My Son's Secret Ambition

Summary:

With talks of a pride parade coming up, Bakugou figures it's time to come out to his dad and uncle. He's 99.9% sure everything'll be fine, but there's still that .1%...

“Dad, Mic-ji, I’m gay... Mic-ji, no! Don’t you fucking da—!”

“Hi, Gay, I’m Dad.”

Work Text:

Every once in awhile, UA allowed their students to return home for the weekend to visit family. No prompt, just important family time should the student want to visit. So, there Bakugou was that warm June afternoon, eating lunch that he prepared with his dad and uncle.

“Katsuki, I miss your cooking!” Present Mic sobbed as he scarfed down ramen. “You still make lunch for your dad every morning at the dorms; why not an extra bento for your favorite uncle!?”

“You two are grown-ass men who should be cooking for yourselves in the first place,” Bakugou bluntly deadpanned, slurping up his noodles. “Seriously, how the hell did you two keep yourselves alive before I came around?”

Aizawa only shrugged, not bothering with answering, while Present Mic just sheepishly smiled.

And last for our newscast this afternoon, a reminder of the pride parade taking place tomorrow at noon,” said the newscaster on the TV they left on. “Dozens of big-name LGBTQ+ heroes will be making an appearance during the event as well.”

“Oh yeah, that’s tomorrow,” Present Mic commented. “Guess that means traffic downtown.”

Bakugou frowned a bit at his uncle’s indifferent tone. “I mean, it’s important to celebrate this kinda shit. Momo-nee was actually… thinking of taking me tomorrow.”

“Oh?” Aizawa questioned.

Bakugou crossed his arms self-consciously. “I mean, why not?”

“Thought you didn’t like big, loud crowds.”

Bakugou scrunched up his face a bit. That remark was fair. “Still… it’s good to support shit…”

“Hey, that's great!" Present Mic said. "Glad that the younger generation is growing more and more open to the LGBTQ+ community.”

“I mean, yeah… It’d be weird if I didn’t… And homophobes can fuck off…”

Aizawa frowned a bit himself, concerned by his son’s sudden change in demeanor. One of Bakugou’s hands was using his chopsticks to pick at his stray noodles, the other began fiddling with the side of his shirt. “Katsuki, what’s on your mind?”

Bakugou went stiff. "Nothing…" he lied. He knew his dad knew he was lying too, hating how he could always see right through him. Stupid parental instincts mixed with highly trained hero perception.

Bakugou avoided his dad’s gaze, turning back to the news again. The reporters were interviewing an openly queer hero who was planning to attend tomorrow’s parade. It made him antsier, as if shaming him about his own openness. Or, lack of openness.

“Katsuki.”

Bakugou turned back to Aizawa, finding both his dad and uncle’s worried looks.

“What’s wrong?”

Bakugou was gay.

That was what was wrong.

Not him being gay. Being gay was nothing to be ashamed of, and Bakugou would gladly punch any haters in the face.

What felt wrong was him not being open to his family. He knew they wouldn’t ridicule and stop loving him or anything, so there was no reason for him to keep this from them. At least, he was 99.9% sure they’d accept him, but that .1% percent was still there…

We are also here with the Everything Hero: Creati. Creati, what brings you to march with the crowd tomorrow?"

Bakugou turned to his sister figure on the TV.

Well, it’s no secret that I’m bisexual,” Yaoyorozu answered with a proud smile. “I want to show the next generation that there’s no shame in identifying as queer—if they’re gay, bi, trans, ace, gender-fluid, open or still in the closet, anything, it’s okay. The world may still have a long way to go when it comes to accepting the queer community, but I—we—” Yaoyorozu gestured to her fellow LGBTQ+ heroes— "will be here protecting the right to love who you love, be who you are, and advocating for a better future for the next queer generation.”

Bakugou’s jaw clenched just as his hand around his shirt fabric did as well as his eyes. He turned back forward, though, eyes still closed, heart racing. He took a deep breath.

“Dad, Mic-ji, I’m gay.”

There it was.

Out in the open.

He did it, but that was just the first hurdle. Now came the additional hard part: his family’s response.

The room was silent save for the news interviewing other queer heroes. It did not help Bakugou’s nerves. Bakugou built the courage to force himself to crack an eye open and see his family’s reaction. He immediately regretted all his actions, going pale. His uncle. The cheesy giant grin on his face. “Mic-ji, no!”

Present Mic opened his mouth.

“Don’t you fucking da—!”

“Hi, Gay, I’m Dad,” Aizawa immediately cut in.

Bakugou dropped his head on the table, closed mouth screaming.

“Oi! I was gonna do that!” Present Mic cried to Aizawa.

“Well, I'm his dad," Aizawa responded indifferently. "I’m the one who should be throwing the dad jokes.”

“I hate you both!” Bakugou yelled. “Mitsuki and Masaru are my full-time parents now!”

Nya,” both cats meowed, nuzzling their human son’s leg. He’d startled them awake with his prior muffled screams.

Aizawa reached over and ruffled Bakugou’s hair. His son noticeably relaxed. “Thank you for telling us. That took a lot of courage.”

Bakugou finally picked his head back up, chin still resting on the table. “It’s whatever…” he grumbled, sitting back up as his dad took his hand back. “So… it’s fine…?”

“Of course it’s fine!” Present Mic answered for both himself and Aizawa. He slyly put his arm on the table. “So, you got yourself a boyfriend? Do I gotta ruffle him up?”

