Work Text:
Despite the sweltering summer’s sun having been laid to rest hours before, Jeongguk still finds sweating collecting against his forehead and heaving an uncomfortable sigh. Summers in Seoul have always been somewhat hellish, something Jeongguk can testify to having spent six of them here after moving from Busan to attend college in Seoul. However, this year seems different — hotter — the nob turned up a notch, as the apartment Jeongguk and his boyfriend, Hoseok, recently moved into absorbs sunlight like a sponge and has a broken air conditioner.
Jeongguk frowns, trying to rid his clouded mind of the broken A.C because the thought, if possible, makes him feel even hotter. The laborious day Jeongguk’s body been through begins to shut down, fatigue weighing heavily against his eyelids as his breath slows.
He starts to feel himself drifting, further and further away, his dreams on the tip of tongue before—
“Ah! “
His eyes shoot open.
The ear piercing scream alarms him to awaken, a pang of fear instantaneously shooting through the entirety of his body as he recognizes the helm as none other than his boyfriend, Hoseok. He assumes the worst, assumes that someone’s broken into the apartment dead at night and Hoseok’s face to face with the assailant. The image terrifies him, shocks him to his feet and he’s off speeding, adrenaline kicking in as he swiftly grabs some object of use and rushes to the nearby lounge.
Upon his immediate arrival, collector’s lightsaber in hand and confused. Confused not because of the slumber he was under seconds ago, but because there is no intruder, no large figure hovering over Hoseok as he cowers in fear for his life.
There’s just Hoseok.
And, not to sound disappointed or displeased by his presence, but he’s just there, limbs bundled up together with his phone in hand. His head turns towards Jeongguk, pout evident in the dim lighting of the room and . . . tears?
Jeongguk blinks. Maybe he is dreaming.
Maybe he didn’t wake to the sounds of Hoseok screaming, maybe he did manage to fall asleep despite the humid weather and find himself in a dream because there’s no other reason for this to be happening, no reason for Hoseok’s bright eyes to be welling with tears, right?
“Jeonggukie, look at this!” Hoseok exclaims, pout still settled into his lips as he wills himself to get up from his place against the cream couch, hobbling over to Jeongguk before throwing an arm over his shoulder and showing him what disturbed to the point of tears.
The video Hoseok shows Jeongguk is no longer than 20 seconds, give or take, and within those seconds consists of the image of a dog, a shiba inu, who upon his owner holding out his hand, sheepishly holds out his own paw as his gaze averts from place to place. Every action the dog makes within the video is endearingly coy, gestures shy and entirely wholesome and when the video ends, Hoseok turns to Jeongguk, blinking away the tears in his eyes and says, “I can’t take this anymore, we need to get a shiba inu, as in yesterday.”
His body affectionately curls into Jeongguk’s like many times before, face buried into the crook of Jeongguk’s nose as he softly sniffs and embraces Jeongguk, who is still frozen in place. An airy snort blows past Jeongguk lips, the some lips that lift with fondness at their ends as Jeongguk wraps his arms around Hoseok and hums in agreement.
Time elapses and when Hoseok’s content with the comfort of Jeongguk’s arms, the same heart shaped smile filled with an abundance of joy & overflowing love that Jeongguk fell in love with years ago lights up his face for the briefest moment all before his eyebrows furrow and his face contours in confusion.
“What’s with the lightsaber?”
And Jeongguk just chuckles, fondness unfazed as he leans forward and mumbles a, “Nothing,” against Hoseok’s forehead before he gives it a kiss and convinces Hoseok to come to bed with the promise that by the same time tomorrow, they’ll have the very same shiba inu pattering around their apartment.
