Chapter Text
The first sign happens on a regular Monday morning.
Shouto’s dreaming about work, numbers coming to life from his reports and chasing after him around the office. It isn’t at all a good dream, more like a nightmare, and he wakes up with a small wince. He refuses to open his eyes, afraid that he’ll see more numbers. A weird scent hits his nose all of a sudden and he feels himself relax. He scoots over closer to it, letting his nose lead him. It isn’t all that weird, it’s just weirdly sweet, and very enticing; Shouto finds himself purring (something that he doesn’t do out loud unless his mate is involved). His nose brushes against something warm and he buries his face there. Sweet. Delicious. Inviting. Delightful. Shouto opens his mouth and licks against the warm skin, wishing to taste this sweet scent.
Izuku is rudely awoken from his dreams. A gross shiver runs down his spine as he feels his mate lick up his neck. He does it again and Izuku growls out, pushing him as far away from him as possible.
“SHOUTO!”
Shouto opens his eyes as he wakes up fully and stares at his omega, “huh? What? Why are you yelling so early in the morning?”
“WHY ARE YOU LICKING ME?!” Izuku asks wiping off the slobber on their blankets.
He blinks, “was I?”
“YES!”
“Oh… I don’t know. You smelled really good this morning, I couldn’t help myself. Come here.”
“No! Stay away from me! I’m taking a shower AND THAT IS NOT AN INVITATION!” Izuku huffs climbing out of the bed.
Shouto watches him walk out of their bedroom and slams the door behind him. He reaches out for Izuku’s pillow and buries it in his nose. He can’t really explain what happened, he doesn’t normally wake up licking his omega’s neck (normally it’s other places that he licks). He takes a deep inhale of his pillow and purrs out again. There’s something different, his omega doesn’t normally smell this nice. Shouto feels like he’s being engulfed in a cloud right now smelling the pillow.
Izuku walks back into the bedroom half an hour later with a towel around his waist. He stares at his alpha fast asleep with his pillow smushed against his face and sighs out.
“What’s wrong with you Shouto?”
The second sign happens a week later on a Sunday night.
“Izuku! Dinner! Stop working!” Shouto calls out as he sets up the table.
Izuku hums as his fingers tap across the keyboard. He types as quickly as he, double checks his wording, and saves his work. He leans back in his chair as he takes off his glasses, rubbing his eyes right after.
“I’m coming!” He responds, closing his laptop.
He places his glasses on top of the laptop before walking away from his desk. He enters the living room just as his alpha places their dinner on the table. Izuku pulls out a chair and takes a seat, staring down at all the food in front of them.
“Thanks babe, sorry about before. My deadline is coming up soon and I have to finish this before Tuesday.”
“I understand Izuku, just don’t forget to eat and take care of yourself okay? When was the last time you showered?” Shouto teases, sniffing out very loudly.
Izuku puffs out his cheeks and glares at him, “babe… shut up.”
Shouto snorts and picks up his chopsticks. He starts eating with a smile on his face. Izuku hopes he chokes just a little bit on his food as he stares at his dinner. His stomach does a small flip. Izuku blinks and leans in closer, taking a small sniff; he immediately jerks back and covers his nose.
“Ugh, Shouto, are you sure these eggs aren’t expired? They smell terrible.” He whimpers.
“That’s impossible, we went food shopping Friday. They smelled fine when I was cooking them.”
“Well they don’t smell fine now.”
“Maybe I cooked yours too long or something, here try some of mine.” Shouto says, offering him a bite.
He holds it so close to his face Izuku can’t hold it back in. He feels something rising up from his stomach and jumps to his feet. The bathroom is too far, he isn’t going to make it, so he runs to the kitchen sink instead and throws up everything inside. Ugh, he’s going to have to bleach this sink now when he’s done. Just great. Shouto follows after him and rubs his back up and down.
“Izuku…” he whimpers lightly.
Izuku reaches up and turns the faucet on, letting it wash everything down the drain. He puts his lips underneath the running water and washes his mouth out when he’s done.
“I’m sorry,” he whispers leaning back up.
Shouto shakes his head and offers him a kitchen towel, “don’t be, it’s my fault for not noticing you were sick. Maybe it’s because you’ve been overworking yourself too much these past few days. Want to go to the doctor?”
Izuku pats his mouth off with the towel, “no, no I feel fine. My stomach just didn’t agree with eating that tonight. I’m fine.”
