Taeyeong watch absentmindedly as one Brachiosaurus left dying in the erupted island of Isla Nublar comes to the scene, Uncle Sangtae is weeping next to him. They are watching Jurassic World 2, the continued movie marathon session after they watched Best Episodes of Dooly last night.
He usually cries with Uncle Sangtae whenever this scene played, but today the movie does not appeal to him that much. Well, the movie is interesting, he would always love dinosaur movies. It just that he is distracted. Mom said it is the word to describe a situation when one has to focus on something but let the mind wander to other things instead.
He wants to ask something to Uncle Sangtae, but he has to wait until the movie ends. Uncle Sangtae said it is basic manner not to talk when they are watching Dooly and other dinosaur movies.
So he tries to focus back to the movie, the question can wait.
“Was the movie not fun?” Sangtae asks to his nephew, noticing that the boy did not cry together with him along the scenes.
Taeyeong shakes his head, “No, it was fun” he answers. He put a quail egg on his mouth while contemplating whether to ask the question in his head or not.
“Uncle can I ask you something?” Taeyeong peeks at his uncle, who nodded at his question. “Why does mom love dad more than he loves her?”
Sangtae stares blankly at his nephew, “Who told you that?”.
Taeyeong shrugged, he was just guessing. Mom always shows her affection towards dad, while dad sometimes looks awkward when mom does that. And his mom said it herself on several occasion if his dad did something that upset her.
“Tha-That’s not true” Sangtae says. “Your dad loves your mom more than she loves him”
Taeyeong blinks in confusion, “How could you know?”. He was sure his observation is right.
Sangtae lets a sigh, the boy still has a long way to go to understand his parent. “I’ve been reading your dad’s face since he was born. H-He looks the happiest when your mom is around”.
Taeyeong tries to recall back his memories, of his parents’ moments together. Dad does look brighter when mom is around, but that goes both ways, his mom smiles a lot when dad is around. Maybe he needs to observe his parents more.
“Taeyeong, did you have someone you like?” Sangtae asks nonchalantly.
Taeyeong choked on his food. “No, no. Of course, no” he answers after several cough and a sip of water.
“Tae-Taeyeong-ah, your cheeks are red and your pupils are quivering. You’re embarrassed” Sangtae says matter-of-factly. His nephew has the same habit with his brother.
Taeyeong choked on his food again. Who is he trying to fool here, Uncle Sangtae is a psychic.
“Please don’t tell mom and dad” he mumbles, embarrassed by the sudden vulnerability. It was only recently that he found this certain girl from his class pretty, when other girls were just another kind from the species for him.
Sangtae didn’t answer to Taeyeong’s plead, he’s not the type to meddle in others business anyway. He will not tell Munyeong or Kangtae of their son’s little secret.
“B-But Taeyeong-ah, when you like someone, it doesn’t matter who likes who more. You just like them” Sangtae says.
Taeyeong blinks at his uncle, a little bit shocked, how did he know? He was upset that the girl did not respond well to him when he talks to her about dinosaur. He was wondering whether if he likes the girl more than she likes him, just like mom and dad.
But again, like Uncle Sangtae said, he just likes her whether if she respond well to his dinosaur talk or not.
Maybe he should ask for Uncle Sangtae’s advice from now on.
And maybe his dad, but later… when he is ready to spill the secret.
