Kiss it and make it better

Summary:

It's a long night when the one you love is out of reach.

Work Text:

Miles scrolled through the document glowing on his laptop. He took note of a few details he would have to research further and wrote them down on a piece of paper. For the last three hours, he had been making a list of things to do when he had access to office files.

Even though it was two in morning, Miles was having trouble going to sleep. Normally, either he or Phoenix would put Trucy down to bed by eight and be drifting off to sleep themselves by eleven. But today wasn’t normal. It hadn’t been normal in the slightest.

Miles sighed and took off his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose. He wasn’t tired, but his eyes were. Of course Miles knew that Phoenix was important to him: the two of them had stuck together through difficult, painful times, supporting each other, growing inextricably closer. No one besides Trucy had made his world so vibrant. However, Miles hadn’t realized how deeply Phoenix was ingrained in his life. He hadn't realized it was to the point that it was difficult to fall asleep in their bed without the man. Miles had even tried curling around Phoenix’s pillow, smashing his face into the smell of Phoenix, but to no avail.

The slam of a door and a wail startled Miles out of his contemplations. He rushed to the hallway to see their 10-year-old bawling her eyes out while sitting on the floor outside of his and Phoenix’s shared bedroom.

“Trucy,” he hurried over to her. “What’s the matter?”

“Where’s Daddy?” she cried. Trucy crawled into his arms and latched onto his shirt.

“He’s not here right now, sweetie,” Miles held her as he felt his heart break at her cries. “He’s in the hospital, remember?”

“Papa, I want D-d-daddy,” the sobs bubbled in her chest. Miles picked up the small girl and sat down with her on the couch. She buried her face in his shirt and continued to cry, saying over and over again that she wanted her Daddy. Miles held her and rubbed her back as she cried. After the sobs slowly turned into hiccups and sniffles, Miles pressed a kiss to her hair.

“Do you want to go see Daddy before school tomorrow?”

Trucy looked up into his face with big watery eyes. “Uh-huh,” she gave a nod. Miles used a thumb to gently wipe away her tears.

“Okay,” Miles said. “Then that’s what we’ll do.” Trucy latched onto him and nestled herself further into his shirt.

“Can I sleep with you, Papa?”

“Of course you can,” he picked her up. “Let’s try to get some rest.”

“Remember Trucy,” Miles held her hand as they walked past the reception desk. “If Daddy’s sleeping, we can’t disturb him.” She nodded. Trucy put on a big smile. Miles smiled back, but his heart still hurt. She was trying so hard to be brave after last night. They peeked through the window of Phoenix’s room and saw that he was reading a book while sitting up in bed.

“Daddy!” Trucy exclaimed as she threw the door open. Phoenix’s face lit up like a neon sign.

“Trucy, my favorite girl!” She rushed the bed and Miles hurried to pick her up and place her on the bed before Phoenix tried to pick her up himself. Phoenix gave her a big hug and a smooch on the cheek. “How did you know I needed morning hugs and smooches?” Phoenix asked as he peppered her face with kisses. Trucy laughed uproariously.

“Daddy always needs his morning hugs,” she threw her arms around his neck. “I brought you a present!”

“Where is it?” Phoenix looked around.

“I’m going to grow you some flowers,” Trucy said with a broad smile, “with my magic garden gloves and a little bit of love! Three… two… one… POOF!” Trucy produced a bouquet of sunflowers seemingly out of nowhere and handed them to her father.

“These are wonderful! Thank you, Trucy,” Phoenix said with a smile.

“I’ll go ask the nurse for something to put them in!” Trucy snatched up the flowers and hopped off the bed.

“Trucy wai-” Miles couldn’t stop her before she was out of the room with the flowers in her fist. He let out a sigh.

Phoenix chuckled. “Was she bursting with energy like that all last night?” Miles shook his head.

“She missed you a lot last night,” Miles held out a hand. Phoenix took it. They intertwined their fingers.

“Just Trucy?”

“No,” Miles drew the hand up to kiss it, “I missed you a lot last night too.” Miles pressed another kiss to the back of his hand.

“You know,” Phoenix’s eyes glittered, “I have a pair of lips that have also missed you.” He used his free hand to point to his face and puckered. Miles eyed him and peppered more kisses onto the back of his hand.

“Come here,” Phoenix protested. “I want to kiss you.” Miles smirked and nipped the back of Phoenix’s hand, making Phoenix flinch. He whined.

Miles lathed his tongue on the sore and kissed it again. “If you have the energy to complain, that must mean you are feeling better.”

“Don’t start something you have no intention of finishing,” Phoenix grumbled. Miles stopped kissing the back of his hand. He leaned over Phoenix, mere breaths away from his face.

“Maybe I will finish it.”

Their lips met for a slow, sweet tender rain shower of a kiss. Phoenix let go of Miles’s hand so that could angle his face. Their lips drew apart briefly before Miles leaned in for a kiss that was deeper, longer.

They parted, panting, Miles still inches close to Phoenix’s face. Phoenix still cradled the other man’s face in his hands.

“When will they be discharging you?” Miles fought the urge to kiss him again.

“If I pass the doctor’s checkup, it will be this afternoon.” Phoenix drew Miles’s face back in, clearly not experiencing the same inhibitions. He nibbled on Miles’s lips and gave him short pecks.

“Call me and I’ll come pick you up,” Miles said in between kisses.

“But then you will be leaving work early,” Phoenix frowned. “Isn’t the prosecutor’s office in the middle of salary review?”

“I got enough done last night that I can leave a few hours early,” Miles kissed him back. Phoenix gave him a knowing look. “I told you,” Miles murmured, “Trucy wasn’t the only one who missed you last night.”

Phoenix let go of Miles’s face to wrap him in a hug. Miles held him close, taking in the warmth he had missed.

“Okay. I’ll call.”

“Daddy! I found a glass!” Trucy came running in holding a pitcher with the sunflowers now in it. The two pulled apart so that Trucy could present the pitcher to her father.

“Thank you, sweetheart,” Phoenix kissed her forehead and set the pitcher on the table next to the bed. “These are lovely.” Trucy gave Phoenix a beaming grin.

“Trucy, it’s time to go to school,” Miles checked his watch. “Say goodbye to Daddy for now.”

Trucy held out her arms. Phoenix grinned and leaned down to receive a big hug from his daughter.

“I’ll see you later Daddy!” Trucy and Miles waved as they walked out of his room. Phoenix’s grin was still wide even as they left.

“See you later.”
