Things Left Unsaid

Summary:

Yamada waits for Jirou so he can help her with her vocals, but she hasn't shown up yet! Great. Now he has to go find his student. Not like he has anything else to do.

Notes:

ngl, I had this fic done a few weeks ago, I was just waiting to post it. This was inspired by one of my friend's headcanons on Present Mic. So I gift this to them <3
I just hope I characterized everyone correctly.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Yamada taps his foot impatiently as he checks his watch.

3:30 P.M.

He takes another sweep of the area in front of the Rec Media building. She’s going to be late. “Guess I’ll just have to go find her.” Last time Yamada tried just yelling for Jiro, she threatened to get Aizawa on him.

The hero spots Yaoyorozu and Kaminari. “Ooo!” He runs over to them. “Yaoyorozu! Kaminari!”

Kaminari gives the other a smile. “Hey man! What’s up?”

“Have either of you seen Jiro?”

“Yes, actually.” Yaoyorozu points down one of the walkways of the campus. “She’s with Midoriya and Shinso near the main building.”

“Thanks kids! I’ll see you in class tomorrow,” Yamada waves to them as he makes his way down the main road. He’s almost to the main building when he overhears a conversation off the path, hidden by trees and shrubbery.

“Yeah, I get what you mean Midoriya.” Yamada hears Jiro’s voice. “The three of them are a lot like parents.”

Shinso’s voice is the next one to chime in, “I accidentally slipped the other day and called Aizawa ‘dad’ and we both choked up for a moment before awkwardly going on with what we were talking about.”

Midoriya laughs. “Yeah I don’t know when we started it, but one of us slipped and since then, we’ve just been doing it more and more. It,” the teen hesitates, but Yamada can hear the smile in the kid’s voice, “It feels like Toshinori is my dad figure. I never met my own father, and my mother never really dated anyone else. So I never really knew what I was missing, I guess?” Yamada feels tears trying to spill from his eyes when the kid awkwardly laughs. “But, it’s stupid. Every kid probably dreams of being All Might’s kid, so I-”

“Midoriya, that isn’t stupid at all. Mr. Yagi dotes over you just like a dad.” Jiro laughs, cheering her classmate up.

“Yeah, Yagi seems really attached to you Izuku. With Aizawa and I talk, he’s always checking up on me and how I’m doing and everything.”

“When I asked Mr. Yamada to help me with my vocal warms up since I couldn’t practice with my old man as much, he was so overzealous. I had to threaten Aizawa to get him to stop yelling.” Her voice softens before she continues, “I may not have shown it, but his excitement made me really happy. He reminded me of my old man when I first wanted to learn how to play music like him and momma.”

Yamada’s breath hitches when he hears her next sentence.

“So, yeah. They’re so much like parents and I’m grateful for it. We all have a second home with each other here.”

Midoriya chuckles. “Yeah, I guess you’re right Jiro.”

“Jiro, aren’t you meeting up with Yamada later this evening?”

“Yeah, at four-”

Yamada doesn’t stay for the rest of the conversation. He makes a hasty retreat to go find Toshi and Shota. By the time he makes it to the teacher’s lounge, he’s practically sobbing, but what startles Toshinori and Shota is that he’s completely soundless. They spend the next thirty minutes trying to get him to tell them what happened, but when he helplessly just traps them in a hug, they offer him comfort.

They never do find out what rattled their resident loud mouth to silent sobs.

It's something that Hizashi decides to leave be lest he go into another sobbing fit.
