“Lan Zhan.”
Wei Wuxian set down his chopsticks hesitantly. Across the table, Lan Wangji looked up.
“What’s wrong? Not to your taste?”
Wei Wuxian shook his head. No, of course not. The spicy chicken and mapo tofu were delicious as always. “I’ve just been thinking…the fifteen-month mark is coming up.”
There was a question in Lan Wangji’s eyes.
“Since we got married,” he clarified. A wistful smile tugged at his lips. “The contract is almost up.”
Slowly, Lan Wangji followed his example and put down his chopsticks as well. Wood met the ceramic bowl with a tiny clink. “Mn.”
Indeed, less than two years ago, Yunmeng and Yunshen’s official Weibo accounts had simultaneously posted an announcement that caught the business world by surprise: Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji had gotten married. Immediately, the internet flooded with congratulations…and suspicion.
Why then? Why all of a sudden?
The second heir of the Lan family and the adopted son of the Jiangs were not known for having any interaction, after all. And it was no secret that the Nightless Sky corporation had been eyeing the Yunmeng stocks recently. This new family relation would be a perfect excuse for the Lans to extend a helping hand and, this way, the Wens would think twice about offending two powerful families at once. The timing was all too coincidental.
The people who speculated weren’t exactly wrong, either. In fact, they really hit the nail on the head. Too bad they’d never get a change to pat themselves on the back for it.
When Lan Xichen had approached the Jiangs with his family’s offer, he’d come prepared with an extensive, thorough plan that left them both shocked and impressed. Staring down at the contract, Wei Wuxian had thought: why does it feel like a creepy amount of planning was put into this???
But what else was there to do? The deal was way too attractive. So, when Jiang-shushu had pulled him aside that night and put a concerned hand on his shoulder, Wei Wuxian had only laughed it off.
“I’m more than happy to do this for our family. Besides, it’s only for eighteen months — it’ll be over in a flash! And who knows? Maybe having that little stick-in-the-mud as a roommate might be fun.”
There was no wedding, no pomp and circumstance of any kind, but they made sure to be photographed in public occasionally. Wei Wuxian visiting the Lan estate. Wei Wuxian visiting the Yunshen offices, bringing lunch like a considerate husband. The new couple out buying groceries. Eating at a restaurant together.
It was all well received. Almost surprisingly well. The suspicious voices were soon drowned out by a wave of different ones.
Look at the way Lan Wangji gave him his jacket! Look at the way he smoothed down his hair! Look at the way he wiped his mouth!!! Ahhhhh!!! WKDL!!! Why isn’t my husband like that??!?
WC? They’re childhood friends? Friends to lovers? AWSL! This dog food! I’ve been well fed!!! This CP is real!
The topics of #Yunshen Yunmeng relations#, #Lan Wangji Wei Wuxian marriage# and #WangXian national CP# trended for a few days, even making it beyond the business circle. The couple even had a super topic made for them. Why? They were simply too good looking, that’s why. There was no lack of comments lamenting that these two weren’t actual celebrities. What a waste.
Alas, the WangXian fans would soon have their hearts broken. True love isn’t real! Wei Wuxian could already imagine them complaining as they unfollow the super topic one by one.
The only problem was…Wei Wuxian’s heart would break as well. With only three months left, he could already feel it cracking at the seams.
And who’s fault was that? Lan Wangji’s, of course.
This marriage of convenience came out of nowhere but it wasn’t like those arranged marriages where the two people met each other for the first time a few days before the wedding. No, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji had known each other for quite a long time. In fact, that was why Wei Wuxian had faced his new husband with trepidation at first.
The two of them had met in high school and had gone to the same university and, despite Wei Wuxian’s best efforts, they could barely be considered friends after all these years. Well, they did spend a lot of time together and Wei Wuxian did shamelessly trick many meals out of him but that was besides the point. Lan Wangji rarely approached him voluntarily. Maybe just a couple times.
The point was he knew Lan Wangji found him very annoying! Lan Wangji said so himself!
So when Lan Wangji, of all people, agreed to this arrangement, Wei Wuxian thought he might be dreaming up until he held the little red booklet certifying the union in his own hands.
He was immensely grateful though. After months of sleepless nights, stressing about the Jiang family’s situation, this man in white had truly swooped in and taken the burden right off his shoulders. He could finally breathe again. And so he decided he would be on his best behaviour.
Lan Wangji was already sacrificing so much. This person who’d refused to even touch his hand had to endure the task of playing his loving husband, sliding an arm around his waist, using the same spoon as him, letting him snuggle in his jacket…all in public, no less! Wei Wuxian had to admit that he was very impressed by Lan Wangji’s performance.
Not only that, the apartment they moved into was originally meant to be Lan Wangji’s actual marriage home so Wei Wuxian felt even more like an intruder. He was happy to play up the loving couple image in public but he wanted to at least respect Lan Wangji’s boundaries at home. Naturally, they had separate bedrooms but Wei Wuxian went an extra step to keep out of Lan Wangji’s line of sight at first. However, it wasn’t a realistic long-term plan for two people living under the same roof and, coupled with Wei Wuxian’s own outgoing personality and weird hobby for teasing Lan Wangji, it only lasted about a month.
Yet, when Wei Wuxian’s chattering started back up, Lan Wangji never once complained. Instead, he acknowledged his every word and indulged his every whim, however inane, and…well, was it hard to believe that Wei Wuxian got lost in those sincere eyes?
