Heat waves suck, unless you have someone to enjoy it with

Summary:

Japan is in the midst of a heat wave and the ac is broken in the dorms. Kaminari and his friends plans on going to the amusement park were canceled due to the heat. Or were they? Kaminari has a stupid idea and invites someone else to go with him.

Work Text:

Kaminari groaned and slid further down the couch, trying to get in a better position to feel the cold air from the fan.

“Of all times for the air conditioner to break, it has to be during a heat wave,” Sero complained from where he was laying down on the couch.

“Can someone turn the fan toward me?” Mina asked.

Bakugou scoffed, “Fuck off, you had it on you for half an hour.”

Kaminari heard Mina sigh and shift around on the couch opposite from him.

The group of friends were all sprawled out on the couches in the common room, all too hot to stay in their rooms. The air conditioning broke exactly two days before one of the worst heat waves in Japan came, apparently it was so broken that they needed to order a whole new air conditioner, which would take about a week. It had only been three days without an AC and everyone was already dying.

Kaminari groaned again, how was he going to survive until the air conditioner came?

His class had managed to find a bunch of fans no one used anymore, they all divided them up so every three people had at least one fan. But the cool air only did so much.

They could technically spend the day in the school building, which a few of them did, but most of the students didn’t want to spend more time in school than they needed to.

“I’m bummed out we can’t go to the amusement park this year,” Kirishima said.

The group had planned on going to the amusement park an hour away from the school, but they hadn’t had time since they were swamped with school work. When they finally finished all of it, it was too hot to go outside, much less go to an amusement park.

Kaminari nodded his head in agreement, “Maybe next year.”

The park they had planned on going to was the kind that only came around once a year, and only for a week. That day was the last before it closed until the next year.

The group spent most of the day in the same position, too hot and sweaty to move, watching movies and snacking on their dwindling supplies of ice cream and popsicles.

When any of them needed to stand up and go somewhere for something, whether it be going to the bathroom, starting a new movie or getting a new cup of iced water, it always took longer than it normally would and they all loathed it.

As the day dragged on, the group got more and more tired, even less motivated to move than before. One by one, they retired to their rooms even though the sun wasn’t even close to setting.

Kaminari huffed as he fell onto his bed, already over exhausted just from going to his room.

Just as he felt himself dozing off, there was a knock on his door. Kaminari grunted loud enough so whoever was on the other side of the wall could hear him.

He heard the door open and close, light footsteps came closer to where he was sprawled out on his bed.

Kaminari mustered enough energy to lift his head up and see who entered his room. He recognized Jirou’s face just in time before she flopped face first onto his bed.

“To what may I owe the pleasure?” Kaminari asked as he sat up.

Jirou grunted in response, “Don’t want to be alone anymore,” she said, her voice muffled by the blanket.

Kaminari hummed as he laid back down, positioning himself so he was lying next to his friend. He looked out the window and saw the sun setting, hopefully it would get cooler as well.

That’s when Kaminari had an idea. A stupid idea, but a fun one.

He tapped Jirou’s back, flicking away her ear jacks when she tried to stop him.

After a few seconds, Jirou angrily flipped over and glared at Kaminari, “What?” she asked.

“I had an idea,” Kaminari started.

The two friends stepped in the line forming near the entrance of the park.

“I know you wanted to go to the amusement park, but this is stupid. It’s almost curfew, plus it’s still super hot.” Jirou sighed.

Kaminari grinned as they moved a few spaces closer to the booth. “It’ll get cooler when the sun sets, and it’s the weekend, so curfew shouldn’t matter.” Kaminari had said as much when he first proposed the idea to Jirou.

She had decided to come with him, whether it be out of pure boredom or something else, he didn’t know.

“Weren’t you and the others planning on coming here?” Jirou asked.

Kaminari nodded. He saw Jirou open her mouth to say something but then close it again. Kaminari furrowed his brows, confused.

“We’re next,” she said after clearing her throat.

Kaminari startled and walked up to the booth, insisting on paying for his friend’s ticket as well despite her protests.

They entered the gates to the amusement park and froze upon seeing everything that was there.

“What do you want to do first?” Kaminari asked, not knowing what to choose himself.

“No idea.”

The two decided on just walking around first, so they could see everything that was there.

They rounded a corner and Jirou gasped, pulling Kaminari along to a destination he couldn’t see. She stopped near a large building, a fun house.

