Work Text:
When Katsuki slams open the doors to the agency, it’s clear to everyone that the man is not in a good mood. Interns and other staff members scamper out of his way as he stomps past them into the elevator. He jabs the button marked for the top floor, growling at a poor secretary when he tries to press a button for a lower floor. The man flees from the elevator just in time for the doors to close. Katsuki sighs in relief, rubbing at his temple to ease the pressure of his headache. He never gets enough sleep these days, and these noisy extras running around first thing in the morning isn’t helping. No, he is absolutely not in a good mood.
And why would he be?
His boyfriend hasn’t come home in weeks, leaving Katsuki alone in their shared bed. Izuku is a textbook workaholic - needlessly doing overtime multiple days in a row, rushing around the city, and working himself to the bone fighting off the neverending wave of villains. And when that’s all over, he spends hours every day filling out paperwork. While Katsuki oftentimes does the same work, Izuku doesn’t know when to stop; staying up until he can barely keep his eyes open and can’t make the commute home, opting instead for the couch in his office.
The elevator dings, signaling his arrival at the top floor. The doors slide open and the crowd of people waiting for the elevator immediately move aside for him to pass. He nods at them in appreciation. The agency staff members on his floor have gotten used to his morning fits.
Katsuki’s eyes snap up and immediately narrow at the sight of a familiar head of green hair partially hidden by a gigantic computer screen. The clock on the wall reads 7:42 am. The nerd should still be asleep. Unless…
I swear to god, don’t fucking tell me he just didn’t sleep.
He makes a beeline for Izuku’s office and storms in without bothering to knock. He knows it’s bad when Izuku hardly even acknowledges him. Empty coffee mugs ( plural ), along with a few empty containers of instant noodles, are scattered around his desk. Katsuki feels his eye twitch. It’s a miracle that the stack of completed reports on his desk still somehow remains neat and pristine.
“Hey, Deku. What time is it?”
Izuku doesn’t look up from his desk. Rapid clicking noises fill the air as he types something in. The noise makes Katsuki grit his teeth. “Hm…? Oh! Time… Around 4? At least it was last time I checked-”
Wrong.
“Okay, that’s it.” He stomps toward Izuku’s desk, hand outstretched and already reaching for his computer.
“Huh?” Katsuki hits the power button and watches as the screen, open to an email, fades to black. “Wait- Kacchan!”
Ignoring him, Katsuki starts gathering the empty food containers and other scraps into a trash bin. “Clock out. You’re going home and taking a shower. Then pack your bags. We’re taking the day off- no- the week off.”
“I still have work-”
“Not anymore you don’t. You haven’t taken an actual break since we graduated . We’re going on vacation.”
“The agency won’t approve of-”
“You mean the agency that we own ?”
“But-”
“Izuku.” Katsuki sets the trash bag on the floor and grasps Izuku’s face with gloved hands, squishing his boyfriend’s cheeks together to keep him from protesting. “You deserve a break. The city won’t burn down if we take a week off. When we come back, you’ll be fully rested and be able to help twice as many people.”
Izuku furrows his brows, still looking like he wants to object, but Katsuki isn’t done. “Besides, I can barely remember the last time you and I got to spend time together.”
Working as a Pro Hero doesn’t leave a lot of room for date nights, and they’ve only gotten busier as they’ve climbed the charts, both of them ranking at No. 7 as the current top Hero Duo. Then add a stubborn boyfriend who rarely has a sense of self-preservation to the mix, and you can get a feel for what Katsuki has to deal with on a daily basis.
Katsuki can see the gears working in Izukus’s mind - albeit a little slower than usual because of exhaustion. The nerd probably has more caffeine than blood running through his veins right now. Finally, Izuku appears to concede and Katsuki lets him go.
“Okay, you’re right. I’m sorry,” he says as he rubs at his cheeks. Katsuki relaxes and leans back. “I’ll go-”
Then the landline next to Izuku’s desktop starts ringing. They stare at each other. At the same time, Izuku instinctively reaches for the phone while Katsuki hits the reject button. Izuku looks up at him sheepishly, shrugging his shoulders helplessly.