Even worse, ever since Wei Wuxian stopped avoiding Lan Wangji, it was like Lan Wangji fell under some curse. Otherwise, why would he suddenly become the ideal husband who picked him up at work, who bought him his favourite snacks, who cooked him hangover congee and spicy dishes despite not being able to eat them himself?
Wei Wuxian could understand Lan Wangji’s efforts in the public eye. As a man who treated every task seriously, it was no surprise that Lan Wangji would even ace this kind of assignment. But what about when the cameras weren’t watching? Why play the ‘husband’ role to such an extent? At this point, Wei Wuxian was convinced that it was just to mess with him. And if this was all an elaborate plot to pay him back for all the teasing and nagging during their younger years…well, Lan Wangji had succeeded.
It was only a couple weeks ago that Wei Wuxian finally faced up to how far he’d fallen. There was really no way to ignore it any longer. Every time his fingers accidentally brushed Lan Wangji’s across the table, his heart stuttered; every time he called his name, he had to take a deep breath. He was mortified that one time he stared too long at Lan Wangji’s annoyingly perfect face and the object of his affection had asked him why his face was pink.
He, Wei Wuxian, had a crush on his husband! How utterly embarrassing! He could already hear Jiang Cheng laughing at him.
He’d almost let it slip, too, that night he dragged his buddies out drinking. His usual iron liver had let him down and he’d gotten more and more out of control, eventually losing track of himself completely. He’d woke up at home the next morning without any recollection of how he got back and he only knew he didn’t say anything explicit because Nie Huaisang and the others would never let him off the hook otherwise. Their WeChat group remained devoid of any mention of his greatest secret.
Of course, the alcohol didn’t achieve anything, either. His feelings were not dulled. His interest in ladies wasn’t reignited. He didn’t even beat the others at drinking. If anything, his life became even harder because recently Lan Wangji started smiling at him. Just small smiles but Wei Wuxian swore on his life that Lan Wangji could end wars with them. Holy fuck.
And soon, he had to let it all go.
Rest in pieces, Wei Wuxian.

That’s right, that’s right. We don’t have to be Lan-zong to see how much Lan-zuzhang loves his husband.
03.
Stepping into the Yunshen headquarters, Wei Wuxian was already starting to regret it. Whose great idea was this again? Oh, right. This fucking idiot.
Would it make people think badly of Lan Wangji? They wouldn’t right? Any person with eyes and ears would see that Lan Wangji was not in the wrong. Right? Besides, it really was a good lead up to what would come later. It would be better this way, in the end.
“Wei-xiansheng?”
Wei Wuxian turned to see a woman waving at him from the reception desk. Taking a deep breath, he schooled his expression and walked over. “Qiao-jie.”
Out of earshot of a wider audience, Qiao Yue’s air of professionalism loosened and her voice grew more friendly. “Xiao Wei! Are you here to see Lan-zuzhang? You didn’t come for lunch though? It’s already close to the end of the day.”
“Mn. I’ll just head up now.”
Qiao Yue frowned. “Is everything okay? You…look unhappy.”
“Hah, it’s nothing. Just some personal things. Well, I’ll see you later!” With a nonchalant wave of his hand, Wei Wuxian headed towards the private elevators, leaving the woman to stare at his back with a thoughtful look on her face.
… … …
Ping!
The doors slid open to reveal the upper-floor office that Wei Wuxian had become very familiar with.
“Wei-xiansheng!”
“Welcome, Wei-xiansheng.”
“Oh, didn’t expect to see you here today, Xiao Wei.”
“Hello, Wei-xiansheng.”
As he walked out, the people he passed all paused to greet him with varying degrees of friendliness or polite respect. Normally, he might’ve stopped to make small chat so, when he only replied with a few nods of acknowledgement, he successfully piqued the curiosity of those who knew his personality well. Eyes followed him all the way to his destination.
Lan Wangji’s personal office was furthest back, tucked away in a corner. Through the glass walls, Wei Wuxian could see his supposed husband sitting behind his desk as expected, typing away on his computer. Busy as usual. Right before Wei Wuxian’s hand touched the door handle, Lan Wangji looked up as if sensing something.
“Wei Ying. You’re here.”
“Mn.” The door swung shut behind him with a dull thud.
Often, Wei Wuxian would draw the blinds to give them some privacy when he came to visit. Heavens knew what the employees outside must think they were doing…actually, Wei Wuxian did know. He’d been graciously invited to the public employee WeChat group though no one dared chat too openly there. However, he’d come across a Yunshen post on another popular forum platform that had much more juicy gossip.
…
3112L
Lan-zuzhang looked unusually relaxed all afternoon! I went out for lunch but I bet you-know-who came by today!
3113L
Wow, they were in there for a long time today! Do you think they were…? Hehe.
3114L
Boss’s husband stayed the entire day and fell asleep. What tired him out so much that the boss had to carry him out? Ah, just another day of eating dog food.
…
Wei Wuxian used to find it all very amusing and even teased Lan Wangji about it, showing him the thread that only kept getting longer with no hint of slowing.
Today, the blinds remained conspicuously undrawn.
Wei Wuxian sat down on one of the sofas next to the window. The view was incredible, overlooking the sprawling city below, but Wei Wuxian was in no mood to enjoy it. In front of him, the simple yet elegant tea table was always prepared with refreshments and Wei Wuxian poured himself a cup of water from the insulated jug.
“Wei Ying, give me a second to finish up.”
Wei Wuxian took a small sip. Ah. Too hot. He put the cup down.
