Smooth Jazz Soft Heart

Summary:

Phoenix only used Miles's secrets against him when the end result was mutually beneficial.

Work Text:

Miles Edgeworth had a secret.

Perhaps that was too vague. Of course Miles Edgeworth had a secret. Like most people, he had many secrets, a few of which Phoenix knew.

The one Phoenix was thinking of in particular had to do with Miles’s secret love for old rock and smooth jazz. He kept a vinyl collection and occasionally played records while he worked in the home office.

Phoenix finished the last of the dishes and dried off his hands, glancing into the den area. He saw Miles comfortable on the sofa with a book. He looked so soft and tranquil after a day of difficult decisions and demanding work. Perhaps life was catching up with Phoenix, but he felt a little silly, a little lovestruck. Phoenix wanted to hold that softness in his arms.

Phoenix glided silently past the den into the office. He slipped the door close to flip through Miles’s record collection. He found the record he was searching for: The Very Best of Louis Armstrong. He put it on the player and set the needle on the middle of the record. If he could convince Miles to dance with him by the time “C’est Si Bon” was over, he’d have him for “Cheek to Cheek.” Phoenix turned up the volume and walked back into the living room as the lazy trumpet and trombone wafted into the room.

Miles was staring up from his book as Phoenix entered the room. Phoenix proffered a hand and a smile as an invitation. Miles looked from that smile to that extended hand. He set his book down with a relenting sigh and a relaxed smile of his own. He accepted the extended hand as the lyrics came in strong. Phoenix pulled him close and they swayed back and forth across the carpet. Phoenix rested his forehead against Miles’s. Miles leaned in to peck him on the lips and then closed his eyes.

By the time “Cheek to Cheek” had begun, Phoenix kissed him again and set about to a little livelier rocking. Miles laughingly yelled “Phoenix!” when Phoenix had swung Miles out for a twirl. They led a jaunty strut around the living room until the ascending arpeggios of “La Vie en Rose” led in Armstrong’s trumpet solo. Miles pulled Phoenix in even closer than what felt possible. They swayed with their cheeks touching. Phoenix was going to readjust them so they could dance forehead to forehead, but then Miles began singing with the lyrics into Phoenix’s ear with a dulcet whisper. Phoenix felt his heart skip a beat and love settle in his chest. As Miles finished singing, he pressed a kiss to Phoenix’s cheek. They continued swaying until the final trumpet note of the tune resounded.

As “Blueberry Hill” began, Phoenix pulled Miles in for a soft slow kiss that had Miles wrapping his arms around Phoenix’s neck. Miles pulled him from their swaying down to the couch across his lap. They kissed and kissed until Miles asked for access with his tongue, deepening the kiss, fanning the flames. Phoenix ground his hips into Miles’s and opened his mouth.

Phoenix hadn’t expected things to get this heated, but he wasn’t complaining. He was going to reach under Miles’s shirt, but then he heard Apollo's yells in between Trucy’s laughing replies outside. Phoenix pulled back from Miles's amorous grasp. Giving one last kiss, he slid off Miles's lap onto the couch next to him. Miles took Phoenix’s hand and intertwined their fingers. Phoenix sighed blissfully as he laid his head on Miles’s shoulder. “Blueberry Hill” faded from the other room as a jingle of keys unlocked the door.

“Hello! We’re back!” Trucy yells from the door.

“Welcome back,” Phoenix called.

“You two look relaxed,” Trucy noted as she passed by with a box of props.

“We were able to have a rare night in,” Miles replied. Apollo chuckled as he passed the den with a similarly large prop box. A night in was a rare thing in their profession.

“Did you guys do anything fun?” Trucy asked as she passed by the den again, presumably to go get more props. Miles and Phoenix exchanged a look and a quick kiss.

“I suppose so.”
