A Little Help From Your Subconscious

Summary:

Beep beep beep beep beep be-
Your eyes snap open at the unfamiliar sound. This is not my alarm, this is… A glance around the room tells you that you must’ve teleported into Todoroki’s room in the night. Oh no. Fuck.

Work Text:

You wake up late.

“Oh my god!” A glance at your beeping alarm clock reads that class starts in five minutes. Ok, uniform on, teeth brushing really quick, no time for breakfast, and…phew.

You teleport into your seat and find that Aizawa isn’t even there yet. Nobody is. “Huh?”

Shit. It’s Sunday, no school.

“Where’s y/n?” Uraraka scans the breakfast table. Deku’s in his spot, Iida in his, and…Todoroki is sitting in your spot because you aren’t here. Are you still asleep?

“Didn’t she come down already?” Todoroki asks, and then “oh.”

You teleport from the classroom straight onto your usual breakfast spot. Directly onto Todoroki’s lap.
“Ugh, I’m so hungry! Sorry guys, I thought it was a school day, so I teleported to class, but nobody was there, and then I remembered it was Sunday…guess I need to start sleeping more, I’m getting super out of it these days. Wait, why is there a back to this chai-” You’re leaning back into Todoroki’s chest, his arms slightly out to the side in surprise.

“Good morning, y/n.” You jump a bit at the voice, blushing when you realize that you’ve teleported directly on top of your classmate and love interest, oou la la!

“Oh… ha, good morning…Sorry about that, I’ll move now…” You switch from his lap into the empty seat next to him, laughing weakly.

“Are you okay?” Uraraka pokes your hand a few times when you don’t respond. “Y/n?”

“Huh? Sorry, I guess I didn’t hear you.”

“Are you okay?” She repeats, eyebrows furrowing.

“I think so. I don’t think I’m sick.” A few more minutes pass in silence as you stare into the distance.
“Here.” Todoroki places your usual breakfast in front of you. “You said you were really hungry.”
“Oh! Oh, thank you.” You pinch yourself to try and wake up a bit. When did he get up from the table? And he prepared all of this for me?

“Y/n, are you sure you’re alright?” Iida asks, watching as you slowly start to eat.
“I think so…I don’t know, guess I’ve just been extra tired recently.”

“Maybe you should just relax today, huh? Go back to bed, even.” Uraraka adds.

“I think I will try to have a quiet day. What are you guys doing to do?”

“Deku and I are going to the mall!” Uraraka cheers, causing Midoriya to flush bright red and choke on his breakfast.

“I thought Yaoyorozu, Iida, and Tsu were going too?” He coughs out, clearing his throat.

“I decided to visit Tensei today, but I can’t speak for Yaoyorozu and Tsu.”

“They made other plans,” Uraraka explains, “So it’s just you and me!” Everyone chuckles when that statement sends him into another coughing fit.

“What are you doing today, Todoroki?”

“Just reading for a while. I might go visit my mom this afternoon, though.”

“Sounds nice,” You reply, and silence falls over the table again.

“Would you like a cup of coffee? Or tea?” Todoroki is standing near where you now. When did he get up again? Damn, I’m totally out of it.
“Who, me?” You look around to see that everyone else has already left. “Oh. Yes, please. I can come help, you’ve had to do everything for me this morning...”

“I don’t mind. Just stay here, I’ll be right back.” As Todoroki walks to the kitchen, you find yourself wondering what you did to deserve the care of someone like him. So cute, too. And he brought me breakfast? I can’t believe I teleported into his lap this morning…he doesn’t seem too put off by it, though, especially since he’s making me…wait, did I ask for coffee or tea? Shit. I didn’t tell him what I wanted. I should get up to go let him kno-

“Here. You normally drink it like this, right?” Your cheeks warm as you look down into the perfectly made cup. He even knows how I take my tea/coffee?
“Yes. This is perfect, thank you!”

“I’m going to go get my book and then I’ll be on the couch for a while. You can join me if you like, or maybe go get more sleep like Uraraka suggested.”

“Thanks! I, um, I’ll bring my book and come sit.”

