Work Text:
“You still have that?” Kuniyuki stated more than questioned, glancing at the small porcelain bird sitting atop his boyfriend's paperwork. The bird's white and blue figure kept the sheets nicely in place to his side as the summer breeze swayed around them on the porch. The other papers currently being used were neatly held on to a clipboard, Tomoe's slender fingers flipping through the pages as he looked for a specific line.
“Of course I do. It's highly useful for work.” He smiled teasingly up at his boyfriend from his seat on the wooden steps.
“Ah, and here I was thinking you were just really romantic.” Kuniyuki set down a glass of lemonade beside Tomoe, sitting down on the step with his own drink in hand.
“And here I was, thinking you should know me better by this point.” Tomoe shifted the clipboard to the side, setting it down by the other papers before picking the glass up. He made a content humming noise as he held the glass, relishing the relief it brought from the summer heat. Kuniyuki smiled and took a sip of his own drink before placing it down on the step below them. The windchime made a faint clingaling noise as another small breeze washed up against he porch. In the distance a bird called from the trees, chirping and fluttering as a small creature darted between bushes and behind the corner of the building. Tomoe took a long drink of his lemonade before setting it down, away from his work.
“Akashi.”
“Hmm?”
“Nothing. I just like the way your name sounds.”
“Uhh...Thanks?”
“It fits with the summer sounds well. A-ka-shi.” He pronunciated the name as a successive chirp, flutter and chime sounded around them. Kuniyuki looked over, a little surprised. Tomoe had this uncanny gift of perfect, poetic timing. He would never be entirely used to it. The breeze that had formerly hit the windchime combed through the taller man's soft, white bangs, revealing his smile as he stared off at nothing in particular.
“And yours?”
“My name, you mean? Well...” He glanced over at his lover as he spoke.
“That's not something I can figure out. It would be more accurate if you did.” He challenged, propping his chin in his hand as he turned more towards the other.
“I'm...not the most poetic person but I guess I can try.” Kuniyuki thought of the 'sounds of the seasons.' Winter bell chimes, autumn festival drums, the happy chatter of the streets in spring.
“Spring. Your name sounds like spring. It's refined and elegant, but reminds me of being around people I love.” Kuniyuki paused for a moment.
“To-mo-e-ga-ta.” He spelled out the name idly with his finger against the wooden step. Well, that was more romantic than he was hoping for. Tomoe blushed slightly and smiled at him.
“Not the most poetic? You sound like you've written for years.” Tomoe laughed, his graceful demeanor temporarily broken. Kuniyuki rubbed the back of his head.
“Ah, well. I guess I learned a lot from Hotarumaru.” He grinned back at his boyfriend, earning another chuckle. He leaned over and planted a kiss on Tomoe's lips, taking the other man by surprise, but quickly feeling him melt into the moment. His eyelids fluttered shut as they stayed pressed against each other for a moment. They were quickly interrupted by two small gasps and quick muttering and the sounds of two sets of small feet padding back into the hallway of the house.
“Eh...I guess they woke up again.” Kuniyuki sighed before retrieving his lemonade and standing up.
“Such is life with two little children.”
“Such is life with two little gremlins.” He corrected him, turning around to leave. Tomoe smiled and pulled his clipboard and pen back towards him.
“Good luck with your work.” Kuniyuki offered.
“I'm not the one who's going to need it.” Tomoe smiled when his boyfriend snorted, watching him wander back into the house. Moments later he heard the high-pitched squealing of two small creatures caught in the act, followed by giggling and laughter. He smiled again. There they were. The sounds of summer.
