Work Text:

It wasn’t often that Dabi paid Hawks a visit without prior announcement. So, it wasn’t often that he found him in his bathroom, half naked and some pretty nasty burn marks on his back. To be more precise, it had never happened before.

”I didn’t cause those,” he mused and Hawks literally jumped in the air from surprise. After getting down to the tile, he sent him a nasty glare.

”Who said you can just come and go whenever you want?” He growled, but Dabi paid him no mind. His eyes were on the bottle in his hand – a gel for bun wounds.

”Let me do it,” he said, stepping closer. Hawks turned around, so his back was towards the mirror, and blared at him.

”I can handle it, thanks,” he said with his jaw clenching. Dabi snorted at that and stepped even closer.

”Sorry to say this, birdie, but I think I am more adept when it comes to burns.” Hawks averted his gaze and his hand squeezed the bottle in it. Dabi’s eyes widened and had to hold back a growl. ”This isn’t your first time.”

Hawks didn’t answer, only bit into his lips and closed his eyes. He hated the feeling of such vulnerability. He looked back at Dabi eventually and shoed the bottle in his hand. Dabi rewarded him with a small smile which made the bird slightly blush. He quickly turned back towards the mirror and grabbed the edge of the sink.

”I hope you won’t make it worse than it already is,” he said and Dabi snorted.

”Who do you think I am, birdie? I am an expert of burn wounds.”

Hawks couldn’t hold back the small giggle leaving his lips. Dabi, no matter how hard he tried to deny, thought it was cute. To draw his thought off of that sound, Dabi squeezed a considerable amount of gel in his right palm, then put the bottle down and rubbed his palms together. He leaned closer and with better examination, he saw that the burnings weren’t that bad. The worse ones, however, were at the base of Hawks’ wings – where the skin on his back was the most sensitive.

”They hurt you there directly, so taking care of it would be extra painful too,” he constated. ”I never would’ve thought the Commission was this bad. Oh, wait, I did.”

To those words, Hawks’ whole body stiffened and he perked his head up. The sight in the mirror took his breath away. Dabi was standing behind him with his eyes literally ablaze. Seeing the slightly uncomfortable look in his patient’s eyes, Dabi closed his and took a deep breath. He decided that he would be as gentle as possible. It was not enough for Hawks not to make pained little gasps, though. Dabi leaned forward, so his mouth was next to Hawks’ ear and whispered.

”You’re doing great, little bird! It’ll be over in a few minutes, ‘kay?”

”Uhu,” Hawks mumbled, his mouth quirking up in a small smile. ”I’ve had to bear worse than this.” Needless to say those words made Dabi’s blood boil – literally.

After finishing tending Hawks’ wounds, Dabi took him by the wrist and pulled him out of the bathroom. When they reached it, he pushed him down on the sofa, then sat down himself. Hawks sent him a look from the corner of his eyes and Dabi knew he had several questions.

”You’re too good at this,” Hawks stated and Dabi tried really hard to keep his composure. ”How many times have you done this before?”

”I have a fire quirk, Hawks,” Dabi said as calm as possible, turning towards the other. ”This is like an everyday activity for me.” Hawks narrowed his eyes and Dabi visibly shrank.

”No, you are too good at this. Let me guess, you have been getting wounds like these since you were a child.” Now, it was Dabi who narrowed his eyes.

”What about you, then?” He spat and Hawks closed his eyes. When he reopened them, Dabi saw determination in them.

”The Commission took me in when I was five- Uh, Dabi? Your arms are steaming.” Hawks said warily, having no idea what to do.

It was true. Dabi was so enraged, that he wasn’t being able to keep his quirk in check. It only happened a few times before – mostly when his father hurt his mother – or worse – Shouto.

”You were only a fucking five year old,” Dabi said and Hawks let out a little laugh, without any humor in it.

”Yeah, but I wanted to be a hero and save others so bad I didn’t think about the consequences.”

Suddenly, Dabi wrapped his arm around Hawks’ shoulder and pulled him on his chest. Hawks let out a surprised chirp, but then closed his eyes with a sigh.

”We are the same in this, birdie,” Dabi mumbled, resting his head on the top of Hawks’. ”We know pain too well.” Dabi could feel Hawks’ smile on his chest.

”We’re kind of like soulmates, huh?
