Chapter 1: Lucid Slumber

Chapter Text

I am like a patchwork quilt. Leftover, unwanted, diminished scraps sewn together haphazardly by my small clumsy, unskilled hands. Sturdy looking, but with a hidden innate fragility.

Before  you stumbled into my life, innocent and eager, I could feel myself coming apart at the seams. Family. Betrayal. Mistrust. All snowballing together, a mass of clouds, weighing me down, a never-ending load shoved upon my weary back.

Tottering on scrawny legs, child-like naivety apparent, like a lamb amidst a sea of ravenous wolves, you came along. You wielded your needle with indistinguishable skill, like an expert seamstress in my eyes, weaving my tattered pieces into a unblemished whole.
I held out my hand to you. But in reality you lent me yours.

~

Hours, then days, then months, we spent together. I felt the makeshift seams loosen. Terrified, futile efforts could never mend the severed bonds. Rather than the swift, serrated, sinister dagger of suffering, your soft, dull velvet glove unraveled the thread.

The thick quilted shield fell away. I’m not a piece of distasteful, beat-up patchwork quilt. Just a living breathing human being. I braced myself for the frigid winds, the unrelenting thunderstorms, but nothing. Just you, a warm, bright summer day, with the clouds high above my head in the sapphire blue skies.

Thank you Bam…
