Chapter 1: prologue 1

Chapter Text

Yoongi was barely on his second drink when he heard lyrics that sprung up unidentified feelings in his chest.

In the cold dawn air, I open my eyes unknowingly

He was proud to say that he was someone that could handle his alcohol, he definitely wasn’t a lightweight, but he had no other explanation for the way that his chest seemed to squeeze his heart or the way that he seemed short on breath all of a sudden.

He whipped his head toward the man on the small stage at the front of the bar. The man was too far away from him to be able to tell what he looked like, but his voice alone was enough. It was beautiful.

“Hyung!”

He jumped, turning back to Jimin, and suddenly remembering why he was here in the first place.

Jimin had called him in tears earlier that day, saying how he needed someone to talk to. Jungkook had a final to study for anyways, so with a kiss goodbye, off he went. Turns out Jimin and Taehyung still hadn’t made up from their last fight. Which was surprising to Yoongi since they never seriously fought about anything. They were model soulmates those two.

“Are you even listening to me?” Jimin pouted back to him.

Yoongi nodded absentmindedly, sparing a glance towards the man who had just ended his song, bowing in an almost shy manner. “Thank you,” The man spoke in a deep voice.

Even the way he spoke was pretty.

He forced himself to snap out of it, putting his attention back on Jimin.

“Yeah, sorry, I’m listening.” He nodded, waiting for Jimin to continue his story.

“Well, he hasn’t talked to me in like two weeks! He doesn’t even leave me little drawings on my arm like he usually would either.” He sniffled, looking the most miserable that Yoongi had ever seen Jimin.

“Okay, but, you haven’t really reached out to him either.” Yoongi reasoned with him.

“But–“

“But nothing, Jimin-ah. One of you is going to have to be the bigger person and if you really miss him that much maybe it’ll be you. Besides, trust me that he hasn’t been much better. He’s always crying to Kook about it.” He took another swing of his beer, “I still can’t believe this is over some dumplings.”

Jimin seemed to think about it, chugging down a drink, drinks that Yoongi has lost count of. He turned back to the bar’s stage, tuning out the new person that was singing. Without realizing it, his eyes started to search for the mystery man, whose voice he couldn’t get out of his head. He shook his head, sighing, this was wrong. He wasn’t doing anything really, but still, it felt wrong.

Suddenly there was a screech of a chair being pushed back, and Jimin was on his feet again.

“You’re right, hyung! I’m going to ask him to meet up!” The small man was rushing out in a hurry, as fast as his drunk legs could carry him at least.

Yoongi rose in a panic, fishing out whatever cash he had and leaving it on their table before he ran after his friend.

“At least let me get you a cab!”

It’s been almost a week since Yoongi had heard the mystery man sing. He didn’t know why he couldn’t get him out of his head, all he really knew is that he felt something tugging him towards this man that he had never met before. His lyrics ringing in his head like a broken record.

If love and hate are the same word I love you Seoul

He felt a body hug him from behind, causing guilt to spread through him.

“Hey,” mumbled Jungkook into his neck, “whatcha thinking about?”

Yoongi put down the plate that he had been washing, wiping his hands swiftly on the hand towel. He had to tell him, even if he hadn’t even done anything. The feeling was killing him.

“How likely is it to have more than one soulmate?”

“Huh?”

Jungkook rounded on him, looking at him with a bewildered look on his face. Yoongi couldn’t help but giggle, both because his boyfriend appeared adorable to him and because he wanted to try and lighten the weight on his chest. He wrapped his arms around Jungkook’s back, bringing his face to neck, taking a deep breath.

“Last week,” he started, “when I went to the bar with Jimin. There was a guy there, at open mic, and I felt… I can’t even describe it. The only and last time I felt that way was when I met you.” He confessed.

Jungkook’s body stiffened slightly, his heart dropping. “Oh,” he didn’t want to ask. “Did you, um,”

Yoongi looked up at him, eyes wide. “Hey,” he rushed out, “You know that I would never do anything behind your back.”

He cupped his face in his hands, kissing him sweetly.

“I would never ever do that to you, I promise. I’m already so in love with you.” Yoongi promised.

Jungkook knew that, of course he knew that. Yoongi had never been anything but good to him. He had been head over heels for the shorter man from the moment that he met him, both of them instantly realizing that they were soulmates by the paint patterns scattered across their hands. Yoongi had always been good to him since then.

Yoongi kissed him again before continuing.

“I’d be content with only having one soulmate, you’re more than enough. But it just got me thinking, how likely it is to have more than one. There’s no other explanation for what I felt when I heard him sing.”