“Lan Wangji.”
He heard the click-clack of the keyboard fall silent. He didn’t look up. Even when Lan Wangji sat down next to him, he chose to keep his eyes fixed on the table.
“Wei Ying?”
Fingers brushed against his hand clenched in his lap and he jerked back.
“Why are you always like this?”
“Hm?”
“I said, why are you always like this?!” The walls were thin but Wei Wuxian knew them to be surprisingly soundproof. Still, he had no doubt that the people outside would be able to hear him at this level, albeit muffled. He made no effort to lower his voice. “Don’t you know I get tired, too?!”
With a wild sweep of his hand, the teacup shattered on the ground, spilling liquid all over the table and floor.
“Lan Wangji! I really—!”
“Be careful.” Wei Wuxian froze as his hand, still hovering in the air, was enveloped in a gentle grip. “Did you get burned?”
“What? Oh, no, no, I’m fine.” The reply came out naturally and Wei Wuxian blinked before realizing something. Wait…
He leaned in quickly to whisper in Lan Wangji’s ear. “Lan Zhan! Did you forget what we talked about earlier?”
“Mn.” Lan Wangji reached up to brush a stray hair from his forehead. “Be good. If you’re tired, you can take a nap here. We can go home together in an hour, okay?”
So Wei Wuxian ended up doing just that.
… … …
Later that evening, curled up in bed, Wei Wuxian pulled out his phone and tapped into a certain forum thread. At first glance, the results looked unexpectedly promising.

Wei Wuxian propped his head up, elbow against the table. He peered thoughtfully up at the man clearing the table.
“Not a bad idea, right? This way, if we can establish some rumours, it’ll be more believable when we announce the divorce later.”
“Mn.”
“We can start smaller but it still needs to be big enough that people will actually notice.”
“Mn.”
“You’re agreeing then? It won’t be too disruptive to your work, right?”
“Mn.”
“…Okay. Well, you can leave it to me. When it comes to it, you just need to remember the script, okay?”
“Mn.”
05.
A week later, Wei Wuxian found himself back in the lobby of Yunshen headquarters.
“Qiao-jie, do me a favour and call Lan-zuzhang, please?”
“Xiao Wei, is there something wrong again? You usually go straight up.”
Wei Wuxian purposely ignored the receptionist’s concerned gaze. “I don’t want to go up today. Can you call him down for me?”
“If you say so…?”
It took less than five minutes for Lan Wangji to appear. When he did, Wei Wuxian could feel the eyes automatically drifting their way, drawn by the man’s very presence. Wei Wuxian couldn’t blame them, either – this husband of his was always, easily, the best looking person in any room. Of course he knew that too and, these days more than ever, his disobedient heart never let him forget it.
“Wei Ying? Why didn’t you come up?”
The question sounded very genuine and Wei Wuxian stopped admiring Lan Wangji’s face long enough to give him a thumbs up in his mind, reminded of the task at hand. Well, he couldn’t drop the ball either.
The receptionist area was on a slightly raised platform, giving Wei Wuxian a height advantage. He straightened from where he’d been leaning slightly against the marble desk and narrowed his eyes down at Lan Wangji.
“Lan-zuzhang.” He folded his arms. “Don’t act like you don’t know why.”
“I don’t know why.”
“You really want me to say it here?”
The entire lobby was hushed now, Wei Wuxian noted with satisfaction. But the next second, he nearly stumbled.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji said. “Let’s go to my office first?”
All Wei Wuxian wanted to say was: Hello? Gege? Did you forget the script? Again?! Shouldn’t you be scolding me for being unreasonable and making a scene? I told you so many times over dinner yesterday! Speaking of which, that braised fish with pepper was very good…
Thinking on his feet, Wei Wuxian tried his best to divert them back onto the right track. He raised his voice and lifted his chin as haughtily as he could. “Go to your office? Why? What if I don’t want to?”
“That’s fine, too. Whatever you like.”
Wei Wuxian’s eye twitched. Lan Zhan, ah! How am I supposed to follow that up? A little desperate, he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. “Oh, yeah?! Well then I don’t want to anymore! Why should I listen to you?! You’re not even my real hu—!”
His mouth snapped shut. Shit, that would’ve been too on the nose. He cleared his throat awkwardly. Even though there wasn’t much hope, he silently begged Lan Wangji to help him out and distract from his near slip-up. Yet when Lan Wangji did speak, Wei Wuxian regretted thinking that.
“Wei Ying…if I did something wrong, please forgive me. I will do better next time.” Lan Wangji’s head was slightly lowered as if he’d really done something wrong and he glanced up through his lashes at Wei Wuxian.
Meanwhile, Wei Wuxian felt as though a bolt of lightning had coursed through his body. Those fucking eyes—! If he didn’t know any better, he might’ve thought Lan Wangji was actually sad! But he did know better! Right? Right?! His feet, suddenly uncoordinated, moved beneath him without his command and he felt his centre of gravity shift. He’d accidentally stepped off the raised platform.
With Wei Wuxian’s reflexes, he could easily regain his balance but Lan Wangji had already darted forward and Wei Wuxian felt arms around him before he even registered what had happened. The two men were around the same height yet Wei Wuxian had the illusion that his entire being was enveloped in Lan Wangji’s embrace. Then, he felt a warm breath of air against his ear.
“Let’s go up first, okay?”
And there was nothing Wei Wuxian could do except stutter, “O-okay?”
Aish.
