Intermission: Make Me Wanna Savour Every Moment Slowly

Summary:

In his head, Hoseok pictured a duet. Slightly sexy, lots of body rolls, a few well-timed lifts. His friend Momo already agreed to perform, despite her crazy schedule. He just needed to find her duet partner.

Jungkook was the last piece, and he said yes!

...

Hoseok knows what he's going to do when he graduates. He has it all planned out. His plans never accounted for this.

Notes:

Hello! Welcome next instalment which took way to long to write, but it's finally done! (and that's what matters right?) I hope you enjoy reading it! Let me know what you think!

Work Text:

“Please Jungkook!” Hoseok pleaded, pout out in full force. He could see Jungkook’s resolve wavering, so he kept pushing. “Please, please, please!”

Jungkook let out a deep sigh. “Fine.”

Hoseok let out a whoop of excitement and pulled the younger boy into a hug. “Thank you!!! This is going to be amazing!”

Hoseok had last-minute been invited to choreograph a piece for his studio’s upcoming recital. In which, last-minute meant that the recital was in a week. Why his studio couldn’t tell him earlier, who knows? Why they did not know that they needed one more piece to give dancers a buffer between their numbers, who knows. The fact of the matter was that Hoseok needed to choreograph a piece, and he needed to do it fast.

That, plus the added stress of this being his final showcase put him on edge. He wanted to prove that his time at the studio meant something. That he learnt something. He wanted to show that there was a reason they asked him to join their teaching staff next year. So, the pressure to choreograph something great was immense.

He wanted to show that he belonged there. This was where he grew up. This studio was what shaped him into the dancer that he was today. He was going to do them proud.

Lucky for him, Hoseok always had ideas bouncing around in his head. Sometimes when he listened to music, he could just see choreography that went along with it.

He had the perfect piece in mind. Something that had been rattling around his head for a while now. The only problem was finding someone.

Hoseok would be too busy between his own numbers and helping with the classes he co-taught, so he didn’t want to add another performance number to his roster. Jimin was in the same boat, barely having time to breathe between his pieces.

In his head, Hoseok pictured a duet. Slightly sexy, lots of body rolls, a few well-timed lifts. His friend Momo already agreed to perform, despite her crazy schedule. He just needed to find her duet partner.

Jungkook was the last piece, and he said yes!

“It’s gonna be epic!” Hoseok promised. “Are you free after school today? Can you come to the studio?”

“I should be good,” Jungkook replied. “Let me just check to make sure.”

 “Perfect!”

“You want me to do that!” Jungkook exclaimed, looking nervous. “With a girl!”

“What’s wrong with dancing with a girl?” Jimin teased the younger.

Hoseok had just finished demonstrating what he wanted Jungkook to do for the chorus. Jimin was his stand-in for Momo as he worked out the kinks of the choreography. Also, it was better to get Jungkook comfortable with the moves before he introduced the aspect of having a girl less than five feet away from the boy.

“You’ve danced with a girl before,” Hoseok commented.

“Yeah,” Jungkook said, avoiding eye contact. His face was red. “But not like that.”

Hoseok walked over the nervous boy and placed a hand on his shoulder. “You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. I won’t make you do anything that you’re not comfortable with.”

Jungkook took a steadying breath, and when he looked up Hoseok could see the determination in his eyes. “I’m gonna do it.”

“You sure?” Hoseok checked in. “I won’t be mad if you don’t want to anymore.”

“I can do it,” Jungkook promised. “I’m going to be so good.” There was a pause. “Girls are not that scary, it’ll be fine.”

Hoseok smiled wide. “Great!” He moved by Jimin, who also moved into position for the beginning of the chorus. “So, you’re going to start with body roll, like this,” Hoseok demonstrated. “Then put your hands on their hips.”

Jungkook turned bright red as Hoseok demonstrated, but copied the moves as he saw them.

They had a long way to go, but Hoseok knew it was going to turn out amazing!

