Chapter Text

Jun scrubbed the towel over his hair. The strands were still dripping water onto his shoulders. Onto the borrowed t-shirt he was wearing.

And Tetsu wasn’t that much taller--eleven centimetres was nothing really--but Jun still felt like he was swimming in the shirt. The fabric draped loosely around him. The stretched out collar dipping low enough to expose his collar bone. Jun rotated his shoulder trying to get the shirt to sit right.

It was a futile gesture.

Jun sighed as he looked out of the window. It wasn’t much of a view. There was nothing to look at but the tall impersonal buildings across the street. Made more gloomy by the weather.

They had gotten caught in the rain on their way back from lunch. Neither of them had brought umbrellas and they had sprinted from awning to awning all the way back to Tetsu’s apartment. Despite their best efforts, they had both been soaked to the bone by the time they made it back.

Jun was rubbing his arms and trying to warm up his core. His teeth chattered nonetheless as they climbed the stairs. Even Tetsu with his stoic face and tough it out attitude couldn’t hide the fact that he was miserable.

This wasn’t exactly how Jun envisioned his spring break trip to Tokyo going.

What he had been envisioning...ah...well...Jun didn’t really want to think about that either. No use getting his hopes up. It was nice enough to be back in Tokyo--despite the weather. And it was nice enough to be able to catch up with friends from High School.

Even if that friend was Yuuki Tetsuya. Especially if that friend was--

Tetsu shuffled out of his kitchen. Two cups of hot green tea in hand. He had changed into a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt. Both of which Jun was pretty sure he had owned back in High School.

Not that Jun paid all that much attention…

Jun dropped the towel so it hung around his neck and accepted one of the cups. He wrapped both hands around it. Trying to get as much warmth into his fingers as possible. He took a sip and let out a relieved groan.

“That’s good.”

Tetsu nodded in agreement.

For all of Tetsu’s strength and power on the baseball field and for all of his social awkwardness off of it, there was a subtle elegance to all of his movements. It was something Jun had learned to appreciate over the years.

It was a fact Jun was reminded of as he watched Tetsu sip at his own tea. He did so almost...delicately. It was a sight that warmed Jun’s heart almost as much as the tea itself.

“You’re supposed to meet up with Chris, right?”

“Yeah,” said Jun as he watched the raindrops slide down the window. “I let him know that I’d probably be late cause we got caught in the rain.”

Tetsu continued to drink his tea as he looked out across the street. And Jun thought that that was it. Except Tetsu added quietly, casually, as if it were nothing more than an afterthought--

“It’s still raining.”

And Jun almost choked on his tea.

“It is, isn’t it?” replied Jun, half coughing.

Tetsu made a vague gesture towards the window. “I’d hate for you to go back out into that.”

“Me too,” agreed Jun as he also made a vague gesture towards the window. “I almost drowned out there.”

“I’m sure Chris will understand.”

“He’s very understanding.”

Tetsu nodded. Short and sharp as if that settled things.

And maybe it had? Jun was honestly not really sure what was going on at this point and was a little scared to ask. Even more so when Tetsu set down his teacup on the dining room table and stepped into Jun’s space and reached up--

And pulled the towel from around his neck.

“More tea?”

Jun swallowed. “Sure. Thanks.”

Tetsu smiled back at him. “I’m glad you’re here, Jun.”

And Jun let out a startled laugh. “I’m glad to be here, Tetsu.”

Tetsu nodded again as if that confirmed something and at this point, Jun didn’t care if it did. He was glad to be here. In Tokyo. With Tetsu.

Tetsu tossed the towel over his shoulder and took back Jun’s teacup.

And as Jun watched Tetsu walk away he let the hope he had been holding back bubble over. Let himself feel his nervousness...and his excitement. Let himself really listen to the rapid beating of his heart.

Jun shook his head and laughed...because he could hardly believe it.

And maybe, just maybe, this weather wasn’t so gloomy after all.