Kaminari raised an eyebrow at her, he never pegged her the type to like those kinds of things.

Jirou rolled her eyes, “I used to go through this exact fun house with my parents when I was younger, I haven’t done it in forever.”

Kaminari smiled at the twinkle in her eyes and led the way to the line.

The second they paid, Jirou grabbed his hand and pulled him along once again. The two jumped over stones surrounded by water, walked through those circle tunnel things that spun, went through a maze made out of punching bags, - Kaminari shoving a few at Jirou a few times - then went through a second maze right afterwards with a bunch of mirrors.

The two stumbled out, laughing with huge smiles on their faces , both having totally forgotten about the heat.

“What next?” Kaminari asked.

They spent the rest of the night going on fun rides, small roller coasters, competing against each other, eating food and having fun. They spent a lot of time on the bumper cars, not even paying attention to the other people there and only trying to hit the other. Kaminari even somehow managed to convince Jirou to go into a haunted house with him, which ended with the two of them stepping out and Jirou clinging to his arm so hard he thought he would lose circulation - not that he minded. There was also a laser tag arena, apparently it was a new addition that year, and Kaminari and Jirou faced off against each other when they were the only ones left, Kaminari making Jirou buy some dumb toy for him since he won.

The two students were walking near the edge of the park, having done all the activities they wanted to do. Thankfully, Kaminari had been right and the day grew colder as the sun set.

Kaminari pointed something out and Jirou laughed, he looked down at her and grinned. He was happy he had invited Jirou and no one else, even though he had originally planned to go as a group with his friends. Kaminari enjoyed making Jirou laugh and spending time with her. Not like a date or anything, the thought had occurred to him a few times that night and he pushed it away whenever it showed up.

But the way Jirou laughed with that look in her eyes and the way she bounced up and down and grabbed his hand when she was excited made it hard for Kaminari to think of their outing as anything but a date. He felt his cheeks heat up as he continued to think about it.

“Are you okay,” a voice cut into his thoughts.

Kaminari realized he had been staring at Jirou this whole time, a faint blush on her cheeks. He cleared his throat and looked away, nodding his head.

They were stopped next to a grassy hill when an announcement suddenly came from the speaker near them.

Attention everyone! The firework show will be starting soon!

“Firework show?” Kaminari asked, he hadn’t known there was going to be one.

“Apparently,” Jirou said as she looked around in a circle. “Look.” She pointed behind Kaminari.

He turned around and saw a bunch of people were gathering around on the hill, finding places to sit. The show must be somewhere near where they were.

Kaminari gestured for Jirou to go first, after confirming she wanted to stay and watch, and they found a spot a bit further away from everyone else.

They were sitting down next to each other as they watched the fireworks, hearing children playing on the hill below them, rolling down it and chasing each other around.

“Why did you invite me to come with you? I mean, why didn’t you invite the others like you had all planned?” Jirou asked suddenly.

Kaminari looked at her, about to give her an answer when he realized he didn’t have one.

Kaminari thought for a moment, “I always have so much fun with you and I like making you laugh. I would rather spend a night at the amusement park with you than with Bakugou, Kirishima, Mina and Sero.”

Jirou was silent for a moment, “I think the same thing, it’s always fun to be with you.”

The two were silent for a while as they watched the finale of the fireworks.

“I haven’t been to a real firework show in so long. They’re beautiful,” she added after a second.

Kaminari looked at her and saw the way she was smiling and looking at the show in front of them, “Yeah, they are,” he said without turning his head away from her.

Jirou opened her door and turned around to face Kaminari, “Thanks, I had a lot of fun.”

“Me too,” Kaminari said.

They stood in front of her door, neither of them knowing what to say.

“I’m gonna head to bed now,” Jirou cleared her throat and shifted on her feet.

Kaminari nodded, wishing her a good night and started to walk away. He suddenly spun around and wedged his foot between the door and doorframe.

Jirou looked up at him, her eyebrows raised.

“We should do this again. Next year, same time, same place,” he said, somehow managing not to stumble over his words.

Jirou was silent for a second and Kaminari’s face burned.

“I would like that,” she finally said, even though Kaminari was sure it wasn’t that long until she answered, it just felt like it.

Kaminari beamed at her and bid her good night, making his way back to his room. He was happy he was going to go to the amusement park next year with his friend. He only hoped that by that time she would be more than a friend.
