Seokjin’s counter has less than ten minutes left and he laughs about it to Yoongi, resting his head on Yoongi’s shoulder and understandably excited.
Normally, soulmate counters aren’t shared. They’re private things, but Yoongi and Seokjin have known each other since they were born. Yoongi remembers sitting in the corner of the sandbox in preschool, convincing Seokjin to peel the cover band off to show Yoongi. It wasn’t until middle school that Yoongi’s heart started throbbing when he realized their counters weren’t the same, that he wasn’t Seokjin’s soulmate. (But of course he wasn’t. If he were, then both their counters would already be completed.)
Yoongi doesn’t want a soulmate. He wants Seokjin. He wants to somehow change Seokjin’s numbers, make it somehow that they’re soulmates. “When you meet your soulmate,” Yoongi huffs, to hide his pain, “you can’t do this to me anymore.”
Seokjin looks confused. “Do what?”
"You know. Lean up on me. Rest your head on my shoulders. Keep trying to get me to give you a hug. You do that with your soulmate now."
Seokjin frowns. “But if they’re my soulmate, they’ve got to understand you’re the most important thing in my life.”
Yoongi’s heart leaps a little bit at that, but before he can respond, there’s a tall man, smiling warmly down at Seokjin and Seokjin’s cheek flushes. He’s everything Seokjin likes, tall, tan with long legs and big hands and completely the opposite of Yoongi. “Hi,” he tells Seokjin.
"Hi," Seokjin smiles back.
Bye, Yoongi tells himself.