“Izuku,” Shouto growls stubbornly.
“It’s nothing to worry about. I’ll take some medicine and go to bed early tonight.”
He narrows his eyes, “no more working tonight.”
“But Shouto- my deadline-”
“Will have to wait. I want you in bed right now, I’ll make you some soup or porridge instead.”
“Ugh, I still have to eat?”
“Of course you do and if you throw that up again I’m taking you to the hospital.”
Izuku pouts out his bottom lip as he looks up at him, “can I please just do a small, tiny, itty, bitty piece of work while I rest in bed? Please?” He flutters his eyelashes.
Shouto stares at him with a blank expression on his face.
“I’ll finish my bowl of whatever you make me completely.”
“Ten minutes.”
“Shouto! Thirty!”
“Five.”
“Shouto that’s backwards! At least give me twenty-five!”
“Fifteen minutes, after you eat everything and keep it all down.”
Izuku pouts stubbornly and huffs, stomping his feet as he heads to their room, “you’re sleeping on the couch tonight!”
“That’s fine, I’ll have your computer to keep me entertained. See if you can take your temperature before you get into bed; we should have a thermometer in the bathroom.”
Izuku slams the door close as his response. Shouto shakes his head at his childish omega before he opens up the cabinets and looks for a soup can.
By the third sign Izuku more or less realizes that something is definitely wrong with him.
He’s sleeping in more often, even longer than Shouto which is impossible since his alpha doesn’t like waking up until the sun is high in the sky. He’s become more picky about certain things he eats, but when he finds something he likes he can’t get enough of it. Shouto keeps waking up trying to taste him in the mornings and he’s really getting tired of that wet wake up call.
He didn’t have a temperature though whenever he checked. He didn’t have any symptoms of a cold or the flu. If this was a stomach bug or something like that Shouto would have caught it as well since they live together, but he was fine. Uraraka told him not to worry while Iida said to take it easy and maybe see a doctor. Izuku didn’t want to see a doctor; that was just going to be a waste of money since he felt fine!
But he wasn’t fine, so Izuku did what a lot of other people do when they have problems and don’t want to pay to get them fixed. He looked up answers on the internet. After writing down his symptoms and googling them online several things popped up. The most frequent one was pregnancy.
Pregnancy.
Izuku laughs to himself.
He suddenly stops laughing as he stares down at his phone.
Pregnancy?
“No,” he whispers, clicking on the sites.
After twenty minutes of researching Izuku is running towards the nearest store down his block. He’s sweating as he drops several pregnancy tests on the check-out stand, tossing whatever bills at the cashier before running back to his home with them. He can’t get into the bathroom fast enough and locks the door behind him, ripping open one of the boxes.
He pees on eight different sticks from four different pregnancy tests. All of them had the same instructions, pee on the stick, wait three minutes, plus is pregnant, happy face is pregnant, the words pregnant popping up meant pregnant. Izuku’s leg is bouncing up and down as he stares at his phone, watching the timer tick by.
“Izuku? You in there?” Shouto calls, knocking on the door lightly.
Izuku’s phone flies out of his hand and he struggles to catch it, “y-yeah Shouto! I’m in here!”
“Did you leave the house earlier?”
“Yeah, I went to the store real quick!”
“Okay, just wondering. I’m going into work late today, did you want to eat out for lunch?”
“Sure… sure.” Izuku mumbles as his timer goes off.
“I’ll start getting ready then.”
Izuku hears his footsteps walking away from the door. He puts his phone down on the counter and picks up a pregnancy test. His hands are shaking as he turns it around, staring at the results.
Happy face.
Plus sign.
Plus sign.
Pregnant.
Happy face.
Pregnant.
Oh...wow. The first emotion that Izuku feels is happiness. So much happiness. He has always wanted a family, even before he knew he was an omega, and to have a child with the love of his life? Izuku giggles as he jumps up and does a little dance. Pregnant, he’s pregnant. He’s pregnant with his alpha’s child, he was a true omega. A real one, not a worthless one. Sad memories fill up in his head, but Izuku shakes them out. No, he won’t think of those, this is a happy time.
Sure it wasn’t planned, but the timing wasn’t all that bad. They had nice jobs, a nice home, stable income, they would totally be able to raise this child in a safe and happy environment. Izuku grabs one of the tests and leaves the bathroom. A bit of nervousness bubbled up in his stomach as he looked for his alpha. Telling him would be… easy? Hard? He doesn’t know. He has no idea how Shouto will react, he knows what he’s hoping for though.