Todoroki is a gift from the gods, you decide, grabbing your current reading material from your room. He is already settled into one corner of the couch when you return, so you tuck yourself into the other corner.

Your book is good, but you spend most of the time with your brain absently wandering off, and it isn’t long before your head falls into the cushion on the back of the couch, your book slipping from your fingers into your lap.

Todoroki notices when you finally nod off. Good, she’s obviously exhausted.

His eyes redirect to his book, but he’s just reading the same line over and over again.

And then, much to his surprise, he sees you flicker in his peripheral vision. Todoroki’s eyes snap back up to you only to see you disappear and reappear again in the span of two seconds. Is she…half teleporting in her sleep? Should I wake her?

You disappear again and Todoroki feels a sudden weight on his chest. You’ve teleported directly to him, an ability he knew you were honing in class. You were fine with teleporting to familiar places, but going to wherever a familiar person was would be convenient for teleporting to other heroes if you were called to a crisis in an unfamiliar location.

Apparently you were making serious progress, because you were now sprawled across Todoroki, and a small blush had risen to the normally stoic boy’s cheeks. Was she thinking about me when she fell asleep? I wonder if she’ll want to stay this close when she wakes up…

He readjusts his arms to read around you, trying to focus despite the growing warmth in his heart. Thirty minutes later, he gives into the urge to set down his book and hold you properly.  So huggable…I don’t think anyone’s been this close to me since I was an infant.

You wake in a patch of afternoon sun and find yourself alone in the common room. Why am I on this side of the couch…? Sitting up, you stretch and shake out the disorientation. That was a good nap, at least…

Beep beep beep beep beep

Your eyes snap open at the unfamiliar sound. This is not my alarm, this is… A glance around the room tells you that you must’ve teleported into Todoroki’s room in the night. Oh no. Fuck.

Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep be-

The alarm rings louder in your ears as you look around in dismay. You’re in his bed, under the covers, and he’s…spooning you, so closely that everywhere is touching, his arms around your middle and his head resting on yours, half tucked into your shoulder. Oh no. How the hell did I get here? Did I- TELEPORT. You remember your quirk and blink back to your bed, breathing out a huge sigh of relief.

Maybe he didn’t notice that I teleported to him last night. He didn’t seem to wake up to the alarm right away, and…he can’t have known I was there…he wouldn’t just cuddle with me if he knew I’d teleported into his room like a creep…right?

You say nothing during breakfast, and nothing during class, but your mind is at war with itself. What if he was already awake when I teleported away? I couldn’t see him, he was behind me…Fuckity fuck, what if he thinks I’m a pervert like Mineta? Ugh, what a horrible invasion of privacy for Todoroki, I can never show my face around him again…

That night, you wrap your fingers into your bedsheets with a fervor, hoping that you’ll wake up where you’re supposed to. Alone. In your bed.

Beep beep beep beep be-

Todoroki’s bed. Again. Fuck. This time you’re sleeping half on top of his chest, one of your arms slung across his stomach while one of his wraps around your lower back. For a moment you consider how comfortable you are, and how nice it feels to be so near someone…but you can’t stay. Not if he doesn’t know you’re there, not if you’ve been intruding into his personal space while he sleeps.

You teleport back to your room, destined to spend another day in paranoia.

It happens again, and again, and again. You wake up in a different position each time. One night you’re the big spoon, your nose buried into the back of his neck shamelessly. The next night you’re simply sleeping next to him, holding hands. Then you wake facing him, folded into his chest. Each time you manage to teleport away, hoping that you’ll have this sorted out before you become familiar enough with his alarm clock to oversleep.

It’s the morning when you wake up completely on top of Todoroki – like you’re a damn koala – that you decide to talk to Aizawa about your problem.

You’re anxious all through the lecture, and after the rest of the students leave you approach your teacher and clear your throat. Here goes nothing.

“I, uh, I was wondering if I could ask you about something?” He nods for you to keep going, so you do. “It’s about controlling my quirk. I’ve been waking up…in different places than where I fall asleep. I think I’m sleep-teleporting, and I was wondering if there is any precaution I can maybe take…” You twist your hands together anxiously. I hope he won’t pry about where I woke up today…

“Are you waking up in dangerous situations?”

