Mitsuri shuffled from foot to foot impatiently as she stood outside her house. Shinobu had planned a date for the two of them, but had been extremely vague about the details, only instructing Mitsuri to be ready at noon so that Shinobu could pick her up.
Mitsuri continued shuffling her feet to burn off her nervous energy. She was excited, but she had no idea what Shinobu had in store for them. The mess of feelings swirled through her stomach like a whirlpool.
A low rumbling sounded in the distance. Mitsuri strained her ear to hear it. It slowly grew louder and louder, as if coming closer to Mitsuri. She could feel the rumbling in her chest now, reverberating through her body like the thumping of her heart.
Mitsuri looked down the street. She could make out a small figure in the distance, and as it drew closer she realized it was a person on a motorcycle.
No way. Did Shinobu really—
The motorcycle pulled up in front of her house. The rider turned off the engine and slid off the bike before taking their helmet off.
Sure enough, clad in a shiny, tight fitting leather jacket adorned with a butterfly pattern, equally tight fitting black leather pants, and combat boots, was Mitsuri’s incredibly sexy girlfriend.
Mitsuri gaped. She knew Shinobu had a motorcycle, but she had never actually seen her ride it before and, well… she realized that until that very moment she hadn’t really been living.
Shinobu took in Mitsuri’s expression and smirked. “Like what you see?” she teased.
Mitsuri blushed. “I-I’ve just, uh, never seen you on your motorcycle before. It’s, u-um…”
“Yes?” Shinobu said with a mischievous smile.
“Nothing! A-anyway, what are we doing for our date?”
“You’ll see in due time, my love. For now, put these on.”
Shinobu procured a helmet and leather jacket and handed them to Mitsuri. Mitsuri took them and stared at them, her mind scrambling to process what Shinobu was implying.
“Shinobu, don’t tell me we’re—”
Shinobu smiled and brought her hands together. “That’s right! We’re going to be taking the motorcycle! Don’t worry, I won’t drive too crazy~”
Mitsuri’s stomach churned. Although she was excited to ride on a motorcycle with Shinobu for the first time, the thought of being on a small vehicle going upwards of 60 miles per hour without a seatbelt and wearing minimal protection definitely made her nervous.
Shinobu must have noticed the worry in Mitsuri’s face, because her eyes softened and she took Mitsuri’s hands in hers.
“Don’t worry, Mitsuri. I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise.”
Mitsuri took a deep breath and nodded. Shinobu kept their hands intertwined as she led Mitsuri to the motorcycle. She climbed on and waited for Mitsuri to put on her helmet and jacket. Once she was fitted and ready, Mitsuri climbed on behind Shinobu.
“Make sure you hold on to me the entire time. Don’t be afraid to grab on tight.” Shinobu instructed.
Mitsuri nodded and wrapped her arms around Shinobu’s waist. Shinobu turned on the engine. Mitsuri could feel her cells vibrating along with the steady thrum of the engine.
“Let’s go.”
The engine revved, and they were off. The wind whipped through Mitsuri’s hair and stung the parts of her skin that were exposed. As they began to gain more speed, Mitsuri gripped Shinobu’s waist harder and brought their bodies even closer. She could feel the slight vibrations of Shinobu’s chest as she chuckled.
For the first few minutes, Mitsuri kept herself buried in Shinobu’s back, holding onto her as if her life depended on it (which it kind of did). She avoided looking at just how fast everything was passing by them and instead tried to focus on Shinobu’s slow, steady breathing in order to calm her nerves.
Finally, once she felt semi-relaxed, Mitsuri chanced a look at the scenery.
She was floored.
Trees and rocky outcroppings whizzed by them. The air felt crisp and clean as they passed through, and although she couldn’t see the view well, Mitsuri could tell they were going up some sort of mountain. With their dizzying speed and rapid increase in elevation, Mitsuri felt as though she were flying. She felt free. She felt alive.
“Shinobu, this is amazing!” Mitsuri exclaimed.
“Just wait. This is nothing.”
They continued driving up the mountain. Even with everything speeding by them, Mitsuri felt strangely at peace.
Finally, they reached a gravel turnout. They came to a halt, and Shinobu turned off the engine. She took off her helmet, her hair somehow still as impeccable as always, and turned around to face Mitsuri.
“We’re here.”
Mitsuri took off her own helmet and slipped off the motorcycle. She looked out over the mountain and gasped.
She could see all the houses and buildings and trees and cars as if they were a tiny little play set. The sky was a bright, blinding blue, almost completely clear except for a few cotton candy clouds that looked like they were painted on the sky. The sun bathed everything in a gentle golden light. The town, which normally seemed incredibly drab, was practically a piece of art from up here.
“Shinobu, this is beautiful.”
Shinobu smiled. “I thought you might like it. There’s even more, however.”
Mitsuri cocked her head in confusion. Shinobu shuffled through the bag attached to her motorcycle and brought out a few containers. She opened them, revealing stacks of sakura mochi and various flavors of dango.
Mitsuri’s eyes sparkled even brighter than the sun. “You brought all this too? I love you so much!”
Mitsuri reached out for the food, but Shinobu moved it away from her hands. She wagged her finger at Mitsuri.
“Ah, ah, Mitsuri. Don’t get too impatient.”
Mitsuri pouted in betrayal. Shinobu giggled as she took out a stick of dango from one of the containers.
“Say ‘ah.’”
Mitsuri blushed and opened her mouth.
“Ahhh.”
Shinobu brought the dango to Mitsuri’s mouth. Mitsuri took the entire stick in her mouth and ate everything in one bite. The sweet stickiness of the sauce and the savory chewiness of the dango itself mixed to form a perfect harmony of textures and flavors.
“Mmmm, this is delicious Shinobu!”
Shinobu smiled. She opened her mouth as if to speak but stopped.
“Hold on Mitsuri, you have a little sauce on your lips.”
“Eh, I do?! Where is it, I’ll—”
Shinobu captured Mitsuri’s lips in a soft kiss. She swept her tongue over Mitsuri’s lips before pulling back.
“You’re right, this is quite tasty.”
Mitsuri turned even pinker than her hair. She thought she might faint with all the blood rushing to her face. Shinobu smirked, clearly satisfied with the reaction she got.
“You’re so cute, Mitsuri.”
The two of them continued to eat and make conversation, discussing the most mundane yet most meaningful things. Soon they were out of food, and they sat together admiring the view in a comfortable silence.
Mitsuri took in the gentle, cool breeze, the lingering scent of the dango and mochi, the warm rays of sunlight bringing life to the earth, the breathtaking view, the calm comforting presence of her girlfriend, and she realized she was more content than she had ever been. She could live in this moment forever.
Mitsuri rested her head on Shinobu’s shoulder while intertwining their fingers together. Shinobu shifted and rested her head atop Mitsuri’s.
“Shinobu?”
“Hmm?”
“Let’s stay like this forever.”
Shinobu smiled and nestled herself closer to Mitsuri.
“Yeah. Let’s do that.”
