Chapter 6: A Welcomed Surprise
English went by in a jiffy, so did math, science, social studies, and the rest of the morning subjects. I spaced out so much that I couldn’t remember anything that happened, at all. Good thing it’s lunch now, I can gather my thoughts in peace. I considered buying food in the cafeteria and taking it outside, near the trees by the entrance. It would be so relaxing to eat there, but that would be a little too time consuming. I need to walk back quickly as soon as I finish eating or I won’t make it in time for the next class. Regardless of the risk, I went with the plan anyway. I bought some clubhouse sandwiches from the cafeteria and got some cola from the vending machine on the way out. As soon as I got out of the building, I was hit with sunlight so warm it shocked me a little, but it was definitely a nice feeling. The light ambience outside offers a great contrast to the stressful environment inside. It was a feeling I could get addicted to, a feeling I could get lost in. Soon enough, I reached the area and sat down near the big cherry blossom tree. It gave a nice shade, allowing me to relax while eating. I opened the first sandwich and took a bite. It was definitely a couple of steps above any sandwich I’ve had from my middle school. It had a mellow taste and it wasn’t too heavy for my stomach. Just as I was about to take another bite, I saw a familiar face in the distance.
It was Shinsou.
I would totally be freaking out right now especially with what happened during homeroom, but I’m too hungry that I can’t afford to focus on it. It’s a good thing our eyes didn’t meet, it let me resume my eating unbothered. Eye contact would’ve obligated me to greet him, or at least, wave at him, and I’m sure we both know we wouldn’t like an awkward interaction like that.
Well, I ought to think again, because after I finished my sandwich, I looked up, only to see him approaching me.
What is he thinking!?
I put down my soda and fixed the creases of my uniform. I tried to be inconspicuous about it though. I acted like I didn’t know he was approaching me until he was right beside me. I was pretty calm and dandy until he said-
“I could just write the paper for you if you want.”
Wow, he actually offered it up. I’ve considered the possibilities, and doing it this way would normally be beneficial for both of us but…
“Nope, that won’t do.”
“What?”
I saw his brows furrow a little. I knew he was shocked with my answer, but small signs of irritation made their way through his face. Well, his offer practically just got rejected, so I get the notion behind his feelings.
“That’s too boring, don’t you think? And besides, how can I be so sure that what you’ll write in my ‘paper’ is true? You might not even write it in the first place. I’m not going to risk all of that. I need to see everything with my own eyes, write everything with my own hands.”
“Even if you do that, if I really wanted to throw you off, I could just act differently, tell you wrong things.”
“True, but if it happens right in front of me, I have a chance to decipher it, evaluate if what you’re doing is true, if what you’re saying is trustworthy. Besides, you don’t look like someone who can act convincingly, can you?”
I smirked at him with that remark. All he had for a reply was a slight click of the tongue and a sigh.
“Fine. You win. Do whatever you want.”
“Woah, you agreed pretty quickly. I thought you’d try and nag me around a little more. You’re not angry, are you?”
“Your doubts are well placed, and I’m pretty much used to people doubting me.” He muttered under his breath.
With that sentence, he walked away, not giving me time to reply. It’s not like I had any snarky reply prepared anyway, especially with that tone. “I’m pretty much used to people doubting me.” We barely just talked and you dare drop that on me Shinsou? My conscience will definitely keep on tugging at me unless I do something about it. I guess I’ll try and make it up to him. I was a little harsh on him anyway.
To be honest, trust isn’t the main reason why I declined him. It’s because I pretty much wrote everything about him already on my first paper. Knowing him, he’ll probably just write his physical characteristics, like height, weight, or etc. Those aren’t enough, those won’t impress anyone. Moreover, I’ve already written half of those quantified physical attributes so they won’t exactly be useful to me anyway. If I told him that I’ve already written almost everything about him, he’d definitely get creeped out, thinking I’m a stalker or something. If that ever happens, I’d have to tell him all about my quirk, and I really just can’t afford to do that. My quirk is one of those abilities that lose half of their impact when people become aware of them.
After I finished my soda, I headed back to class. I’ve still got a few subjects to deal with, and if he counts, maybe Shinsou is one of them. On the way to class, I passed by a green haired boy and a brown-haired girl. They seem friendly towards each other. Normally, I wouldn’t notice these things, but there was something different about those two. It wasn’t something I could tell right away, so I just dismissed it and tabbed it for a later date. Anyway, as I sat down, I saw Shinsou, staring outside the window.
“Looking pretty out of it aren’t you? Do you space out often? Should I write that down?” I said with just a little hint of a sarcastic tone.
“Write what you want.” He replied, still staring outside the window.
“Are you sure you want to act that way towards me? We’ll be spending a week together you know? These eyes won’t leave you anywhere you go just so we’re clear. I intend to get the highest grade possible, and you can’t stop me.” I said. Well, the last part is true, but the real reason I don’t want to leave this guy alone is because this is my way of paying him back for never leaving my mind.
“Why don’t you try and force the information out of me then? I’ll show you just what I can do.” He smirks.
“Feeling confident, are you? I’m not scared though. I know you won’t hurt me.” More like he can’t, for the most part.
“And what makes you think that?”
“You look like you avoid combat as much as possible. One look at your physique is all I need to confirm that. Tall and slender, but not exactly lean. Your pale complexion and eye bags also tell me you’re probably low on stamina.” I tried to cut back on the details as much as possible. Can’t have him finding about my quirk and my knowledge of his identity this early on.
“I’ve been read like a book. Fine, you win, again. You can write all that down.” He said as he slumps back on his desk, looking like he’s about to try and take a nap.
“Will do.” I’ve already written that though, so no, not really.
This is going to be one interesting week.
