Summary
It was dangerous, getting that close to another person. Maybe that was the reason it had worked so well with Rex and Cody—they were already as close as two people could be. No secrets, nothing to hide. The drift laid everything bare.
Someone else, someone unknown—someone who wasn’t Cody—felt like a betrayal. And picking that someone else felt like digging the knife further into the wound.

It took about another minute of staring the other down for Xiao the enchanter and Venti the witch to realize the more subtle implications of that option.
And then, even though they'd both been having their own internal debates throughout the entire interaction so far, and even though they were in fact drastically different people, Xiao and Venti had, in the same moment, the exact same thought:
“Oh, God. A roommate.”
In which Venti the witch tries his best to break Xiao's mysterious curse.