There was always next time.
… … …
That evening, Wei Wuxian pulled out his phone reluctantly, feeling a distinct sense of déjà vu.

3521L
That’s it. I quit. Why can’t I have a husband like Lan Wangji?

Wei Wuxian maneuvered through the crowded café and dropped into the seat across from Wen Qing, sliding his peace offering across the table. The latte with an extra shot of espresso was accepted but Wen Qing’s judging stare did not subside. Even Wei Wuxian’s winning grin had no effect.
It was all within expectation, though, and Wei Wuxian himself was a little embarrassed that he had to recruit help. After several more failed attempts at stirring up productive rumours, Wei Wuxian wanted to switch things up a little. He didn’t even tell Lan Wangji this time – as if that would help. It was as if Wei Wuxian had finally stumbled on something Lan Wangji wasn’t good at. Maybe he was simply too busy these days to remember Wei Wuxian’s carefully planned scripts. Ah, well.
But there was only one month left so they didn’t have much time. Wei Wuxian didn’t have anything left to offer except do this for Lan Wangji who’d helped him so much while enduring his presence for more than a year. As much as it hurt to think of the coming separation, Wei Wuxian determinedly pushed those feelings aside. He couldn’t be selfish. Not for this. Plus, he was willing to play the villain in this story, if that’s what it took.
“How much longer?” Wen Qing asked. “I don’t have all day, you know.”
Wei Wuxian glanced at the clock. “Just a few more minutes.”
“You’re sure this will make any difference?”
“Aiya, of course it will.” Wei Wuxian leaned in closer. The lunch time bustle easily drowned out their words but Wei Wuxian lowered his voice anyway. “The offices are right across the street and this place is a favourite for the employees. Besides, I already see a lot of familiar faces. The word will get out for sure.”
“Hm, if you say so. You better keep your promise though.”
“Qing-jie, you’re so stingy! But, yeah, yeah. A month of buying you and Wen Ning lunch – I won’t forget.” Wei Wuxian stuck out his tongue and Wen Qing tsked at him disdainfully.
Wei Wuxian glanced at the clock again. It was about time. He was supposed to meet Lan Wangji here for lunch and Lan Wangji should be arriving soon…
He slapped the table and shot to his feet. “Shit! A-Qing! I totally forgot I was going to meet that person here today! We have to leave before he sees!”
Wen Qing struggled to avoid rolling her eyes but she cooperated, standing slowly. She cleared her throat and put on a strained expression. “You mean your…?”
Nodding, Wei Wuxian tugged on her arm. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw several phones being pulled out and pointing their way. “Sorry about this. I’ll treat you again next time. Let’s go!”
But it was too late. Or, in other words, it was right on time. Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing almost reached the door when it swung open, letting in a tall, smartly dressed figure.
“Ah, Wuxian.”
“…Xichen-ge.”
Huh. Not the right Lan brother. But…the effect would still be the same, right?
Wei Wuxian slowly withdrew his hand from where it lightly rested on Wen Qing’s back. He couldn’t help but notice Lan Xichen’s eyes track his movement and that brow, so similar to his brother’s, creased a tiny fraction. It was exactly the effect Wei Wuxian was after yet he was suddenly doused in a bucket of guilt as if he just got caught red-handed doing something unspeakable by a family member. Not that it was very far off.
After all, Lan Xichen had been surprisingly accommodating of him these past few months. Wei Wuxian half-expected him to ignore him completely or even keep a strict eye on him but, instead, he’d treated him like he’d actually become part of the Lan family. He even went as far as shielding Wei Wuxian from Lan Qiren’s severe stare…and that made him the heavenly emperor in Wei Wuxian’s book. In other words, Lan Xichen had quickly become a big brother he’d never had.
“And this is…?” Lan Xichen smiled politely at Wen Qing but Wei Wuxian nearly shivered. He swore this normally good-natured older brother was channeling Lan Wangji in this moment.
It wasn’t hard to put on an appropriately flustered air. Glancing between the two, Wei Wuxian rubbed his nose and gestured vaguely. “I…um, this is Wen Qing. She’s my…she’s a doctor.”
“Ah, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Dr. Wen.”
“You as well, Lan-xiansheng. You must be…Lan Wangji’s older brother. Wei Wuxian mentioned you to me before.” To her credit, Wen Qing’s pointed pause before mentioning Lan Wangji’s name somehow implied volumes of subtext and it was anyone’s guess as to what she meant. Wei Wuxian wanted to give her a Golden Rooster award right there and then. She must really want that free month of food, he thought.
“That’s correct.” Lan Xichen’s gaze drifted back to Wei Wuxian who felt the sudden urge to stand solider-straight. “Anyway, Wangji’s meeting is running over and he asked me to pass on the message since I was passing by. Wuxian, you can wait for him in the office instead if you’d like. And…since Dr. Wen is here, would you like to join us?” It was a question but somehow left no room for argument.
Before Wen Qing replied, she shot a sideways glance at Wei Wuxian. In that split second, he read loud and clear: you owe me extra for this. “If you don’t mind, I’ll come along then.”
“Lovely.”
… … …
All the way up to Lan Wangji’s department floor, Lan Xichen led the way while the other two trailed behind him side-by-side.