“There’s a letter for you on your bed,” Hoseok’s mom called out to him when he came home that evening.

“Okay,” Hoseok yelled in reply and began to climb the stairs to his room. He was tired and sweaty but satisfied with how far they had gotten with choreography tonight. A few more sessions and Jungkook would be good to go. The goal was to make Jungkook as comfortable with the choreography before making him do the choreography with a girl.

The aforementioned letter was sitting on the edge of Hoseok’s bed, just as his mother said. Hoseok looked at the letter inquisitively, who would send him a letter? He didn’t recognize the return to sender address, and the logo on the front of the envelope looked real fancy. Maybe this was a marketing thing.

Without much further ado, Hoseok tore open the letter, and slid out its contents. Inside was a flyer with a picture of a fancy looking studio on it, and a letter.

Hoseok quickly scanned the letter, reading something about being invited to join the company, and an opportunity to grow him into a professional dancer, or something like that.

Hoseok tossed the letter on his desk, just as he thought, it was marketing.

Grabbing his towel, Hoseok left to take a shower, clearing the letter from his mind.

“Let’s run it again from the top,” Hoseok instructed. “Jungkook, all your lifts would be easier if you hold Momo closer.”

Jungkook turned red and took an unconscious step away from the girl.

Hoseok shot an apologetic smile at Momo, who simply waved him off.

“I don’t bite Jungkookie,” Momo teased. “I don’t if you look me in the eye, or hold me close, I promise.”

Jungkook looked up making brief eye contact before his eyes shot back to the ground. Somehow, he turned even redder.

Hoseok repressed a sigh. “Let’s run it again.”

Hoseok knew Jungkook could do this, and practice made perfect. He just hoped that with all the practice Jungkook would eventually be able to hold Momo without looking like he was physically in pain.

“I’m glad you’re not going to America,” Hoseok said. He and Namjoon were sitting in their favourite bubble tea shop trying to finish up their last few assignments of the year.

“I’m glad too,” Namjoon said. “But looking at it now that the decision has been made and there’s no turning back, it was the right choice.”

“You don’t regret it?” Hoseok asked. If it was him, Hoseok knows that a small part of him would constantly regret not reaching for the higher target. Not pushing himself a bit more.

“Maybe a part of me will regret it,” Namjoon said. “Especially on the days when I’m here, and nothing feels like it’s going right. But I think I would also know that staying was the right choice. I still get to do what I want to do here, and it’s not like I’m going to a bad school.” Namjoon gave a small shrug. “If I would have gone, I would have the prestige, but I don’t think I would have thrived. You can’t live off of just prestige, you also need happiness.”

Hoseok never thought about it that way. It was different with dance, or at least it felt different. There was always something to strive for. Some way to push yourself hard, make yourself better. Prestige was everything, but to him, prestige also felt like happiness.

As is reading his thoughts Namjoon said. “You know you don’t have to teach at your studio next year. You can always audition for a company. You could probably do both if you really wanted to.”

The thought had crossed his mind, but Hoseok had his plan. It had been his plan for as long as he could remember and that was to teach. He had never really considered an alternative. That’s the goal he was pushing himself towards. To be the best dance teacher there was.

“I want to teach,” Hoseok said earnestly, and he meant it. “You’re coming to the showcase next weekend, right?”

Namjoon nodded. “It’s your last showcase. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

“It’s going to be so good!” Hoseok exclaimed. “Also, Jungkook’s duet is gonna be awesome. He’s become so confident, I’m so proud!”

“I can’t wait to see it!” Namjoon smiled. “Your choreography is always amazing. I get to enjoy it even more because you’re not trying to kill me with it.”

“I didn’t kill you with my choreography,” Hoseok tried to pout, but a smile was creeping across his face.

“You almost did,” Namjoon flopped dramatically over as if he was melting. “My body was not made to move that way.”

Hoseok’s laugh rang out, and soon Namjoon’s voice joined in.

