white camellias

Summary:

Prince Jimin receives a marriage proposal from his childhood crush’s empire only to feel saddened about the fact that his love letters were made by someone else’s and not his true feelings.

Luckily, Hoseok came through.

Notes:

this is from the anime Violet Evergarden in Netflix! It’s my favourite episode since I was and still am a sucker for romance.

- Violet Evergarden, Episode Five:
Princess Charlotte is to have a public correspondence with her betrothed, and Violet is entrusted with writing the letters on her highness’s behalf.

Work Text:

‘Prince Park Jimin,

Do you remember me from the garden with the white camellias on that moonlit night?’

“That’s a handwritten letter!” The crowd murmured with one another. “It’s rather brief, what is he thinking?” Another voice whispered.

“This is a first in history. What’s happening?”

Jimin nervously waited for his doll to come as Jungkook read out the Kim Empire’s Prince’s letter towards him. Hoseok walked in the room and bowed automatically to the nervous blond.

“I had a discussion with his doll regarding our future exchanges.” Hoseok said monotonously. Jimin exchanged glances with his attendant before gulping out of nervousness, “It’s your turn to write a letter.”

“Using your own words.” The doll said, making Jimin purse his lips in thought. He slid a paper on his desk and dipped his feathered pen inside the ink holder before writing out of instinct.

‘Prince Kim Taehyung,

I do remember, you laughed at my tear-stained face. I was really offended by that! But I never forgot the sound of your voice when you told me it was okay to cry, I never forgot about your kindness.’

The letter was sent and soon enough the response from the Kim Empire came back. Prince Jimin was sitting down on a fountain near the camellia garden where he first met the man of his dreams. Hoseok came to find him with the letter and another rose that represented the Kim Empire’s.

‘Prince Park Jimin,

I laughed because you were cute when you acted your age, I didn’t mean to offend you. I’m sorry.

Although my title is ‘Prince,’ my personality isn’t exactly that. Don’t expect me to be a mature man. We only met that one night, what kind of person are you?’

“How dreamy, sounds like a genuine love letter.” The crowd sighed at the sweet exchange of their Prince’s soon-to-be lover. It was a tradition for their Kingdoms and Empires to publicly read out two soon-to-be lovers’ letters of romantic exchanges to avoid rumours and cause another political drama between nations.

‘Prince Kim Taehyung,

I am a hot-tempered baby, I’m probably not the man of your dreams.’

“No way!” A man yelled in a bar, the group of soldiers from the Pellia Kingdom were gathered around to read the letter that the press had gotten from the Palace’s higher ranked soldiers, “Come on, Prince Taehyung! Comfort our Prince!”

‘Prince Park Jimin,

I have a little sister, so I'm used to crybabies. But I’m not all that great either. I’m not the man of your dreams, either.’

“That’s so lame!” The frontal guards complained.

“Come on be a man! You’re supposed to say, ‘come with me!’” The guards gossiped around, totally entertained by the two Prince’s handwritten exchanges.

‘Prince Kim Taehyung,

That’s not true since I’m already head over heels for you!’

Jimin gritted his teeth and punched the air around his room out of embarrassment and irritation from his supposed intended love’s dense-self. To calm himself down, he placed the fourth rose that the Prince of the Kim Empire had sent on a vase right in front of his main window.

‘Prince Park Jimin,

Because of the first letter? That was the work of a skilled doll.’

Hoseok came to find the Prince again who was watching the koi fishes swimming around the river. The Prince looked slightly indifferent with all the hectic marriages and the letter exchanges being handwritten but inside, he feels like he’s about to go jump off the bridge and drown himself into the sparkling river along with the koi fishes.

‘Prince Kim Taehyung,

I’m not in love with the one in the letter. I’m into the person I met four years ago who patted my head under the moonlight.’

Meanwhile in the Kim Empire, Taehyung let out a small grin at his future lover’s letter. He’s really cute.

‘Prince Park Jimin,

I just comforted you that one time because you were crying.’

Jimin was stuck, he didn't know what else to say about this response until Hoseok helped him remember the time and scene again of their first meeting.

‘Prince Kim Taehyung,

I’ve treasured that one moment for all these years like a precious gem!’

The Prince of Pellia Kingdom rushed through the halls with his heels clicking through the floor and his attire flowing behind him. The fellow maids and attendants watched the blond’s pouty lips form themselves instinctively out of the increasing frustration of having to have his idiot crush notice him.

‘Prince Park Jimin,

I’m insensitive and I don’t understand the ways of going through someone’s heart. I might leave you and go hunting.

I’ll probably disappoint you. I’m sure you’ll meet a better man as you get older.’

The blond prince aggressively dipped his feathered pen on the ink container. Seriously, his crush doesn’t get it at all.

‘Prince Kim Taehyung,

Excuse me, but what do you mean by a ‘better man’? In terms of their looks? Their wealth? My idea of a good person is someone who’s able to act genuinely. Among everyone I’ve met, the only one who admits to not being a good man is you!

That’s all I care about, that’s all I want!

I’ll go with you when you go hunting. Don’t underestimate the Prince of Pellia Kingdom! I’m educated so that I’m able to marry into any family! I bet I’m a better hunter than you!’

Jungkook and Hoseok glanced at each other after seeing their little Prince starting to write bold letters more and more as time passed by.

Jimin yelled out a panicked noise, “I shouldn’t have written that! He must think I’m an ugly brat!” He pulled his hair out of frustration and anxiously walked around his room waiting for the Kim Empire’s Prince’s letter.

Hoseok stood at the side, watching his Prince go crazy as every second passed by, “I should’ve had you write everything, Hoseok-hyung! Why didn’t Jungkook stop me?”

“Prince Jimin-“ Hoseok said before getting interrupted by Jungkook coming into the room with the letter and another rose from the Kim Empire.

“Here’s his reply.”

‘Prince Park Jimin,

I’ll be waiting for you in the garden under the moon tonight.’
