Work Text:
The apartment is quiet.
Denki shuts the door oh so quietly behind him- he doesn’t want to disturb this sense of tranquility. It’s silent, even, and as his coat gets hung on the rack and his suitcase placed on the floor, he relishes in it.
It’s been nothing but LOUD the last few months. Hero work is never easy- Lord, he’s still surprised that his younger self would have EVER believed that. The transfer mission in England took way longer than necessary- and with the secrecy of it, no contact should’ve been had.
He….might’ve broken a few of those rules, but only for the most necessary of reasons. Those reasons being the person he’s travelled all the way home for.
His shoes follow his suitcase, and a tired hand pulls his frazzled and frayed ponytail from it’s greasy, plane-wrecked hold.
Light footsteps carry him towards the rest of the apartment, to baby-blue walls with white frames and pictures of them over the years. To the few toys scattered around, and a few new scratches on the edge of the couch.
The little demon comes walking out of the room as if the mere thought summoned her, grey tail held high in pride as she struts, her own footsteps silent.
As high and mighty as she acts, he knows that part of her missed him as she wounds herself around his legs, still silent.
He’ll have to thank her for her silence later.
The apartment smells like lavender and sunshine, of lilac sunsets near fields of soothing flowers, and it’s the smell of home.
Home, a place he hasn’t been in months, and not just the building. The person in it, as well.
Fingertips barely trail over the walls, catching on the doorframe as a hesitant hand lightly pushes it ajar.
Sleeping beauty slumbers, as still as he always is while traveling dreamland. It’s a loud contrast to how he normally is, always moving and saving people with that stubborn, determined hero spirit.
Only fitting for the #1, after all.
Izuku stirs, as if the mere thoughts of him send feathers tickling his nose. He stirs, and as the early morning sunbeams peek through the window and encase the room in it’s glow, Denki has never felt more in love than he is now.
He steps into the bedroom- narrowly avoiding the one creaky floorboard as his feet perform the familiar dance of managing to get to the closet without waking up his partner, or the other couple that live next door.
They could own a high and mighty penthouse in the city, sure. They’re heroes, after all, they have a bigger paycheck than most of the jobs in the world combined.
Izuku never wanted that. They’d discussed it, as fledgling heroes kicked straight from the nest of UA and left to flounder and try to spread their wings and fly.
He’d had his eyes set on being #1 from the very start- just not wanting to flaunt it. A penthouse would be nice, sure, but how easy would it be for people to find them? How many people would get hurt or killed in an attack on it, if it were to fall in on itself and surrender to the forces that shook it?
That was his logic for getting a smaller apartment in a quiet town. And Denki couldn’t be happier with that choice- but sometimes, he still believes it’s because Izuku grew up in a place like this- and that he wanted to start a new life with him in the place he felt the most safe.
It makes his heart go all soft and fluttery when he thinks about it, like that.
Denki manages to make it to the closet, fuku trotting alongside him before throwing herself on the bed with a mewl.
He turns, T-shirt held tight in his hands as he gives the cat a death glare. She simply returns it, lifting a paw to her face as she starts to lick.
That cat is a menace, but she’s their baby, so he won’t scold. He can’t, anyway, unless he wants to wake his lover up.
Not yet, his mind chimes. Not yet , his heart whispers.
He’s changing as fast as he can while being quiet- the Deku hoodie messes his hair up further as he pulls it over his head, tossing it aside. It smells like the apartment he’d stayed in in england, cold and dreary, like wet laundry or the smell of London in the rain.
The tshirt he pulls over his head smells like the laundry detergent he insisted they use after Inko came over to cat and housesit one time, during their first days as registered heroes.
The sweatpants are covered in cat hair and carpet fuzz, but it’s familiar fuzz, so he’ll pick it off later.
Finally, as his heart aches and his tired body begs to relax, he’s able to make his way to the bed.
It dips under his weight, and as he pulls the covers back, Izuku stirs. The cat meows.
Sleepy green eyes blink up at him slowly; barely open.
They snap open after a few more studying seconds.
“Hi.”
Kaminari whispers it, and Izuku throws the covers back in a flash; and before he knows it, he’s got arms around his neck, his lover in his lap, and warmth squeezing the life out of him.
“I- What are you doing here? I thought your mission didn't end for a few more days? I missed you so much, why didn’t you tell me you were coming home? I could’ve made a special dinner or something, i would’ve cleaned up around here so you wouldn’t come home to cat hair everywhere, I-”
Kaminari brushes back sleep-mussed curls with a feather-light touch, and with the same gentleness, presses a kiss to his temple.
“Calm down there, before your tongue decides to run off." He teases, and smiles sheepishly. "And I finished my mission earlier then they thought I would, and I like surprising you. I wouldn’t want something all big and bold and extravagant- you just like this is enough. Seeing the cat toys everywhere, and that new scratch on the couch, made it all more real that I was home.”
Izuku’s cheeks flush at the kiss, as if they’re schoolboys in UA again.
“Fuku did it the day you left. I’ve been so busy with hero work that i haven’t been able to focus on the house as much, and you know.. Trying to distract myself from the fact that you were gone.”
“Well, I’m here now, aren’t i?” Denki chides, softly, and runs his hands through Izuku’s curls again. “And I’m not planning on leaving again anytime soon, unless you’re with me.”
Izuku smiles, and his smile holds the same sunshine that he’s missed so much in the dreary months in England.
They end up under the covers in a few moments- with Denki hugging Izuku tight, curls barely brushing his nose and it’s everything he’s missed, and longed for in the many months he’s been gone.
He doesn’t want to have to leave again anytime soon- and by the way Izuku is hugging him, he doesn’t think he could even if he tried.