Hoseok entered the backstage with a sad sort of excitement. This was his senior year and last showcase. This had been such a big part of his life, and he was sad to see it end.

But life moves on, and so must he. Not that he was moving on much, just transitioning from student to teacher. Hoseok hated endings and didn’t know what he would have done if he had to give this up completely.

“Hoseok!” A voice called out to him before he could head to the changing rooms.

Hoseok turned around trying to find the source of the voice. He saw the studio’s director standing beside another well-dressed man.

“Director!” Hoseok cheerfully called out his greeting and walked over to the pair.

“Hoseok I would like you to meet Soon Sungdeuk, ” The director introduced.

Hoseok put out his hand to shake, “Nice to meet you, sir.”

“Hoseok,” Sungdeuk said. “It’s so nice to finally meet you. I was hoping to hear from you, but I’m glad I caught you today.”

Confusion could be seen clearly on Hoseok’s face. He did not know this man, but Sungdeuk acted as he should.

“I’m sorry,” Hoseok said tentatively, “I don’t… why?”

Sungdeuk let out a small laugh. “We sent you a letter a few weeks ago, but I guess you didn’t get it.” Hoseok tried to rack his brain for what Sungdeuk was talking about. “We would like to recruit you to join our studio.”

The memory of the flyer with a shiny studio flashed in Hoseok’s mind. Oh, that letter.

“Thank you for the offer, but I was planning to teach here next year,” Hoseok answered.

“This is a great opportunity,” the director said. “This will give you an opportunity to grow as a dancer, more than what you would get by just staying here.”

Hoseok didn’t know what to answer. He always knew what his path would be. He was happy with the path he was on, why would he want to change it?

“Think about it,” Sungdeuk told Hoseok, “Just let me know by the end of tonight.”

Hoseok opened his mouth to refuse once again but Sungdeuk and the director had already turned to walk away.

Much to Hoseok’s relief, the show had been running smoothly. He felt great about all his numbers, and his students had been killing it. He was so proud. The only thing that soured the night was the little feeling in the back of his mind that he should be thinking about Sungdeuk’s offer. But there was no time to sit down and think it through in the middle of the show. Plus, Hoseok had already made a decision about what he was going to do next year.

Hoseok needed to concentrate. Specifically, he needed to calm Jungkook down who looked like he was about two seconds from either passing out or running away.

“You look kind of pale Kook, you sure you’re ok?” Jimin asked, concerned.

“Never better,” Jungkook answered, voice strained. “I’ve been on stage before, I’m fine. It’s gonna be great.”

Hoseok gave Jungkook a comforting pat on the back. “You know, sometimes I think performing in these shows is a lot more nerve-wracking than performing in musicals.”

Jungkook looked at the older boy in surprise. “Really?”

“Of course,” Hoseok gave the boy a soft smile. “In musicals, I’m performing a role. I get to pretend to be someone else. When I’m out on stage, it’s just me. No pretending, just me on the stage giving it my all.”

“Just me,” Jungkook echoed, still looking kind of dazed.

The duet was fast approaching. As numbers ended and the time for Jungkook to go on stage neared, Jungkook was progressively getting more and more nervous.

“Deep breaths Jungkookie,” Hoseok encouraged. “This is something scary and new, and you’re so brave for doing it. You’ve worked so hard, and I can’t wait for everyone to see how amazing you are.”

“Thanks, Hobi.” Jungkook let out a few steadying breaths before squaring his shoulders, his whole demeanour changing.

It always amazed Hoseok how Jungkook could change from nervous wreck to overconfident brat in a matter of seconds. It was like a switch flicked and suddenly confident Jungkook was here and he was ready to tackle anything.

“Your number is in two,” Jimin informed. “You should probably head backstage, Kook. I think Momo is already there.”

Jungkook nodded, jaw set and determination in his eyes as he went to wait in the curtains.

“It always impresses me when he does that,” Hoseok voiced his thoughts out loud.

Jimin looked confused. “Does what?”