Wei Wuxian didn’t dare go overboard with the acting — it would be less believable that way — so he settled for putting a guiding hand on Wen Qing back occasionally, as he did earlier, trying to make it look natural. He prayed Wen Qing wouldn’t stab him with the scalpel she kept in her purse. Nor Lan Xichen, for that matter, who could probably kill him with a single look. Ever since Lan Xichen had caught his ‘subconscious’ actions as they entered the elevator, the temperature seemed to be steadily dropping around them. Wei Wuxian really couldn’t wait to explain the situation to him later — he didn’t want to ruin his already nonexistent chances with Lan Wangji even further by pissing off the in-laws.
It didn’t get any better when they finally made it to Lan Wangji’s office, the three of them opting to stand awkwardly. The outer office was relatively empty of people with many people out for lunch but whoever remained were all peeking over the dividers in their direction.
Every time Lan Xichen looked in Wei Wuxian’s direction, he involuntarily inched closer to Wen Qing until he was practically hidden behind her. It was really too scary! He couldn’t take much more of this. But just as Wei Wuxian opened his mouth to clarify everything to Lan Xichen, they heard voices outside.
“Lan-zuzhang!”
Lan Wangji had returned.
As he approached, he seemed a little taken-aback by the unexpected guests but his footsteps did not halt. He entered the office and took in the scene before him: his brother standing next to his desk, an unfamiliar woman standing a metre away from him, and Wei Wuxian glued to her side. Something flashed through his eyes when he saw the way Wei Wuxian was clutching at her sleeve.
It was Wen Qing who spoke first, stepping forward — out of Wei Wuxian’s hold — and extending her hand matter-of-factly. “Hello, I’m Wen Qing. You must be Wei Wuxian’s husband.”
Under Lan Xichen’s considering watch, Lan Wangji appeared to relax minutely. He shook her offered hand. “Dr. Wen, a pleasure. Wei Ying has mentioned you before.”
Wei Wuxian was surprised. He was sure he never mentioned Wen Qing’s name more than a couple times and only in passing. Lan Wangji remembered such a tiny detail? Impressive. Then, he blinked when Lan Wangji did not retract his hand, only moving it to hover in front of him, palm up. Without thinking, he placed his own hand on top, unsure of what Lan Wangji wanted. He was simply pulled to stand next to him. Okay, then??
“Ahem,” Lan Xichen coughed. “Now that Wangji is here, I should get back to work. Sorry for intruding earlier. I might’ve misunderstood something.”
“Um, well…”
“Anyhow, please enjoy your lunch. Wangji, Wuxian, I’ll see you later. Dr. Wen, once again, a pleasure to meet you.”
He patted Lan Wangji on the shoulder fondly and he was gone with a final cheery smile.
… … …
When Wen Qing left as well, Wei Wuxian let himself slump back onto the sofa with a breathy sigh.
“Tired?”
“Hm? Oh, no, it’s nothing.”
The day had not gone exactly to plan but Wei Wuxian still considered it mission accomplished. Whoever needed to see the display had seen it. He didn’t feel any sense of achievement though. There was only a sour twinge in his heart. Absently, he lifted a hand to rub at his chest.
The sofa sunk down next to him and he jumped.
“Wei Ying, is there something wrong?”
“You’re not going to ask me what all that was about?” Wei Wuxian asked in return.
“I have some idea.”
Heh, of course Lan Wangji was smart enough to catch on. Get caught on a date with someone else and let the rumours fly. Let people draw their own conclusions when the divorce is announced. Simple.
“Sorry I didn’t tell you beforehand.” Wei Wuxian raised three fingers and shot him a cheeky grin. “For the record, there’s really nothing between Wen Qing and I.”
“I know.”
The next few seconds passed in comfortable silence until Wei Wuxian became more and more acutely aware of Lan Wangji’s warm presence next to him. He had to fight the urge to lean on him. Muscle memory was a scary thing indeed. Quick, a distraction was needed.
“Do you not like this idea? Otherwise, why do you never cooperate with me?” It wasn’t the first time Wei Wuxian had asked this question but he’d never gotten a straight answer. “If you didn’t like it, why didn’t you say so earlier?”
As expected, no answer was forthcoming yet again. But just when Wei Wuxian was resigned to remaining in the dark, Lan Wangji spoke up.
“Are you that committed to it?”
Wei Wuxian looked at him strangely. “Why aren’t you? Obviously it’ll minimize the suspicious voices when we…when we get back to normal. Isn’t that better for everyone involved?”
“Get back to normal? You really want to divorce?”
“What? Isn’t that—? Don’t you?”
“No.”
The light bulb in Wei Wuxian’s head flickered and went out with a pop.

08.
Wei Wuxian heard the door handle turn. He squeezed his eyes shut even harder and forced himself to stay perfectly still.
“Wei Ying?”
The approaching footsteps were muffled. Was Lan Wangji wearing those fuzzy bunny slippers Wei Wuxian bought a couple months ago? No way. They were white and pink — and adorable — and Wei Wuxian was sure Lan Wangji would’ve stuffed them away or burned them.
Then again, he’d been sure of a lot of things. Not anymore.
“Wei Ying, are you asleep?”
Wei Wuxian held his breath. He nearly twitched when he felt a weight settle on the bed behind him. A hand landed on his shoulder. Dammit, he knew Lan Wangji would never believe it. It was only 9pm, after all.
The hand gave a little shake. And then a slightly more forceful shake. Finally, Wei Wuxian was forced to end the act and he flipped over to stare balefully up at Lan Wangji’s perfect face.
“I was trying to sleep.”
“No, you weren’t.”
“…”
“Why are you hiding from me?”
