The chatter of the household staff faded into the background as the Medicine Seller caught a few fragments of something stronger and more pointed. It was not enough, on its own, but he could sense something beneath it all that suggested he would be doing more than making a few incidental sales.
"Excuse me, do you have--?" the rest of the question was whispered, by a young maid, and with a careful smile, the Medicine Seller obliged.
He did not ask about the sharp disagreement still floating in the air. It would make itself clear soon.
And he would listen.
