When Dream attracts unwanted attention from the earth-shaking god Poseidon, Athena gifts him the power to petrify any creature with just a glance. Just the sight of his red eyes turns living things to stone. She promises him that he will never be hurt again, but Dream is more worried about hurting his friends.
In order to protect his loved ones, Athena gives him a mask. It was the only way to hide his eyes from the world when he needed to. He would never show his face again, not even to his closest companions. No one had seen his face for many years.