“I’m not—!” Wei Wuxian vaulted himself upright into a sitting position. His mouth opened and closed a couple times and nothing came out. Lan Wangji had the gall to look amused, he realized with indignation. “You—!”
Lan Wangji took his hand. “I meant what I said earlier.”
Wei Wuxian stared down at his hand enveloped in both of Lan Wangji’s.
“Wei Ying? What do you think?”
“What do you mean what do I think?” The words came out more snappishly than Wei Wuxian intended.
“About the divorce.”
Wei Wuxian tugged and failed to retrieve his hand. “But the contract…”
“The contract is not important. What do you want, Wei Ying?”
Lan Wangji’s deep baritone was earnest and patient and, suddenly, Wei Wuxian had the impression that he was being talked to like a small child. An irrational wave of anger swept over him. How unfair. It was all Lan Wangji’s fault that he was feeling this way in the first place. His heart was hammering in his chest and his brain was just a muddled, incoherent mess. Tch.
This wasn’t right. He was Wei Wuxian, for heaven’s sake. He was always the one to tease Lan Wangji until he turned his back in embarrassment or anger. So what gave Lan Wangji the right to take the upper hand?
He took satisfaction in the way Lan Wangji’s eyes widened right before he lunged forward.
Those lips were just as soft as Wei Wuxian had imagined. A little dry, perhaps.
Lan Wangji was frozen beneath him, he noticed triumphantly. His own eyes had fallen shut automatically and he swiped the tip of his tongue experimentally against Lan Wangji’s half-open lips. And again. No response?
In the split second he pulled way for air, the world spun around him. He landed on his back against the soft covers and his cry of surprise was swallowed whole by Lan Wangji’s mouth on his.
… … …
“Does that answer your question?” Wei Wuxian panted.
Another kiss, chaste this time, landed on his already swollen lips.
“Wei Ying, I like you. Very, very much.”
“Mhm.”
“You…”
“Me?”
“…”
“Haha, okay, okay. Of course I like you, too! Er-gege is so good, I’d be stupid not to like you!”
“Mn.”
“Mn? So confident, hm? What, did you already know or something?”
“Mn.”
“Hmph! What if I said no? What would you do then? Would you just—mmph! Ngh…hah, L-lan Zhan…”
09.
Wei Wuxian blinked awake to sunlight streaming in through already drawn curtains. The smell of something fragrant permeated the air. Breakfast? That meant Lan Er-gege was awake, right? It must be late in the morning then. He rolled over, fully expecting the other side of the bed to be vacant. Instead, his wildly swinging arm was caught before it hit its potential victim.
“Ah!” Wei Wuxian jumped. “Oh, Lan Zhan, you’re still in bed?”
But upon closer inspection, Lan Wangji was fully dressed and lying on top of the covers rather than under them. His face rested on his palm, propped up on an elbow against the pillow. He seemed to be simply watching him.
Wei Wuxian grinned sleepily.
“Nice view?”
“Mn.”
…Well, damn. When did Lan Wangji learn to be so…so…like that? Wei Wuxian had to look away before he turned into a ripe tomato. Then again, who could blame him? Everything felt like a whole new world.
Everything happened in a whirlwind yesterday and both of them, hot-blood young men, were fully living in the moment. It’s like they were trying to make up for lost time, fully taking advantage of their role as ‘husbands’ for the first time, and wasn’t that the truth? Wei Wuxian could barely believe it.
Last night’s confession and the passion that followed felt like a farfetched dream, yet Lan Wangji’s presence in his room, on his bed, was proof that it wasn’t. It really wasn’t. Wei Wuxian felt bubbly at the very thought. He leaned up for a kiss, delighting in the fact that he could. Lan Wangji did not hesitate to meet him halfway.
When they separated a good minute later, Wei Wuxian couldn’t resist blowing in Lan Wangji’s ear, whispering a low, “Husband.” He laughed when that ear slowly flushed pink.
After half an hour, Wei Wuxian sat in the kitchen and watched Lan Wangji reheat the food.
“Husband.”
Lan Wangji’s back seemed to stiffen for a second. “…Mn?”
“Just wanted to call you. Husband.”
“…Mn.”
“Husband!”
“Mn.”
“Love.”
“…Mn.”
“Oh? You like that one?” Wei Wuxian lifted himself off the chair and crept up behind Lan Wangji — his husband — to wrap his arms around him. “Love?”
He felt Lan Wangji’s chest rise and fall in a deep breath. “Anything you like.” As long as it’s you.
If he weren’t hanging off Lan Wangji like an octopus, Wei Wuxian would be a puddle on the ground. This man…would be the death of him, he swore to the heavens.
“Lan Zhan, ah. Why are you this amazing? You’re so good! I—!”
Of course I like you, too! Er-gege is so good, I’d be stupid not to like you!
Mn.
Mn? So confident, hm? What, did you already know or something?
His own words from last night came floating back to the forefront of his mind. Hm? What did Lan Zhan reply again? He hummed in consideration.
“Hey, Lan Zhan?”
“Mn?”
“Did you…already know? That I liked you?”
“I…did.”
Wei Wuxian’s heart skipped a beat. His arms slowly dropped back down to his sides. “For how long? Wait, how did you know?”
Lan Wangji turned around to face him. “You told me yourself.”
What? When? Why didn’t he remember? Wei Wuxian was dumbstruck. “How is that possible? I would remember something that important, wouldn’t I?! I don’t—!” He froze, mouth hanging open. Wait.
He lifted an arm and shoved Lan Wangji hard.