“But,” Jungkook was also having a hard time coming up with another explanation. “If you had another soulmate wouldn’t you have noticed someone other than me leaving writing on you? Wouldn’t he have tried to get your attention by now?”

Oh, Yoongi hadn’t thought about that.

He groaned, burying his face back into Jungkook’s chest again. Jungkook sighed, hugging his small boyfriend tightly.

“It’s actually not that uncommon.” He finally said. Yoongi hummed questioningly. “Having two soulmates I mean. It isn’t too uncommon. And well, if you did happen to have another soulmate, I can’t be upset. I just want you to be happy, hyung.”

He felt Yoongi hug him back tighter.

“Do you mean it?” His voice came out muffled.

“As long as you don’t stop loving me.” He tried joking.

He was almost startled by the fierce look in his eyes when Yoongi looked up him.

“I could never stop loving you, Jungkook-ah.”

He felt as though his heart could burst when his hyung reached up to kiss him again.

The next night found both Yoongi and Jungkook back at the bar. Jimin had invited them, saying that Taehyung had a surprise, most likely something to do with an open mic. And now with the excuse of going to support a friend, Yoongi and Jungkook both knew that they were there for other reasons as well.

“What if you’re right though?” Hesitated Yoongi before entering the bar. “If I actually had another soulmate, I would’ve noticed someone else’s writing and stuff on me, right?”

Jungkook shrugged, ushering his boyfriend inside.

“We don’t know for sure, hyung.” He replied as they walked into the bar hand in hand.

And so for the rest of the night, they tried to take their mind off the subject. Every now and then they stole glances at the performers, Jungkook looking at him as if asking if that were them. They were beginning to lose hope, maybe he wasn’t here tonight.

“Hey, so, where’s Taehyung?” Yoongi questioned.

“He’s on his way, he said he had to pick up a friend first.” Jimin shrugged, but it was obvious that he was giddy to see his soulmate.

The friends continued to drink and catch up with each other until they heard a familiar voice coming from the stage. Their heads turned to the back to see Taehyung standing there with someone they didn’t recognize next to him.

“When did he even get here!?” Jungkook whisper-yelled.

“– for my soulmate, Jiminie. Ah, and thank you Namjoonie hyung for helping me write and perform this song.” Finished Taehyung, as the first notes of the song started playing.

If Yoongi was being honest, he only really caught the last part of whatever Taehyung was saying because he couldn’t take his eyes off the man next to him.

Namjoonie hyung.

That’s what Taehyung had called him. Yoongi hadn’t gotten a good look at the mysterious man from the week before, but something in his chest was telling him that it was him. Even if Yoongi couldn’t remember his face, he knew he could recognize him anywhere. There was no mistaking him, especially when the man opened his mouth to start rapping.

Today, too, I go on living just enough. Keeping in step, wearing my feet out just enough.

Yoongi had already been impressed, but right now, he could feel pure adrenaline flowing through his veins. He was just amazing, and he was making Yoongi forget how to breathe.

“Who’s that…” Jungkook said suddenly.

Yoongi jumped, startled out of his thoughts, and turned to look at his boyfriend who seemed to be staring towards the stage with stars in his eyes.

“What?” He whispered back.

“That guy… with Taehyung.”

Yoongi followed his gaze, heart beginning to beat a mile a minute when he realized who his boyfriend was pointing out.

“That’s– that’s him! Kook-ah, that’s the guy from last week.”

Somehow, Jungkook’s eyes managed to get even wider than they already were. He met Yoongi’s gaze, a swarm of thoughts and emotions flooding both his head and chest.

“That’s him?” He breathed out.

Yoongi could only nod with eyes just as wide. Before they knew it, they missed the rest of the song while they were stuck in their own heads. Yoongi felt a short burst of panic when he realized that they were no longer on the stage. He didn’t know what he would do with himself if he lost sight of the man again just like before.

“Tae!” Jimin was up in a flash, racing towards his soulmate and into his arms.

Jungkook smiled fondly at his two best friends. Yet, he couldn’t help but block out their chatter, because the man that was on the stage with Taehyung was walking towards them, and he was sure his heart was about to pop out of his chest if he got any closer.

Taehyung seemed to spot him as well, and grinned as he motioned him over. He pecked Jimin on the lips once more before he all but dragged Namjoon to their table, still smiling widely.

“Guys! I wanna introduce you to Namjoon hyung! He started working at the company a few weeks ago. He’s been really helping me a lot with lyrics and stuff.” He whispered the last part a little shyly.