“Clock. Out,” he growls warningly, pointing at the open doorway.
Izuku starts to pout, but yelps when Katsuki throws a crumpled piece of paper directly in his face. He holds his hands up in surrender, “Right, right, I forgot. Sorry - see you at home!”
Katsuki quickly tugs him down for a kiss. “Straight home. No villains, all right? Stay safe.”
“I will! Love you,” he says with a grin as he slips away.
“Love you too, now go. Quit stalling.”
Izuku drums his fingers against his knees as he peers out the train window excitedly. The scenery is rapidly changing, morphing into something familiar yet uncertain at the same time. It’s getting chilly, sitting by the window, but the hot drink in his hand is keeping him warm while Kacchan is busy packing their bags into the overhead compartment.
When Kacchan finally plops down next to him, he starts badgering him about their destinations. He has a few guesses, but still can’t quite figure out where they could be going. “Where are we going? It looks like we’re leaving the city, but-”
“How are you still so keyed up?” Kacchan groans tiredly. “Shouldn’t you be exhausted- is that coffee ?”
He nods and takes a sip from the cup of coffee in his other hand, only for it to be taken away.
“Hey!”
“I literally just told you not to drink any more coffee! Where the fuck did you even get this anyway?” Katsuki squints at the label on the side of the cup.
“From the station, while you were getting our tickets - I may or may not have been falling asleep on my feet,” he admits.
Katsuki sighs in exasperation and wraps an arm around him, taking his jittery hands in his grasp and running his fingers over the backs of them soothingly. Izuku sighs contentedly and relaxes into his hold. He gazes up at his boyfriend, still waiting for a response, but Kacchan doesn’t fully answer the question.
“We’ve still got a long way to go,” Katsuki says instead. “Why don’t you try to get some sleep?”
“You know, you still haven’t told me where we’re going, Kacchan,” Izuku insists stubbornly. Katsuki pulls Izuku down so that he’s laying against his shoulder comfortably. He feels his eyes start to flutter shut, all too comfortable in the all-encompassing warmth.
“Sleep. You’ll see when we get there, just trust me.”
With a yawn, Izuku hums in affirmation and snuggles closer to do just that.
Always so stubborn , Katsuki thinks fondly. For all of his resistance a few minutes ago, Izuku is now snoring softly into his shoulder, completely knocked out. I’m glad he’ll at least get some proper sleep. He rests his chin on top of green curls, watching the scenery change outside the window.
After careful deliberation, he decided to take Izuku to a mountain resort far from the city. His first thought was to visit the beach but decided that it would be too crowded during this time of the year and the last thing they needed was to be swarmed by fans during their short time off.
There’s a humble resort a few minutes over - Katsuki had only heard of it from his mom when his parents went a couple of years ago. When he looked it up online, it seemed perfect. Natural hot springs (to hopefully get Izuku to relax), a location discreet enough that there shouldn’t be too many people, and trails to hike when they get restless.
The scenery is nice too, and I know Deku fucking loves that shit. He packed their camera because Izuku will definitely ask to take pictures later and probably only packed the bare necessities for the trip.
The rocking of the train is slowly lulling him to sleep. They still have a few hours, so Katsuki readjusts his grip on his boyfriend and closes his eyes.
Izuku groggily blinks his eyes open when he feels something press softly against his cheek. Through his sleep-addled haze, he gazes up at Kacchan and realizes that he kissed him to wake him up. Kacchan is so soft , he thinks happily.
“Oi, nerd. Wake up.”
Izuku stretches, feeling oddly refreshed despite having just woken up. “Mmm, Kacchan is so comfy, that was a great nap. What’s up?”
“We’re here and I needed to get up to get our bags down from the rack,” Katsuki says, ruffling his hair affectionately.
“Oh, do you need help?”
“Nah, I got it. Just do me a favor and eat something? All you have in your system right now is coffee and shitty noodles - wait… here.”
He tosses something to Izuku. A small bento lands easily in his hands. He hasn’t even opened it yet and he can practically feel himself salivating. Kacchan’s cooking. He sends Katsuki a quick grin before he digs in. “Thank you, Kacchan!”