“You! That night? But—! But that was almost two months ago! And you—! You! All this time? I…” He thumped Lan Wangji on the chest again and then backed away before Lan Wangji could reach for him. “Then why didn’t you say anything? Why did you let me…this entire time?!”
“Wei Ying…”
“I-I’m going to work.” Wei Wuxian as good as ran for the door.
“Wei Ying!”
10.
“Drink up!”
Jiang Cheng tsked in exasperation, trying to fend off his brother’s loud offerings. Half the liquid had already sloshed all over his shirt, what was he supposed to be drinking, huh?! Then again, he was the designated driver that evening so it wasn’t like he could indulge anyway. What a pain. He had to deal with these idiots sober.
Speaking of which…what was up with the idiot-in-chief tonight? Even Nie Huaisang was still upright yet Wei Wuxian could barely form a coherent sentence at this point. Jiang Cheng frowned.
“Okay, that’s enough.” He mercilessly stole the glass from Wei Wuxian’s outstretched fingers. “What’s up with you anyway?”
To his credit, Wei Wuxian didn’t fight him. “Me? Wass wrong with me?”
“Wei-ge, you’re drunk.” Wen Ning could hold his liquor surprisingly well, the only effect being that it slowed his speech down a notch. If anything, it had the added benefit of helping his stutter.
“Druuunk? Meee? Hah, no way.”
“You’re fucking drunk,” Jiang Cheng confirmed. A thought crossed his mind and he pulled out his phone. A minute later, he put it back. For all that he didn’t get along with Lan Wangji, he could admire that man’s efficiency.
It didn’t take long for Lan Wangji to arrive. He looked distinctly out of place, pristinely dressed despite the ungodly hour, standing among the uninhibited, rowdy bar-goers. That light-coloured gaze swept over the scene, brow furrowed, until it landed on the party of four tucked away in a corner. He made his way towards them in long strides.
Indeed, Jiang Cheng had called Lan Wangji to come pick up his ‘husband’ though honestly he was surprised the guy was even awake. He still remembered, back in their school days, Wei Wuxian complaining to him about Lan Wangji’s sleeping hours. Anyhow, he figured it would be safer for Lan Wangji to come — as unlikely as it was, it wouldn’t be good if Wei Wuxian was photographed or filmed on the way back with another guy while drunk. The bar had good security and privacy but there was no guarantee as soon as they left the area. Worst case, Wei Wuxian would get recognized while Jiang Cheng wasn’t. It would be less damage the other way around but still inconvenient. Better safe than sorry.
“You move fast,” Jiang Cheng said in lieu of a greeting. Wasting no time, he unpeeled Wei Wuxian from his lap and dumped him into Lan Wangji’s waiting arms. “He’s all yours. Don’t know why he drank so much today but… Anyway, he doesn’t usually mope for too long so it should be fine.”
“Mn.”
Jiang Cheng watched them go. He’d call Wei Wuxian in the morning to check up on him, he decided. But, in the meantime, Lan Wangji would take care of him. He was certain of that much.
… … …
“Lan Zhaaaaan. Lan Zhan. Lan. Zhan.”
“Wei Ying.” Lan Wangji deposited his wriggling bundle on the bed and began removing his outerwear. His voice came out a little colder than intended. “Why did you drink so much?” He had to admit, the irritation of seeing Wei Wuxian draped all over Jiang Cheng was still lingering. More that that, though, he was concerned. He’d never seen Wei Wuxian drunk in his life. It seemed almost impossible.
Wei Wuxian didn’t seem to hear him. Instead, he mumbled, “Lan Zhan?”
“Mn. I’m here.”
“Really? You’re here?”
Lan Wangji’s gaze softened. He couldn’t resist brushing a hand over Wei Wuxian’s cheek. Ironically, it was something he was only allowed to do in public and honestly, he’d taken advantage of that more times than he’d like to admit. “Mn. I’ll always be here.”
Abruptly, and to his horror, Wei Wuxian teared up. Lan Wangji panicked immediately.
“What’s wrong? Does something hurt? I—”
“But you won’t be.”
Wrong-footed, Lan Wangji could only ask, “What?”
“You won’t always be here.”
“How so? I’m not leaving.”
“Are you my husband?” Once again, Lan Wangji’s train of thought was thrown off, unable to keep up with the wild turns of a drunken mind.
“I…yes.”
Like a petulant child, Wei Wuxian actually puffed his cheeks out and humphed. “You’re not my real husband.”
And suddenly, Lan Wangji felt a little hollow inside. There was nothing he could say to that. It was true. Their marriage was only on paper, as much as he wished otherwise. The room fell into silence.
Eventually, Lan Wangji tugged on Wei Wuxian’s arm. “Go wash up and then rest. Otherwise you’ll feel worse in the morning.” He tugged again when the lump on the bed didn’t move. “Come on. Be good.”
Like a ragdoll, Wei Wuxian was pulled into a sitting position but proceeded to flop over, boneless. He landed against Lan Wangji’s chest. Before Lan Wangji could make any move, arms snuck around his waist and clamped on. The smell of Wei Wuxian’s shampoo mixed with alcohol filled his senses when that head snuggled into the crook of his neck. It took Lan Wangji a couple seconds to realize he started holding his breath.
“W-wei...” He cleared his throat. “Wei Ying. You—”
“I hate this.” Wei Wuxian’s warm breath tickled against his skin.
“…Hate what?”
“You’re not my real husband. I hate that.”