“When he goes from nervous to confident,” Hoseok explained. “It happens whenever he goes on stage. It’s like he becomes a whole new person.”

“I think he only does that because you’re good at calming him down,” Jimin said. “You have a way of rallying your students. It’s always nice to get a confidence boost from you before a show.

“I just say what needs to be heard,” Hoseok shrugged.

“And that’s what makes you such a good teacher.”

“If you say so.” Hoseok grabbed Jimin’s hand and started pulling him in the direction that Jungkook was headed. “We should go now before we miss the number.”

Jimin let himself be pulled, but he was more than willing to follow. “Jungkook would kill you if you missed the number.”

They quieted as they entered the wings, tucking themselves out of the way as to not get into the way of dancers exiting the stage.

“Break a leg Momo,” Hoseok pulled Momo into a side hug when he saw her.

Momo was bouncing on the balls of her feet, keeping herself warm before the number.

There was the sound of applause and then the opening notes of the number started playing.

Jungkook had a solo at the beginning of the number, and Hoseok watched as he confidently strutted on stage. A confident smirk on his face.

Both dancers left backstage panting heavily, but with smiles on their face.

“Great job Momo!” Hoseok pulled her into a hug. “You were amazing!”

“Thanks, Hoseokie,” Momo whispered back. “I’m glad you asked me to do this, it was fun.”

Hoseok pulled away from the hug and went to squeeze Jungkook into a crushing embrace. “You were amazing Jungkook! I’m so proud of you!”

Jungkook blushed as he hugged back. “Thanks, Hobi.”

“You should be proud of yourself,” Hoseok said.

“I am. You’re a great teacher Hobi,” Jungkook squeezed him tight. “You’re strict, but it’s fun learning things from you.”

Hoseok squeezed Jungkook back. “Thanks Kook. You’re an amazing dancer. Super easy to teach.”

Jungkook still hadn’t let go of the hug when he said. “I’m gonna miss seeing you on stage though. You’re a great teacher, but an even better dancer.”

The little feeling bouncing around Hoseok’s head grew a bit louder. “I’ll still get to perform. I haven’t left the stage for good.”

Jungkook finally let go, looking Hoseok in the eye. “I know. But it’s not the same. The world is definitely missing out.”

“And speaking of the world missing Hoseok dancing,” Jimin interrupted. “They’re about to miss a chance if you don’t get your butt backstage right now Hoseok.”

Hoseok bit back a curse as he quickly let go of Jungkook and raced backstage. “You were both amazing!” Hoseok called over his shoulder before entering backstage. Time to get himself into the zone.

They were trying to leave to go eat celebratory waffles. The keyword being trying because Jimin was off. He was definitely stuck somewhere getting praised for his incredible numbers, and Hoseok didn’t want to cut that short, but Seokjin had left ten minutes ago with Jungkook, Taehyung and Yoongi to grab them a table, and he really didn’t want to contend with a grumpy Seokjin.

“Maybe we should go search for Jimin?” Namjoon suggested.

They were both standing by the exit, trying to avoid most of the crowd. Hoseok had received his fair share of praise, and now he was ready to gorge himself on waffles. He didn’t really want to forge the crowds once more to find Jimin.

“I mean if you’re volunteering,” Hoseok said.

Namjoon hesitated, looking at the size of the crowd. “We could go together?”

Hoseok looked at the time on his phone once more and let out a sigh. “Yeah, let’s go search for our Jiminie.”

Hoseok received more congratulations as they walked through the crowd. Some of the younger dancers he taught asked him for a photo which he was more than happy to oblige. They had finally caught a glimpse of where Jimin was surrounded by a group of his dance friends when they were stopped once more.

“Hoseok,” Sungdeuk greeted. “I was hoping that I would catch you.”

“Mr. Soon,” Hoseok greeted back. “I hope you enjoyed the show.

“I did. You were great Hoseok,” Sungdeuk complimented. “Have you given more thought to my offer?”