Namjoon was tall, really tall. Maybe even taller than Jungkook. His platinum hair stood out against his tanned skin, and Yoongi’s heart nearly stopped beating when he saw dimples appear in his cheeks. Even then, what stood out to Yoongi the most was his clothes. Covered from neck to toe, no signs of skin aside from his face and hands were visible. It was something odd to do. When finding your soulmate relied on recognizing writing on one’s skin, covering up was not a common thing to do. Unless, Namjoon had already found his soulmate–

Namjoon bowed slightly before taking a seat next to Taehyung, greeting them with a smile.

“Hello, it’s nice to meet you. Tae’s told me a lot about you guys.”

“Yoongi hyung, he’s a producer!” Exclaimed Taehyung suddenly, “I think you two could be really good friends.”

“Oh, are you also into music?” Namjoon directed the question towards Yoongi, but honestly, everything felt as though it were moving underwater for him at the moment. Yoongi could feel his head nodding on its own.

“Yeah, I’m also a producer. I’m uh,” he winced, hearing his voice crack out of nerves, “I’m actually going to be interviewing for a job at the same company soon…” he trailed off. It might just be his wishful thinking, but he was beginning to realize that everything seemed to keep leading him back to Namjoon.

Taehyung seemed to be in a really good mood that night since he quickly took over the conversation again. Everything was still moving way too slowly for Yoongi. He briefly recalls Taehyung introducing Jimin and Jungkook, his soulmate managing to blurt out a shy “hello”.

Suddenly Jungkook was coughing, kicking Yoongi’s foot to stop his staring, turning the others’ attention towards him. Yoongi glared at his soulmate, before standing up quickly, dragging Jungkook up by his hand.

“Sorry! Jungkookie wants to get another drink,” he rushed out, “we’ll be back in a bit.”

The two walked rapidly towards the bar, actually ordering a drink to stall for a bit. Jungkook looked at his boyfriend worriedly, the smaller man slumped on a stool, picking at his nails. He sighed, deciding to sit down next to him, his hand wrapping around the other’s.

“You’re gonna hurt your fingers if you keep biting them.” He said, kissing his hands gently.

Yoongi smiled, the weight on his chest slowly easing away, although not completely. The bartender set down their drink in front of them with a nod, and Jungkook took it, mumbling a quiet “thank you”. He took a swing of it, as if he were gathering courage.

“For what it’s worth,” Jungkook started, “I think… I think I might’ve felt something too.”

“You did?” Yoongi asked, hope laced into his voice.

A small laugh escaped Jungkook’s lips, eyes and nose crinkling just the way that Yoongi loved.

“Like you said, hyung. The last time I felt this way was when I met you… It just felt right.”

Yoongi nodded, knowing exactly the feeling that he was referring to.

“But,” he continued, giving Jungkook a wary look, “we don’t know anything about him. He didn’t even spare us a second glance or anything.”

“Like you said, we hardly know him, so why would we feel this way about a total stranger? He must feel something too, right hyung?”

“So…” Yoongi hesitated before continuing, “are we thinking that we could actually have another soulmate we didn’t even know about?”

“Maybe…” Jungkook mumbled while looking towards the floor.

Yoongi looked at their intertwined hands, rubbing his thumb over Jungkook’s hand. Jungkook looked unsure of himself, something that Yoongi was not going to allow. “Look,” he sighed, “He’s Taehyung’s friend, I’m sure we’ll get the chance to know him, figure out what and why we’re both feeling what we’re feeling. Get to know him as well.”

He stood up, wrapping his arms around Jungkook’s waist, pulling him out of his seat. Yoongi may be smaller, Jungkook managing to tower over him when he wore his big chunky shoes, but Yoongi was still his hyung. And as his hyung, he was going to make sure that Jungkook was okay. Jungkook leaned down, his face stuffed into Yoongi’s neck.

“My big baby,” chuckled Yoongi softly, chuckles turning into giggles when Jungkook playfully stepped on his foot. “It’s going to be okay Kook-ah. Even if the worst happens, you still have me… I don’t think I’m that bad of a choice.”

He said it as a joke but Jungkook only squeezed him tighter.

“You’re the best hyung, and I love you. The universe knew what it was doing when it made you mine, and I’ve never wanted anyone else.” He breathed unsteadily, “But, I just think that I could also love him, which is scary because I don’t know a single thing about him but my heart… my heart just knows, y’know?”

Yoongi kissed the top of his head, nodding. “Yeah, I know… I think I could also love him. But, even if I get my hopes up and nothing happens, I’ll be content knowing I’ll always have you.”

“And I’ll always love you.” Jungkook whispered, separating himself for a moment to hold his pinky up. The gummy smile that Jungkook adored so much appeared onto Yoongi’s face.

“Always love you.” Yoongi whispered back, linking their pinkies and sealing it with a kiss.