What was that sound? His heartbeat? It was racing faster and faster.
“What do you mean?” He could barely hear himself over that pounding in his ears. Surely even Wei Wuxian could feel it through his chest, the way he was pressed so close against him. So close, yet not for Lan Wangji to take.
“Lan Zhan. It’s all going to end soon.”
“Mn.”
“You must be happy about that.
His sprinting heart tripped. Unbidden, Lan Wangji’s arms rose to clutch at the back of Wei Wuxian’s shirt, returning that embrace. He felt lightheaded, like he was the one who drank instead.
“No!” He rushed to say. It was unacceptable for Wei Wuxian to think that. “I’m…don’t want to…leave you.”
“Lan Zhan. Do you want to hear a secret?” Wei Wuxian’s every word vibrated through his body. “Me, too.”

“Lan Zhan! What are you doing?!” Wei Wuxian looked around frantically to make sure no one was around. “Get up!”
Lan Wangji stayed down stubbornly, one knee balanced against the floor. When Wei Wuxian reached out attempting to pull at him, he merely caught that hand in his own.
“All right, all right, I’m not mad anymore. Just get up before someone sees!”
Wei Wuxian finally shut up when he catches sight of the object Lan Wangji pulls out of his pocket. It was a small black box.
13.
When Wei Wuxian arrived at the Jiang household, it was his good bro Jiang Cheng who opened the door for him. He took off his shoes and then shoved his offerings – some supplements for the old Jiang couple, some gifts for his nephew, and miscellaneous food items – into Jiang Cheng’s arms unapologetically. Ignoring the complaints following him, he made a beeline for the sitting room couch and sunk down, rubbing at his sore waist.
“Tch. What’s the matter with you? Got beat up?”
“Pretty much.”
“What? How?” Jiang Cheng paused on his way to the kitchen and stared at him from the doorway. “Don’t tell me…he laid a hand on you?”
A banana halfway to his mouth, Wei Wuxian looked up incredulously. “Why is that the first thing you think of? You don’t think I could take him in a fight?”
“That’s not the point!” Jiang Cheng strode forward to tug on Wei Wuxian’s collar, as if wanting to check for himself. “You didn’t say no.”
Wei Wuxian batted him away. He took a bite of his banana, looking thoughtful. “Well, in a manner of speaking…”
“What?! Then divorce him! Divorce him after all!”
“Divorce him? Wasn’t that going to happen anyway?”
Jiang Yanli chose this moment to walk into the room with a plate of sliced dragon fruit. She laughed. “Aiya, A-Xian, stop teasing him. You know A-Cheng is slow to catch on to these things.”
Now, it was Wei Wuxian’s turn to be confused. What things?
“Ah, where’s Wangji though? A-Xian, didn’t you say he was coming as well?”
“Oh, yeah, he’s coming directly from the office so he should be here soon.”
The doorbell rang right on time.
… … …
The dinner table was fully occupied that evening with the Jiang couple and all the kids, including Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan. Wei Wuxian was perfectly happy to have his lover on one side and his nephew on the other, enjoying the occasional pieces of meat and vegetables that Lan Wangji delivered into this bowl while teasing the giggling Jin Ling. It was cozy and loud in a familiar way.
When the meal was drawing to a close, Wei Wuxian exchanged a glance with Lan Wangji. He cleared his throat.
“Jiang-shushu, Yu-ayi, Lan Zhan and I have something to tell everyone.”
Jiang Fengmian smiled at him. “Of course. Go ahead, A-Ying.”
Wei Wuxian took a breath.
“We’re not going to get divorced.”
He’d not really been nervous but he couldn’t help the apprehension that rose when Yu Ziyuan scoffed. Even Jiang Fengmian’s brow was furrowing. He thought at least Jiang Fengmian would accept it easily.
“Jiang-shushu…?”
The corner of Jiang Fengmian’s mouth twitched. “A-Ying, ah. I was not expecting…that. Everyone already knows, though. Was that all?”
“…Huh?”
“Although,” Jiang Cheng mused, “we do need to straighten out the details at some point. Does it count as breaking the contract? Who gets the compensation?”
Jiang Yanli shook her head in exasperation, accepting the cloth Jin Zixuan handed her to wipe Jin Ling’s mouth. “A-Cheng, that’s not important.”
After barely saying a word throughout the entire evening, Lan Wangji finally opened his mouth. “Mn. I breached the contract first. I will pay the dues.”
“Lan Zhan!” Wei Wuxian’s first reaction was objection. Then, he considered it. “Well, if it’s paid to me, it’s still yours anyway. Right, gege will support you!”
“Mn.”
Jiang Cheng scoffed in exactly the same way his mother had. Jin Ling burped.

Reporter A: Lan Wangji-xiansheng, your second wedding anniversary is approaching. First of all, congratulations. Do you and Wei-xiansheng have any plans to celebrate?
Lan Wangji: Thank you for your well wishes. Wei Ying and I will have a wedding reception to mark the date. Due to many inconveniences, we were unable to host such an event last year.
Reporter B: You and Wei-xiansheng are known to be a model couple with many fans on social media. However, several months ago, a video was recorded of Wei-xiansheng with an unknown woman, appearing to be flustered when confronted by Lan-zong. It is now circulating once again. Do you have any comments on your husband’s behaviour?
Lan Wangji: None of your business.
Lan Xichen: Ah…Wuxian was just…playing a joke. Nothing to worry about.
Reporter B: Oh.
