Protecting the Innocent

Summary:

"He's the kid the headmaster locked up!" he exclaimed. Atsushi paled as realized what he was implying. These two were from the orphanage too?

Basically: During a mission, Atsushi runs into two people from his past and they are determined to not let him live it down.

Work Text:

After Fyodor’s arrest, Yokohama was at peace. The Port Mafia and Armed Detective Agency were continuing with their truce. In fact, they have even began to help each other train (which is what the random fights between Atsushi and Akutagawa were now called.)

Sometimes, they would borrow agents from the other organization to help. Which was what was happening right now. Part of Yokohama’s underground was participating in a child trafficking ring. Kyoka and Akutagawa raided what Ranpo said was their hideout. They found all the children, trapped in cages, but the traffickers themselves made a run for it, so they called for backup while they took care of the children, which arrived in the form of Atsushi.

“Where’s the nearest entrances to the underground?” Atsushi asked.

“There’s four,” Akutagawa answered, “two north of the hideout, one near the Port, and one near the subway tunnels. You take the two to the north. I can get to the port and the one at subway a bit quicker than you could.”

“Sure,” Atsushi rolled his eyes before activating his ability and taking off to the north. The weretiger checked every alleyway he spotted as he continued his travels. It took him 20 minutes before he found the first entrance. Atsushi went into the underground and used his senses to track down anyone that came down here.

As he went deeper into the underground tunnel, he heard two voices approaching him.

“Can’t believe they found the hideout,” one of them stated.

“Relax,” the other rolled his eyes, “the boss got away so we can just start over-”

“Ren, someone’s here.” The second guy, Ren, followed his friend's gaze and saw Atsushi, bracing himself for a fight. Ren’s eyes widened in surprise, a smirk slowly spreading on his face.

“Taka, my guy, you don’t recognize him?” Ren chuckled, “He’s that kid the headmaster locked up!” Atsushi paled at what Ren was implying. These guys are from the orphanage?

“Oh yeah!” Taka exclaimed, “it only makes sense that you would end up in the underground. The headmaster was right about you after all.”

“I’m not part of the underground, unlike the two of you,” Atsushi glared at them, “You both are part of the trafficking ring, so I’m going to have to take you in.”

“You’re a cop?” Ren snorted. “Yeah right, they don’t let your kind into the police force.”

“Never said I was a cop,” Atsushi was not having any of their crap today. He already had enough turmoil from the headmaster himself; he didn’t need to hear it from his fellow orphans. “Now come willingly or I’ll have to use force.”

“Brute force?” Taka laughed, “I can see why the headmaster locked you up. Always so brutal towards everyone. So what are you up to nowadays? Are you a murderer?”

“Well no-” Atsushi began but was cut off by Ren.

“Taka, isn’t it obvious? Only those idiots in the Port Mafia would take in someone like him.”

“I’m not in the Port Mafia.” Atsushi’s words fell on deaf ears as Taka ignored him.

“You’re with the Port Mafia and you’re trying to arrest us? You should turn yourself in first.”

“Jail is too good for someone like him, he’d just break out with that brute force if his. Maybe he should do the world a favor and take a swan dive off-” Ren was cut off when he was all of a sudden in the air, upside down.

“Oi, Weretiger,” Atsushi looked behind Ren and Taka to see Chuuya approaching them. “You sure take your sweet time taking out the trash. Akutagawa got so worried he asked me to look for you.”

“He is with the Port Mafia!” Ren shrieked.

“Did they find the ring leader?” Atsushi asked, trying to ignore Taka and Ren.

“Yeah, that stupid Dazai found him,” he spat the name with venom. “So what’s the deal with these two? Sounds like they know you.”

“Put us down!” Taka demanded.

“They’re part of the trafficking ring,” Atsushi answered. Chuuya gave him that look, as to say but that’s not all there is to it, right? "We also went to the same orphanage.“

“Really?” Everyone in the Port Mafia and the Armed Detective Agency knew about the orphanage Atsushi had come from (mainly due to a drunken Dazai breaking into the Port Mafia to tell Chuuya and Kouyou about it.) None of them were able to find the exact location of the place (because Atsushi would often panic just thinking about the place), but they all swore they were going to destroy it; at this point, it was a matter of who got there first.

“You really are scum,” Ren yelled at Atsushi, “You’re so useless as to go join the Port Mafia because nobody else would accept you!” Chuuya glared at Ren, but the latter paid no mind.

“I already said I wasn’t in the Port Mafia!” Atsushi retorted.