He finds his alpha near the front door looking for his coat on the coat rack. Izuku gulps before clearing his voice out loudly. Shouto glances up at him real quick before going back to his task.
“Have you seen my black coat? I was sure I hung it up here. It’s a little chilly outside, so you should dress warm.”
“Shouto… I have something to tell you.”
Shouto stops what he’s doing and turns towards him, “yes?”
There’s no easy way to say this, so just rip it off like a bandage.
“I’m pregnant.”
… His facial expression doesn’t change one bit. He stands there staring, blinking, breathing in and out slowly.
“Pregnant…” he says in a low voice.
Izuku nods his head several times, “yes, I just took a test- that’s what I went to the store for this morning and-”
“Please excuse me.”
Shouto turns around, grabs whatever the hell color coat from the rack, and walks right out of the door. Izuku watches him leave before sighing out to himself. He should have been surprised, but honestly… he wasn’t. In the beginning of their courting the two of them talked about what they wanted out of their relationship before starting one. Shouto’s main thing was honesty, complete and utter honesty, and to know if he wasn’t happy to tell him immediately so they could correct it (even if it meant leaving each other, Shouto was very specific and detailed that he didn’t want to force Izuku into this relationship and trap him). Izuku wanted what everyone wanted, love, happiness, marriage… and children. Shouto was pretty neutral on that topic. It wasn’t until after they started dating for a few years that he knew more about him and his childhood. Shouto didn’t want children because he was scared of being a bad father, Izuku knew he would be a good one though. He thought they would have time to talk about it more, when they two of them were ready they would come back to this topic. Neither of them expected for it to just be sprung onto them like this.
So Izuku isn’t surprised. He isn’t hurt. He simply sighs to himself and places his hand on his stomach. It’s alright, he knows Shouto loves him. He’s just freaking out, he’ll come back eventually and then-
The front door slams open and his alpha comes running back into their home.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I’m sorry Izuku, I’m so sorry!” He cries out throwing himself at his feet.
Shouto kneels down and rubs his head against his legs, holding onto him tightly. Izuku’s eyes widen with surprise as he stares at him. Shouto can’t believe he just did that- he can’t believe he just… left like that. He was barely out of the front gate to their apartment before he realized what the hell he was doing and ran straight back.
“Shouto, Shouto it’s okay.”
“I’m so sorry Izuku, I didn’t mean to leave you. I didn’t mean to abandon you, please forgive.”
“Shouto… Shouto… Shouto! That hurts you know!”
Shouto immediately pulls away and sits down on his butt, a large frown on his face as he stares at the ground. Izuku kneels down and wraps his arms around him, running his fingers through his hair.
“It’s okay Shouto, I forgive you. I know this is a surprise, I know you’re scared of children. I’m scared too, you know. When I found out I was pregnant though I felt so incredibly happy… do you know why?”
Shouto shakes his head lightly.
“Because this was your child. I was happy because I was having a baby with my alpha who loves me, and cherishes me, and takes such great care of me all the time. I was so happy that I was going to have another piece of you Shouto, I even did the little happy dance I sometimes do.”
His alpha chuckles lightly and pulls away. Shouto’s eyes are so wide and beautiful as they stare into his own. He leans over and presses their lips together for a short kiss.
“I’m scared shitless right now.”
Izuku laughs.
“I’m not going to be like my father though; I’m not going to abandon you or our child Izuku. That will be the first and only time I ever leave you again. I’m sorry again Izuku, I’m here for you now. 100%.”
“Thank you Shouto. You have nothing to fear, our child is going to love and adore you just like I do.” Izuku smiles cuffing his face.
Shouto leans into his hand, “... this explains why I’ve found your scent so tempting lately. The baby is making you smell sweeter.”
“Ugh, does that mean you’re going to keep licking me awake every morning?”
Shouto laughs out loudly and hugs him close, “sorry love.”
“Yeah, you’re just lucky that I love you.”
“Very lucky. I’ve never forgotten how lucky.”
Izuku hums out lightly and hugs him. A baby. A wonderful cute little pup of the two of them. He can’t stop the smile from appearing on his lips as he imagines the cutest little version of Shouto.
