“Hopefully we’ll get some peace and quiet in the kitchen . . .”
Seth clutched the swaddled bundle to his chest and gently swayed the baby.
“That’s a good boy,” Seth exhaled in relief that his son had finally fallen asleep.
Just after Seth had relaxed, the door slammed open, and Luka entered the kitchen.
“Hey Seth!” the black-haired youth grinned.
“Shh!” Seth narrowed his eyes. “I just got him to sleep. I’m trying to give Alice a break, and every room in this house is too noisy!”
“Sorry,” said Luka. “I’ll be more quiet.”
He looked at the bundle in Seth’s arms. The baby’s head had a light dusting of blue hair, but Luka could not tell if the baby shared more features with his mother or father.
“Heyo!” Fenrir crashed the kitchen door to the wall. “It’s snack time!”
The room vibrated, and the jar-lined shelves rattled. The baby winced and burst into tears.
Seth’s venomous glared brought shivers to Fenrir’s spine. Fenrir had made his child cry.
“What is wrong with you?” The new father hissed.
Fenrir gulped, fearing for his life. “S-sorry!”
The black army had been on pins and needles around the protective father, and everyone knew to stay out of Seth’s way when he had the baby with him.
Seth exhaled furiously and shoved past Fenrir as he tried to console his wailing son.
“You’re okay,” Seth rubbed the back of the soft yellow onesie. “Those idiots just can’t stay quiet for two seconds.”
The baby started to calm down and settled against his father’s chest.
“That’s a good boy,” Seth smiled fondly; the previous fury in his eyes had swiftly evaporated.
He sat on the sofa near the fireplace in the sitting room.
“We’ll just rest here for a while so Mommy can have a nice nap upstairs. Daddy will just close his eyes for a second . . .”
Seth leaned back as he held the sleeping baby, hoping that the rowdier members of the black army would keep their distance. His brown eyes closed heavily, and soon both father and son were sleeping soundly.
Half an hour later, delicate footsteps navigated the corridor and paused in the sitting room.
“There they are,” Alice smiled, looking slightly more rested than she had earlier in the day.
She sat next to the sleepy pair and admired the features of her husband and child.
“My special boys,” her heart swelled with happiness.
Alice retrieved a quilt and covered Seth’s lap. She rested her head on his shoulder.
“I love both of you so much,” Alice closed her eyes briefly joining the moment of solitude.
When the baby woke up again, it was for his next feeding rather than from having been disturbed.
“Oh,” Seth’s brown eyes snapped open. “We’d better find your mama now!”
Alice’s breath tickled Seth’s cheek as she laughed. He grinned when he noticed his wife’s presence.
“No wonder I dreamed about an angel landing on my shoulder,” Seth gazed at Alice softly as he handed her the baby.
“I missed my boys,” she admitted.
“And we missed you.”
Seth gently brushed her blonde hair behind her shoulder as Alice unbuttoned the front of her dress. The baby at hungrily from her breast as his parents lovingly watched him.
“He’s growing so fast,” said Seth.
“Mmm-hmm,” said Alice. “He looks more like you every day.”
“I think his cute little nose is the same as yours, though,” Seth poked Alice’s nose fondly.
“Maybe the next one will look more like me,” said Alice.
“Next one?” Seth raised an intrigued brow.
“A-after he’s a bit bigger of course,” Alice blushed. “Maybe we can give him a little sister.”
Seth tilted his wife’s chin towards him and kissed her.
“That sounds like a lovely idea, my sweet Alice. I love you.”
“Love you, too.”