“Well, you seem quite close with them if they’re helping a good-for-nothing piece of garbage like you.” Atsushi paled as Ren continued to call him every insult under the sun. “The world would be way more peaceful if you were dead!”

“Better yet, you shouldn’t have been born,” Taka sneered at him. Atsushi froze up. Chuuya (who was trying his damn hardest not to kill these two) noticed the look on the weretiger’s face. It was a look he was all too familiar with; despair. Screw it.

“And you both shouldn’t have opened your mouths,” Chuuya growled. He threw them into the nearby wall over and over again. Taka and Ren groaned in pain as they were dropped on the ground. “Not so smug now, are we?!” he boasted.

“Are you gonna kill us?” Taka croaked. The two of them were raised into the air yet again, this time above some jagged rocks.

“Leave it to Atsushi to get someone else to fight his battles,” Ren muttered. Chuuya was seeing red at this point.

“Ah, there you two are!” a third voice rang out. Chuuya scowled at the familiarity of it. “Chibi, you can’t do that kind of stuff in front of the children; it’ll scar them.”

“Are you serious?!” Dazai ignored Chuuya and walked over to Atsushi, who was deep into a downward mental spiral.

“Atsushi? Are you okay?” Dazai shook him slightly. Atsushi broke out of his stupor and looked up at Dazai.

“Ye-yeah, I’m fine,” he smiled at his fellow detective.

“How about you head back to the agency? Kyoka and Akutagawa are waiting for you,” Dazai suggested, “I’ll finish things up here with Chibi.”

Atsushi nodded and took off in the direction he had entered from. The second Atsushi was out of sight, the smile fell from Dazai’s face. He turned towards Chuuya, Ren, and Taka.

“Put them down for a second. We need to chat.”

“W-we ain’t telling nothing!” Ren yelled.

“What could you possibly want from these two jerks? I say just kill them and move on.” Chuuya glared at the two boys, who shrunk back in fear. Good. Be afraid.

“Chibi, I thought you were smarter than that. These two have valuable information.” Chuuya saw the look in his ex-partner’s eyes and suddenly, he pitied these two for a little bit. But then again, they made Atsushi’s life a living hell.

—–

Atsushi was sitting with Naomi, Haruno, and Ranpo in the cafe.

“Am I the only one that found it a bit weird that there was a last-minute mission in the dead of night?” Atsushi asked.

“I’m more surprised that you didn’t go with them,” Naomi answered.

“Honestly, Kunikida and Dazai didn’t let me. It’s the only time I’ve ever seen them agree on something.” Ranpo chuckled softly to himself but said nothing.

“Woah, they can agree on things?!” Haruno gasped, “They’re always fighting though.”

“Yeah, but that’s just because Dazai is lazy and Kunikida is a workaholic,” Ranpo piped up, “plus, it's not really fighting, its just Kunikida yelling at Dazai.” The waitress came with their drinks.

“Maybe they wanted you to relax a bit after today’s mission,” Haruno suggested.

“Yeah but if that were the case, Kyoka wouldn’t have gone with them,” Atsushi sipped his coffee, “wonder what they’re dealing with.”

“You’ll know by tomorrow morning,” Ranpo smiled, knowing exactly what was going on.

Meanwhile….

The members of the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia stood outside a prestigious looking building.

“Did you make sure that there’s no children remaining in here?” Fukuzawa asked Dazai.

“Found them all lovely homes,” he smiled.

“Good,” he turned to the members of his agency. Yosano revved up her chainsaw and was grinning madly. Kunikida was looking at the building in disgust, his ideals book was in his hands. Junichirou was activating Light Snow to make sure none of them got caught. Kyoka had her sword in hand and Demon Snow was floating behind her. Kenji (like the angel he is) had his stop sign and was engaging Kaji in a conversation about lemons. Asides from him, Kouyou, Gin, Akutagawa, Hirotsu, Q, Chuuya, and even Mori had come as well.

“So this is the place that the weretiger grew up in?” Akutagawa asked while activating Rashomon.

“How did you even find it?” Kouyou questioned, “I was under the impression that Atsushi did not like mentioning this place.”

“Well, if there’s one thing that stupid mackerel can do, it’s interrogate someone,” Chuuya smirked. Dazai smiled back.

“Level the place,” Mori ordered the Mafia. “Make sure none of the staff make it out of there.” Fukuzawa shot a glare at Mori, but then again, he knew his agents were probably going to do the same thing.

“Let’s blow this place to bits!” Kaji yelled as everyone advanced on the building.