Bakugou face-palmed. Maybe coming out was a bad thing… At least officially in front of his uncle. He chose not to answer Present Mic, asking more of his own questions after dropping his hand. “Did… you guys already know or something?”

“We can’t know something about you if you don’t know about it yourself first,” Aizawa answered. “Sure, there may have been some signs you weren’t straight, but there weren’t any assumptions.”

Bakugou’s brows furrowed. “Signs? What signs?”

Aizawa and Present Mic glanced at each other a moment. The latter was first to hesitantly answer. "Well, you did only hang out with the girls when you were younger.”

“Really? I’d assume that’d do the opposite. Midnight kept labeling me as a little lady’s man.” Bakugou made a face at the distasteful joke.

“Speaking of Midnight, you did learn how to play with makeup from her. And you picked up hairstyling for Eri-chan.”

Bakugou slumped against his chair, arms crossing. “Any guy can learn how to do that shit…”

“The main sign was how you treated a certain student-turned-teacher as a kid,” Aizawa finally answered his two cents.

Bakugou perked back up, thrown. “Hah?”

How about you, Deku? What is marching in this parade for you?”

Fiery red eyes were back on the TV. There Midoriya was.

Um! I want to show the next generation of heroes that, no matter what they identify as, they can also be a great hero!”

“Ah-hem.”

Bakugou turned back to his dad at the cough he did. His dad was staring back at him over the rim of his mug as he drank. Aizawa's eyes may have seemed as impassive as usual, but Bakugou knew his dad just as well as he knew him.

“Sh—shut up!” Bakugou yelled, shooting out of his chair. His face was flushed. “Forget I fucking asked!”

Aizawa and Present Mic wordlessly watched as their boy darted for his room, slamming the door behind him. Guess they were on cleaning duty.

Bakugou flopped face down on his bed. He let out an irked groan. Stupid dad and uncle. Maybe he should’ve waited on telling them until he did get a significant other like he originally thought was when he'd come out to them.

Ping!

Bakugou’s phone went off.

He shifted to pull his phone out of his pocket, glancing at the notification. It was Yaoyorozu.

Momo-nee: When’s a good time for us to meet before the parade? 11:30 A.M. at the mall?

Bakugou smiled.

Katsuki: Sounds good
Katsuki: I told my dad and uncle I was gay
Momo-nee: How’d they take it?
Katsuki: Embarrassing as fuck but they were okay about it
Momo-nee: That’s great! I’m so happy for you!
Katsuki: I saw what you just said on the news and thought why not
Momo-nee: (º̩̩́⌣º̩̩̀ʃƪ)

Bakugou’s smile grew. Yaoyorozu was the first person he came out to sometime in middle school. Hell, she was the one who explained all that stuff to him when he was a kid. She was a great support, and thanks to her, he now had support from the rest of his family.

Knock knock!

Bakugou sat up at his bed just as the door opened. There his dad was.

“Your parents wanted to come in,” Aizawa said as Bakugou’s two cats strolled in. They jumped on the bed beside the teen. “You good?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Bakugou grumbled, crossing his legs.

Wordlessly, Aizawa came in as well. He joined everyone on the bed. “Seriously though, thank you for telling us. We want you to know that you being gay does not affect much how we love you. Understand?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Bakugou repeated, cracking a smile once more. “God, you sound so fucking corny, you old fart.”

Aizawa’s eyes narrowed. He grabbed his son in a headlock. “And you sound like a real brat, grouchy little brat.”

Bakugou couldn’t help but laugh as he halfheartedly tried to break free. “Okay! Let go!”

Aizawa let go, though he still kept a hand on his son’s head to ruffle his hair once more. “Anything more you want to share with us?”

“Nothing else at the moment.”

“Alright. Anybody you still want to keep this from? Before Mic says something before you’re ready.”

Bakugou shook his head. “Nah. It’s not really a secret.”

“Noted. Mic’s already making plans to join you tomorrow at the pride parade. Want me to stop him?”

“Oh my god…”

“I’ll take that as a yes.”

Aizawa gave Bakugou one last hair ruffle before standing and taking his leave. “I know you don’t want us there because it’ll cramp your style or whatever,” he started once at the door, “but we would be glad to go with and for you.”

“Yeah, whatever,” Bakugou mumbled. It was clear from his still present smile he appreciated the sentiment.

“Be safe out there tomorrow. I know you said you’d be with Yaoyorozu, but still, if you need anything, just call.”

“I know. Besides, Eri-nee and her moms’ll be there, too, so don’t worry.”

Aizawa hummed in acknowledgment. “Alright. Proud of you, Gay.” Aizawa quickly closed the door behind him as Bakugou flung his pillow, the cushion hitting the door instead. He heard chuckling out in the hall.

“You’re making me regret coming out!” Bakugou shouted after his dad. Though, they all know he didn’t mean it.

Finally coming out was a big load off Bakugou’s shoulders. Having his dad and uncle accept him was even better. The following day, they even came in as he was getting ready with a new black t-shirt with a rainbow skull, courtesy of his uncle. Corny, but once more, Bakugou appreciated the sentiment. Enough to actually change into it. Afterward, they walked him to the mall where he met up with his older sister figure. They were even there hours later to pick him up after the pride parade. It was those little shows of support that felt big to Bakugou. He was thankful for it, not regretting coming out to his family.

Until the following day back at UA when Bakugou walked into his full extended family of staff members all sporting braided pride bracelets, once again courtesy of Present Mic. Now he regretted not stopping his dad from stopping his uncle.