Izuku scoops a bite out of the dish with a spoon and groans loudly in appreciation.
The tips of Katsuki’s ears go pink and he mutters out, “Don’t mention it.”
He happily chomps away, completely oblivious to Katsuki’s reaction.
“WOW, Kacchan! It’s so pretty!” Izuku exclaims as they climb out of the car. He shoulders his backpack and immediately jogs over to a small pond not too far away. “Aw, and they’ve got fish swimming everywhere. And there are so many little waterfalls all over the place!”
Katsuki sighs but doesn’t fight the smile that takes over his face. After spending another couple of hours driving, they’ve finally arrived at the resort. There are actually more people here than he expected, but all of the patrons are kind enough not to draw too much attention the two Pro Heroes. He shoulders his own bag and strides over to Izuku who’s still crouching down by the pond and smiling at the fish.
“C’mon, let’s go drop our stuff off at the house. Then we can walk around and look for somewhere to eat.” Katsuki adjusts the sleeves of his light button-down so that they’re pushed up his forearms. He extends a hand to his boyfriend who takes it with a grin. They climb down the rocky stairs, hand in hand, and fingers interlaced. With Izuku tugging him along excitedly, Katsuki almost loses his balance, drawing bright giggles out of his boyfriend. Bystanders turn toward the sound and break into soft smiles at the two of them.
He pulls Izuku closer to him, who is all too glad to wrap his arms around him. They talk and bicker about where they should go for dinner as they pass through the small town. There are small shops and restaurants on either side of the narrow street, and kiosks line up in the middle. They stop from time to time to watch people cook in the open. Katsuki makes a comment under his breath to Izuku about a poor red-faced man in a Hawaiian print shirt, who looks outrageously sunburnt and they both fail to choke back their laughter. Other tourists on the streets turn their heads when the couple walks by, smiling at the duo’s infectious spirit.
They eventually make it to the vacation home (which is bigger than necessary, but the owner insisted) and they unpack their belongings for the week. As Katsuki’s hanging up some of their clothes in the bedroom wardrobe, he hears a gasp from the living room.
“Kacchan! They have a hot spring here? And- aw, no - I should’ve brought my camera… I can see a huge lake from here and it looks so nice!”
Katsuki snorts. Called it. Izuku skips into the room, looking utterly delighted when Katsuki tosses him the camera bag. “Yeah, it’s a sulfur spring so the heat comes directly from the ground. The ones they have here are supposed to be really nice. And if you want to go exploring, they also have trails we can walk sometime this week, so…”
He pauses and clears his throat. “Uh, you good?”
Izuku is beaming at him, but tears are welling up in his eyes and it’s giving him mixed signals. Though he can’t say he’s that surprised when Izuku suddenly launches himself at him, throwing his arms around his neck. Katsuki stumbles a little at the weight but catches him anyway.
“ How are you so perfect?! You’ve thought of everything, haven’t you? Even from the start when you made lunch for me to eat on the way here… Seriously, you’re amazing, Kacchan!” Izuku exclaims, planting a kiss on his cheek. Katsuki flushes red from the praise and coughs awkwardly, turning his head to the side.
“‘S not that big a deal, just wanted to give you a break- ow!” He glares at Izuku, who’s now pinching his cheeks.
“It is a big deal, but I’ll drop it for now,” Izuku says teasingly. Then he sobers a little and smiles softly, “But thank you, Kacchan, this means a lot to me. I forgot how much there is to life, other than hero work. I forgot how much I love spending time with you .”
“Like I said, don’t mention it. I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself, though. That’s what this whole thing’s supposed to be about. Now come on, I had to drive us here from the train station and I’m fucking starving.” He laces their finger together and they head out of the house.
“Right! What should we eat?”
“This again?”
“Kacchannn, you know I never know what to eat. Besides, everything looks so good here, I’m basically fine with anything!”
“You say that now but you know that you’re not gonna be able to order later when you see the menus.”
“I know, but I don’t have to worry about it because you’ll order for me like always! You know me better than I know myself sometimes.”
“Dumbass.”
“You know you love me.”
“Yeah… I do.”