The little feeling at the back of Hoseok’s mind was back, but he still couldn’t figure out what it was. “Thank you for the offer Mr. Soon, but I’m going to turn you down. I’m happy with just teaching here next year.”

“Ahhh, what a shame,” Sungdeuk said. “You would be amazing as part of our troupe, but if you’ve made up your mind.” Sungdeuk pulled a card out of his pocket. “We’re still looking to fill a few more spots, but until we do and if you change your mind send us an email.”

“Sure,” Hoseok said, taking the card. “Good luck with your search.”

Sungdeuk nodded to him and turned to leave.

“What was that?” Namjoon said.

Hoseok forgot that Namjoon was behind him. “He’s opening a studio or something and wants me to join his troupe.”

“And you turned him down?” Namjoon said, confusion clear on his face.

Hoseok shrugged, “Yeah. I already have a plan for what I’m going to do next year.”

“Things change Hoseok. You shouldn’t say no to opportunities just because you already had a course set. If that opportunity would have you happy, why not take it?”

“Because I already have a plan,” Hoseok said firmly. “I don’t need to consider anything else.”

Namjoon gave Hoseok a soft smile. “Are you saying no because you don’t want to? Or did you just never consider an alternative?”

Hoseok opened his mouth to answer, then closed it again. He didn’t know how to answer Namjoon’s question. Luckily he was saved by Jimin bounding towards them.

“You ready for waffles?” Jimin said, slinging an arm around Hoseok’s shoulders.

“Yes!” Hoseok said, ignoring the look Namjoon was giving him. “Let’s go!”

“That was so cool!” was the first thing they heard when they entered the waffle shop. It seemed that Taehyung was giving a very excited and very loud play by play of the entire night. Judging by the blush on Jungkook’s face he was at the part of the show where he was complementing Jungkook.

“You’re finally here,” Seokjin said, shoving a forkful of waffle into his mouth.

“I see you didn’t wait for us,” Hoseok said, walking up to the booth with his friends.

“You were taking forever,” Soekjin said, mouthful.

Hoseok, Namjoon and Jimin went to place their order, then went to join the rest of their friends in the booth.

“I should give you a medal or something so making Jungkook dance like that with a girl,” Seokjin said when they were all seated.

“You should have seen his face when we first showed him the choreo,” Jimin said laughing. “He looked like he was about to explode.”

“Next time take pictures,” Seokjin told him.

“Noooo,” Jungkook whined. “You’re being mean. Stop it.”

“Little Jungkookie, dancing with a girl,” Seokjin teased. “They grow up so fast.” Seokjin pretended to wipe tears from his eyes. He didn’t see Jungkook pounce at him, and let out a squawk as he tried to wrestle his brother off him.

“How are you feeling Hobi?” Yoongi asked, trying to ignore the fighting brothers. “Last showcase. Must be bittersweet.”

“No, don't remind me,” Jimin whined. “Hobi needs to stay with me forever. I’m gonna miss my perfect duet partner.”

Hoseok chuckled. “I’m sad, but not that much. I mean, I’m teaching at the studio next year, so you’re still stuck with me Jimin.” he ignored the look Namjoon was giving him, “It’s not my last showcase. Just the last one I’ll be dancing in.”

“I’m sad I don’t get to see you dance on stage anymore,” Taehyung whined. “You always look so cool!”

“I’ll still be dancing, just less often,” Hoseok reassured.

“But imagine you had the chance to dance a lot more,” Namjoon said, giving Hoseok the look that he was trying to ignore. “And got paid for it. That would be such a cool opportunity, wouldn’t it.”

Hoseok could feel his friends questioning glances, but ignored them by taking a big bite out of his waffle.

“I feel like we’re missing something,” Yoongi said.

“I got offered to join a dance company, and I turned them down,” Hoseok explained.

“What?!” Jimin exclaimed. “That’s amazing! Why would you do that? ”

“I thought you wanted me to stay with you forever,” Hoseok said. “I already had a plan for what I’m going to do next year.”