“No…”

“Outside of school grounds?”

“No.”

“Do you mind if I ask where?”

“I, um, I-” Aizawa sighs heavily and you stop stuttering over your words to look up at him.

“It’s fine. I won’t force you to answer, so long as where you wake up isn’t placing you in danger. Did you sleepwalk as a child?”

“I…yes. I even teleported in my sleep when my quirk first manifested. It terrified my parents, but I never went too far, my quirk wasn’t very strong at that point.”

“You’ve been practicing new skills to grow your quirk. It may simply be because your quirk is getting stronger, and until you’ve mastered those skills you might be a bit unstable. So long as you consistently wake up somewhere safe, it should be fine. You should work harder on developing this part of your quirk, though, just in case,” He pauses to ink a reminder on the palm of his hand. “I’ll contact Ectoplasm about further training for you outside of class time. Is that all?”

“Yes, sir. Thank you.”

Aizawa nods, and you walk out of the classroom with a sinking feeling in your stomach.

How long will it take to master your quirk? How long until Todoroki notices…

Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep bee-

Your eyes crack open to what’s pretty much your new alarm. You haven’t woken up to your own in ages, and, oh my.

This morning, Todoroki’s face is centimeters from your own, and you almost screech in shock, half expecting for his eyes to open any second.

They don’t. You’re about to teleport away when his arms tighten around your back, pulling you suddenly into a warm embrace.

“Stay,” Todoroki whispers, his face in your shoulder now, and you freeze up. “Why do you have to teleport away every morning?” His voice sounds adorably sleepy, and you’re pretty sure you’re about to die for a thousand reasons. I got caught. He sounds so cute. He’s known about it the whole time. He’s still cuddling me anyway. He wants me to stay?

“I’m so sorry, Todoroki,” You whisper, horrified, “I honestly can’t control it, I’m asleep when I-”

“I know.”

You’re not sure what else to say, so you close your eyes and lay silently in his arms for a few minutes. It’s Sunday again, anyways, and it’s awfully comfortable here.

“How long have you known?” You finally ask, hardly sure if you want to know.

“That day we read on the couch. You fell asleep and teleported onto me.” You flush with embarrassment.

“H-how did you know about me teleporting into your bed? I really am sorry if I’ve been waking you…” You can feel one of his hands move to the back of your head, his thumb absentmindedly rubbing light circles into your neck while he answers.

“I’m a light sleeper. I wake up when you teleport in. I don’t mind, though. Do you?” Todoroki purposefully left out the part about cuddling into you once you appeared. It should be obvious by this point anyway.

“I, uh…I don’t mind. I’ve been getting better sleep, actually. I just…I’ve felt bad about invading your personal space, even if it’s unintentional, I…I can’t just teleport in here uninvited every night, you know?”

“Consider yourself invited, then.”

All of the breath is sucked out of your lungs. You hold each other a little tighter, but no more words are spoken that morning. It’s long past breakfast when you and Todoroki get out of bed, and you find yourself hoping that you’ll never master your quirk if it means waking up next to Todoroki again.

The next morning when you wake, Todoroki’s already up. You’re lying on his left arm, with his right hanging around the scoop in your waist, and legs tangled. The first thing you see is those heterochromatic eyes (which startles you for a split second, don’t get me wrong) and you wonder how long he’s been awake.

“Good morning,” You mumble, and he leans in to press a kiss against your lips. It’s close mouthed and quick, but your face bursts into flames instantly.

“Good morning,” Todoroki replies, and you’re done for. Knock out! The winner is Todoroki Shoto!

“We need to get ready for class,” You say, but your eyes are still fixed on his lips and he knows it because he leans in again, effectively shutting down the entirety of your brain when his bottom lip brushes against your top lip. It’s slightly more hesitant than the first kiss, but it lasts longer, and you can feel yourself melting from the gentle touch as you kiss back. The hand by your waist travels up to your shoulders and wraps around them, pulling you closer.
The next kiss is firmer, and any thought of getting out of bed is swallowed up in it as Todoroki shifts so that you’re lying on your back as he places his lips on your mouth, your nose, your jaw.

“Five more minutes, then?”
