the orange light, her expression was kind and her eyes calm. Touko could see overflowing love on that face, and knew she looked the same.
She was no stranger to the happiness brought by the love of her beloved - a sweet sensation that gripped the heart.
"C'mere, Touko."
Probably seeing right through her, Yuu held out a hand. Taking the invitation, Touko was pulled into an embrace, Yuu's left hand sliding around her waist. She joined her left hand with Yuu's right, and placed her other hand on Yuu's shoulder.
Yuu pulled her closer, till their cheeks were touching. Touko's nose was filled with her relaxing scent.
"Hey Yuu," Touko whispered, like she was telling a secret.
"Wha~t?"
"Wanna know something lovable I just discovered about you?"
"Oh? What is it?" Yuu giggled, amused.
"I love the shape of the corner of your eye."
"The heck? Who else would even pay attention to that?"
"That's fine, isn't it? No-one else needs to know."
Yuu smiled, bemused.
A familiar song began to play on the radio.
Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Yuu began to dance with small steps, swaying back and forth. Touko moved with her.
When she spun to the right, Yuu followed along. The candles flickered as they danced, the room's soft shadows changing shape.
In highschool, in university, in the present - Yuu had walked beside her, their hands joined as they faced the future. Touko wondered how far their dace would take them.
Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forever more
"Touko,"
"Wha~at?"
"Make sure you live longer than me, okay?"
"Hey, that's what I wanted to say."
They smiled. If their dance had to end, Touko thought, then she'd like if was together. Neither would be able to dance well alone.
In other words, please be true
"Yuu, do you know how this song ends?"
Yuu shook her head.
Touko whispered softly, right into her ear,
"I love you."
She kissed Yuu softly.
The wind and rain were beyond the walls.
In here, it was just her and Yuu and the sound of their hearts beating, and she needed nothing more.