“But can’t that plan change?” Seokjin asked.

“I guess,” Hoseok said. “But I don’t see the need to.”

“But why not?” Namjoon pressed.

“I don’t understand why you’re pushing this?” Hoseok said. “You’re the one who got accepted into Harvard, and then decided not to go. How is this any different?”

“It’s different because I considered my options, weighed the pros and cons, and then decided it wasn’t the best for me.”

“Also,” Yoongi chimed in. “You’re always going on about how you’re gonna miss dancing on stage, and how you wish you could perform forever. Isn’t this the opportunity to do so?”

“I guess,” Hoseok mumbled into his food.

“I really liked you as a teacher,” Jungkook said. “And I think any future student would be lucky to have you. But you’re also incredible on stage. I think whatever you decide, you’ll be amazing at.”

“Thanks Kookie,” Hoseok smiled at the other.

“You were the coolest tonight!” Taehyung said, practically bouncing with excitement. “The way you did that flip in the first number! It was all like, bam! And then whoosh! And you were like flying!”

Taehyung continued to go on a rant about how cool Hoseok was during the showcase, which became a rant about how cool Jimin was, then about how cool everything was.

“If I were you, I would take the offer,” Jimin said quietly so just Hoseok could hear him. “I would miss you, but as a fellow dancer, I know how rare an opportunity like this is. I don’t understand how you could say no.”

Jimin was right, it was a great offer. But it was too late now, he already turned it down.

It was too late to change his mind, Hoseok told himself, although the card Sungdeuk gave him sat heavily in his pocket.

“I don’t think you should be scared to change your mind about something,” Jimin said. “If life brings you down a different path and a new door opens, maybe that’s where you’re supposed to go.”

...

Later that night, once he was home and tucked into bed, Hoseok tossed and turned as he was trying to fall asleep. Normally he was a bit restless after a show, the adrenaline slowly ebbing from his system. But tonight, something else was on his mind.

This was his last year, his last showcase as a dancer. The last time he would get the experience the thrill of the stage. Or maybe not the last time on stage, but his opportunity to perform will definitely be a lot less next year.

He was okay with that. That was the path he put himself on.

So why did he feel so unsettled?

In the quiet of his bedroom, without the rush of backstage Hoseok could finally pin it down. That feeling was regret. Regret might be a too strong word for it. Disappointment? Disappointment in himself for not even considering it.

Did he say no because he was scared?

No that wasn’t right. He wasn’t scared. He just never considered another future for himself.

Was that why he said no, because he never considered an alternative to teaching at the studio where he grew up?

Namjoon’s words echoed in his head. Are you saying no because you don’t want to? Or did you just never consider an alternative?

Hoseok had never considered an alternative than the future he laid out for himself. He was happy with the future he had for himself. He had a goal, he achieved his goal, he was happy.

Jimin’s words then popped into his head. If life brings you down a different path and a new door opens, maybe that’s where you’re supposed to go.

This was something new. Something he never considered. Something that was every dancer’s dream. Something that maybe he should have considered, instead of immediately turning it down. What was it Namjoon said?

Things change Hoseok. You shouldn’t say no to opportunities just because you already had a course set. If that opportunity would have you happy, why not take it.

Why shouldn’t he take it? What was holding him back?

What was holding him back?

Himself.

He was holding himself back. Why shouldn’t he take it? If this new path opened up, why not take it? It wasn’t what he was planning for himself, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t the right thing.

Hoseok bolted up from his bed and turned on his bedside lamp. His eyes narrowed in on the card given to him earlier that night.

It might be too late now, but he should at least give it a chance. This wasn’t part of his plan at all, but that didn’t mean this was something bad. It was just something new.

Hoseok went over to his desk and opened his computer to write an email. It had been so long since he did something not planned out. Something out of the blue.

But slowly and surely, he knew that this was going to be right for him.
